[Bug 923226] Re: Update celt to 0.11.3
Some of the people on the Mumble server I visit only have 0.11.3 installed, and do not install 0.7.1. Due to this, I can't communicate with them. Would it be possible to create two versions of celt for the repositories, one that stays current and one that stays at 0.7.1 so that it remains backwards-compatible? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/923226 Title: Update celt to 0.11.3 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/celt/+bug/923226/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 923226] Re: Update celt to 0.11.3
These people you can't talk to have broken Mumble installs; the Mumble INSTALL document explicitly says that, if you tell it to use the system-installed CELT; this requires that you have CELT 0.7.0 or 0.7.1 installed on your system as CELT does not maintain bitstream compatibility Mumble supports multiple concurrent versions of libcelt, and will pick the latest version that all people on the server supports. However, the universal fallback that is supported on all platforms, across all versions, is CELT 0.7.1. Mumble's tarball does bundle CELT, and if you compile mumble without CONFIG+=no-bunbled-celt, it will compile and use both a 0.7.0 and a 0.11.0 library. This isn't good for package maintenance though; we don't want multiple copies of libcelt with different origins.

[Bug 923226] Re: Update celt to 0.11.3
The bug description says Due to the package in the repository being so out of date, it doesn't work with certain applications such as Mumble. If that's false, can we update the description to remove it? If it's true, and if it's also true, as comment #5 says, that the newest is too new for mumble, then we need some other action to fix mumble right? Perhaps, as spice does, include the needed version straight into mumble? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/923226 Title: Update celt to 0.11.3 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/celt/+bug/923226/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 923226] Re: Update celt to 0.11.3
Thorvald, thanks for your input. Do you have thoughts on how we should proceed with this? It seems the Debian celt package hasn't moved in some time. Should we look to introduce a new versioned in name binary package for celt? Thanks ** Changed in: celt (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/923226 Title: Update celt to 0.11.3 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/celt/+bug/923226/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 923226] Re: Update celt to 0.11.3
Unless you have another package that depends on a newer version of CELT, is there a reason to package the new one? Debian has deliberately not packaged a newer version because there isn't a single package that depends on newer versions, whereas Mumble does depend on 0.7.1. Newer versions of packaging are sitting in git, but there just hasn't been any point in releasing them; we'd have to have both versions, which introduces hassle and complexity without any clear benefit. Most of CELT upstream's efforts are going towards Opus, the new codec from IETF. CELT is part of this new codec, so it's unlikely that new software will be developed that depend on stand-alone CELT after Opus has been released. Mumble has Opus code ready to go, but we can't release it until the standardization in IETF is finished. Are there any new packages that need CELT 0.11? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/923226 Title: Update celt to 0.11.3 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/celt/+bug/923226/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 923226] Re: Update celt to 0.11.3
Upgrading (and replacing) the old CELT will actually break Mumble, as CELT releases have non-compatible bitstreams, and the fallback- compatible bitstream in Mumble is CELT 0.7.1.
[Bug 923226] Re: Update celt to 0.11.3
The attachment Debdiff to update to 0.11.3 of this bug report has been identified as being a patch in the form of a debdiff. The ubuntu- sponsors team has been subscribed to the bug report so that they can review and hopefully sponsor the debdiff. In the event that this is in fact not a patch you can resolve this situation by removing the tag 'patch' from the bug report and editing the attachment so that it is not flagged as a patch. Additionally, if you are member of the ubuntu- sponsors team please also unsubscribe the team from this bug report. [This is an automated message performed by a Launchpad user owned by Brian Murray.
