scratch that, we haven't SRU'd to Lucid yet. How do you have such a
recent plugin on Lucid?

You need Maverick's aptdaemon, I'm afraid.

functionality, especially with the plugins, but I do have the ubuntu one

your ubuntu one will be worse off, until the next lucid point release
when we're planning a backport/cherrypicking of fixes. On the
functionality side on the music store, you lost the ability to tweet a

[Bug 549167] Re: Services tab options alignment

2010-10-21 Thread John Lenton
On the one hand, the case of the items was fixed (as it was reported
also in a separate bug); the indentation is because, as implied by said
indentation and by the behavior of the app, music store purchases are
delivered using file syncing, so unless you are syncing files you can't
have music purchases synced.

got the information from Intel developer that they got some regression

yet. Therefore the fix will be in only in 2.6.39 kernel (or
 http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/current/).

Since this is rather severe problem, and from what I've seen the eDP
patches were tested in many iterations and not possibly the last one,
I'd suggest keeping this on radar as a patch to be backported to natty's
2.6.38, considering Dell is one of Canonical's key partners for Ubuntu.

I can confirm that the image I downloaded yesterday from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/current/
that is linux-image-2.6.38-997-generic_2.6.38-997.201102120912_i386.deb
is the one that works best for me so far: I've finally stopped using
2.6.36-rc5 with the 900ms patch. X comes up fine, the full HD panel
works (and it's even dithered correctly!), and suspend/resume works
also.

consoles worked, but switching back to X just restored the black screen.
So I could kill and restart my X from another console, so rebooting
wasn't necessary, but of course the session was lost.

I can prevent running into this problem by either unplugging the second
monitor (and quickly reconfiguring the X for single-display) before
suspending or maybe (didn't test this) by attaching another second
monitor before resuming, so there is a workaround.

did you try hitting the 'change monitor' button (or whatever it's
called; Fn+F8 on my e6510) in X?

[Bug 411723] [NEW] apport should let me save a report for later if the upload fails, or at least let me reuse a crash

2009-08-10 Thread John Lenton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

I am extremely frustrated right now; NetworkManager, modem-manager,
linux itself, and apport are giving me a real bad time. I haven't been
this frustrated with a Linux install since... since I was using
Slackware, a *long* time ago.

When I try to connect via my 3g modem, NetworkManager gets modem-manager
to start pppd, but then dies, leaving pppd running but not actually
useful. When it dies, apport helpfully pops up to let me know, so I tell
it to submit a bug: after all, ppp0 is up, so I'm connect, right? Wrong!
The modem driver is in a wacko state, unplugging the modem crashes
linux, so there is nothing I can do to get the connection back and send
the report, and there is nothing in the apport window that lets me save
the report for later. Grrr!

After I reboot, reading apport's documentation I realize that crash
reports are saved in /var/crashes, and yes, there it is. Great, right?
Wrong! ubuntu-bug says no such file or directory, and apport-cli adds
*** Invalid problem report before that. Yay, usability!

2009-08-10 Thread John Lenton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Something in the NetworkManager / modem-manager conversation fails, and
NetworkManager crashes, leaving pppd running but the modem in a really
bad state, and the system very unstable.

Yeah, all the last is probably the kerne's fault (there's a bug for them
on that), but I'm rather frustrated so let me vent, OK? Ok.

So! Here's what I think is relevant from /var/log/syslog:

[Bug 427526] [NEW] FFe: Sync ipython 0.10-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2009-09-10 Thread John Lenton
Public bug reported:

Please sync ipython 0.10-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:

The two patches that were part of the Ubuntu delta,
  debian/patches/07_python-wxgtk2.6_compatibility.patch
  debian/patches/07_deprecate_sets_module.patch
are now included upstream.

The only remaining part of the Ubuntu delta is
  * build requires quilt 0.46-5 or later for unpatch (LP: #383017)
which is easy to redo.

