[Bug 296396] [NEW] Integrate Lock screen and Login screen functionality
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: fast-user-switch-applet With the new FUSA applet design, there is still one feature, which can be improved and that is the scenario what happens when user selects lock screen. Currently the screen goes blank and when mouse moves the user is presented with modal dialog with 4 buttons: Leave message, Switch User, Cancel, Unlock. This works just fine for the currently logged in user (User 1, just type password and hit Enter), but when a different user comes (User 2), the experience can be improved. The User 2 has to decide which button to click, has to find and click Switch User button, then wait for the login screen is displayed, there he has to type or select user name and type password. If instead of the blank screen when user locks the screen the system displays the login screen, the User 2 doesn't have to be familiar with two different screens (Login & Lock), only with one (Login). I would imagine the experience to work like this: 1. User 1 selects Lock screen from the FUSA menu 2. System displays the login screen. a) If the system is configured to display user list (e.g. Human List theme), the User 1 will be selected and the password field will be displayed. If User 1 comes, he can just type the password and unlock the screen (the same user experience as before and the same user experience as if he is logged in or as if he accidentally clicked Switch User button). If User 2 comes, he can just click on his name in the list and type his password. In my opinion this is much better experience for User 2 since he is already familiar with picking name and typing password and saves him extra decision which one of the 4 buttons to click and waiting for switch to the login screen. b) If the system is configured to do not display user list (e.g. Human theme), the system would show the password field for User 1 and if User 1 comes, he can just type the password and unlock the screen (the same user experience as before). The system should display that it is asking for password for User 1 (I think this is not done currently). If User 2 comes, he would see that the system is asking for password for User 1, he can just hit Esc to get back to the user name prompt and type his name. This is much better experience for User 2 because he doesn't have to decide between the 4 buttons and just hit the Esc button. 3. One caveat to this is that the Leave message functionality is not available on the Login screen and it would have to be integrated here. Of course this would be very nice functionality anyway, if one user can leave message for another user who is not even logged in and the message would be displayed next time that user logs in. The FUSA package may not be the best place for this request, but since I do not know the propert package and the action is initialized from the new FUSA package, I am entering it here. Thank you. ** Affects: fast-user-switch-applet (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Integrate Lock screen and Login screen functionality https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296396 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 282491] Re: [intrepid] impossible to sync palm pilot device
Not really. While "If I load the pilot-link and jpilot packages and modprobe visor and use ttyUSB1 then I can sync to jpilot" - but I don't want to use the jpilot PIM. Gnome-pilot sees the PDA and the sync acts like it is going to work (the Clie makes the sync sound) but gnome-pilot then immediately fails and pops up a dialog box that reads "Device error on cradle (/dev/pilot) Caught unhandled port error". Anyway, even if I could sync to ttyUSB1, I really would like to understand why "sub:" will not work i it should! If I can solve this I plan on putting my Windows box to sleep (RIP). Being able to use my Pal Pilot is a MUST (it is my substitute brain) for making the final switch to 100% Linux after years of waiting for the Linux desktop to get to a level of usability that suited my needs. [Bug 241195] Re: Starting up a virtual machine in a virtualbox changes the display brightness (again)
Hi, I have a Compaq Presario with Intel GM965/GL960, running Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid. When booting, resuming after suspend, or switching terminals with ++, the monitor brightness increases to max. When removing the video module with "modprobe -r video", the screen brightness stays constant when switching terminals. I don't suspect the video module, as I have compiled kernel 2.6.25.7 with this video module before on Gutsy and screen brightness was stable. The brighness indicator showed up when adjusting brightness with the hotkeys. Now with the original Intrepid kernel 2.6.27-7-generic, the brighness indicator showed up a few times, but not anymore. [Bug 293535] Re: CPU always 100% CPU
