[Bug 1034164] Re: [SRU Regression] Unity 5.14 + Nux 2.14: Launcher tooltips are incomplete/missing

2012-09-11 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
** Description changed:

+ [Test Case]
+ 1. Start a unity session (unity --replace works too)
+ 2. Mouse-hover any icon in the launcher
+- Verify that the tooltip appears
+ 3. Move the mouse on another icon and then get back to the first icon.
+- Verify that the tooltip appears
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Visual regressions, shell drawing problems. Part of a big change, many
regression potentials.
+
+ Original description:
+
Since the last proposed Unity/Compiz/Nux update, launcher tooltips don't
appear immediately after starting the session.

  Test case:

  - Start a unity session (unity --replace works too)
  - Mouse-hover any icon in the launcher and notice that there is no tooltip
  - Move the mouse on another icon and then get back to the first icon. Now the
tooltip appears immediately.

Same problem with FGLRX (from Ubuntu repositories) and with an updated
  Mesa stack (from https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/graphics-drivers/
  ).

[Bug 1048575] Re: remounting a samba share as read-only mounts it twice

2012-09-11 Thread Sebastian Stickel
** Description changed:

When I remount a mounted samba share as read-only, it gets mounted a second
time, according to /etc/mtab
Thought the mount point is only read-only accessible from now on, it is still
listed as rw AND ro.

- - Problem exists on two different machines running an upgraded 12.04
- - Tested with to different smb shares coming from two different machines
(WinServer and Debian)
+ - Problem exists on two different machines running an upgraded 12.04
+ - Tested with two different smb shares coming from two different machines
(WinServer and Debian)
  - This doesn't affect loop mounts. (Tested with a mkfs.ext4 formatted and
mounted file)

  Ubuntu Version:
  root / # lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
  Release: 12.04
  root / # uname -a
  Linux MACHINE 3.2.0-30-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 24 16:52:48 UTC 2012
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

  What I expected to happen:
The mount point should be listed only once in /etc/mtab
- When umounting it, it should completely disappear from /etc/mtab on the first
try.
+ When umounting it, it should completely disappear from /etc/mtab on the first
try.

  What happened instead:
The mount point appears a second time in /etc/mtab
When I umount it still appears in mtab as mounted rw but is no longer
accessible
When I then try to umount again I get an error that it is not mounted any
longer, which also makes the entry in mtab disappear.

  Steps to reproduce
1.) Get 12.04 and update it.
2.) mount any samba share via mount -t cifs... or smbmount or mount -t
smbfs...
  3.) remount it with mount -o remount -r /path/to/mountpoint
  4.) cat /etc/mtab
5.) try to write to /path/to/mountpoint (which should not be possible)
  6.) umount /path/to/mountpoint
  7.) cat /etc/mtab
8.) try to access /path/to/mountpoint again (which was not possible to me)
9.) umount again (which should threw an error at me)
  10.) cat /etc/mtab a last time

If any more information is needed just tell me.

+1 from Docs.

The good screenshot has too much whitespace padding below the Continue
button.

And I can't figure out what the first symbolic icon on the left of the
header is supposed to represent.

[Bug 1049123] [NEW] sssd fails to resolve names properly; replacing 'id_provider' by 'domain_type' in sssd.conf fixes it, but this is documented nowhere

2012-09-11 Thread Thomas Hood
Public bug reported:

After upgrading sssd from the 12.04 to the quantal version,
1.9.0~beta6-0ubuntu1, sssd no longer works properly.

0. In sssd.conf I have two domains configured, named 'LOCAL' and 'SAMBA'
where the latter uses a Samba 4 beta2 AD LDAP server.

1. While getent passwd lists all expected users from passwd and LDAP,
getent passwd username produces no output and id username results
in id: username: No such user, etc.

2. Running sssd interactively (sssd -i -d 0x) and trying id foo
for user foo in the LDAP directory produces some interesting debugging
output.

