[Bug 312535] Re: When trying to produce a .PDF file from openoffice

2008-12-30 Thread Jacob Peddicord
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying to help make
Ubuntu better. However, it seems that you are not using a software
package provided by the official Ubuntu repositories. OpenOffice 2.4 is
the latest supported version, and Acrobat Reader is not supported by
Ubuntu at all. Because of this the Ubuntu project can not support or fix
your particular bug. Please report this bug to the provider of the
software package. Thanks!

If you are interested in learning more about software repositories and Ubuntu
the following pages should be informative:
1. http://www.ubuntu.com/community/ubuntustory/components - information about
Ubuntu repositories
2. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories - information regarding
managing repositories

[Bug 312204] Re: Evolution can not edit google calendar appointments

2008-12-30 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
thanks for the report, could you run evolution from the command line as:
evolution &> evolution-debug.txt perform the operation in order to
reproduce the problem and attach the log file to the report? could you
also try this with a new user created on your system and another
calendar to see if it's an issue with that? thanks in advance.

[Bug 312591] [NEW] kdenetwork-filesharing will not start

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdenetwork

The kdenetwork-filesharing package will not start in Kubuntu 9.04. It
installs successfully and a "Samba" icon appears in System Settings, but
double-clicking it does nothing. However, it is possible to start it

[Bug 312259] Re: Screen must be started with sudo on first use

2008-12-30 Thread Connor Imes
Before running screen with sudo (so after a fresh reboot, when the error
occurs), can you please post the output of
   ls -l /var | grep run
and
   ls -l /usr/bin/screen

The first command should show the permissions of the folder /var/run as 755
(drwxr-xr-x) and owned by root:root
The last command should show screen to have permissions 755 with sgid
(rwxr-sr-x) and owned by root:utmp

If the last command doesn't show something very similar to
   -rwxr-sr-x 1 root utmp 308228 2007-10-23 12:02 /usr/bin/screen
Then run
   sudo chown root:utmp /usr/bin/screen
   sudo chmod 755 /usr/bin/screen
   sudo chmod g+s /usr/bin/screen

Since this bug didn't have a package associated with it, I am filing it under
"screen", though I expect this is a configuration problem and not a bug.
Thanks in advance for the information requested. Let me know if the problem is
solved.

[Bug 312593] [NEW] multimedia keys do not work when amarok is in background

The multimedia keys do not work in Amarok unless Amarok has system
attention. If it is in the background or minimized, only the play/pause

[Bug 312601] [NEW] 8.10 not autodetecting my sound card

2008-12-30 Thread Jeff Powell
Public bug reported:

I've installed a 64bit 8.10 (amd64 architecture) on a Dell Optiplex 330.

Things are mostly working, but I cannot get sound to work. Nothing that
should emit sound from the speakers I have plugged in will do so. (Yes,
the speakers are plugged in and turned on.)

The volume control icon has a red X next to it. Right clicking on it
and selecting open volume control gets the message:

No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found. (Actually,
there's a longer version of that message that shows up the first time
you do this after starting X, but I don't have that handy and will need
to hit submit on this first. If that message is needed I will attach it
here later. Just ask.)

Trying to track this down, I chased a number of trouble shooting pages
on the net and on your site. They all broke down and failed to help me
figure out what the problem was. The best I can do is gather the
information I was digging up in them and give it to you here.

I ran lspci -v and found the following audio device info:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: Dell Device 0220
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at dfdfc000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]

Something I read said this might be useful to someone too:

snd_page_alloc 17680 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

Additionally, when I bring up gnome-sound-properties and attempt to test
the sound listed under "Sound Playback" - as recommended by this page
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting) I get various
error messages, depending on what I select in the pulldown. Those

[Bug 312605] [NEW] logitech comford cordless keyboard/mouse not recognized

2008-12-30 Thread davidstern
Public bug reported:

I have a Logitech Comfort Cordless Desktop (keyboard with encrypted
transmission SecureConnect and with an optical laser mouse).
I tried kubuntu 8.10 and ubuntu 8.10. Both hung several times in the
installation process. After all (many trials) I got a working system installed,
the mouse sometimes froze and the keyboard was not recognized or when it was
recognized, it wasn't any more afterwards in Windows (XP, which I have on
another hard disk as a dual boot option) and I had first to re-initialize the
SecureConnect again (while booting into Windows with a second keyboard).