I can confirm this one. I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10, and since the upgrade gconf2 is eating CPU. After installing glib debug symbols, I got this stack trace for the rampant process: (gdb) bt full #0 0x7f7c59cb41cf in poll () from /lib/libc.so.6 No symbol table info available. #1 0x7f7c5a1a23a8 in g_main_context_iterate (context=0x9c36d0, block=1, dispatch=1, self=) at /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.18.2/glib/gmain.c:3091 max_priority = 2147483647 timeout = 22440 some_ready = nfds = 51 allocated_nfds = fds = (GPollFD *) 0xcee440 __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ = "g_main_context_iterate" #2 0x7f7c5a1a2a3d in IA__g_main_loop_run (loop=0x9ccfd0) at /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.18.2/glib/gmain.c:2986 self = (GThread *) 0x9bad90 __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ = "IA__g_main_loop_run" #3 0x0040b059 in main () No symbol table info available. This seems to be a part of the normal glib main loop. From an strace, it seems that there's a lot of CORBA communication going on (lots of stuff starting with GIOP being written to sockets), but I'm unsure with what. I've tried disabling desktop effects, but the problem is there with metacity as well as with compiz (which is otherwise working fine). I also tried to disable more and more of my desktop by killing processes, on the theory that the problem is with some other application keeping gconfd busy all the time, but that didn't help any either. It's better, but not fixed completely. If you search for 'sun-java', it searches 'sun' and 'java' just like Roman Polach's 'mozilla-mplayer'. [Bug 282491] Re: [intrepid] impossible to sync palm pilot device
Ed, I'm not clear whether you triedconfiguring gnome-pilot with "usb" radio button selected and a device entry set to "/dev/ttyUSB1" instead of "usb:"? If you can use ttyUSB1 for jpilot you should be able to use it for gnome-pilot. There may be some other bug at work, but that's definitely worth trying. The problem is that there are two ways of connecting to palms under linux: either via a serial tty emulation ("visor" module, ttyUSBn devices) or directly via libusb (no "visor" module, "usb:" pilot-link device). The bug I'm trying to flag is that your device needs a specific 'tweak' in the libusb code in pilot-link's libpisock so that it speaks correctly to the clie. -- [intrepid] impossible to sync palm pilot device https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/282491 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hey there, the tool tips obviously made it in the package, but this is in my opinion not enough. What about a small text that explains not only *what* it is, but also *how* it works. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems. http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). 4. a screenshot of the window you're seeing. [Bug 293082] Re: gizmod in Ibex fails to run on amd64 systems due to bug in boost-1.34.1
That sounds preferable to me too. I don't have time to look into it just now, but I can take a look later. I don't think it should be a significant change. I keep wondering if any other packages are dealing with this right now as well? >From the threads here: http://lists.debian.org/debian- python/2008/03/msg00034.html and here: http://lists.debian.org/debian-python/2008/03/msg00033.html The python defect relating to this is here: http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0353/ This may be relevant as well: https://launchpad.net/+search?field.text=Py_InitModule4_64+undefined It seems like it might just be a build thing, with an additional flag being required by bjam. I wonder, does Ubuntu's build call bjam with python 2.5 specified? Googling for this produces quite a few results actually, but unfortunately most of the resolutions I see involve linking against python 2.4 instead of 2.5 :(. So far I'm not sure what the fix is, but I ran out of time for the moment. Will have to come back to this later. [Bug 283807] Re: freeradius with openssl support doesn't compile
Juan, I did not apply the patch directly, since the freeradius versions are different (2.0.3 x 2.1.0). Instead, I edited the files debian/rules and debian/control, following the tips in the patch file. Hope this helps. [Bug 283765] Re: package xorg-driver-fglrx 2:8.543-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: EOF on stdin at conffile prompt
I had this problem as well. After trying to install the driver, I uninstalled all the FGLRX components in gnome-terminal and tried using Hardware Drivers to install again. It worked (the driver appears as activated). I restarted and got the proper screen resolution, etc. That said, I still can't get Compiz working, though that might be a separate issue. -- package xorg-driver-fglrx 2:8.543-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: EOF on stdin at conffile prompt https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/283765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 201291] Re: Add ogv (video) and oga (audio) as recognized extension for Ogg Theora and Ogg Vorbis, respectively
Audacity 1.3.5 gives a warning when opening an .oga file. It says: "Audacity had to make a guess at the type of file. The Audio may be bogus. If the audio is bogus, try renaming the file so that it has the correct extension before opening it." Also, when saving Audacity complains that Ogg Vorbis files normally end in .ogg. Please note that the first warning (bogus audio) does not occur with Audacity 1.3.6, but the second warning is still present. ** Changed in: audacity (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- Add ogv (video) and oga (audio) as recognized extension for Ogg Theora and Ogg Vorbis, respectively https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201291 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
