[Bug 28596] Re: Totem will not play dvd
While it is true that performing the instructions for playing encrypted DVDs, the Americans to who I'd recommend Ubuntu would be stopped with this first caution: "In some countries it is possible that the use of some of the following software to play or copy DVDs is not permitted by law. Verify that you are within your rights in using it." http://preview.tinyurl.com/2kakuk As you can see with the above link, our government is very serious about preventing circumvention of electronic data protection (DRM). News and media outlets also are making sure citizens here know the importance of not breaking the laws regarding electronic circumvention, so it is becoming increasingly unlikely that average computer users here will be willing to risk performing potentially illegal actions in order to use their computer. (Regardless whether the two are morally, legally, or technically equivalent, I think we can agree the console-mod busts may prevent people from risking arrest, even if they misunderstand the matter.) I am curious what Canonical did for Dell's users, in the USA. Probably pointed them to this same website? Meanwhile, unencrypted playback is very much possible without fearing that precaution. But, the average user is not going to know while of those steps needs to be skipped in order to make the installation legal. That's why I think the documentation should be updated. Ubuntu should have DVD playback, as long as the user doesn't buy into any DRM protection rackets, which is entirely possible although unlikely. -- Totem will not play dvd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/28596 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 73759] possible workaround: NetworkManager foregrounded (please confirm)
I am unable to connect to unencrypted network with ndiswrapper or acx driver (same card) using NetworkManager, although iwconfig+dhclient manually works just fine. Today I found out by accident that when I run NetworkManager as root with --no-daemon (in root shell: killall NetworkManager; NetworkManager --no-daemon), everything works; I repeated that many times with/without --no-daemon to make sure that is the cause and it really seems to be the case. The failed case has this in the log: Aug 4 08:50:03 [NetworkManager] _wpa_supplicant(7701): wpa_driver_wext_set_operstate: operstate 0->0 (DORMANT)_ Aug 4 08:51:03 [NetworkManager] _Activation (wlan0/wireless): association took too long (>60s), failing activation._ Capturing stderr of not-backgrounded NetworkManager gives this: NetworkManager:wpa_supplicant(7592): wpa_driver_wext_set_operstate: operstate 0->0 (DORMANT) NetworkManager:wpa_supplicant(7592): WEXT: Operstate: linkmode=-1, operstate=5 NetworkManager:wpa_supplicant(7592): wpa_driver_wext_associate NetworkManager:wpa_supplicant(7592): Setting authentication timeout: 10 sec 0 usec NetworkManager:wpa_supplicant(7592): EAPOL: External notification - portControl=ForceAuthorized [...] I am not expert on this but to me it seems that it is wpa_supplicant bug which, in the codepath of unencrypted association, wants to talk to either stdout, stderr or stdin, which are closed if NetworkManager is backgrounded. I wasn't able to determine the cause of timeout from strace -ff NetworkManager, which is quite cluttered. Can someone else test if this works? [Bug 28596] Re: Totem will not play dvd
I am extremely reluctant to change any legal warning such as this. You state that "unencrypted playback is very much possible without fearing that precaution". While this may be the situation in the USA, I can make no guarantees that the playback of unencrypted DVDs is legal in all countries. For example, some countries may prohibit the viewing of DVDs altogether. The warning instructs the user to verify their rights themselves, and from a legal perspective I think that this is the most reasonable approach. -- Totem will not play dvd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/28596 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 130437] udev rule can fail to run ifdown, break reinserting device
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ifupdown Package: ifupdown Version: 0.6.8ubuntu6 Severity: normal Tags: patch In the /etc/udev/rules.d/85-ifupdown.rules, the remove rule is, like the add one, conditionalised under SUBSYSTEM=="net" and DRIVERS=="?*". Unfortunately, on my system (cdc usb ether driver, connecting to openmoko phone) the DRIVERS variable isn't set at all when the device is unplugged. This causes ifdown to fail to be run on device removal, which prevents the device working next time it is plugged in, since ifup doesn't do anything when the interface is already up. Fix: Move the remove line to the end of the file, and insert conditional subsystem. [Bug 75295] Re: Feisty freeze, kernel (?) tries to access DVD drive
Hi, the described bug was present on my HP nx6325 with TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS- L632D as well. I use openSUSE 10.2 and tried many different (vanilla) kernel versions up to 2.6.22 and a lot of kernel parameters without any success. The problem occurred very often after usage of the DVD drive (shortly after spinning down), but also from time to time when I did not use the drive at all. ===Solution for me (might void warranty):=== A firmware update for the DVD drive from version HH15 to version SC04 fixed the problem for my notebook. The bug did not appear once in a test period of several weeks with low drive usage. At the time of the update, no official firmware update was available for my drive. Instead, I downloaded the SC04 update for another TS-L632D drive from the Korean web site of Samsung, extracted the firmware image, and flashed that using another version of sfdnwin which permits cross- flashing. Please note that this cross-flashing is not recommended by the manufacturer and might render the warranty void. [Bug 129575] Re: Version control system warnings intrusive and unclear
