[Bug 130375] Is this actually a bug?

2007-08-04 Thread Joe Smith
Since it seems that you want to add a new feature to the package,
wouldn't this be something you should try to merge, rather than report
as a bug?

[Bug 28596] Re: Totem will not play dvd

2007-08-04 Thread Matthew Craig
While it is true that performing the instructions for playing encrypted DVDs,
the Americans to who I'd recommend Ubuntu would be stopped with this first
caution:
"In some countries it is possible that the use of some of the following
software to play or copy DVDs is not permitted by law. Verify that you are
within your rights in using it."

http://preview.tinyurl.com/2kakuk

As you can see with the above link, our government is very serious about
preventing circumvention of electronic data protection (DRM). News and
media outlets also are making sure citizens here know the importance of
not breaking the laws regarding electronic circumvention, so it is
becoming increasingly unlikely that average computer users here will be
willing to risk performing potentially illegal actions in order to use
their computer. (Regardless whether the two are morally, legally, or
technically equivalent, I think we can agree the console-mod busts may
prevent people from risking arrest, even if they misunderstand the
matter.)

I am curious what Canonical did for Dell's users, in the USA. Probably
pointed them to this same website? Meanwhile, unencrypted playback is
very much possible without fearing that precaution. But, the average
user is not going to know while of those steps needs to be skipped in
order to make the installation legal. That's why I think the
documentation should be updated. Ubuntu should have DVD playback, as
long as the user doesn't buy into any DRM protection rackets, which is
entirely possible although unlikely.

[Bug 130423] installing xfonts-efont-unicode reports /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc does not exist

2007-08-04 Thread Pm
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfonts-efont-unicode

Running "apt-get install xfonts-efont-unicode" displays a warning:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo apt-get install xfonts-efont-unicode

warning: /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc does not exist or is not a directory

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

I suspect this is different from #49361, in that I think #49361 reports
that the font files themselves were going to the wrong directory,
whereas in this version the font files do make it into
/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc/ as expected. I suspect the warning comes
from an incorrect path in the postinstall script associated with the
package.

Removing the package ("apt-get remove xfonts-efont-unicode") reports a
similar error at the beginning of the remove process.

Thanks,

Pm

[Bug 73759] possible workaround: NetworkManager foregrounded (please confirm)

2007-08-04 Thread Václav Šmilauer
I am unable to connect to unencrypted network with ndiswrapper or acx
driver (same card) using NetworkManager, although iwconfig+dhclient
manually works just fine.

Today I found out by accident that when I run NetworkManager as root
with --no-daemon (in root shell: killall NetworkManager; NetworkManager
--no-daemon), everything works; I repeated that many times with/without
--no-daemon to make sure that is the cause and it really seems to be the
case.

The failed case has this in the log:

Aug  4 08:50:03 [NetworkManager] _wpa_supplicant(7701):
wpa_driver_wext_set_operstate: operstate 0->0 (DORMANT)_
Aug 4 08:51:03 [NetworkManager] _Activation (wlan0/wireless):
association took too long (>60s), failing activation._

Capturing stderr of not-backgrounded NetworkManager gives this:

NetworkManager:wpa_supplicant(7592):
wpa_driver_wext_set_operstate: operstate 0->0 (DORMANT)
NetworkManager:wpa_supplicant(7592): WEXT: Operstate:
linkmode=-1, operstate=5
NetworkManager:wpa_supplicant(7592): wpa_driver_wext_associate
NetworkManager:wpa_supplicant(7592): Setting authentication
timeout: 10 sec 0 usec
NetworkManager:wpa_supplicant(7592): EAPOL: External
notification - portControl=ForceAuthorized
[...]

I am not expert on this but to me it seems that it is wpa_supplicant bug
which, in the codepath of unencrypted association, wants to talk to
either stdout, stderr or stdin, which are closed if NetworkManager is
backgrounded. I wasn't able to determine the cause of timeout from
strace -ff NetworkManager, which is quite cluttered.

Can someone else test if this works? In that case this bug will be
assigned to wpa_supplicant.

[Bug 28596] Re: Totem will not play dvd

2007-08-04 Thread Phil Bull
I am extremely reluctant to change any legal warning such as this.

