[Bug 615773] Re: flash-kernel fails to handle raw boot partitons on eMMC

2011-04-27 Thread Oliver Grawert
this is a whishlist item for a feature non of the ubuntu images provides yet,
there is no need to release note it.
for oneiric we have a spec to discuss building images with raw partitions
instead of (or additionally to) vfat, if this gets implemented, flash-kernel
will get support for such kind of images. before we have general support for
raw boot partitions, we will neither need to milestone nor release note this
whishlist item.

[Bug 771824] [NEW] pointer speed/acceleration should be device specific, not generic

2011-04-27 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Different types of pointing devices behave differently, and so settings
like acceleration and movement speed should be set by device rather than
generically tied to pointer.

For example, I'm using a ThinkPad x201. This has the IBM trackpoint
(the red joystick nub in the keyboard), a touchpad and I am using a
bluetooth Apple Magic Mouse.

When I'm not using the bluetooth mouse, I typically use a combination of
the pointer and the touchpad (for example, when working on a plane, or
in a restaurant). These devices typically need a faster acceleration
set to make pointer movements more efficient. So I set the acceleration
higher to account for the much smaller surface area of the touchpad and
the limited movement of the trackpoint.

BUT, as soon as I connect my Magic Mouse, it takes on the same
acceleration settings as I had set for the other devices, and becomes
all but unusable because it's far faster by default when moving the
pointer.

So, the means that I, the user, must set the mouse properties manually
every time I use one or the other. So when I don't have my bluetooth
mouse connected, I have to set the acceleration up to compensate for the
slow trackpoint/touchpad devices. when I do connect the mouse, I have
to manually slow down the acceleration to make the mouse behave
properly.

Expected results:
I should be able to set a profile for each pointing device with settings set
accordingly. So I can set one set of parameters for the built-in devices and
one set for my bluetooth mouse, and perhaps a third profile for a different USB
mouse.

Or at the very least, generic parameters set for decice TYPE. So built-
in devices get one profile and config while external devices get
another.

[Bug 771698] Re: /usr/bin/id does not show ldap groups

2011-04-27 Thread Jamie Strandboge
I am unmarking this as a security issue. If a user is a part of a group
that is listed in getent, the user is supposed to be in that group and
any DAC checks should be checking for that. The fact that id shows fewer
groups is not a security issue-- the user should have fewer privileges
than with the intended ldap groups.

Also, for a developer to help with this, please attach your pam
configuration and nsswitch.conf as a start.

[Bug 771511] Re: some apps show grey overlay instead orange even if the window is focused

2011-04-27 Thread Andrea Cimitan
Description: the internal overlays could be grey even if the window is
focused. This is negatively affecting the usability, as users might not
immediately see there's a scrollbar on the application.

to test the regression: open apps like lshw-gtk, evolution, deja-dup...
and check if the pager are always orange when the window is focused (and
the mouse is outside the scrolled window)

[Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

2011-04-27 Thread John Cottier
I have a GeForce 7300 LE and have exactly the same issue. I also get
random black and white blocks and garbled characters during boot up. I
tried the nvidia-173 driver, but this was worse for me. With the 173
driver I get the same black and white garbled stuff on the login screen
too. Also, a restart does not help. It remains garbled and black and
white until the PC is cold booted (powered off for a few seconds), so it
seems to mess up the card so bad it cannot even hard reset!

[Bug 771563] Re: anjuta doesn't display scrollbar after resetting the layout

2011-04-27 Thread Andrea Cimitan
Description: in anjuta (and possibly other apps) the internal
overlays/pager could disappear. it is reproducible by going in the menu
and choosing View-Reset Dock Layot. Overlays will disappear and can't
be readded. This is making the experience totally unusable in these apps

To test the regression: in anjuta's menubar, choose View-Reset Dock
Layot and check if the scrollbars are still on the screen. See also if
scrollbars are always correctly displayed in other apps

[Bug 768662] Re: One big file keeps starting to upload every time I log in

2011-04-27 Thread elPraga
Hello,
thanks for the answer. This thing is really annoying. It eats almost all my
internet conection for a good while every time I log in. Here is the output:

tomas@Ubuntu-Natty:~$ sha1sum '/home/tomas/Libros/Calibre/Paul
Ekman/Unmasking the face (7)/Unmasking the face - Paul Ekman.pdf'
7ddc407be1db3aab806b2f3a0706017f9b44b1d6 /home/tomas/Libros/Calibre/Paul
Ekman/Unmasking the face (7)/Unmasking the face - Paul Ekman.pdf
tomas@Ubuntu-Natty:~$

Please note, that before I had the same problem with the other file I
mentioned earlier. It also kept uploading itself every time I logged in,
only was much smaller. When the big .pdf file started to behave like this,
the previous one stopped bothering me..