=== BEGIN ===
(Tue Sep 11 15:20:10 2012) [sssd[nss]] [sss_parse_name_for_domains] (0x0200):
name 'foo' matched without domain, user is foo
(Tue Sep 11 15:20:10 2012) [sssd[nss]] [nss_cmd_getpwnam] (0x0100): Requesting
info for [foo] from [ALL]

request for [0x42e390:domains@LOCAL]

(Tue Sep 11 15:20:10 2012) [sssd[nss]] [sss_dp_internal_get_send] (0x0020):

15:20:10 2012) [sssd[nss]] [sss_dp_issue_request] (0x0020): The request has
disappeared?
=== END ===

3. getent passwd username@LDAP *does* produce output (where
username is in the LDAP directory).

4. sssd works properly again if, in the [domain/LOCAL] section of
sssd.conf the line

id_provider = local

is replaced by the line

domain_type = local

Then the debugging output looks like the following

=== BEGIN ===
(Tue Sep 11 15:31:39 2012) [sssd[nss]] [sss_parse_name_for_domains] (0x0200):

The need to replace 'id_provider' by 'domain_type' is not documented
anywhere I've seen.

2012-09-11 Thread Alberto Mardegan
Hi Adam, and sorry for the late reply. I didn't explain the issue properly, so
I'll try again. :-)
The current situation is:

1) The user chooses a picture and chooses the Publish option from the menu
2) A dialog appears, showing a combobox with the available services, and a
login button
3) (optional) The user chooses the desired service, if different from the
already selected one
4) The user clicks on the login button
5) (if the OAuth token has expired) A modal dialog (created in the signon-ui
process) pops up, embedding the website login page for OAuth
6) Account informations are retrieved
7) The publishing dialog is ready: the user can change some options, if
desired, and start the upload.

Now, point 6 takes some time to execute, and point 5 is even heavier, because
besides taking some time, it requires user interaction.
If we remove the login step, and attempt to login automatically, points 5 and 6
will be executed automatically as the user starts publishing, and whenever he
changes the publishing service. Now, suppose that the pre-selected service is
not what the user wants. There's the risk that the OAuth dialog from step 5
would appear, prompting the user to login to a service which he doesn't want to
use. Sure, the user can cancel it and continue selecting another service, but
it seems better to me to avoid starting logging in to a service which the user
might not want to use.

[Bug 1049065] Re: Can't compile kernel modules for virtualbox

2012-09-11 Thread Hadmut Danisch
dkms remove vboxguest/3.2.10 --all

didn't help, but your hint was pretty good. I had to remove all
virtualbox packages and then delete things from /usr/src and
/var/lib/dkms, then reinstall, to get it working.

No idea where this stuff came from, since there was no package claiming
ownership, and there has never been software on this machine except
through debian-packages. So I don't know where this old stuff came from.
I also wonder why the machine was working well just some days ago, but
failed after recent update.

Problem solved, thanks for your support and help.

[Bug 1049133] [NEW] brasero process hangs if launched selecting it from contextual menu on .iso file

2012-09-11 Thread marco.pallotta
Public bug reported:

If you want to burn an iso it is simple to do it launching brasero from
contextual menu opened doing right click of the mouse just on .iso file. The
problem is that at the end of the burning processo it seems that you cannot
open brasero anymore.
The real fact is that with the above steps brasero parent process is init
(number 1) and at the end of burning it hangs. Next time you try to launch
brasero a process is already running so nothing is launched.
You can simply try it with these simple step:
- create an .iso
- right click on it and select open with brasero
- type a ps on a terminal (you will find parent process of brasero is init)
- press cancel button
- if you type agains a ps the process is always running
- launch brasero from command line: you will see * (brasero:16807): WARNING
**: An instance of Brasero is already running, exiting

Tested with brasero 3.4.1 on Ubuntu 12.04 (x86_64).

[Bug 1009312] Re: GPU loads unreliably, possible kernel timeout

2012-09-11 Thread Kyle Auble
Arrrgh, spoke too soon. After several reboots that went fine, I just
booted up the computer, the splash screen failed to show, and I'm now in
Unity 2D without my GPU. I'm really out of ideas as to what could be
going on.