[Bug 149665] Re: when returning from suspend my laptop tries to hibernate

2008-12-30 Thread ethanay
I am doubtful that it is kernel-related -- I've been running 2.6.24-19
much longer than when I remember this bug appearing on my system!

But anyway, I will, test an older version and see if the problem goes
away (or is masked by other problems...heh). Is there a particular
version you want me to test?

Maybe I will try to report a bug (or several bugs) for the problems I am
experiencing with the new kernels, but I am just an end user and feel
like I am in over my head as it is, and the problems seem complicated
that it's hard to recognize and understand them all.

[Bug 307068] Re: regression: intermittent freezing

2008-12-30 Thread sideshowmel
I've seen this problem in Debian Etch and Lenny, as well as Ubuntu
Intrepid. All were running RAID1 with mdadm.

I can give more details. Once it starts, it's hard to get rid of.
Reboots, mdadm (remove, zero superblock, then add), fsck don't help.
Compatibility mode, configuring in BIOS... no change. both disk check
out.

If I change the SATA ports I can usually get rid of it, but it comes
back again within a week or two, usually after a few days of system
uptime.

[Bug 258466] Re: Unable to configure Administration menu

2008-12-30 Thread Phil M
I'm seeing this same problem in part in 8.10, and saw it in 8.04. I'm
running on x86, with alacarte version 0.11.6-0ubuntu2. I have full sudo
privs here (I'm the only user), but I'm not prompted at any point.

Here's what doesn't work:
- In the Applications menu, I cannot enable items (submenus) that are not
already enabled. I've tried to enable both Debian and Programming, and they
untick themselves after a few seconds or further interaction. They never go
from the small-italic font to the larger upright font of active items.

Everything else seems to operate just fine, though my memory is that it
was worse before I upgraded from 8.04. If there's been no action on this
front in another week or two, I'll have convenient access to an 8.04
machine on which to test further, to help track down what this comes
from.

Re: [Bug 278159] Re: Intrepid Ibex installer does not recognize partition table on SATA drives

2008-12-30 Thread zosX
I'd still try to delete that extended partition and recreate it. Sounds like
your partition table is pretty screwed to me. Rewriting it with windows or
something might help. I don't think anything will work for you without
changes to the table somehow. Unallocated space doesn't just suddenly appear
or your table became suddenly corrupt. :P You can always recreate the FAT32
partition at the end for the media you might need to make the volume label
the same, but I doubt the size matters as long as it is FAT32..have you
thought about installing ubuntu on your windows partiton and boot selected
with windows? :)

[Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]

2008-12-30 Thread Robert Bernecky
I don't particularly care about graphics performance, but definitely DO want
(1) switch-user to work properly (which, at present, crashes my system), and
(2) dual-head support to work properly.

So, I may not need the apparently useless drivers from AMD/ATI, if they are the
root
of the problem, IF I can get the above features to work properly without fglrx.

Someone claimed that someone from ATI/AMD said that "nobody uses switch-user,
so we don't have to fix it". This statement is rumor, so I don't want to beat
up on
ATI/AMD (perhaps), but let me assure you that the need to run concurrent users
with different permissions is very critical to my work. If NVIDIA can support
the above two requirements, I would switch to them in an instant, IFF
they work. My past experience with NVIDIA does not give me hope here.

\begin{rant}
If ATI/AMD would just publish their device (GPU) specifications, we could
do the open-source thing and life would be good. At present, I have NO
good suppliers of GPUs to go to. This is as bad as the mainframe world
of the 1970s, when IBM refused to publish their I/O channel specifications,
in the hope of keeping their monopoly. Perhaps someone should sue
ATI/AMD and NVIDIA to get them to publish their interface specifications.
\end{rant}

BTW, these problems, from what I've seen, may not be specific to ATI/AMD or
NVIDIA, because it seems to appear with both GPUs. If so, my apologies to
the appropriate vendor(s). If not, will you people please get off your
butt and fix things?

