Well I've managed to use Unity for a couple of days and its held up now. Some other glitches still about but not the one I reported here. This has been tested by suspending and resuming the system over the last two days as well so compiz has had no real restarts either but managed to keep ticking along. Just given it a test run and so far I have not experienced the issue so far. I open several QT/KDE apps and did not hang the desktop (I did experience a few unrelated visual bugs though E.g. dock area would not update when dock slide out). Some updated information following the recent Natty updates. These two updates (and the bugs they were to solve) seem to have improved but not fixed the issue: Unity 3.8.8-0ubuntu1 #757709 Compiz 1:0.9.4+bzr20110411-0ubuntu2 #758307 If the KDE sound system is off in the KDE notification system settings then Krita and Kpresenter will almost always start fine. Kdevelop however, still causes the same interface hang on exiting the program (starts OK). When this happens, after I kill Xorg and log back in Knotify is again eating the CPU. If the KDE Sound system is on for its notifications then Krita will once again hang the window system. Again, killing Xorg and login back in shows Knotify using all the CPU. I seem to always be able to start Kpresenter without hanging the window system now even with the sound on for Notifications. Some more info: I've managed to get Krita to start correctly by going to "Applications and System Nitrifications">"Manage Notifications">"Tab:Player Settings" and setting "No audio output". This allows Krita to start once but if I exit and start the application again the screen (not the mouse) stalls again. I noticed that Knotify is usually (not always) using 100% CPU when this happens. If I disable all the Application sounds under "KDE Workspace" (use "Use the KDE sound system" selected) then Krita will also start one time. I have not narrowed down which sounds have this affect but having the following on causes Krita to fail everytime: * Logout * Information Message * Catastrophe * Warning * Crital Message * Warning message * Notification * Fatal Error Kdevelop also started with the notification sounds turned off but on exit the interface stalled again. ** Description changed: Binary package hint: unity Simply login into a Natty "Ubuntu" session (Thus Compiz with Unity plugin) and launch a KDE app. Upon loading or doing some activity in the KDE app the interface will appear to hang but the mouse continues to work. It is not a hard lock as I can jump to a terminal (ctrl+alt+f1) or restart the Xorg server with alt+SysRq+k. Switching back from a terminal to the graphic session sometimes leaves the appearance of the terminal on the screen but the mouse pointer is there and still works and appears to be a painting update issue with the desktop. Note not all KDE apps will cause the interface hang. Kate seems to work just fine. Apps that cause the issue every time are: * KDevelop. As soon as KDevelop begins to load (shows the splash screen) the desktop interface will hang. * Krita. The Template selection/Recent document screen works just fine but as soon as you try to load a template or actual krita document the interface will hang. Some times when the interface has stalled (It still shows the template selection screen and any window that was showng at the time) if I move the cursor around it changes to Krita's paint brush cursor and back to the normal pointer in other areas as if the Krita window was actually there. + * Kpresenter. It has in the past (previous ubuntu releases) when I have experienced similar issues with compiz not updating the screen. These KDE apps work just fine if I login with the "Ubuntu classic desktop" (Compiz enabled, Unity plug-in disabled) session. The whole session seems quite stable. Also works fine in a KDE Plasma desktop session. I've tried different combinations of Compiz plugins but the interface stalls every time with those KDE apps no matter what compiz plugins I have enabled. I will update the report with a few more KDE apps that cause the same problem. If you need me to run some more tests, or can tell me how I can capture some more debugging information (or where to read up on it), I'll try to do so. This is on an Intel Core2 duo laptop with x3100 gpu, 32bit Ubuntu Natty install with PAE kernel. I have another system, AMD Phenom, Nvidia 460 GPU with Natty 64bit installed that runs the same KDE apps in Unity just fine. When I get the chance, I have another system with Natty 32 bit installed (Athlon Xp, Nvidia GPU) that I will test to see if it is a general 32bit issue or maybe more of a Intel GPU specific issue.