Explanation of FeatureFreeze exception:

0.10 includes a lot of bugfixes, some new features, and is
intented as “a stable and robust release”. The only possible
problem is that ipy_leo.py is no longer included. The leo editor
is not part of Ubuntu, so I don't think this is a problem
(ipy_leo.py was split out of ipython itself, although still
available at lp:~ipython-dev/ipython/ipython-extensions, and is
possibly being incorporated into the leo project itself: see
http://groups.google.com/group/leo-editor/msg/493d6beda66bfb9f).

The debian changes also include a fix for the rename of the
zope.interface package, and a note about quilt usage (in
README.source).

Changelog entries since current karmic version 0.9.1-3ubuntu2:

ipython (0.10-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  [ Bernd Zeimetz ]
  * New upstream version.

  [ Stefano Zacchiroli ]
  * debian/control: fix (build)deps on python-zope-interface, new package
name is python-zope.interface (Closes: #543128)

  [ Piotr Ożarowski ]
  * Standards-Version bumped to 3.8.3
- debian/README.source file added

[Bug 432243] [NEW] when unplugging/replugging a huawei ZTE MF622 3g modem: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at c01e3e2c

2009-09-17 Thread John Lenton
Public bug reported:

This is very similar to #353224, except that it's a BUG and not just a
WARNING, and that I had to reboot, and fsck failed because the mount
timestamps were all in the future. I'm hoping I haven't lost data ... so
far so good.

The things it has in common, apart from the modem itself, is that the
bug only seems to happen when I used NetworkManager to connect; I've
been using pon/poff with no problems at all.

One thing modemmanager does which I don't do when using pon/poff is
probe the device via ttyUSB1. Maybe that is related? I have no idea.

[Bug 610055] [NEW] computer stuttering, freezing, hanging, and otherwise being uncooperative

2010-07-26 Thread John Lenton
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure if this should be one bug report or many, and I don't have much
info to put in here.
My computer is stuttering (doing small one-second freeze, similar to a OOM but
it's not that), freezing (mouse and keyboard lock up, but wifi still blinks)
and hanging completely (although this might be the same as the latter, because
it happens when I open the lid - not a suspend/resume cycle, just closing the
lid while on AC, opening it, blank screen and no activity).
There is very little in the logs. The stuttering happens at random times, but
especially when plugging in AC, at which point I get a SATA error in the logs,
something like:
Jul 21 10:54:31 hulla kernel: [ 5913.787813] ata6: exception Emask 0x10 SAct
0x0 SErr 0x404 action 0xe frozen

ready)
Jul 21 10:54:41 hulla kernel: [ 5923.792609] ata6: hard resetting link
setting /sys/class/scsi_host/host1/link_power_management_policy to min_power
stops the stuttering once it's started, and turning off IRRT seems to have
gotten rid of them (but the system is slower as a result).
I also get something similar almost every day, right after cron finishes,

[Bug 610063] [NEW] no sound device on boot

2010-07-26 Thread John Lenton
Public bug reported:

In fooling around trying to find the source of another issue I manually
unloaded my snd* modules (using modprobe -r), and now they don't come up
automatically and I have to load them manually every boot. I'm fairly
certain I used to be able to mess with modprobe without it breaking
stuff permanently... so this is probably some bug I've tripped over.

that shouldn't happen, ever.
What *could* happen in certain circumstances is that the local
syncdaemon thinks (either correctly or in error) that the server
has a new version and at the same time that it has local
un-synchronized changes. In such a situation, the local file will be
renamed by adding .u1conflict to the filename. Could you confirm
whether you have .u1conflict files?

