 That's also exactly how I'd describe the idea of allowing all users to set
 timezone without authentication on laptops. :-p

Well, then the easy answer is to do neither.

 Anyway, it's not the place to discuss the choice of automated timezone
 detection: go to the gnome-control-center list if you really to want to
 argue this.

No thanks. People love to add features. You can't stop someone who
has a pet idea that they haven't
thought through very carefully.They just produce self-justifying
reasons and don't listen.

Me, I'll just turn it off when it appears.Then in 5 years, either it
will become useful,
or the distros will cause it to default to off.

[Bug 525154] Re: mountall for /var races with rpc.statd

2011-01-05 Thread Clint Byrum
Alright I've pushed up branches for nfs-utils and portmap that address
this issue in natty. The open merge proposal for nfs-utils is dependent
on the portmap package due to the new portmap-wait and portmap-boot
upstart jobs.

I've tested this on a clean natty vm with and without sleeps inserted
for fsck, portmap start, and statd start, and it all seems to work no
matter the race.

Note that I was able to get around looping and polling for upstart jobs
to start with the technique used in portmap-wait and statd-mounting.
This seems to be a reliable way to allow waiting on a job that one did
not trigger the start/stop for, and may be a good candidate for an
upstart feature request.

Neither intel_idle.max_cstate=0 or nolapic_timer offer permanent fixes. Having
tried both workarounds, sometimes the Samsung NB30 resumes from power saving,
but other times it will not resume. Then the networking gets disabled and
requires manual fixing:

Will someone PLEASE fix this power saving bug and offer the fix to every

[Bug 697854] [NEW] Ambiance/Radiance should use chromium specific theming controls

2011-01-05 Thread Elliot Glaysher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: light-themes

(Context: I'm the author of the Google Chrome GTK+ integration code.)
(Related fixed xubuntu bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/xubuntu-artwork/+bug/686239)

The current interaction between Ambiance and both Chrome 8 and 9 results
in a bright orange frame. There appear to be some changes in Ambiance
between Lucid and Maverick (our previous autoselected gray wasn't
optimal, but wasn't so...bright).

Since (at least as an outsider looking in) CSD doesn't appear like it's
going to occur, we've added some explicit nobs for GTK+ authors to
fiddle with to force the non-GTK+ parts of the Chrome interface. The new
theming controls for Chrome 9 and forward are documented at:
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/wiki/LinuxGtkThemeIntegration

This is obviously a low priority, but it'd be a nice to have before
Natty is shipped.

Here is an example for Ambiance based on me naively picking colors from
screenshots taken with the gimp. Your art team will probably be
displeased with it and want to fine tune it. These individual style
properties are documented in the link above. It is only meant as an
example of what can be done. To try this out, please install either
Google Chrome/Chromium 9.0.597 or newer:

style chrome-gtk-frame
{
ChromeGtkFrame::frame-color = @fg_color
ChromeGtkFrame::inactive-frame-color = lighter(@fg_color)

ChromeGtkFrame::frame-gradient-size = 16
ChromeGtkFrame::frame-gradient-color = #5c5b56

ChromeGtkFrame::scrollbar-trough-color = @bg_color
ChromeGtkFrame::scrollbar-slider-prelight-color = #F8F6F2
ChromeGtkFrame::scrollbar-slider-normal-color = #E7E0D3
}

class ChromeGtkFrame style chrome-gtk-frame

Re: [Bug 694528] Re: [gnome3]winff causes crash of gnome-shell

2011-01-05 Thread Paul Gevers
 Yes, I can reproduce it.

That is good. So now I guess I need to create GNOME3 environment to
test... Or can somebody else test this as well?

 I've found that ffmpeg is running at 100% of cpu, when shell crash,
and winff don't crash, go on in his work.

Of course ffmpeg is running high. Converting videos is an intensive
task.

 The messages in the shell terminal:
 Avviso del window manager: Log level 16: STACK_OP_ADD: window 0x1200012
 already in stack
 Avviso del window manager: Log level 16: STACK_OP_ADD: window 0x1200012

 Avviso del window manager: Specificato un WM_TRANSIENT_FOR finestra 0x128
 non valido per 0x1200544 (Correzione).
 Avviso del window manager: Buggy client sent a _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW message
 with a timestamp of 0 for 0x2400075 (WinFF)
 Avviso del window manager: meta_window_activate called by a pager with a 0
 timestamp; the pager needs to be fixed.
 Avviso del window manager: Log level 16: invalid unclassed pointer in cast to
 `GObject'
 Avviso del window manager: Log level 8: g_object_get_data: assertion
 `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
 Shell killed with signal 11

I am not exactly sure how, but could you try to make sure the messages
are in English next time? See also:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingNonEnglishErrors

I think Avviso means warning? Than that should NOT be the cause of the
crash.

 When possible i will try on another machine to see if reproducible
there too.

Did this yield any information?

I still believe this bug should be reported to gnome3 instead of winff,
are you convinced it is winff's fault?

Re: [Bug 696909] Re: CGALBoolean plugin missing-for Boolean Operations

2011-01-05 Thread senartcon
Hello Maneul,

Thanks for your quick attention.
However since i dont have much background in Ubuntu I would like you to
clarify as what does it mean to add those -dev packages to build-depends in
control file ?
I found that using Ubuntu Software centre I could install those -dev
packages; but would that suffice?

And yes Boolean operations are very important for Computer Aided Design
operations. It allows one of add, subtract, merge etc of one object with the
other. Although K-3D is an animation s/w and animators can get going without
them, people who want to work with CAD and looking for free s/w like K-3D,
it is very important.

Thanks for your time.

Cheers
Anand

 You can get that module enabled by adding the following to build-depends in
 the control file:
  libcgal-dev (= 3.6), libmpfr-dev (= 3.0), libgmp3-dev

 In Debian repositories that would render the package to depend on non-
 free libraries (CGAL) and would require significant changes, that's why
 this is not enable.

 Is this CGALBoolean module very important? If so, I can try to work out
 some solution, enabling a separate package containing modules depending
 on non-free libarries.

 Are the any other missing features? I'm looking forward to feedback
 from real users of the package.

 A very fundamental CAD operation namely the Boolean operations are perfomed
 by the CGALBoolean plugin.
 Unfortunately this is missing in k3d 0.8.0.2-2 of Ubuntu distro (Maverick),
 although in windows this plugin is included.
  Kindly add this and rebuild k3d. Thank you.

2011-01-05 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Ok, no aufs kernel tracebacks (ie bug #621195) and the guests are flaky.
What is triggering it is a maverick dist-upgrade in one guest, and an
'apt-get install ubuntu-desktop' in another maverick guest, that only
has ubuntu-minimal installed. I will try disabling ksm.

[Bug 685474] Re: Please update wine1.2 packages to latest stable version 1.2.2 (released on 2010-12)

2011-01-05 Thread Scott Ritchie
Tested on maverick, works just fine launching winecfg, Steam and a few
steam apps.

I uploaded a lucid-proposed one, with 2 minor changes to control file:
1) use lucid's libstdc++ version (same as lucid packages)
2) Recommend the newly used ttf-unfonts-core and ttf-droid packages (somehow
slipped from the maverick/natty packages). I just made a natty upload to fix
this, I'll do another maverick -proposed soon as well. Then we should be good
to go.
