[Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver
Wait: why is this marked "fix released"? Problem exists on a fresh install of 13.04. I don't so much care about compiz not having the right refresh rate OOTB, but changing it and having that setting forgotten after a reboot is *maddening*. It shouldn't take to much to make sure two settings (detect refresh rate, manual refresh rate entry) don't erase themselves every boot, and I'd consider the problem fixed if this were the case. But having to resort to a kluudge (bash script with sleep 5 in it? Really?) isn't really... optimal. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/92599 Title: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/92599/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver
** Description changed: The problem here is that incorrect information from the NVIDIA driver is tricking some software like Compiz into using an incorrect refresh rate, which makes the whole desktop look choppy. The cause of this framerate problem is the DynamicTwinView feature of the NVIDIA graphics driver. It appears to be a documented "feature" of the driver, and has been for several years: --- Quote from the NVIDIA documentation --- Option "DynamicTwinView" "boolean" Enable or disable support for dynamically configuring TwinView on this X screen. When DynamicTwinView is enabled (the default), the refresh rate of a mode (reported through XF86VidMode or XRandR) does not correctly report the refresh rate, but instead is a unique number such that each MetaMode has a different value. This is to guarantee that MetaModes can be uniquely identified by XRandR. When DynamicTwinView is disabled, the refresh rate reported through XRandR will be accurate, but NV-CONTROL clients such as nvidia-settings will not be able to dynamically manipulate the X screen's MetaModes. TwinView can still be configured from the X config file when DynamicTwinView is disabled. Default: DynamicTwinView is enabled. --- End quote --- [http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/280.13/README/xconfigoptions.html] - WORKAROUND: + WORKAROUND (1) (in /etc/X11/xorg.conf) Section "Device" Option "DynamicTwinView" "False" EndSection If the workaround doesn't work for you and you still see stuttering/jerkiness then you probably have bug 888039, which is caused by other performance regressions in the Ubuntu 11.10 release. + + WORKAROUND (2) + + CCSM > Composite > + Detect Refresh Rate = OFF + Refresh Rate = 60 (or whatever is correct for you monitor) ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Binary package hint: xorg My Samsung SyncMaster 931BF does actually support 75 hz screen refresh rate, but xorg lets me choose only between 50 Hz and 54 Hz. [Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver
I'm not sure about bug 888039 because it's hard to reproduce (for me) and hard to distinguish between other similar performance bugs. I think it's likely half the people subscribed to that bug were actually seeing different bugs, some of which are now fixed. Versions vv9 and vv10 only changed the Move plugin to make moving windows faster and more responsive (bug 764330). But it's excellent that ppa:vanvugt/compiz now contains enough fixes that things have improved considerably for you. I hope all the fixes in there get approved in time to go into Ubuntu 12.04.