I diffed the dmesg logs again, and after the times have been stripped,
the only difference before the video device fails to boot is that the
chip is detected as being at slightly different frequencies (fraction of
a MHz) and the boot time is obviously different.

[Bug 988079] Re: Much slower OpenGL frame rates with unityshell loaded, than plain compiz

2012-09-11 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
** Description changed:

+ [Test Case]
+ Performance issue - just checking if performance in OpenGL applications with
Unity loaded are normal.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Visual regressions, shell drawing problems. Part of a big change, many
regression potentials.
+
+ Original description:
+
The main problem is that OpenGL apps run slower with unityshell compared
  to plain compiz (Gnome Classic).

In extreme cases, running glmark2 under Unity only achieves 0-3 FPS. Yet
on the same machine reports frame rates of several hundred FPS in Gnome
  Classic. See comments #28-#30.

In other cases, game performance is OK but still visibly worse under
Unity. ioquake3 drops in frame rate by around 20% in Unity compared to
plain Compiz in Gnome Classic (see duplicate bug 1005074).

  ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
On my Z600, with a fresh Precise installation, after installing the NVIDIA
driver 295.40 (same version as in gPrecise), glxgears runs extremely slowly
full-screen. When running on Precise, Chrome's GPU accelerated rendering path
produces correct results, albeit extremely slowly.

[Bug 1049144] [NEW] Fix Brasero user experience

2012-09-11 Thread Dario Ruellan
Public bug reported:

My first experience using Brasero to burn a DVD is awful, and since it
is the default tool shipped with Ubuntu, should be revised by the QA
team.

What I want:
Burn a mp4 movie transcoded as DVD.

What I get:
Obscure dialog messages, packages needed to be installed via the terminal, and
tons of error messages.

Chronicle:
From Brasero I selected the Video Project, dragging a mp4 file to the
Window. Brasero recognized the file just fine, and I pushed the Burn button.
First message I received was Installing packages by files isn't supported.
Closing that, I get another dialog with some instructions: Please install the
following manually and try again: mplex (GStreamer plugin), dvdauthor.
Just for testing, I searched for this packages on the Ubuntu Software Center.
None found.
Then I searched for Brasero, opening the more info, taking a look at the
Add-ons section. None.
Time for some Terminal work. sudo apt-get install dvdauthor was easy, but I
could not find mplex. Since the message says it is a GStreamer plugin, I
searched on Google and found that the plugin is part of the
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse, so I installed that.
Closing Brasero, opening it again, now it ask for vcdimager, but odd enough, it
autoinstalls the package.
First try, Brasero stopped just before burning anything with a log message:
Checking session consistency (brasero_burn_check_session_consistency
brasero-burn.c:1739) - Session error : An internal error occurred
(brasero_burn_record brasero-burn.c:2856)
Second try, Brasero starts to transcode, and then burn the DVD, but it stop
with another log message: 27 - Some files may be corrupted on the disc.

I ended installing Bombono, that worked just fine on the first try.

My thoughts:
Bugs aside, the experience is not good. Even an advanced user could have
problems trying to install the dependencies. If the userflow can't be fixed,
better to disable the Video Project option.

[Bug 980663] Re: Compiz won't start if unredirect fullscreen windows is enabled

2012-09-11 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
** Description changed:

+ [Test Case]
+ 1. Open CCSM
+ 2. Navigate to ccsm - Composite

+ Visual regressions at most.

Setting unredirect fullscreen windows in ccsm prevents compiz to start
on the next startup, the only visible part of the screen will be the

+ With the big diff, the regression potential might be a bit bigger for precise.

  == Original Report ==

The unity launcher is reliably corrupted upon resume from suspend with
some (all?) NVidia hardware with the proprietary NVidia driver. All
other visual elements seem to draw correctly, it's just the unity
launcher that has this problem. The launcher looks fine after it redraws
(for example, if you mouse over it).

The problem is not reproducible on Intel or AMD graphics hardware, and
I'm told (by Ted Gould) that it doesn't affect the nouveau driver. I
have not tested the nouveau driver myself.

