This bug was never solved even with the necessary information provided,
I changed(sold and bought an imac instead) the computer, so I cannot
test this anymore at that ubuntu version, neither at a current one;
seems pretty dead to me.

Hi, as the imac update has not yet came, I´m with my HP touchsmart
still. Now with Ubuntu Natty the workaroud by Cris does not work
anymore. If anyone find a new solution post it here, so I can test
before changing PC or just for the others(if by the time of reply I have
already sold my Hp Touchsmart).

but I´m not sure if it is the computer cooler fan or the cd drive. I got

goes gray, then white before really shutting down...or not.

I tried, just in case, to install the video driver ubuntu way now, above
the manual nvidia driver install and custom xorg.conf. It worked! I find
strange which now it worked and before not, but anyway, the custom xorg

perfect graphics. Strange indeed

[Bug 660331] Re: hp touchsmart 600-1010br no video

2010-11-29 Thread ChrisSteinbach
Here's how I got the graphics working on my HP TouchSmart 600 for Lucid
and Maverick. I'm working partly from memory, so let me know if
something doesn't work.

1) Install the latest Ubuntu (32 or 64 bit according to taste) using the
alternative install;
2) Once Ubuntu is installed you will get a black screen after you reboot;
3) Recovery mode will also give you a black screen;
4) This sucks and the nouveau display driver is to blame, we need to blacklist
it;
5) Let Ubuntu boot normally. Stare a while at the blank screen until you think
the boot process is complete;
6) Use the key combination CTRL+ALT+F3 to switch to text mode;
7) You still won't see a thing. Sorry. You'll have to work blind for a while;
8) Enter the username you chose at installation followed by the password;
9) Enter the command $ sudo su followed by your password;
10) Enter the command $ echo 'blacklist nouveau'
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf;
11) Enter the command $ aptitude remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau;
12) Enter the command $ aptitude remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau-dbg;
13) Enter the command $ reboot and boot into recovery mode;

If you're machine doesn't reboot at this point, you probably typed
something wrong. Experience tells me that the only thing to do is to
start over from step 5.

14) You should now see a text menu. Choose the option to start a command prompt
with network access (something like that);
15) Download the Nvidia driver with the command $ wget
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/256.53/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.53.run;;
16) If you're not root already, switch to root using $ sudo su followed by
your password;
17) Change the system runlevel with the command $ telinit 3;
18) Install the driver with the command $ NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.53.run. I
remember the install giving me warnings that I igored. Ignore them;
19) The driver is installed, but your troubles aren't quite over; The driver
screws up reading the EDID file, so that needs fixing;
20) Make a copy of the EDID file with the command $ cp
/proc/acpi/video/PEG0/LCD0/EDID /etc/X11/edid.bin;
21) Backup any old xorg.conf file with the command $ cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf$(date +%Y%m%d%H%M)
22) Create an xorg.conf file under /etc/X11 that looks like this:

Section ServerLayout
Identifier Layout0
Screen  0  Screen0 0 0
InputDeviceKeyboard0 CoreKeyboard
InputDeviceMouse0 CorePointer
EndSection

Section Files

23) Reboot and cross your fingers.

2010-11-29 Thread felipemoraes
ChrisSteinbach, your solution worked for me, thanks a lot! In my case there are
some details thought:
1-using nomodeset I could actually see what I was doing
2-text mode with network, failed me(3G usb minimodem), I just mounted my
windows partition, which had the linux nvidia driver
3- I use nvidia linux driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.21.run, which is run
sudo sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.21.run
4 - my path was not /proc/acpi/video/PEG0/LCD0/EDID, but
/proc/acpi/video/XVS0/LCD0/EDID. I could obtain this path using a lot of cd
/directory and ls commands
5-unable to modify a text file on text mode, I just used nomodeset again and
entered failsafe-x, where I could actually change xorg.conf. After nouveau
deletion, I noted which recovery modefailsafe-x is a working possibility too.
When there is an userland solution I would be glad to download a updated ubuntu
install cd and reinstall my root partition!