Daniel, I don't know what are the changes between version vv9 and vv10 of compiz, but now things have improved considerably. Most notably, I can't tell the difference with or without Twinview. I tested also with several suspend/resume cycles and I saw no performance slowdowns. Finally, also bug #888039 seems now fixed to me. [Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver
"However, it seems to me that performance is still a little better when *not* using twinview." This is not surprising. Regretfully compiz does have to use the detected frame rate for some (very few) things even with the fix. And if the frame rate reported by the driver is still wrong (TwinView enabled) then some things might still be slightly worse performing than with TwinView disabled. The solution should simply be setting the correct refresh rate in CCSM (Composite Section): Detect Refresh Rate = OFF Refresh Rate = the correct refresh rate of your monitor -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/92599 Title: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/92599/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver
Daniel, I resetted unity (--reset) and tried both your compiz and unity packages (vv7 and vv5 respectively). The combination of both solved my performance problems almost completely, putting unity on par with gnome-shell. However, it seems to me that performance is still a little better when *not* using twinview. I've used the PC for some days and I've not seen any issue. Just one time, when looking at a youtube video, compiz froze and I had to switch to another VT to restart lightdm. That was quite annoying given the lack of a ctrl-alt-canc substitute in ubuntu. Finally, bug #888039 is still here. Moving windows after hours of usage, and some suspend/resume cycles, goes at a low framerate. restarting X solves the problem. [Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver
Experimental fixes for this and related performance bugs are now available for testing in ppa:vanvugt/compiz and ppa:vanvugt/unity. For the best results I recommend trying both together. But testing them individually is useful too. IMPORTANT NOTES: * The fixes in ppa:vanvugt/compiz REQUIRE that "Sync To VBlank" is ENABLED in CompizConfig Settings Manager (OpenGL section). This is the default setting when Ubuntu 11.10 is installed. * When using ppa:vanvugt/compiz you should DISABLE the workaround "Force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on repaint" in CompizConfig Settings Manager (Workarounds section). This is the default setting when Ubuntu 11.10 is installed. * I don't claim to have fixed all tearing. I only claim that the amount of tearing in oneiric with the fix is no longer worse than in natty. * nouveau: If you are using the "nouveau" driver for NVIDIA chips you will need to enable sync-to-vblank support in the driver options because nouveau has it disabled by default. You can do this by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf and adding: Section "Device" Identifier "My Graphics" Option "GLXVBlank" "on" EndSection Then log out and in again for it to take effect. * fglrx (Catalyst): The fglrx driver also disables sync-to-vBlank support by default. To fix this: 1. Open Catalyst Control Center. 2. Go to 3D > More Settings. 3. Set "Wait for vertical refresh" to "On, unless application specifies". * Please don't try using the Benchmark plugin in compiz-plugins-extra because it is broken and misleading (bug 898548). When DynamicTwinView is disabled, the refresh rate reported through XRandR will be accurate, but NV-CONTROL clients such as nvidia-settings will not be able to dynamically manipulate the X screen's MetaModes. [Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver
@Chauncellor... If disabling DynamicTwinView didn't work for your nvidia system, try setting this in CCSM: Detect Refresh Rate = OFF Refresh Rate = the real refresh rate of your monitor, maybe even higher. If that still doesn't work then you are not experiencing bug 92599. But read on... In CCSM again, go to the Workarounds section and enable: Force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on repaint. If that solves your problems then you're probably experiencing tearing, not stuttering or a low frame rate, so you actually have bug 880707. [Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver
Ron, if the xorg.conf workaround doesn't work for you either then you're experiencing a different bug. Please log a new one. Please also log a separate bug for the Tux Racer corruption issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/92599 Title: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nvidia-drivers-ubuntu/+bug/92599/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver
Daniel, no luck with smooth windows after disabling Detect Refresh Rate. In fact, they became jerky again. Also, it turns out that disabling Bailer didn't work well either. What does seem to work is disabling all Window Management options except Move Window and Resize Window. Lastly, as another bit of info: the OpenGL game Extreme Tux Racer performs well, but the screen is corrupted upon exit. Attached is a screenprint demonstrating the problem. Actually *doing* the screen print refreshed the screen. ** Attachment added: "Corrupted display after exiting Tux Racer" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20/+bug/92599/+attachment/2523403/+files/Corrupted_display.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/92599 Title: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nvidia-drivers-ubuntu/+bug/92599/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver
Ron, please try the workaround in the bug description above. If that fails, I suspect an alternative workaround might work: In CCSM > Composite set ... Detect Refresh Rate = OFF Refresh Rate = the real refresh rate of your monitor, maybe even higher.
Since #760814 is deemed a duplicate, I've bounced overhere. Just installed 11.04 w/ Classic (i.e., GNOME 2.32). GeForce 210 and binary driver 270.41.06-0ubuntu1. Window movement was stunningly jerky. Went into CCSM and disabled "Bailer". Now, window movement is acceptable, but glxgers is still horrible.

Re: [Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver
I checked nvidia-settings and DynamicTwinView was definitely disabled. I also set the refresh rate in CCSM to 60Hz which is what my monitor runs at. Didn't make any difference. [Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver
Please check that the NVIDIA Settings app shows Dynamic Twin View as disabled. Sorry; I forget where it is exactly, and can't show you because I stopped using NVIDIA graphics a while ago. Also, try installing compizconfig-settings-manager. Then go to: System Settings > Control Center > CompizConfig Settings Manager > Composite And check the Refresh Rate is the same as what your monitor is using.

Got subscribed here by a bug that was marked as a duplicate, however disabling DynamicTwinView did not work for me. [Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver
** Description changed: + The problem here is that incorrect information from the NVIDIA driver is + tricking some software like Compiz into using an incorrect refresh rate, + which makes the whole desktop look choppy. + The cause of this framerate problem is the DynamicTwinView feature of the NVIDIA graphics driver. It appears to be a documented "feature" of the driver, and has been for several years: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/280.13/README/xconfigoptions.html (Search for: DynamicTwinView) WORKAROUND: (in /etc/X11/xorg.conf) Section "Device" Option "DynamicTwinView" "False" EndSection ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Binary package hint: xorg My Samsung SyncMaster 931BF does actually support 75 hz screen refresh rate, but xorg lets me choose only between 50 Hz and 54 Hz.