This problem been reported several times in the comments of bug 676166,
I'm filing this separate bug for clarity since 676166 is overloaded.

  To reproduce:
  1) Suspend
  2) Resume
2a) login, if necessary. Note that the login screen (lightdm) displays
properly
  3) Notice the corrupted launcher
  4) Mouse over the launcher; the launcher redraws and the corruption goes away

The problem affects 11.10, and is not fixed by upgrading to more recent
unity, compiz, or nvidia drivers from oneiric-updates or even the most
recent SRU candidates not yet in oneiric-proposed. Currently I have the
following installed and the problem still exists:

  ii nvidia-common 1:0.2.35.1
   Find obsolete NVIDIA drivers
  ii nvidia-current280.13-0ubuntu6
NVIDIA binary Xorg driver, kernel module and VDPAU library

Tool of configuring the NVIDIA graphics driver
  ii nvidia-settings-updates 285.05.09-0ubuntu0.1

Unity SRU candidate (not yet in -proposed):
  ii unity 4.28.0-0ubuntu1~ppa1

[Bug 1044035] Re: UIFe: Checkbox header image is wrong

2012-09-11 Thread David Planella
Al 11/09/12 15:32, En/na Daniel Manrique ha escrit:
 Hello!

I'm writing again to request a UI Freeze Exception for checkbox. Currently
checkbox in Ubuntu has a wrong header image as can be seen here:

 http://people.canonical.com/~roadmr/header-bad.png

We'd like to replace it with this, which is present in the development version
but got left behind during a merge due to an oversight (apologies):

 http://people.canonical.com/~roadmr/header-good.png

This new header image works better with the default Ubuntu theme and also
 takes
care of usability concerns, where testers were unsure if the icons on the
 old
 header image are clickable.

No translatable strings are involved or changed; the system testing string
 on
the right is already in the .pot file and didn't change. Also there's no
 change
 to checkbox's functionality.

The corresponding bug report is this one:

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/checkbox/+bug/1044035

 Thanks!

 - Daniel

Hi Daniel,

A couple of cycles ago I filed a bug requesting the header text to be
translatable, which was eventually fixed in Checkbox.

I now see the untranslated System Testing string in the header again,
even though it is translated in Launchpad. So I assume that this has
regressed and we're back to non-translatable static text (or perhaps it
is a consequence of the of this bug).

Would it not be possible to e.g. reuse the Software Center code already
has for its banners? Visually it'd be identical and the default banner's
text (Our star apps) on the SC is fully translatable already.

Right now, the System Testing text says nothing to non-English
speakers, and it feels a bit out of place in a desktop that is otherwise
fully translated.

Thanks.

Cheers,
David.

[Bug 1049144] Re: Fix Brasero user experience

2012-09-11 Thread Dario Ruellan
** Description changed:

My first experience using Brasero to burn a DVD is awful, and since it
is the default tool shipped with Ubuntu, should be revised by the QA
  team.

  What I want:
Burn a mp4 movie transcoded as DVD.

  What I get:
Obscure dialog messages, packages needed to be installed via the terminal,
and tons of error messages.

  Chronicle:
From Brasero I selected the Video Project, dragging a mp4 file to the
Window. Brasero recognized the file just fine, and I pushed the Burn button.
First message I received was Installing packages by files isn't supported.
Closing that, I get another dialog with some instructions: Please install
the following manually and try again: mplex (GStreamer plugin), dvdauthor.
Just for testing, I searched for this packages on the Ubuntu Software Center.
None found.
Then I searched for Brasero, opening the more info, taking a look at the
Add-ons section. None.
- Time for some Terminal work. sudo apt-get install dvdauthor was easy, but I
could not find mplex. Since the message says it is a GStreamer plugin, I
searched on Google and found that the plugin is part of the
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse, so I installed that.
+ Time for some Terminal work. sudo apt-get install dvdauthor was easy, but I
could not find mplex. Since the message says it is a GStreamer plugin, I
searched on Google and found that the plugin is part of the
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse, so I installed that.
Closing Brasero, opening it again, now it ask for vcdimager, but odd enough,
it autoinstalls the package.

