[Bug 351012] [NEW] Totem spontaneously opens help window
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem Whenever I open totem to play streaming media, it periodically (about every 2 minutes) pops up a help window, as if I had pressed F1. If I let it playing in the background and switch to another application, it causes that application's help window to pop up. I have not found what causes this. My system runs Ubuntu 8.04, and I keep it always up-to-date. I didn't have this problem when I ran 7.10, and the upgrade to 8.04 was done through update-manager (I don't know if this is the cause, but I had other problems when upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04 in other machines, especially when using NIS). As a side note, I do not use Kubuntu, but I have switched to KDE desktop. I am not sure right now, but I think that this help pop-up spontaneously open problem also happens under Gnome. I pressed power off button for 5 secs, booted from another partition, entered the previous system using chroot and uninstalled irda-tools using aptitude. [Bug 150783] bug or feature request - kernel: Removing modules do not turn off devices
Public bug reported: I noticed that removing usb wireless modules, for example, does not turn off the devices. This is important for laptops. Devices, when not in use, should be turned off. [Bug 150783] Re: bug or feature request - kernel: Removing modules do not turn off devices
kernel 2.6.22-13. I think any recent kernels have that option. The modules involved are those related with rt2570 legacy usb wireless drivers or ndiswrapper+rt2500usb, at least. BTW, my ASUS wl-167g USB does not work with rt2x00usb drivers. It works with rt2570 legacy (cvs) and with ndiswrapper. [Bug 150783] Re: bug or feature request - kernel: Removing modules do not turn off devices
I have been analyzing the problem using a 2.6.24 kernel and I found where the problem is. As I thought, devices->USB support->USB selective suspend/resume and wakeup (USB_SUSPEND) is needed. Besides, for later kernels, /sys/bus/usb/devices//power/level is initialized with "on" instead of "auto". Doing 'echo auto > /sys/bus/usb/devices//power/level' fixes the problem. I don't know the reason for this to have changed however. [Bug 207369] Re: "visudo" is completely unusable (/etc/sudoers can only be editted with an external text editor)
I am using the final version of Hardy and, like Iain, also have the habit to remove the password grace period. I also limit sudo password grace period to individual ttys, instead of global, by adding "Defaults:ALL tty_tickets". I was driving nuts and almost ruined sudoers because I couldn't edit anything when "sudo visudo" (:i, Esc, :w, etc... nothing worked). Luckily I found this thread and the tip by Constantine Evans solved this issue. Sorry to say, but this is totally crazy! [Bug 150783] Re: bug or feature request - kernel: Removing modules do not turn off devices
Well ... I had a few problems in order to boot. The current release failled to recognize my graphic card and did not install "radeon" module. Perhaps because of this it also generated a wrong xorg.conf. So loading "radeon" manually did not work. After loading gdm my system displayed a black screen with some garbage on top and the keyboard was completely frozen except for kernel magic keys (ctrl+alt+prt sc+...). Anyway I could boot without splash and typing several ctrl-c/alt-f1 when the gdm began to startup I could get a console (BTW, any other way to boot without X?). I removed all rt2* modules but the wifi USB card still kept its led on. So, the bug still exists. [Bug 47988] Re: Adept Notifier tray icon appears and dissapears on login
I have the same problem told by Vincenzo in the commentary above. Iḿ using Beryl in Kubuntu Edgy Eft and icon of adept notifier don't stand in the systray. If I kill the adept notifier e start it again it will be hidden, but the empty space in the systray remains. If the systray is chaged, like to add/remove another icon, the apedt notifier icon will be pushed off the systray. As Vincenzo said the bug is in adept, since all other applications don't behave like that. -- Adept Notifier tray icon appears and dissapears on login https://launchpad.net/bugs/47988 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 47988] Re: Adept Notifier tray icon appears and dissapears on login
Maybe the problem isn't adept notifier. Just about to happen the same thing with amarok, the icon do not stay in the systray. The adept notifier was hidden as expected, but any other icons was not accepted in the systray. May be this error was caused by Beryl. -- Adept Notifier tray icon appears and dissapears on login https://launchpad.net/bugs/47988 -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1793572] [NEW] systemd-logind crashes with NIS users
Public bug reported: Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS Release:18.04 In a fresh Ubuntu 18.04.1 install, after having set up NIS for connecting to my company's network, I noticed several problems happening when I tried to log in with my NIS user account. Initially logged in with a local user, I set up NIS client, and confirmed that NIS queries were OK, and then I tried to "ssh my_nis_acct@localhost", which hanged for a while, and them my X session crashed. Attempts to log in on the text console produced the following behavior: after typing in the password and getting some session-related messages, the login process hanged for 25 seconds, during which the machine became pretty much unusable, but then the login completed. However, a couple of minutes later, the X session of the local user (which was left open at tty1) suddenly died. That situation was consistently reproducible. Googling words related to the symptoms (most especially the 25-second hangs), I came across a bug report for Fedora, stating that the culprit would be nss_nis (cf. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1576558 and https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2018-78f95660f9). As an workaround, I disabled pam_systemd.so in every PAM module that referred to it. Now I could login freely with NIS-based accounts, but lost the facilities of systemd-logind. After having has an idea about who the culprit was and managing to restore login for NIS-based users, I indeed saw messages in /var/log/syslog that showed at the time when systemd-logind crashed, indeed consistently preceded by another indicating something wrong related to some NIS query, such as shown in the excerpt below. - Sep 15 07:51:36 my-machine systemd-logind[26803]: do_ypcall: clnt_call: RPC: Unable to send; errno = Operation not permitted Sep 15 07:54:36 my-machine systemd[1]: systemd-logind.service: Watchdog timeout (limit 3min)!
