[Bug 877666] Re: Dell XT2 touchpad not recognized

2012-10-19 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
BitBurners.com, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the
daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested
and remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located
at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the text:
needs-upstream-testing

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why
specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I don't know why I have not discovered this earlier, even with intense
googling. Turns out that 'mouseemu' is a decent workaround.

1) Install package 'mouseemu'
2) Run the command on terminal: mouseemu -typing-block 500

The 500 sets the delay to 500ms - adjust at will. Make the command run
on system boot to make the change permanent. Not perfect, but improves
things quite a bit.

[Bug 877666] Re: Dell XT2 touchpad not recognized

2012-01-13 Thread Seth Forshee
The trackstick dump data definitely doesn't seem to match what's
expected by a dualpoint v2 device. The thing to do now is to try
different things with the trackstick and watch how the data changes to
see what parts of the data correspond to different actions.
Unfortunately without having hardware I won't be able to help much
beyond offering suggestions.

What you're likely to see is one field in the data represents the
magnitude and direction of motion on the x axis and another will
represent the same data on the y axis. Other fields (probably single
bits) might represent trackstick buttons. There may also be a field
representing downward pressure.

I can confirm that vertical scrolling works nicely, horizontal does not
at all, and trackstick causes the cursor to go totally wild. My second
dmesg dump (with alps_dump_packets enabled) looks exactly like
previously reported.

Functional vertical scroll alone is a big step forward.

[Bug 877666] Re: Dell XT2 touchpad not recognized

2011-12-10 Thread BitBurners.com
Heres more Dmesg data. Touchpad was not touched, so only joystick movent
and also some keyboard presses to get back to Terminal. Data attached.

Sorry, by side scrolling, I meant vertical scrolling which is
initiated by moving the finger up/down at the right edge of the
touchpad.

I don't have a copy of Windows I could try with this laptop, and I have
never used Windows on this laptop so hard to say how it works there.
Basically it seems to work just fine with your .deb - it registers
clicks and movement correctly, and now with that scrolling. The key
addition of course would be to be able to disable, or enabling the
disable when typing -feature.

2011-12-08 Thread BitBurners.com
Hi Seth,

After installing your .deb and modprobing the mouse, following was
observed:

- Touchpad remained functional
- Touchpad support improved, as side-scrolling now worked
- Joystick however went totally haywire - touching the stick caused erratic
mouse behaviour all over the screen.

Dmesgs are attached.

[Bug 877666] Re: Dell XT2 touchpad not recognized

2011-12-08 Thread Seth Forshee
It seems my first guess was pretty close! If side scrolling is working
then we're definitely in the neighborhood. Does vertical scrolling also
work? Give the touchpad a pretty thorough workout and see if any
expected features aren't working (it's helpful if you know what features
are supported under Windows, e.g. two-fingered scrolling, etc.). Also
let me know if you see any erratic behavior.

We'll need to debug the trackstick a bit more it seems. Can you redo the
second part of the test (collect dmesg after doing the 'echo 1 | ...'
command), only this time rather than wiggling your finger on the
touchpad, move the trackstick around a bit before collecting dmesg.
Please try not to touch the touchpad at all, as I want to see only data
from the trackstick so I can try and determine if it corresponds to any
data format the driver already supports.

[Bug 877666] Re: Dell XT2 touchpad not recognized

2011-12-07 Thread Seth Forshee
It looks like there's a pretty good chance this is an ALPS touchpad.
I've uploaded a test package that I'd like you to try. It's highly
likely this package won't work and will make your touchpad unusable
while you are testing it, so I suggest you have an external USB mouse
available while testing.

Prerequisite steps for testing:

 1. Run the command 'sudo apt-get install input-utils' in a terminal

After that, please download the following file:

http://people.canonical.com/~sforshee/lp877666/psmouse-alps-dkms
/psmouse-alps-dkms_0.11_all.deb

Then follow the following procedure for testing.

 1. Open a terminal, navigate to the directory where you downloaded the file,
and run the command 'sudo apt-get install psmouse-alps-dkms_0.11_all.deb'
 2. Run the command 'sudo modprobe -r psmouse' followed by 'sudo modprobe
psmouse'
 3. Before trying to use the touchpad, run'sudo dmesg -c dmesg1.txt'
 4. Try using the touchpad and trackstick, noting what happens when using each

If the trackstick and touchpad are working, go ahead and report back
your results here, including the dmesg1.txt file. If it isn't working or
behaves erratically, continue with the following steps.

 5. In a terminal, run 'echo 1 | sudo tee
/sys/module/psmouse/parameters/alps_dump_packets'
 6. Wiggle your finger around on the touchpad a bit, then run 'sudo dmesg -c
dmesg2.txt

Then post your results along with dmesg1.txt and dmesg2.txt here. To get
back to your original state when you're finished, run the following
three commands:

  sudo apt-get remove psmouse-alps-dkms
  sudo modprobe -r psmouse
  sudo modprobe psmouse

If that doesn't get your touchpad working, try rebooting.

Thanks!

[Bug 877666] Re: Dell XT2 touchpad not recognized

2011-10-26 Thread Joseph Salisbury
This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since it also exists with
Fedora. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report at
bugzilla.kernel.org [1]? That will allow the upstream Developers to
examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

If you are comfortable with opening a bug upstream, It would be great if
you can report back the upstream bug number in this bug report. That
will allow us to link this bug to the upstream report.

The bugzilla.kernel.org may still be unavailable due to the recent
break-in. One alternative would be to report this directly to the
subsystem maintainer or to the Linux Kernel Mailing List - linux-
ker...@vger.kernel.org