Thanks for help.

2011/4/27 duanedesign 768...@bugs.launchpad.net

 elPraga,
Thank you for getting back to us so quickly with the logs. We noticed
something strange with one of the files. Could you please run the following
command in a Terminal and post the output. That would help us a lot. Thank
 you.

  sha1sum '/home/tomas/Libros/Calibre/Paul Ekman/Unmasking the face

Sorry, previous state files for omap4 should all be incorrect because

[Bug 705562] Re: ami-6836dc01 8.04 32 bit AMI kernel lock bug

2011-04-27 Thread Joey Imbasciano
One other thing that I just thought of is that I am able to reproduce
the bug more quickly when load is applied to the server. When I am
running an idle server in development I noticed it took substantially
longer to surface the bug. When I launch one in production and more load
is applied to it, it seems to happen within an hour.

[Bug 771836] [NEW] how to close the dash can be confusing to users

2011-04-27 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

That's using unity in natty, I've noticed while watching users than it's not
obvious how to close the dash, simple testcase:
- open the dash
- type a word which has not result in the search entry
- watch the screen on a clue on what to do next

there is no visual clue on how to close the dash but the search entry
clear emblem on the left looks like a close tab button and can easily
be confusing, shouldn't the icon rather be a cleansweep emblem similar
to the one used in other softwares?

[Bug 769922] Re: Impossible to distinguish between applications with the same name

2011-04-27 Thread levu
I can think of this solution: If there are desktop files which have the
same name and they are both shown at the same time, append the category:

Desktop Webmail (Preferences) / Desktop Webmail (Internet)

If there's only one program with this name shown, there is no need for
this.

The better solution would be to have unique names for all programs :)

[Bug 732677] Re: bcmwl 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu2 not work on BCM4311

2011-04-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The bcmwl-kernel-source package should have installed a very similar
workaround as above when it installed. If your /etc/modprobe.d
/blacklist-bcm43.conf is missing something like this at the end:

blacklist b44
install wl modprobe -r b43 b44 b43legacy ssb; modprobe --ignore-install wl;
modprobe --ignore-install b44

Then you should add it to the end of the file.

I know the blacklist file is meant to be removed when the package is removed,
but I recently noticed it's not actually removed/upgraded correctly when
bcmwl-kernel-source is upgraded. So if you've;
  * had some version of that package installed since before 2009-06-19; or
  * if you for some reason didn't have b44 loaded when the package was being
installed; or
  * if you had a lingering blacklist-bcm43.conf for any reason before the
package was installed;
then you will be missing the above workaround Alberto introduced in 2009.

Hope it works for you...

[Bug 771837] [NEW] xorg died (gracefully to login) but without ado

2011-04-27 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I was using it normally (firefox, chrome, banshee, and also reading a
PDF) when suddenly the X turned off, back to a textual background (as I
would expected if I have pressed Ctrl+Alt+Bckspc, but I have not) and
shortly after I was presented with the login screen again (gdm?) ... it
has happened at least five time the last two weeks, but I was not sure
if it was related with other issues I was also facing during the beta
testing, but now I am sure it had nothing to do with anything else I was
doing. The system is fully up to date (checked just after the issue, to
be sure). I do not had a real step-by-step to reproduce the problem, as
it seems to happen kind of out of the blue. Sice the first few times I
have experience this issue I have installed a current kernel (not from
apt-get) to try to solve something else (it did not seemed to have any
influence on the current problem, as it happened before and after the
upgrade anyway). I also suspect it might have something to do with intel
drivers in xorg, but I am not skilled in x enough to even try this
theory.

