does not recognize the intel driver, I read about a bug in kernel

happen, but I think I'm gonna try Intrepid to get this working. Thanx!

[Bug 351012] [NEW] Totem spontaneously opens help window

2009-03-29 Thread Paulo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Whenever I open totem to play streaming media, it periodically (about
every 2 minutes) pops up a help window, as if I had pressed F1. If I
let it playing in the background and switch to another application, it
causes that application's help window to pop up. I have not found what
causes this.

My system runs Ubuntu 8.04, and I keep it always up-to-date. I didn't
have this problem when I ran 7.10, and the upgrade to 8.04 was done
through update-manager (I don't know if this is the cause, but I had
other problems when upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04 in other machines,
especially when using NIS).

As a side note, I do not use Kubuntu, but I have switched to KDE
desktop. I am not sure right now, but I think that this help pop-up
spontaneously open problem also happens under Gnome.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 150783] Re: bug or feature request - kernel: Removing modules do not turn off devices

2007-10-14 Thread Paulo
I could see that the latest K sources already have USB_SUSPEND.
Unfortunately they do not work however (!). Removing the wireless module does
not turn off the led from my USB wireless card.

I have been playing with the kernel options trying to find any other
reason/configuration without any success so far! I am sure that
USB_SUSPEND is needed although it seems to be not enough.

Does anybody have any suggestion I could check?

[Bug 150635] Re: irda-utils causes system unbootable!

2007-10-16 Thread Paulo
I have customized the current kernel to my needs plus some options, needed to
build the ubuntu-modules package, and the problem went away! Unfortunately I
can't determine which parameter(s) caused this problem. Reinstalling the
original package (original config) causes the problem to come back.
Hope this could somehow help.

[Bug 150635] irda-utils causes system unbootable!

2007-10-08 Thread Paulo
Public bug reported:

Last updated kubuntu gutsy (2007-10-07)
HW: Laptop compaq presario series 2500

*Summary*

Installing irda-utils (and openobex-apps) causes:
- infra-red stuff does not work (ali_ircc does not load)
- system does not enter X when rebooting remaining completely frozen

*Cronological description*

1. I installed irda-utils

2. Run related irda scripts (installed in /etc/init.d)

3. Could not get irxfer or ircp to work

4. lsmod did not show ali_ircc module, so I did
   modprobe ali_ircc
and got the following message:
FATAL: Error inserting ali_ircc
(/lib/modules/2.6.22-13-generic/kernel/drivers/net/irda/ali-ircc.ko): No
such device

5. dmesg shows:
[ 1280.232000] NET: Registered protocol family 23
[ 1361.76] ali-ircc, driver loaded (Benjamin Kong)
[ 1361.76] ali_ircc_open(), can't get iobase of 0x2f8
[ 1393.228000] IrCOMM protocol (Dag Brattli)
[ 1478.052000] ali-ircc, driver loaded (Benjamin Kong)
[ 1478.052000] ali_ircc_open(), can't get iobase of 0x2f8
[ 1521.32] usb 3-3: USB disconnect, address 2
[ 1585.58] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
[ 1608.68] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

6. lsmod | grep ir shows:
ircomm 23812 0
irda 202300 1 ircomm
crc_ccitt 3072 1 irda

7. Rebooting after this (choosing NO SPLASH)
I could see an apparently normal reboot until the point (not absolutely
sure here) kdm launches X.
The screen became all black (no cursor) and the keyboard became
completly frozen, even the kernel magic combinations (alt+prt sc+{s,u,b})!

8. I pressed power off button for 5 secs, booted from another partition,
entered the previous system using chroot and uninstalled irda-tools
using aptitude.

After this I could reboot the system again.

9. I tried all of this several times. So, it is always reproducible.

Regards.

[Bug 150783] bug or feature request - kernel: Removing modules do not turn off devices

2007-10-08 Thread Paulo
Public bug reported:

I noticed that removing usb wireless modules, for example, does not turn
off the devices.
This is important for laptops. Devices, when not in use, should be
turned off.
I think this is caused by kernel not being built with devices->USB
support->USB selective suspend/resume and wakeup (USB_SUSPEND) enabled.
Not sure here however.

Regards.

[Bug 150783] Re: bug or feature request - kernel: Removing modules do not turn off devices

2007-10-08 Thread Paulo
kernel 2.6.22-13.
I think any recent kernels have that option.
The modules involved are those related with rt2570 legacy usb wireless drivers
or ndiswrapper+rt2500usb, at least.

BTW, my ASUS wl-167g USB does not work with rt2x00usb drivers. It works
with rt2570 legacy (cvs) and with ndiswrapper. I'll wait for newer
rt2x00 versions before filing a new bug.

[Bug 150783] Re: bug or feature request - kernel: Removing modules do not turn off devices

2008-02-18 Thread Paulo
I have been analyzing the problem using a 2.6.24 kernel and I found
where the problem is.

As I thought, devices->USB support->USB selective suspend/resume and
wakeup (USB_SUSPEND) is needed.

Besides, for later kernels, /sys/bus/usb/devices//power/level is
initialized with "on" instead of "auto".
Doing 'echo auto > /sys/bus/usb/devices//power/level' fixes the problem.

I don't know the reason for this to have changed however.
May be upstream has something to say about this.

