Apparently after 3 years the problem hasn't been solved: it appeared suddenly to me too, but a few days ago everything was fine. This unresolved issue is one of the reasons I have completely given up Kile and moved to MacTex (http://www.tug.org/mactex/2011/) on a MacBook Pro. MacTex is an amazing piece of software that just works out of the box. I haven't had a single issue with packages or versions or keeping it up to date since my migration. The spell checker I've been using is the standard OS X spellchecker than is present in every textbox throughout the OS. Not being funny but since 2011-06-25 (my original post) I have been working to compose my thesis. I'm not sure suggesting that people move to a new operating system is the right solution. In any case, I did discover that closing Kile and opening it again does fix the issue, although it would be nice if this were solved. It's quite obnoxious to have it come and go on occasion. (Oh, and I am also working on my thesis! I can confirm Stephan's observation. (Kile Version 2.0.85) And maybe I can contribute with two other observations of mine. (1) When encountering the issue, changing the dictionary from English (UK) to English (US) fixes the problem. Reverting to the UK dictionary brings back the problem, the only solution being, eventually, closing the files and restarting Kile. I saw the same problem today on files that were automatically re-opened when launching kile. I have this problem too. It wasn't here before. I composed a .tex file with satisfactory performance by the spell check feature of Kile. However, when I returned to the document Kile thinks the capital letter of the first letter at the start of a sentence (for a correctly spelt word) is an error.