You state that "unencrypted playback is very much possible without
fearing that precaution". While this may be the situation in the USA, I
can make no guarantees that the playback of unencrypted DVDs is legal in
all countries. For example, some countries may prohibit the viewing of
DVDs altogether.

The warning instructs the user to verify their rights themselves, and
from a legal perspective I think that this is the most reasonable
approach.

Ah, too easy.
My Thunderbird is set for automatic upgrade, and is currently 1.5.0.12,

Still no buttons. I begin to suspect the problem is in my installation

[Bug 53899] Re: Memory leak when accessing services through getservbyname()

2007-08-04 Thread Paul Dufresne
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better.
I just compiled your code snippet on Gutsy and run it.
It seems to stay at either 1708 or 1712 for VIRT column in TOP.
I am not a developer, but it seems to me that this indicate the bug must have
been fixed now.
So I am closing this bug.
Feel free to reopen if you think I am wrong.

[Bug 128085] Re: Dell 1521 SB600 Azalia sound card not working in Feisty and Gutsy, working on Edgy (FIXABLE!)

2007-08-04 Thread Ben Collins
Saying "FIXABLE" when the "fix" is to recompile the bleeding edge of the
entire sound subsystem, is a little misleading, IMO.

Someone needs to find the specific patch in current alsa that makes this
work.

[Bug 44116] Re: reportbug uses debian smtp server which fails to relay

2007-08-04 Thread Brian Brunswick
This doesn't actually appear to be fixed by this change.
I just tried to report a bug using a new fresh, reportbugrc, and got

Connecting to bugs.debian.org via SMTP...
SMTP send failure: {'[EMAIL PROTECTED]': (550, 'relay not permitted')}

So bugs.debian.org is also no good for ubuntu. Surely it should be using
an ubuntu smtp server?

[Bug 130437] udev rule can fail to run ifdown, break reinserting device

2007-08-04 Thread Brian Brunswick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ifupdown

Package: ifupdown
Version: 0.6.8ubuntu6
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

In the /etc/udev/rules.d/85-ifupdown.rules, the remove
rule is, like the add one, conditionalised under
SUBSYSTEM=="net" and DRIVERS=="?*". Unfortunately,
on my system (cdc usb ether driver, connecting to openmoko phone)
the DRIVERS variable isn't set at all when the device is unplugged.

This causes ifdown to fail to be run on device removal, which prevents
the device working next time it is plugged in, since ifup doesn't
do anything when the interface is already up.

Fix: Move the remove line to the end of the file, and insert conditional
subsystem.

SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="remove", RUN+="/sbin/start-stop-daemon

Public bug reported:

Me again from

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.22/+bug/127578

when I close the lid on my laptop, suspend and resume (whatever I select
in the power management ) locks my system, although an echo "3" >
/proc/acpi/sleep works fineall my outputs of dmesg and whatnot are
on the link above, if you need any more info, please ask.

Thanks,
Artie

I am reasonably sure the dhcdbd messages are related to the network
event. I unplugged from one ethernet cable to another one. Why? From a
short cable to a longer one to move from a table across the room. This
message repeats.

Once before, I chased down this code through the network if scripts and
couldn't see an easy workaround.

[Bug 130410] Re: Remove Ubuntu

2007-08-04 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How
to report bugs effectively" [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems. [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 75295] Re: Feisty freeze, kernel (?) tries to access DVD drive

2007-08-04 Thread Andreas
Hi,

the described bug was present on my HP nx6325 with TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-
L632D as well. I use openSUSE 10.2 and tried many different (vanilla)
kernel versions up to 2.6.22 and a lot of kernel parameters without any
success. The problem occurred very often after usage of the DVD drive
(shortly after spinning down), but also from time to time when I did not
use the drive at all.

===Solution for me (might void warranty):===
A firmware update for the DVD drive from version HH15 to version SC04 fixed the
problem for my notebook. The bug did not appear once in a test period of
several weeks with low drive usage.

At the time of the update, no official firmware update was available for
my drive. Instead, I downloaded the SC04 update for another TS-L632D
drive from the Korean web site of Samsung, extracted the firmware image,
and flashed that using another version of sfdnwin which permits cross-
flashing. Please note that this cross-flashing is not recommended by the
manufacturer and might render the warranty void.