[Bug 207369] Re: "visudo" is completely unusable (/etc/sudoers can only be editted with an external text editor)

2008-04-25 Thread Paulo
I am using the final version of Hardy and, like Iain, also have the
habit to remove the password grace period. I also limit sudo password
grace period to individual ttys, instead of global, by adding
"Defaults:ALL tty_tickets".

I was driving nuts and almost ruined sudoers because I couldn't edit
anything when "sudo visudo" (:i, Esc, :w, etc... nothing worked).
Luckily I found this thread and the tip by Constantine Evans solved this
issue.

Sorry to say, but this is totally crazy! I love Ubuntu (especially Hardy
where everything works great) but this "bug" is a real pain in the neck.

[Bug 150783] Re: bug or feature request - kernel: Removing modules do not turn off devices

2008-02-08 Thread Paulo
Well ... I had a few problems in order to boot. The current release
failled to recognize my graphic card and did not install "radeon"
module. Perhaps because of this it also generated a wrong xorg.conf. So
loading "radeon" manually did not work. After loading gdm my system
displayed a black screen with some garbage on top and the keyboard was
completely frozen except for kernel magic keys (ctrl+alt+prt sc+...).

Anyway I could boot without splash and typing several ctrl-c/alt-f1 when
the gdm began to startup I could get a console (BTW, any other way to
boot without X?).

I removed all rt2* modules but the wifi USB card still kept its led on.
So, the bug still exists.

Regards

[Bug 55782] Re: doesnt open in edgy

2006-11-01 Thread Paulo
We had two bugs heres.
1- There are missing config files:
/usr/share/apps/kxdocker/kxdocker_conf_default.xml and
/usr/share/apps/kxdocker/kxdocker_conf.xml. Actually the files exist, but they
are empty! :|
2- The package kxdocker-data don't contain all the plugins necessary to
kxdocker work. So even if the config files of a older version kxdocker will not
load the plugins, like Brian said it above.
All this problems are caused by the packaging. Some one send a email to the
package maintainer?

[Bug 47988] Re: Adept Notifier tray icon appears and dissapears on login

2007-01-31 Thread Paulo
I have the same problem told by Vincenzo in the commentary above. Iḿ
using Beryl in Kubuntu Edgy Eft and icon of adept notifier don't stand
in the systray. If I kill the adept notifier e start it again it will be
hidden, but the empty space in the systray remains. If the systray is
chaged, like to add/remove another icon, the apedt notifier icon will be
pushed off the systray. As Vincenzo said the bug is in adept, since all
other applications don't behave like that.

[Bug 47988] Re: Adept Notifier tray icon appears and dissapears on login

2007-02-01 Thread Paulo
Maybe the problem isn't adept notifier. Just about to happen the same
thing with amarok, the icon do not stay in the systray. The adept
notifier was hidden as expected, but any other icons was not accepted in
the systray. May be this error was caused by Beryl.

[Bug 403408] Re: Grub 2 problem, error: no such device

2010-03-06 Thread PaulO
1. From the grub bootmenu, press e to get to edit mode.
2. Erase the line starting with "search --nofloppy ..." and then press Ctrl+X
to boot.
3. When up and running you should run the command sudo update-grub.

I was able to perform steps 1 and 2 and boot successfully once but then
rebooting gvives me the same problem, iUnrstand because I wasnt able to
complete the Step #3 of updating grub

Will someone please explain to me how to perform step 3, I typesudo
update-grub in the box from #2 and try to boot but it says that id does not
recognize the command sudo - I do not understand what this means by "when up
and running", once I hit Cntrl X to boot , having deleted the line, there is no
time to type anything before the system boots up. Where do I type
sudo update-grub?

Will someone please explain? Thanks.

[Bug 1780133] [NEW] grub installer failed to install on clean OS install

2018-07-04 Thread Paulo
Public bug reported:

Installed on a new Samsung EVO 970. Only one partition /. No swap. No previous
installation on the disc. No encryption, no anything: As straight forwards as

The only thing is that it asked me if i wanted to install in EFI mode given
that it detected other OS in bios mode which is quite weird, given the disk is
new from the box and seal.

I also chose a manual partition table with just a single partition. All
through the GUI

[Bug 1793572] [NEW] systemd-logind crashes with NIS users

2018-09-20 Thread Paulo
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release:18.04

In a fresh Ubuntu 18.04.1 install, after having set up NIS for connecting to my
company's network, I noticed several problems happening when I tried to log in
with my NIS user account.

Initially logged in with a local user, I set up NIS client, and
confirmed that NIS queries were OK, and then I tried to "ssh
my_nis_acct@localhost", which hanged for a while, and them my X session
crashed.

Attempts to log in on the text console produced the following behavior:
after typing in the password and getting some session-related messages,
the login process hanged for 25 seconds, during which the machine became
pretty much unusable, but then the login completed. However, a couple
of minutes later, the X session of the local user (which was left open
at tty1) suddenly died. That situation was consistently reproducible.

Googling words related to the symptoms (most especially the 25-second hangs), I
came across a bug report for Fedora, stating that the culprit would be nss_nis
(cf.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1576558 and
https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2018-78f95660f9).

As an workaround, I disabled pam_systemd.so in every PAM module that
referred to it. Now I could login freely with NIS-based accounts, but
lost the facilities of systemd-logind.

After having has an idea about who the culprit was and managing to
restore login for NIS-based users, I indeed saw messages in
/var/log/syslog that showed at the time when systemd-logind crashed,
indeed consistently preceded by another indicating something wrong
related to some NIS query, such as shown in the excerpt below.

well.
