[Bug 537448] Re: No sound in sony vaio VPCEB16FG (Realtek ALC269, snd-hda-intel driver)

2011-11-07 Thread Matthew
First work around worked. I also had a problem with changes not being
there after a reboot so I used the analyser's ability to generate a
script (after using the interface to set 0x19 widget control vref to
HIZ) and then made the script run on start up (I saved the script in
/etc/init.d/soundSet):

sudo update-rc.d -f soundSet start 99 2 3 4 5 .

Sound works every time now. Thanks.

2011-11-07 Thread rbaleksandar
I'm using the PPA for ubuntu-audio-dev with the linux-alsa-driver-
modules-2.6.32 and haven't had a single problem (sound-related that is)
ever since. :) No need to edit any values inside the HDA_Analyzer or
stuff like that.

I think I love you (if you're a man, know that it is a pure non-homo love :D).
Work around #1 worked like a charm. The moment I switched to HIZ the beautiful
sound of Mr. Mozart started pouring out of my speakers, for I was testing my
audio with a track from this great genius. So thank you very much and wish you
best of luck and keep helping poor buggers like me. :D
Btw I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid Lynx on a Sony Vaio VPCEB3M1E (uncle Google
can show you the specs ;)).

i am also having the same laptop, and i updated my alsa driver to 1.0.23
and sound worked but there were some conflicts with flash player and
other music players...i couldn't play sound in both of them
simultaneously. anything about that??

Works perfectly in maverick beta as by comment #119
and also is this problem resolved in maverick completely?? because that is the
most important thing now??

I can confirm that in maverick, using multiple applications such as flash

2010-05-19 Thread Savvas Radevic
Confirming bug on sony vaio VPCEC1M1E / lucid 10.04. Installing linux-
alsa-driver-modules-2.6.32-22-generic from the ubuntu audio dev ppa and
rebooting fixes the issue!

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa/ubuntu
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.32-22-generic

and restart :)

2010-05-09 Thread gokul
** Description changed:

There is no sound by default and I have added the ubuntu-audio-dev ppa
to my package sources and have the latest packages and still there is no
  sound.

My guess is the card is recognized.
I have tried adding options snd-hda-intel model=basic to
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa_base.conf to no avail.

I have tried using the debugging guide(s):
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

Here is the alsa db link, created by alsa_info.sh

  work around #1:
  Please refer to comment #46.
  You can get hda-analyzer here:
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/HDA_Analyzer

Do the 'quick run' mentioned in that page. Find Node[0x19] on the left
hand side pane and click it. Look under widget control on the Right
hand side pane. Change VREF's value from whatever it is to HIZ.

This has worked for me and others who have commented here.

[Bug 537448] Re: No sound in sony vaio VPCEB16FG (Realtek ALC269, snd-hda-intel driver)

2010-05-06 Thread Rocky Stone
@ff670099
See Daniel T Chen's comment#97

Here is the link to the ppa with instructions how to add it:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive/ppa
Once you add the ppa install linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r) package,
e.g. linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.32-22-generic and reboot. Sound should be
working after that.

This workaround works fine and we'll have to use it since the update of
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/alsa-base to version 1.0.23 (which has
the fix) may take a while.

Hope that helps,
Rocky

Daniel's hint is really useful, sadly when a new kernel arrives this ppa

2010-04-19 Thread Rocky Stone
Problem is that it's not a simple solution as it involves to download
about 500MB in packages in order to build ALSA!.

500 MB?!? Don't go this way, you only need to download and build alsa-
driver.

Link:
http://alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Download#Latest_Software_Source_Releases
Direct link to the tarball that has the fix:
ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.23.tar.bz2
Than ./configure make make install

I was using this utility:

Does not ALSA need this xmlto stuff to compile?

[Bug 537448] Re: No sound in sony vaio VPCEB16FG (Realtek ALC269, snd-hda-intel driver)

2010-04-19 Thread Vladimir Hidalgo
I confirm that for a VAIO VPCEB15EL upgrading to ALSA 1.0.23 solves the
sound problem!!! (don't forget to remove related to HDA any line in
alsa-base.conf).

Problem is that it's not a simple solution as it involves to download
about 500MB in packages in order to build ALSA!.

The bug is fixed is in alsa-driver-1.0.23 release, so we just have to wait for
it to get updated http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/alsa-base
Daily sapshot alsa-driver-20100415.tar.gz from Takashi Iwai worked for me.

2010-04-17 Thread Vladimir Hidalgo
I found a blog with instructions on how to compile it and upgrade, although
they're instructions for Karmic.
http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2010/04/17/upgrade-alsa-1-0-23-on-ubuntu-karmic-koala-9-10/

The sad point is that alsa-project.org is down by expired dns and http
://alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.23.tar.bz2 can't be
pulled ATM.

A permanent solution is:

sudo -s wget
http://ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tiwai/misc/hda-verb/hda-verb-0.3.tar.gz
tar xf hda-verb-0.3.tar.gz
cd hda-verb-0.3
make
cp hda-verb /usr/bin

sudo vi /etc/rc.local
and add the following line before exit 0 :
/usr/bin/hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x19 SET_PIN_WIDGET_CONTROL 0x22

save and reboot the system

ps: instead vi you can use gedit, kate or other editor.
pps: sorry for my eglish.