Regards,
Andreas

[Bug 129575] Re: Version control system warnings intrusive and unclear

2007-08-04 Thread Emmet Hikory
I'm really not sure that changing the warning alone is sufficient.
Regardless of the -y option, I would prefer that apt not ask for
confirmation before downloading the repository source. There are
several use cases that are improved by using the repository source, as
follows:

1) A Ubuntu developer wishes to work on source maintained in a VCS in
Debian. In this case, the use of the VCS version may not be correct at
all, as there may be many changes to the source in the repositories that
are not reflected in the VCS. This issue is compounded for Ubuntu
derivatives, where neither the Debian nor Ubuntu VCS may be correct.

2) The downloader is interested in understanding how a feature is
implemented, or reviewing the code for some other purpose. In this
case, the use of the VCS is likely irrelevant, unless the downloader has
some reason why they would prefer the VCS, happens to have the
appropriate VCS tools installed, and needs to see the very latest code
for some reason.

3) A Debian developer wishes to download Ubuntu source to review the
specific changes made in more detail than is obvious from
patches.ubuntu.com, when the Debian developer uses a VCS to manage the
package. In this case, the warning is definitely not correct, as the
specific changes in which the downloader is interested are certainly not
in the VCS.

4) A new developer is interested in preparing a patch to be sent
upstream for their pet feature, and the repositories carry the latest
upstream version. In this case, a pointer to the VCS for the packaging
is largely unimportant, as the developer is interested only in the
upstream code. It may be that this person should visit the upstream
VCS, but this may be daunting for beginners.

5) A user is required to recompile to enable some compile-time option as
indicated in the documentation. Such user may well be an LTS user, and
so the VCS maintained version may not be appropriate (especially if the
package maintainer does not branch at each upload).

6) A user has encountered a behavioral change in the package, and wishes
to understand the differences between two versions. For such a user,
redirection to the VCS may require review of significantly more output
(which may be less obvious to generate) than using versioned apt-get
(e.g. apt-get source myfavoritepackage=5.3.6-3ubuntu14) and debdiff.

Contrariwise, I believe the only use case improved by stopping to ask is
that an Ubuntu developer working on a package maintained in an Ubuntu
VCS is notified that changes should be committed to the VCS rather than
uploaded blindly.

[Bug 130442] Kubuntu falsely shows ttys in use

2007-08-04 Thread Andrew C.
Public bug reported:

In Kubuntu Feisty, inside of the K Menu -> Switch User list, TTYs that
are no longer in use still show as in use. GKrellm also shows an
incorrect user count based on this, though the 'users' command seems to
give correct output.

Steps to reproduce:
1.) Switch to VT1, login.
2.) log out.
3.) Switch back to VT7
4.) Go to K Menu -> Switch User, and observe that VT1 is still listed as in use.

This is using Kubuntu 7.04, with KDE 3.5.7.

[Bug 130444] Characters incorrectly echoed to virtual terminal screens

2007-08-04 Thread Axel Harvey
Public bug reported:

This is a continuation of Bug #19487 and Bug #29523, but since it seems
(at least in Feisty Faun) to involve echoing to screen rather than the
keyboard, I thought I should post it as a separate item.

Following previous discussions, I tried locale-gen fr_CA and rebooted,
but the problem did not go away. Incidentally, the system told me it was
generating fr_CA.ISO-8859-1 but this entity was nowhere to be found
even after I had updated the database.

Therefore I am repeating the note I sent to answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu
, with the added remark that a fix is urgently needed as no civilized
person can get along without using the occasional Umlaut, cedilla, or
tilde.

[ Repeat from "answers":]

There is a problem with the echoing of characters to the screen when in
tty (virtual terminal) mode. At first I thought this was related to
fonts in general, but apparently it is not. A brief discussion can be
read in the user forum:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=512717

The environment: Feisty Fawn with kernel 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP. I don't
remember how the terminal font was selected upon installation, but on checking
the "Language Support" menu it appears that I checked English and French, and
specified "English (Canada)" as the default language. I also checked "Enable
support to enter complex characters". In the "Keyboard Preferences"
menu, the keyboard model is "Generic 105-key (intl) PC" and the layout is
"Canada French (legacy)": but I doubt the keyboard layout is relevant here in
view of the fact that everything works in GUI mode.

