Assuming you want to work on the technical side of things:

The focus for xenial is now fixing bugs, given we are past feature freeze, and
most all of GNOME 3.18 is in the archives. Some of these fixes
can just be backported from 3.20, but finding them is the challenge! Others we
fix and then forward upstream. Most of the code is C, with a
little JS and Vala (more or less C# like).

The focus on the PPA's is getting 3.20 packaged up, this is mostly just debian
packaging work, with the odd build patch or what not. This work
forms the basis of what will land in 16.10 around May, its also useful for
people that want to test if a bug exists in latest upstream, or just
want the bleeding edge.

There is still some work to refine our scripts/process for the git packaging
branches (so far these are only for the ppa):
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-gnome/ubuntu/
That would mostly be bash/python scripting and a some documentation on the wiki

On the semi-technical side: there is bug triaging, i.e. finding relevant bugs
and making sure they have enough information to be able to fix
(stacktraces, reproducers etc)

Other infrastructure work, such as setting up CI testing, autopkgtests etc, but
no one ever seems to do this and its not really the best time in
the cycle to be doing it.

Tracking of RC bugs, and tagging those (requires special permissions, but we
can organise those).

Coming up with a solution to our communication problems, if web-ish stuff is
your thing!

There is plenty of other non-technical stuff that goes on, but Ali would be
best to fill you in on those!

Thanks
  Tim

Hi there;

and first off, thanks for the message and for doing a great job on
Ubuntu GNOME so far. IMHO this is right now the best way of having a
modestly up-to-date GNOME on top of a *deb based package management,
and that's quite a good thing...

Well, where to get started and get involved quickly? Though I am by
profession into software development, my experience in working with
FOSS projects is very limited, and so is my spare time but I gladly
would contribute wherever / however possible...

Cheers,

Moment of Truth

2016-02-28 Thread Ali/amjjawad
Hi all,

Ubuntu GNOME Team is working on Ubuntu GNOME project as volunteers and for
FREE (money) and none of them are getting paid 0.1$ whatsoever, period. We
do what we do because we love what we do.

In 22nd of July 2013, I have signed up and joined Ubuntu GNOME as a
volunteer. My contributions to this project are countless

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/amjjawad/UbuntuGNOME-Team
Mind you, last time I updated this page was:

amjjawad/UbuntuGNOME-Team (last edited 2014-11-16 19:39:52 by amjjawad
)

Yet, I am still around despite the fact that I am having serious and urgent
real-life issues I must solve ASAP .. yet, I am around and helping.

However, the way this community is doing is something I can't keep silent
about any more and to be more accurate, I don't and can't understand why
only very few must burnout and do all the job while 'most' of the others
take the comfortable view that someone else is looking after it and they're
not helping whenever we do need help?!

That said, I am giving this community a chance until releasing 16.04 in
April to prove it's a real community. If this community won't start working
as one team and one family, I am afraid I can't be part of this any more.

I definitely don't want to quit no matter how hard it is but the last
milestone, I understood clearly what is the real meaning of team-work which
I haven't seen much around.

*There are few names here, they're the main reason why I am still here.*
*Tim, Lance, and few others .. are the main reason why I am here still.*
The other reason is, I love what I do but it is getting a huge burden I no
longer wish to carry *ALONE* any more.

You need to know one important thing about me. I don't work in any project
alone. Whenever I work within any project, that project must have a team
and that team must be active.

I have done ALL what I could to make this community as active as it should
be but it seems I found 10,000 ways that did not work. So, this is my
10,001 try .. let's see :)

Thank you!

Moment of Truth

2014-01-06 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Hi Ubuntu GNOME QA Team,

I am including the main list as well :)

From now and on, I will have more time for the QA Team which to be honest,
I have been a bit far from lately due to many reasons that you might be
aware of: I am handling '4' sub-teams at the same time :)

The work progress with the other sub-teams are really great so, starting
from today, I will have more time for the QA so be ready for my nagging :P

Okay, to be honest, I am wondering why Ubuntu GNOME QA have so many members
but the activities on the mailing lists don't really reflect that quantity?

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntugnome-qa/+members#active

That makes me think:

1- Either Ubuntu GNOME Trusty is ROCK SOLID and there are really few issues
which is super great
OR
2- Only few are active (those who are sending emails and reporting bugs -
do communicate and make themselves known) and the rest are INACTIVE which
is not acceptable :)

You see, we do need Quality over Quantity and this what I have been
personally doing for the past few months :)

All the other sub-teams are doing great specially the Wiki Team.
Our Marketing and Communications sub-team is doing great as well.
All these emails and planning is part of the Brainstorming Team.

So, I'd like to hear/read from you about the QA Team :)

- What do you think of this team?
- What do we really need?
- https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/Testing has been updated 2 weeks ago
so is that enough? or is it still hard to follow?
- Should I worry and start recruiting more members/testers?
- Is it really mission impossible to have a meeting for the QA team?
- Whatever you have in mind, please ask :)

I will be waiting for your reply :)

While everything seems to be okay for now since we are on the Alpha 1 and
soon, will have Alpha 2 but that should not mean we take it easy :)

From my side, I will take sometime to come up with some 'new' ideas for
this team to make things be better, more fun and excited. BUT, I do need to
hear from you first, please :)

Thank you!

Hi,

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-gnome/+milestone/trusty

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/GettingInvolved/WhoWeAre

:)

Whenever you see a name assigned to any bug on Launchpad, it means someone
is working on that.

We are lucky to have Tim and as always, it is a pleasure to work with super
nice developer like him who does communicate with his team, answers emails
himself, etc. Trust me, he is doing the right thing and trust me again
other communities don't have that at all.

Ubuntu GNOME QA Team has been founded to make life easier for our
developers. If we managed to gain the skills and experiences to actually
fix bugs? that is the best of the best for sure. However, for now, we need
to do the most basic task of this team, that is testing :)

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/Testing
I believe this page has everything that a tester needs to know.

If there is anything not clear, I and everyone here will be more than glad
to explain in details.

Thank you :)

  Hi Lance,

Bugzilla? AFAIK, we at Ubuntu GNOME are only using Launchpad for
 reporting bugs :)

It is not uncommon for developers to request the Bug reporter to file the
Bug upstream where relevant, obviously the actual reporter can usually
 provide more info, testing etc.

That said upstream bugs should really only be submitted once an Ubuntu
 Developer has requested it.

Hi Lance,

Bugzilla? AFAIK, we at Ubuntu GNOME are only using Launchpad for reporting
bugs :)

It is not uncommon for developers to request the Bug reporter to file the Bug
upstream where relevant, obviously the actual reporter can usually provide more
info, testing etc.

That said upstream bugs should really only be submitted once an
Ubuntu Developer has requested it.

Re: [Ubuntugnome-qa] Moment of Truth

2014-01-06 Thread Steve Ovens
On the issue of bugs, when we see something that differs from stock gnome
that we would like back, some projects have these filed as bugs. How should
this be handled in Ubuntu Gnome?

I am specifically thinking about how the network icon is missing in Trusty
as compared to my Arch install. I find it very disruptive to click on the
top right corner, select settings and then network to get to network
settings. I assume this is a feature request and not actually a bug?

What network connections do you have?

I believe that in 3.10 the network icon is not shown when you have a
wired ethernet as your primary connection, it will of course be
shown for wireless, bluetooth etc connections.
