[Bug 552046] Re: Lucid beta 1 won' t boot, plymouth launch broken

2010-04-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
Unfortunately the latest plymouth still does not work for me. Here's
what I see with --verbose:

4.1 - local-bottom and init-bottom begin and end
4.2 - forcedeth on ifname, highdma
A bunch of init lines from mountall, hostname, plymouth, hwclock, ureadahead,
with the last two:
init: plymouth state changed from post-start to running
init: Handling started event
6.8 - adding swap
7.3 EXT3 FS on sdb1
7.4 EXT4 FS on sde1
7.5 EXT4 FS on sdb3
8.2 EXT4 FS on sdc4
8.3 EXT3 FS on sdc1
8.7 EXT3 FS on sdc2
8.8 SCSI bus initialization
33.9 EXT4 FS on sda1
82.5 EXT3 FS on sdb2

After that, no more lines. Note the giant amount of time after the SCSI
bus initialization and sda1, sdb2 being initialized. I don't recall
where these are physically, but all of my drives are SATA, so I don't
think anything special is happening.

[Bug 552046] Re: Lucid beta 1 won' t boot, plymouth launch broken

2010-04-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
AGH, some bright spark has now made pretty much everything a dependency
of plymouth. It's no longer possible to remove it without destroying the
system (removing xserver-xorg, e2fsprogs, util-linux, hostname,
upstart). Please fix the dependencies!

[Bug 552046] Re: Lucid beta 1 won' t boot, plymouth launch broken

2010-04-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
To try to workaround this, I renamed /etc/init/plymouth*.conf since
those are the files that are actually run. Now the system gets into a
loop on startup and then appears to timeout:

mountall: Skipping mounting /proc/bus/usb since Plymouth is not
available

It does not seem that this is a valid dependency.

Ignore that last comment - it was tangential to this main issue (a line
in fstab that I commented out).

I also encountered #545536.

Will restore the plymouth scripts now and try to reboot to see if this
bug is valid.

2010-03-31 Thread Steve Langasek
Reuben,

Please expand on unavailable. Does Alt+F1 cause the screen to go
blank? What do you see on the screen before pressing Alt+F1?

Does adding the 'nomodeset' boot option change anything? Do you see any
output at all on the screen when booting without 'quiet' and 'splash'
options?

[Bug 552046] Re: Lucid beta 1 won' t boot, plymouth launch broken

2010-03-31 Thread Reuben Firmin
Unavailable meaning that the keys don't work - it stays on the same
terminal.

Nomodeset made no difference - I'd tried that while initially debugging.

Without quiet and splash, I see init-bottom run, and then the udev disk
output as described in 552088. After that there's no more output. The
terminal responds to shift page up / page down, and the alt sysrq keys.
I've left it at that state for 90 minutes to see if it was temporarily
blocked on something, but without any difference.

If I run with init=/bin/bash, I see the same output, and then get a bash
prompt as expected.

Are you looking for anything in particular? I can't capture what's
logged (AFAIK) but I can hunt through the log messages if you like.

[Bug 552046] Re: Lucid beta 1 won' t boot, plymouth launch broken

2010-03-31 Thread Miguel Branco
I dont know if this helps but the output to the screen is not totally
frozen as i can see usb messages by plugging/unplugging usb devices.
Actually I can always see an error message from a previous usb keyboard
initialization which was timed out, so it appears 11 s later. after the
init-bottom done message. So apparently we are still on the console
screen.

BTW after the done message the hard drive still works hard for a good
time ( 10s) and then stops any activity.

[Bug 552046] Re: Lucid beta 1 won' t boot, plymouth launch broken

2010-03-31 Thread Miguel Branco
As i had noticed I didn't have a tty0 in event.d (as i have been
upgrading since 6.04), tried to install Plymouth back.

In the process version 0.8.1-3 was available to upgrade. I did it and
now it works. Tx. Will close the bug if Reuben confirms also.

BTW, should I left created a tty0 anyway ? I've deleted it and it still
works.

[Bug 552046] Re: Lucid beta 1 won' t boot, plymouth launch broken

2010-03-31 Thread Miguel Branco
Thanks.

Could I also ask if it is normal that when I first booted with the new
Plymouth version the splash screen appeared for a relatively good time (
i could see the dots move) but when I rebooted many times since it
only appears very late just before gdm login screen ? I ve read a few
posts telling the same and would like to know if this behavior is just
normal beta tweaking. The funny thing though as I said is that on the
first run it was quite ok. Rgds

The amount of time that the splash screen stays on the screen depends on
a number of things, including whether any of your filesystems had to be
fscked. bug #540801 has more information about this problem in general.

[Bug 552046] Re: Lucid beta 1 won' t boot, plymouth launch broken

2010-03-31 Thread Steve Langasek
There's not nearly enough information here to debug this. plymouth does
not break the boot for the vast majority of beta users. What version of
plymouth did you have installed? What options are you using when
booting? If you use Alt+Fn keys at the time the boot stops, does this
work and is there any relevant information on the other VTs?

2010-03-31 Thread Reuben Firmin
See the bug marked duplicate and the ubuntu forums thread for some me
toos.

For me, it was the most up to date plymouth version (as of this morning)
in the main lucid repository. Using any of the kernels as set up by
default caused the issue. E.g.

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-18-generic
root=UUID=0c348e4b-57dc-406b-8331-179437cd311b ro quiet splash
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-18-generic
root=UUID=0c348e4b-57dc-406b-8331-179437cd311b ro  single
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-20-generic
root=UUID=0c348e4b-57dc-406b-8331-179437cd311b ro quiet splash
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-20-generic
root=UUID=0c348e4b-57dc-406b-8331-179437cd311b ro  single
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-16-generic
root=UUID=0c348e4b-57dc-406b-8331-179437cd311b ro quiet splash

root=UUID=0c348e4b-57dc-406b-8331-179437cd311b ro  single

I'll reinstall plymouth and get the version plus other info for you.

[Bug 552046] Re: Lucid beta 1 won' t boot, plymouth launch broken

2010-03-31 Thread Miguel Branco
Well Steve, first thanks for the attention. You all seem to confirm we
were right to maintain as a bug since this is not happening to a
majority of users and could remain unnoticed.

Sorry if we lack more info but we were already quite lucky to bypass
the issue and be able to pinpoint on plymouth. AFAIC I ve made on
Monday/Tuesday (2 days ago) a totally clean upgrade from 9.10 using
update-manager -d, downloaded 1,7 G and restarted. After i could init
with bin/bash and network with dhclient eth0, i could do another apt-get
dist-upgrade which download another 178 M (despite my really fresh
upgrade), which included an update to plymouth as i could notice. So i
guess i have really the lastest plymouth version.

Alt-Fn wont work. Vanilla kernel options (tried xvesaforce, nodmraid,
nomodeset, noapic etc... at first to no avail so i was back to standard
options, especially no vga option whatsoever ).

My laptop features an ATI Mobile 700 card.