[Bug 660331] Re: hp touchsmart 600-1010br no video

2010-11-28 Thread felipemoraes
Hello people, i´m here to report my findings lately:
Having been able to enter ubuntu in failsafe x, I updated the entire system,
and also as the link I said before on askubuntu showed, I installed the nvidia
drivers, first the usual way, later manually, downloading from nvidia site the
drivers file and giving sudo sh on the file.
Both ways have made my ubuntu live more miserable, as both resulted in ubuntu
showing the initial loading screen, then the screen went black, then white,
then colorfull(not necessaryly in this order), again and again until I
restarted with ctrl+alt+del. nomodeset wasnt working anymore too.
Since I had got really happy which ubuntu at least started, I had moved all my
files from windows to ubuntu(some important ones too), before the crazy
after-driver update screen problem. Then I passed hell to retrieve my files
after the video driver update, as the /home partition was encripted and I had
to recover it the hard
wayhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedPrivateDirectory, as ubuntu
encryption helper file failed me. After I reinstalled the root partition, I
solved my encription problems ubuntu text-mode way.
I find strange which installing the video drivers gave such results, when it
should actually enable ubuntu to boot with normal graphics. Also don´t forget
to call me when there is a possible fix. Thanks for the help!

2010-11-26 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Felipe, sorry you're having trouble.

I think that you will have better luck trying to get technical help
through one of the technical support forums such as askubuntu.com or
other options listed at www.ubuntu.com/support. This bug tracker is
more for bugs that have been troubleshot to specific defects in the
distribution, whereas it sounds like you're more interested in just
getting your system functioning!

If you do want to pursue this as a defect rather than a support request,
we'll need full X and kernel logs and such.

2010-11-26 Thread felipemoraes
I can´t give X or kernel logs, as I can´t even acess ubuntu in any
graphic way. It seems the HP touchsmart video card isn´t properly
recognized by ubuntu(or linux, i don´t know). I asked if there isn´t
other way to help without having to enter ubuntu for such.

This bug tracker is more for bugs that have been troubleshot to
specific defects in the distribution, whereas it sounds like you're more
interested in just getting your system functioning! What do you mean by
that? Of course I want my ubuntu working, I have been waiting for almost
2 months now... but for that the video issue has to be fixed, but I
can´t give detailed reports as I can´t even acess ubuntu, as it has no
graphics.

I will try the links you spoke of, hope they help me, otherwise it seems
I´m done with ubuntu, as I will have not managed to workaround the video
issue and the bug report isn´t going anywhere.

2010-11-09 Thread komputes
You will most likely need the nvidia binary drivers to get the
resolution expected. You can achieve graphically by going so System
Administration Additional Drivers. If you really cannot use the
graphical interface at all, there is another way- boot while pressing
shift, then select recovery menu. Once there, you can drop to a netroot
shell and run jockey-text to detect hardware and have it propose a
driver. You may also want to update your system at this point. In the
recovery menu, you can issue the command reboot, or press ctrl-d to
return to the menu.

If installing the binary driver with jockey does not resolve the issue,
please run the following command to grab bug info from this machine:

$ apport-bug --save /home//username/report.bug xorg

to press shift, as the menu shows naturaly. I´m only able to write this reply
right now because the last mentioned OS works normally.

I found a bug much like this one(bug 616023), but it was marked as
fixed, maybe i this problem was fixed for some types of nvidia video

[Bug 660331] Re: hp touchsmart 600-1010br no video

2010-11-09 Thread komputes
No problem.We're here to help.

Have you given a try to the 32-bit image? Does this hardware work with
an older version of Ubuntu.

Usually if the graphic mode doesn't work, recovery mode should work as
expected, but you say that you see a black screen.

I would say that much more work remains to be done on this video card
driver to be properly supported out of the box. If we could identify the
card PCI ID and driver (lspci -nnk) at least we can point this bug to
the proper project.

Until then, please keep up the testing and posting your findings on this
bug. Thanks.

[Bug 660331] Re: hp touchsmart 600-1010br no video

2010-11-09 Thread felipemoraes
Yes, have tested with the 32-bits version already. I only recall which I
haven´t tested lucid x64, but with my conection speed this image would
take 2 or 3 days do download. One of the guys of the bug I mentioned
about nvdia drivers got a black screen at recovery mode too.

There isn´t any info I can obtain about the video card without being on
linux which could help speed things up?