[Bug 723871] Re: qemu-kvm-0.14.0 Aborts with -vga qxl

2011-04-27 Thread Boris Derzhavets
@Serg,

I started getting execution denied errors in VirtManager or same in terminal
after
virsh start W7 , when updated XML as follows

emulator/usr/bin/kvm-spice/emulatror
. . . . .

graphics type='spice' port='5930' autoport='no' listen='0.0.0.0'/
video
model type='qxl' vram='32768' heads='1'/
address type='pci' domain='0x' bus='0x00' slot='0x02' function='0x0'/
/video

When i attempted to fool libvirt and replace symlink kvm-spice or binary it's
referencing
i got another execution denied error when spice-server started.
Fedora's libvirt doesn't have any problems of such kind ( even F14's libvirt in
the very early times )

Install libvirt-0.8.8-4.fc15.src.rpm shows following patches in SOURCES
:-

libvirt-0.8.8-avoid-resetting-errors.patch
libvirt-0.8.8-read-only-checks.patch
libvirt-0.8.8-kernel-boot-index.patch
libvirt-0.8.8-threadsafe-libvirtd-error-reporting.patch

It's hard to understand what part of code ( in patches ) is responsible for
spice-server
behaviour. Once again RH's support is pretty much desired.

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver

2011-04-27 Thread John Cottier
I cannot even get the nvidia drivers to work on 11.04. But have tried
the v86d fix. It is functional, but the largest mode I am allowed is
1280 x 1024 (on a 1680 x 1050 monitor). The result is a logo thats
still a bit fuzzy, and the background is sort of chequered stripes, with
a gap for the Ubuntu logo. So it works but its still a bit grotty, but
at least I don't have to look away anymore.

Natty will ship with 0.9.2, but bugfix release 0.9.3 is now available.
It would be nice to include it too. Here are the changes:

  * Resolves issue where setting the desktop background didn't work in Gnome3
  * Mimics are now deleted when a RAW photo is removed
  * Event dates are now only shown once in the Event view
  * Fixes a number of translation issues

[Bug 771840] [NEW] Software Center resize glitch with Unity

2011-04-27 Thread Zygmunt Krynicki
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

I stumbled upon this bug after upgrading my W510 (early 2011 model) from
Maverick to Natty.

The bug is hard to describe, when you attempt to resize ubuntu software
center window by pressing and holding the left mouse button over the
bottom-right resize trigger the resize overlay (transparent
representation of the new window size) is sometimes largely inaccurate,
as if the resize trigger happened 30-50 pixels away from the point of
click.

At times I managed to reproduce this bug in a configuration where
software center window was very small in the top-left corner of the
screen and the resize attempt immediately moved the overlay (not the
pointer) all the way to the bottom right of the screen (but not 100%
full screen, just a lot).

A video is attached to illustrate the issue. Please pay attention in the
second half of the video, you can hear my mouse clicks to know when I
press and release the left mouse button.

[Bug 770663] Re: New keyring password keeps being reset

2011-04-27 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Thank you for using Ubuntu and filing a bug. While I appreciate the care
taken to explain the problem, some parts of the process to reproduce the
bug are not specific enough (eg after entering the new password, the
prompt kept coming up. But as in the bug described, there seemed no harm
in canceling the other prompts, so I did). Can you provide a reduced
test case with specific steps that clearly indicate what you are seeing
and what actions you took? Thanks

[Bug 770324] Re: DNS resolvers are not requested/learned from DHCPv6

2011-04-27 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
There may be some differences brought from the version difference.
Ubuntu Natty is still at isc-dhcp 4.1.1-P1-15ubuntu9; which is only
slightly below the version from Debian: 4.1.1-P1-16.1. The latest
upstream release appears to be DHCP 4.2.1-P1.

We can update the packaging in Oneiric (or wait/ask for the Debian
maintainers to update it), which will likely get the same behavior as
4.2.0 in Fedora. I haven't seen any of these details in release notes,
but it's likely just been omitted.

For now I'll reassign this to the 'isc-dhcp' package since there doesn't
appear to be any issue with NetworkManager, just unexpected defaults for
the DHCP client and server.

[Bug 768519] Re: There is no access to About Ubuntu Window from Unity

2011-04-27 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
If you're redesigning how to convey which Ubuntu version someone is
using, then this is a duplicate of bug 688008.

If you aren't, then it's already specified: Help About This
Computer is supposed to open System Monitor to its first tab, which
shows the Ubuntu version. Access to the You are using Ubuntu 11.04
help page is not an end in itself, it's just another way of presenting
the Ubuntu version. System Monitor is far from the ideal presentation,
but it's much better than the help page is.