[Bug 602937] [NEW] when in focus-follows-mouse the mouse generates fake events when over text

2010-07-07 Thread John Lenton
Public bug reported:

I use focus-follows-mouse (System - Preferences - Windows - Select windows
when the mouse moves over them), and in Maverick it's broken: when the mouse
hovers over a widget that has text some kind of fake events start happening (so
the mouse cursor starts blinking like crazy, very distracting in and of
itself). If I alt-tab away from the window that has the mouse cursor over it,
these fake events bring the focus back.
When not in focus-follows-mouse, the fake events don't happen (no mouse cursor
flickering).
I've tried both with and without desktop effects turned on, and it happens on
both.

[Bug 621226] [NEW] ubuntu-sso-client needs to ping ubuntuone server

2010-08-20 Thread John Lenton
Public bug reported:

The SSO client needs to be able to ping a specified URL to signal
approval of TCs (and trigger account and subscription creation when
necessary). For now this is just for Ubuntu One, but it might have to be
more generic down the road (this goes hand in hand with SSO doing a
similar ping to trusted api users). Without this, new accounts in Ubuntu

[Bug 600453] Re: [arrandale] [i915] DELL E6510: blank screen on boot (Intel GPU)

2010-09-23 Thread John Lenton
I tested the drm-intel-next kernel and got no X at all; had to add nomodeset at
boot and use the vesa driver to get X.
With 2.6.36-020636rc3 I get X after switching to console and back, but no
console and the colours on X were wrong (32 bits, but 4/4/4 apparently).
Downloading 2.6.36-020636rc5 to try my luck with that :)

[Bug 600453] Re: [arrandale] [i915] DELL E6510: blank screen on boot (Intel GPU)

2010-09-23 Thread John Lenton
ok, now running 2.6.36-020636rc5-generic, and it's the same as rc3; I have to
switch to console and back to get X, console is blank, I have banding on known
smooth images, and xrandr output is shot.
xrandr output:

(null)1 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
344mm x 194mm
   1920x1080 60.0*+ 40.0

(plus the normal list of disconnected devices).

An interesting point is that if I connect a monitor to VGA1, I still get
no console but I don't need to switch there and back for X to start.

2010-03-31 Thread John Lenton
As soon as the linked branch lands in ubuntuone-client trunk (it's being
reviewd now), we'll have a .desktop file that looks like
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Ubuntu One
Exec=ubuntuone-launch
Type=Application
X-GNOME-Autostart-Delay=30

ubuntuone-launch is a python script that has a series of increasingly
more expensive tests to decide whether to start and connect the
syncdaemon or not. The first test is for the existence of the Ubuntu One
directory, which should be bail out early for most users.

 Exec=/bin/sh -c '[ -d $HOME/Ubuntu One ]  ubuntuone-launch'

OK, done. The latter, that is.

I'm not sure how much better it is; there already are some python
scripts in the startup, so python itself will be cached in memory, and
if the directory doesn't exist the only modules used (os and sys) will
have been loaded before also. And this is 30 seconds after everything
else has started, with the difference between the sh version and the
python version clocking in at 1ms versus 10ms on my machine. So... not
sure how much better it is, and I could argue that it's worse, but
I've implemented it because I think it's a reasonable middle ground,
and the freeze clock is ticking.

Thank you for your enduring patience and your constructive
suggestions.

[Bug 546348] Re: notify-osd does not disappear on mouseover

2010-03-26 Thread John Lenton
This is a regression, and makes the notifications unusable unless I
enable composition (which doesn't work for me). Previously the
notifications would simply disappear on mouseover and let me not only
read but click on things under them. Now they don't.

[Bug 534707] Re: [Freeze Exception] ubuntuone-client: Syncdaemon needs to auto-start/connect in Lucid

2010-03-22 Thread John Lenton
Hi Steve!

Yes, it's a bug, a regression from ubuntuone-client in 9.10. However,
the way we need to fix it is *probably* (we aren't working on this issue
yet) with a small script that is started at session startup, not a fix
to existing binaries. That felt like a FFe-needing feature more than a
simple bugfix to us, which is why we're asking for one. If you'd rather
wait until we had the code done, so we actually knew whether this is
needed, no problem!