For example, in tty the e-acute key (é) is echoed as a blank space on the
screen. If I type it to a text file I cannot see it; but on
reading the same file with a terminal in GUI mode, the character é is displayed
properly. The same is true of all characters. Thus the font of the tty virtual
terminals is identical to that of the GUI terminal. The problem is with echoing
to the screen.

The following is the arrangement of the four rows of characters as I see
them on the GUI terminal (it is possible that you might not see them the
same way). For each now, alt-keys are listed on the top sub-row; shift-
keys on the middle sub-row; lowercase-keys on the bottom sub-row: The
explanatory notes are not necessarily exhaustive.

¬ ¹ @ ³ ¼ ½ ¾ { [ ] } | [1] [2]
° ! " # $ % ? & * ( ) _ + À <-- the last character is capital A-grave
° 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - = à <-- the last character is l.c. a-grave

q w e ¶ t ¥ u i ø þ ° [3]
Q W E R T Y U I O P [4] Ç <-- the last character is capital C-cedilla
q w e r t y u i o p [4] ç <-- the last character is l.c. c-cedilla

a s d f g h j k l ; è <-- the last character is l.c. e-grave

\ « » ¢ v b n µ < > / <-- 2nd and 3rd characters are guillemets
Ù Z X C V B N M ' . É <-- the last character is capital E-acute
ù z x c v b n m , . é <-- the last character is l.c. e-acute

NOTES:

[1] In GUI: dead key for French ç or Turkish ş.
On tty: all different.
[2] In GUI: dead key for accent sloping up to the left, e.g. ò.
On tty: all different.
[3] In GUI: dead key for tilde; follow with a space to get ~.
On tty: alt + space makes ~; other combinations are different.
[4] In GUI: dead key for circumflex; follow with a space to get ^.
On tty: makes ^ with space; other combinations are different.
[5] In GUI: dead key for accent sloping up to the right, e.g. í.
On tty: all different.

For all but the ordinary, unaccented characters, the virtual terminal
screen echoes what seem to be IBM Code Page 437 characters. The
following is what I see in tty mode. The quote marks surround code
numbers corresponding to the Code Page 437 glyphs (as best I could
identify them) that resemble what I see. The word "same" indicates that
I see the same things in tty and GUI modes; the number preceeding "same"
indicates how many characters in a row (horizontally) are the same in
both modes - e.g., "q", "w", and "e" in the 2nd row with alt are the
same in both modes, therefore 3same is noted. A question mark ?
indicates that I couldn't be sure of the character code or that the
result varied when a dead key was used with different letters.

TOP ROW, ALT
"202", "211", 1same, "205", "214", "215", "216", 5same, ?, ?
TOP ROW, SHIFT
"176", 12same, "218"
TOP ROW, L.C.
"176", 12same, "248"

2ND ROW, ALT
3same, "208", 1same, "005", 2same, "015", "021", "176", see [3]
2ND ROW, SHIFT
10same, see [4], "224"
2ND ROW, L.C.
10same, see [4], "223 ?"

3RD ROW, ALT
?, "247", ?, "190", 5same, ?, 1same
3RD ROW, SHIFT
10same, "225"
3RD ROW, L.C.
10same, blank

4TH ROW, ALT
1same, "191", "213", "004", 3same, "207", 3same
4TH ROW, SHIFT
"242", 9same, "226"
"016", 9same, blank

What I think should happen, of course, is that I would see the same
things in tty mode as on the GUI terminal.

[Bug 125986] Re: [MASTER] No flash after update of flashplugin-nonfree

2007-08-04 Thread Toma
Maybe this has shown us the need for universe and multiverse to be
included in the feisty-updates line?

## universe WILL NOT receive any review or updates from the Ubuntu security

Interesting?

@shanen

Just add universe and multiverse to your feisty-updates line.
eg.

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty-updates main restricted
multiverse universe

and you should be good to go.
