I have been having that same issue, and can confirm that killing unity- 2d-launcher solved the problem for me without issue. This happened again just now when the update manager popped up. Pressing alt+F1, moving up and down a bit, and then clicking a launcher icon made it hide again. Running Metacity ;p Graphic card has been blacklisted for Unity (and Compiz). It was still responsive, only it wouldn't hide anymore. I dunno if killing it would have worked, but I guess it would. This bug has appeared two times now, if it does appear again, I'll try it out. Anyway, last time I killed the Unity 2D Launcher, the Dash didn't "reattach" to the launcher. You can have Unity2D with Compiz (please do a quick "ps aux | grep metacity" just to check), though it ideally shouldn't happen. I'm completely unable to reproduce anything like this. When the Launcher stays stuck open, it is still responsive? Can you launch new apps? Right-click on tiles and get a menu? Drag the launcher icons up/down? If you bring up a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T), type "killall unity-2d- launcher" the launcher should relaunch and work normally. Does the highlight bug reappear again? Usual Ubuntu session is selected in LightDM, but it's running Unity 2D, so no compiz. I don't know as this appears without any known trigger, if I press alt+F1 the glows white, pressing alt+F1 again doesn't do anything at those times but clicking somewhere else does. Hi Robin, have you logged in as the usual Ubuntu session, or definitely using Unity2D? I'm curious if you're running Compiz or Metacity. If you press Escape after Alt+F1, the highlight should disappear & the launcher side away. Does that work? White highlight over launcher items means that item has focus, allowing you to navigate using a keyboard. It's invoked with alt+f1 shortcut.