I'm really not sure that changing the warning alone is sufficient. Regardless of the -y option, I would prefer that apt not ask for confirmation before downloading the repository source. There are several use cases that are improved by using the repository source, as follows: 1) A Ubuntu developer wishes to work on source maintained in a VCS in Debian. In this case, the use of the VCS version may not be correct at all, as there may be many changes to the source in the repositories that are not reflected in the VCS. This issue is compounded for Ubuntu derivatives, where neither the Debian nor Ubuntu VCS may be correct. 2) The downloader is interested in understanding how a feature is implemented, or reviewing the code for some other purpose. In this case, the use of the VCS is likely irrelevant, unless the downloader has some reason why they would prefer the VCS, happens to have the appropriate VCS tools installed, and needs to see the very latest code for some reason. 3) A Debian developer wishes to download Ubuntu source to review the specific changes made in more detail than is obvious from patches.ubuntu.com, when the Debian developer uses a VCS to manage the package. In this case, the warning is definitely not correct, as the specific changes in which the downloader is interested are certainly not in the VCS. 4) A new developer is interested in preparing a patch to be sent upstream for their pet feature, and the repositories carry the latest upstream version. In this case, a pointer to the VCS for the packaging is largely unimportant, as the developer is interested only in the upstream code. It may be that this person should visit the upstream VCS, but this may be daunting for beginners. 5) A user is required to recompile to enable some compile-time option as indicated in the documentation. Such user may well be an LTS user, and so the VCS maintained version may not be appropriate (especially if the package maintainer does not branch at each upload). 6) A user has encountered a behavioral change in the package, and wishes to understand the differences between two versions. For such a user, redirection to the VCS may require review of significantly more output (which may be less obvious to generate) than using versioned apt-get (e.g. apt-get source myfavoritepackage=5.3.6-3ubuntu14) and debdiff. Contrariwise, I believe the only use case improved by stopping to ask is that an Ubuntu developer working on a package maintained in an Ubuntu VCS is notified that changes should be committed to the VCS rather than uploaded blindly. -- Version control system warnings intrusive and unclear https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/129575 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 130444] Characters incorrectly echoed to virtual terminal screens
Public bug reported: This is a continuation of Bug #19487 and Bug #29523, but since it seems (at least in Feisty Faun) to involve echoing to screen rather than the keyboard, I thought I should post it as a separate item. Following previous discussions, I tried locale-gen fr_CA and rebooted, but the problem did not go away. Incidentally, the system told me it was generating fr_CA.ISO-8859-1 but this entity was nowhere to be found even after I had updated the database. Therefore I am repeating the note I sent to answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu , with the added remark that a fix is urgently needed as no civilized person can get along without using the occasional Umlaut, cedilla, or tilde. [ Repeat from "answers":] There is a problem with the echoing of characters to the screen when in tty (virtual terminal) mode. At first I thought this was related to fonts in general, but apparently it is not. A brief discussion can be read in the user forum: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=512717 The environment: Feisty Fawn with kernel 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP. I don't remember how the terminal font was selected upon installation, but on checking the "Language Support" menu it appears that I checked English and French, and specified "English (Canada)" as the default language. I also checked "Enable support to enter complex characters". In the "Keyboard Preferences" menu, the keyboard model is "Generic 105-key (intl) PC" and the layout is "Canada French (legacy)": but I doubt the keyboard layout is relevant here in view of the fact that everything works in GUI mode. For example, in tty the e-acute key (é) is echoed as a blank space on the screen. If I type it to a text file I cannot see it; but on reading the same file with a terminal in GUI mode, the character é is displayed properly. The same is true of all characters. Thus the font of the tty virtual terminals is identical to that of the GUI terminal. The problem is with echoing to the screen. The following is the arrangement of the four rows of characters as I see them on the GUI terminal (it is possible that you might not see them the same way). For each now, alt-keys are listed on the top sub-row; shift- keys on the middle sub-row; lowercase-keys on the bottom sub-row: The explanatory notes are not necessarily exhaustive. ¬ ¹ @ ³ ¼ ½ ¾ { [ ] } | [1] [2] ° ! The quote marks surround code numbers corresponding to the Code Page 437 glyphs (as best I could identify them) that resemble what I see. The word "same" indicates that I see the same things in tty and GUI modes; the number preceeding "same" indicates how many characters in a row (horizontally) are the same in both modes - e.g., "q", "w", and "e" in the 2nd row with alt are the same in both modes, therefore 3same is noted. A question mark ? indicates that I couldn't be sure of the character code or that the result varied when a dead key was used with different letters.