[Bug 753971] Re: Display garbled upon restoring original resolution or connecting external displays

2011-04-27 Thread Daniel Manrique
Hi all,

Apologies for the delay testing this.

First, without upgrading, I reproduced the bug by changing resolution
to 800x600, waiting 5 seconds, and switching back up to 1366x768. With
the OLD version of Unity, the bug still occurs as reported.

Then I used the ppa to upgrade unity and libnux to these versions:

ii libnux-0.9-0 0.9.48-0ubuntu1~ppa1
ii libnux-0.9-common0.9.48-0ubuntu1~ppa1
ii unity3.8.12-0ubuntu1~ppa1

I used the same procedure to try and reproduce the bug on four upgraded
systems (Dell Inspiron 1545, Toshiba Tecra R700, HP ProBook 6550b and
Sony Vaio VGN-Z540).

On all the systems, the desktop and application windows restore
correctly when coming to the original 1366x768 resolution. The only
issue I could observe was that the top panel/menu bar doesn't restore;
it's transparent, I can see a horizontal line delimiting its position
but the background is visible where the panel should be.

The panel is very easy to restore; basically moving any window, moving
the pointer to where the panel should be, or even pressing certain keys
(such as PrtScrn when I tried to get a screenshot) restores the panel.

I'm attaching a picture of the invisible panel so you can see what I
mean.

Thanks so much to everyone involved for the work you've done on this
problem!

[Bug 759545] Re: user prompted to update unmodified grub configuration during Ubuntu server upgrade

2011-04-27 Thread Colin Watson
Release-noted:

 * In some cases (particularly if different kernel parameters from the
default are in use), upgrades from Ubuntu 10.10 may prompt to resolve
conflicts in the `/etc/default/grub` configuration file even when it has
not been manually changed. Performing a three-way merge should normally
be sufficient if presented with this prompt, although you should check
afterwards to ensure that `/etc/default/grub` still looks correct.

Under Linux you cannot scroll the aforementioned URL - scrolling is
extremely jerky while Firefox consumes 100% of CPU.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Visit the given URL.
Actual Results:
Terribly slow and jerky scrolling.

Expected Results:
Smooth scrolling.

This problem exists both in Firefox 3.6.13 and 4.0beta10 with clean

I can confirm this bug, with my 8600m GT Nvidia proprietary driver
version 260.xx - 270.xx, Firefox 3.6 - 4.0, Ubuntu 10.10, although for
me it is much more obvious on this URL: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
mozilla-daily/+archive/ppa

I can also confirm that changing the zoom level to a non default one
makes it much better or even go away completely.

I can confirm this problem as well, on a NVIDIA 8800GT using the 260 and
270 drivers at least, but it has existed prior to them as well, as far
as I know.

However the nouveau driver seems to handle the page just fine. Could it
not be a driver problem after all?

Can you please test problem having the latest nvidia official drivers

[Bug 771661] Re: Allow .xsession-errors to be a symlink

2011-04-27 Thread Martin Pitt
Customer request to also backport the fix to 10.04 LTS.

** Also affects: gdm (Ubuntu Lucid)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu Lucid)
   Status: New = In Progress

** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu Lucid)
Assignee: (unassigned) = Martin Pitt (pitti)

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gdm

Bug 60448 discusses the problem about ~/.xsession-errors growing
unbearably large when there are buggy programs spamming it. One remedy
  is to allow ~/.xsession-errors to be a symlink to e. g. /dev/null or a
local file, so that you can at least avoid network contention if ~ is on
  NFS.

- scm sent a first patch for this (https://launchpadlibrarian.net/70203386
- /gdm-session-worker.c.diff). This should be cleaned up to use
- g_file_test() and reported upstream.
+ scm sent a first patch for this
(https://launchpadlibrarian.net/70203386/gdm-session-worker.c.diff). This
should be cleaned up to use g_file_test() and reported upstream.
+
+ SRU TEST CASE:
+ * Remove ~/.xsession-errors and ~/.xsession-errors.old
+ * ln -s /tmp/xe ~/.xsession-errors
+ * Reboot and log back in.
+- Current behavior: the ~/.xsession-errors symlink gets rotated to
~/.xsession-errors.old, and a new ~/.xsession-errors is created as a regular
file.
+- Desired behaviour: ~/.xsession-errors remains a symlink, and the target
file /tmp/xe is truncated for the new session.