Thanks. Your Unsatisfied Linux Customer.

[Bug 276445] Re: Madwifi (atheros) driver malfunction induces a system freeze

cheers everybody.. i have good news...

after setting up everything with the new modem, i haven't had a kernel
panic the whole day (some serious traffic has been going on like p2p
more than 500 kBs, media streaming etc).. i sure hope it's not just
luck..

i did 2 things..

1) changed my wireless router to "802.11b only" instead of "b and g"...
i 'm not sure that this is what made it work 'cause i think i had
already tried that before.. strange thing though: iwconfig gives me

ath0 IEEE 802.11g

but in case you cant' do that,
2) the second thing i tried is enabling the ath9k driver module.. apparently in
8.10 it's already in there (at least that's what i think) so just do

sudo modprobe ath9k

and then

lsmod |grep ath

and check it's enabled.. notice that you'll have to do that again if you
restart, but if it actually works you can just add it as a startup
command in  system->preferences->sessions

i'd love to hear that it worked for you too

[Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]

2008-12-30 Thread flaccid
@Robert Bernecky

1, Complaining to AMD/ATI tends to do nothing but frustrate people due to the
lack of any response on their part
2. ATI *did* release open specification for its video driver, or at least the
parts they could or would due to licensing and other IP gripes. I guess it
enabled better development of the open-source Xorg driver, but has only
relinquished their responsibility with fglrx.
3. fglrx does not support XrandR so dual head needs to be done via Xinerama or
similar eg. http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/X.Org/Dual_Monitors/ATI
4. switch user and dual display should work Ok under the open-source "ati" or
"radeon" driver.
5. In this case you can't blame Linux, but you can blame AMD for lack of
support and maintainence of the driver and Ubuntu for its lack of action - Its
still not proven which one is exactly at fault and why; but it do looks like
the ATI driver is doing something non-standard

Unfortunately none of this gets us closer to fixing this bug.

[Bug 278159] Re: Intrepid Ibex installer does not recognize partition table on SATA drives

2008-12-30 Thread BrianS
If you could tell me how to delete it, I would be more than willing to.
The only thing on the hard drive that I do not want to lose is the
recovery partition. As for the others, I have nothing on them that I
want to keep that badly, and the recovery makes it easy for reinstalling
windows. If you are talking about wubi, I would rather just not deal
with windows except for when I need it for using visual studio for
school assignments.

2008-12-30 Thread alejaaandro
sorry guys, bad news... it was probably wrong getting too excited and
posting without testing it longer..

i changed my router back to "b and g" to check if that was what fixed it and 10
min later i got a panic..
so that leaves me with either luck or the 801.11g being the problem.. i ll
report back after some time so i can be sure next time..

i didn't seem to find any log messages concerning the problem...

[Bug 279287] Re: [intrepid] Kernel panic with acx driver

2008-12-30 Thread carlivar
To answer comment 15, there is a dev/beta version of the acx 100/111
project with WPA support.

Info is here:

http://acx100.sourceforge.net/wiki/Mac80211

Note that some versions of opensuse have packages for this:

http://software.opensuse.org/search?baseproject=openSUSE%3A10.3&p=1&q
=acx-mac80211

I think the proper Ubuntu fix should be to switch to the mac80211 branch
of the acx100/111 driver project. This has WPA support.

I'll post this on bug 277868, which is essentially the same (they should
probably be duped/merged).

I also confirm this locks up the Intrepid Final LiveCD. Not pretty for
new users. I finally figured out I could get it to boot by removing the
wireless card.

There is a dev/beta version of the acx 100/111 project with WPA support.

Info is here:

2008-12-30 Thread zosX
Yeah I meant Wubi. Try deleting them in windows since it sees all the
partitions and can probably manipulate them without issue. I'm guessing that
it was a windows install on that disk anyways to begin with. I've never seen
a partition table that cfdisk couldn't mangle back together so all I can
wish you really is luck. Hope you have a big external you can make images to
just in case. =)

Ohpartition magic may be able to straighten that out too. Don't know if
the DOS version will see your drive but the windows install should be able
