[Bug 155157] Re: no video overlay on external monitor

2008-06-25 Thread Roy Kimbrell
If the external monitor is showing a blue rectangle where the video is
supposed to be, this is probably a video overlay problem associated with
the driver for the particular graphics chips. I obtained this info from
here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=123082

I have the same problem with a Thinkpad X60s - Intel graphics. I did
what anewguy suggested and was able to display videos on an external
monitor. This will work, he says, if you have an overlay problem. You
start the video with one instance of the player (e.g., mplayer). It
should show a blue rectangle on the external monitor. Pause it and
minimize it. Then start the video again with another instance of a
player. I had to use a different program because the default program
would just start the video all over again. So I started with mplayer,
paused it. Then I started the video again with vlc. This worked. The
video showed up on the external monitor.

So at least on a Thinkpad X60s, there's an overlay problem in the
graphics drivers.

here:

  TEST CASE:
  Run `ubiquity --version` in a terminal window on the desktop CD. It should
report 1.8.12 or greater.
+ Run the installer and select Finnish as the language choice. Proceed to the
partitioning page, select manual partitioning and ensure that the buttons for

[Bug 231081] Re: ati driver will not turn on external display

2008-06-25 Thread ag65151
I did get into a conversation with the developer at the above mentioned
bug (15708).

I am happy to report that it is fixed in the latest version of the
source code. If you would like to get this version before it makes it to
the repositories, you will have to build your xorg from source. I can
say it worked fine for me with my environment on my hardware. I can make
no warranties or raise any hopes that you will have the same success.
There are instructions in the bug (
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15708 ) on how to build with
git.

Once again, it works for me, but you have to be willing to build from
scratch.

I have an idea to put chmod +w -R /home/user/ into a /etc/crontab to run

[Bug 237156] Re: SETRANS + libavg = SIGSEGV on Hardy

2008-06-25 Thread Mike Stroyan
The crash occurs when the libselinux1 library is trying to do its 'fini'
destructor functions when unloading.
It references some thread local storage variables that were statically
initialized to NULL.
That first reference fails when it actually tries to allocate the variables.
This patch explicity initializes those variables during the init function,
making the fini function work.
It seems that the real defect is in a corner case of the implementation of
__thread feature.
But changing libselinux1 this way is a practical workaround.

[Bug 206295] Re: firefox 3 right-click menu chooses random options

2008-06-25 Thread TheFallingFifth
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 187313 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/187313

This happens to me as well, and I'm running Firefox 3 on Windows XP. I
believe this problem is caused by the positioning of the context menu in
Firefox 3. In previous versions, if I remember correctly, the point
that you right-mouse click marks the corner of where the menu pops up.
In Firefox 3, I find that the point you click marks somewhere in the
middle of the menu. So, the cursor is now directly to the left of one
of the options in the menu (or, if you're on the far right side of the
screen, directly ON the menu). My guess is that if you're moving along
quickly, Firefox interprets your motion as another click and brings up
the option it thinks you clicked on. That explains why holding down the
button prevents this problem.

Still, pretty annoying, since I usually am moving my cursor around
pretty quickly.

I fail to see what is the point of this merge.
We have diverged so much that it only makes sense to just keep the Ubuntu

We may sync/merge in the future if the Debian package will converge back to

[Bug 224085] Re: [Hardy] Can't auto-mount my USB harddrives!

2008-06-25 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Don't know if bug #216483 is a duplicate.
I wrongly thought bug #235134 was a duplicate, where I have given the following
solution.

I was having an almost identical error when plugging a usb key, and
finally did found that dbus policy was saying both one thing and then
the opposite, commenting out the opposite fixed it for me:

More precisely in /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf it says:
  !-- Allow anyone to invoke methods on the Manager and Device interfaces --
  policy context=default
...
 allow send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume/

and later:
!-- Default policy for the exported interfaces --
  policy context=default
deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement/
deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.VideoAdapterPM/
deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.LaptopPanel/
deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume/
deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.Crypto/
  /policy
that I edited to become:
!-- Default policy for the exported interfaces --
  policy context=default
deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement/
deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.VideoAdapterPM/
deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.LaptopPanel/
!-- deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume/ --
!-- deny send_interface=org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.Crypto/ --
  /policy

So I just commented out the last two deny lines (note the -- at the end
too! )

It is unclear to me if latest hal in hardy-updates have still this problem.
Intrepid version (older!?) does not have this problem, because it allows it
always.

[Bug 195798] Re: Nautilus: Impossible to change case of filename/extension in Windows Share

2008-06-25 Thread Effenberg0x0
Hello Sebastien,
we have actually managed to bypass this problem in our PCs through a change in
our business process. All files are low-case in outr network now. Upper or
mixed-case in no longer allowed, so theres no need to rename files to change
the case anymore. Also, the Windows shares were replaced by a Linux storage
system, so no machine uses CIFS anymore.

The bug is still there thou: I have recently installed a new XP machine in my
home network and seen the bug again.
However, it is not important anymore for the company, as I told you above. I
won't have the resources to track this bug report furthermore, so just close it
here. As you said it, nobody else seems to care about this.

Thanks

[Bug 242873] Re: Evolution won't start after upgrade to Hardy (8.04)

2008-06-25 Thread Jon Warbrick
Note that this is not a case of Bug #236218 - I have libnss3-0d
installed:

$ apt-cache policy  libnss3-0d
libnss3-0d:
  Installed: 3.12.0.2+1.9-0ubuntu0.8.04.1

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 3.12.0~beta3-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages

Nor does it appear to be directly related to older bugs which could be
worked around by

  LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/firefox

I have a second machine that has had much the same history (though
somewhat different package lists) on which Evolution works fine. I can't
see any obvious differences in the packages installed.

2008-06-25 Thread Chris Cole
Sorry, didn't mean to give you an ouchie :). After much digging I found
the solution. Apparently using a dbus interface fixes the code. Here we
go:

hal_dot = 'org.freedesktop.Hal'
hal_path = '/org/freedesktop/Hal'

bus = dbus.SystemBus()
hal_manager = bus.get_object(hal_dot, hal_path+'/Manager')
interface = dbus.Interface(hal_manager, hal_dot+'.Manager')
udi_list = interface.FindDeviceByCapability('volume')

and voila! it works.