[Bug 1046461] Re: [UIFe] UOA integration needs to support multiple accounts

2012-09-11 Thread Aaron Bentley
Alberto, I find that it is uncommon that the Oauth token has expired. I
have never been prompted to login on the website before publishing, so
clicking the login button seems pointless.

If the OAuth web site is truly a pop-up, I can see the problem with
automatically launching it, since it would get in the way and steal
focus. I think this could be fixed by either

- embedding the web site in the form, so that it doesn't steal focus or
block the UI. That way, you can start loading the web site as soon as
the the user selects publish.

- detect whether the OAuth token has not expired, and skip the login
step.

[Bug 966744] Re: [i965] Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended. Compiz hung in intel_update_renderbuffers() from intel_prepare_render() from brw

2012-09-11 Thread Vladimir Dobriakov
I am currently experiencing this problem with my Lenovo X220 Notebook
under Ubuntu 12.04, `lsmod|grep video` shows `i915`. But I've seen the
same problem for years(!), on e.g. HP Z400 with Nvidia graphics and
Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10. The black-screen-lock happens either on sleep-
resume and even after just locking the keyboard (lock, wait till display
goes to sleep, move the mouse, display wakes up, mouse cursor visible,
but nothing works).

So for me it looks like it is not related to particular hardware or
driver - happens in compiz/unity with different hardware.

[Bug 1048814] Re: Unity silently crashed while opening Dash using shortcut

2012-09-11 Thread Dario Ruellan
Hi Omer.
Sorry, but there is no crash report to be found.
Seems that Unity did not crashed, but silently closed itself, somehow.
If nothing can be done using the logs above, I'm affraid there is nothing more
I can do, until I can reproduce it somehow.

Thanks for taking the time to review it.

[Bug 1039157] Re: vmware/virtualbox kernel modules not loaded by default

2012-09-11 Thread Barry Warsaw
I can't test -proposed because this bug never happened for me before
Quantal, and I don't have a pre-Quantal VM handy (and not enough disk
space to easily spin up a new guest). However, I did a full upgrade on
my Quantal VM, removed the /etc/modules workaround and the module got
properly loaded on boot. glxinfo confirms I'm not using llvmpipe, so I
believe at least for 12.10, this bug has been fixed.

[Bug 997978] Re: KVM images lose connectivity with bridged network

2012-09-11 Thread Mark McLoughlin
Ok, this bug seems to be about KVM networking bugs in Ubuntu. I don't
see anything specific for upstream OpenStack developers to debug or fix.
Marking as Invalid.

If there is some specific OpenStack upstream issue diagnosed, it's
probably best to file a new bug with the details of the specific issue
clearly isolated from everything else going on in this bug.

[Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu

2012-09-11 Thread Marco Biscaro
As the original bug reporter, I can confirm this bug is now solved *to
me* with Ubuntu 12.04 (unity version 5.14.0-0ubuntu1). When idle, compiz
consumes 1% of CPU time and when moving windows and doing other things
related to windows management, it consumes about 5%.

Daniel said in comment #197 that performance bugs are almost always too
vague and subjective and I agree. My performance problem (which this
bug report represents) is now solved. I'll mark this bug as fixed, and
ask that other people that face similar performance problems that open
another bugs reports with their specific hardware info and steps to
reproduce.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1046461] Re: [UIFe] UOA integration needs to support multiple accounts

2012-09-11 Thread Alberto Mardegan
Hi Aaron, thanks for your advice!
So, the embedding can be done, in theory, but I wouldn't recommend it for a
series of reasons of which the main one is the dialog sizing. But your
suggestion of checking whether the OAuth token is still valid before showing
the login button is a good one.

Indeed it makes the code a bit more complicated, but that's life. :-)

Re: [Bug 1033695] Re: External HDMI Monitor does not get detected / invalid EDID checksum

2012-09-11 Thread peterrus
Updating my monitor's firmware fixed this issue, so I think it's rather a
legit message than a bug, however, useful information could be extracted
from the EDID data, so maybe some looser checking could be used.