Do the 'quick run' mentioned in that page. Find Node[0x19] on the left

update for completeness:
I tried booting with the latest mainline kernel available:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-rc3-lucid/

The screen turns blank once X starts. No virtual console either. Unable
to test sound.

2010-04-06 Thread ff670099
Thank you a lot!!
I still have a question: if I go into audio preferences (the typical ubuntu
one), I can see two different audio cards. Analog Stereo and HD audio generic
digital stereo. The sound works with the first one, but not with the other. Do
you have the same problem? There is a solution?

Thank you in advance.

After upgrading to linux-image-2.6.32-19-the sound is missing again :(

When I boot the previous 2.6.32-18 kernel I still have sound, so the
issue is somewhere in the kernel changes.

In https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=4934 the original
reported posted a patch for alsa-driver that works for me.
I have Vaio VPC EB1J1E and I'm using Kubuntu 10.04 (lucid) beta1. Applied the
patch on alsa-driver-1.0.22.1.90.g32fde.390.gffdb8 and sound and microphone now
work fine.

[Bug 537448] Re: No sound in sony vaio VPCEB16FG (Realtek ALC269, snd-hda-intel driver)

2010-03-28 Thread Brad Figg
Hi gokul,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.
Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you

In VPCEB16FG,

* Changing node 0x19 did not help. [it is already in HIZ for IN] [reply
to comment #46]

[reply to comment #48]
* Enabling EAPD in either 0x14 or 0x15 or both gets sound in the builtin speaker
* When both 0x14 and 0x15 are enabled, disabling EAPD in either one disables
the builtin speaker.
* This of course, does not disable the headphone jack, both function
simultaneously
Thanks for the workaround.

[Bug 537448] Re: No sound in sony vaio VPCEB16FG (Realtek ALC269, snd-hda-intel driver)

2010-03-26 Thread gokul
I think there is some problem with hda-analyzer 's revert feature or I
don't know if some settings are automatically applied. Node 0x19 had
changed from HIZ to 80 after a reboot and there was no sound in either
the builtin speaker or the the headphone jack.

I had to change IN on Node 0x19 to HIZ or GRD, and now the builtin
speakers and headphone jack are both functional and the speakers are
automatically OFF when the headphone jack is plugged-in. (along with
changes to Node 0x14 and 0x15 mentioned in comment #50)

Intuitively and by the observed behavior, Node 0x14 is the builtin left
speaker out and 0x15 is the right speaker out.

After a second reboot, I have observed that Node 0x19's IN does revert

[Bug 537448] Re: No sound in sony vaio VPCEB16FG (Realtek ALC269, snd-hda-intel driver)

2010-03-23 Thread Cuppa-Chino
I have this bug and managed to fix it temporarily on vpceb1c5e:

using HDA analyser I set NODE 0x19 Widget Control VREF from 50 to HIZ
or GRD (either seems to work) -- this enables PLAYBACK only, jack sense
between loudspeaker and headphone jack does work, I will try and dig up
what enables recording:

although model=generic works for the headphone jack, the balance and
volume functionality don't work -- they don't change. Using gnome volume
control to adjust the balance automatically makes the volume zero. Using
alsamixer does not change the volume levels to anything other than 99 or
100.

Not that this helps really, but you can get internal microphone input by
specifying model=auto in alsa-base.conf.

Input or output, but not both. :(

FWIW, the internal speakers on my particular VPCEB are REALLY poor!
Maybe not hearing them isn't so bad! ;)

2010-03-17 Thread gokul
Yes, as far as the speakers go, sound reproduction is bad and my left
one is already bust I think - it fizzles at 80% (windows 7 terminology)
volume.

Another observation, playing around with an external speaker sometimes
freezes my USB devices. I am not able to reliably describe the scenario
-- may be there is some power leak/feedback from the speaker?

[Bug 537448] Re: No sound in sony vaio VPCEB16FG (Realtek ALC269, snd-hda-intel driver)

2010-03-17 Thread gokul
Not sure if this also related to [#532095]. Will add this comment there
too.

running multiple sound apps at one time introduces noise
(fizzling/buzz).

Another note:
Chromium and totem played the same .flv file (go to youtube, play a video in
chromium (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1Vbs84MziYfeature=related) and play
the temporary file corresponding to that ( /tmp/Flash*) in totem):
* totem plays it as mono
* chromium plays in stereo
* Starting totem (along side chromium) introduces noise, stopping totem
restores clarity to chromium's playback (I am not talking about sounds
overlapping, this is white noise) -- the streams appear to be interleaved and
correspondingly tempo is halved -- and girl sounds like a guy etc.
* Stopping playback in chromium does not restore full clarity, totem still has
residual noise but tempo appears to be restored
* closing chromium and restarting totem restores clarity to totem playback.

* if totem plays first and chromium starts after, all symptoms are
inverted except that stopping playback in totem fully restores
chromium's playback clarity.

pavucontrol says chromium uses ALSA playback whereas totem is reported
as using Playback stream.

I have upgraded to lucid alpha 3.
will update the bug report now with apport-collect.
For the record: No sound yet.

2010-03-15 Thread rvaliant
I have been able to get sound from the headphone jack by specifying
model=generic in /etc/modprobe.conf/alsa-base.conf

Others have as well. See ALSA bug referenced above.

I think a new ALSA model patch is going to have to be created for Sony
VPCEBs.
