[ubuntu-art] Blubuntu Font Theme
Hi, I am interested in helping the development of Blubuntu. Would a new font scheme be possible? Everything else about Ubuntu is easily customizable, but the fonts always have to be changed manually. I think it would be a good idea to have a new default font for Blubuntu. [ubuntu-in] Package management crashed - How to re-install
I tried to Install PostgreSql in my Ubuntu6.10 Edgy system from downloaded deb packages from packages.ubuntu.com, there was one dependancy package called postgresql-commom. when i installed that package, it was infinite time not got completed so i cancelled that process. Thereafter i am not able to install any other packages using GDebi, Synaptic or aptitude. all those components showing error like postgresql-common needs to be re-installed. I can't even install postgresql-common package too. How can i reinstall that package management system lonely or i have to re-install the whole system. Since i have no internet connection in my pc, i have downloaded those packages in a browsing center and used Gdebi installer to install them -- Regards Bose. I really dont get the deal with all the fancy effects. Yeah they are awesome from time-to-time (like showing off to mates) but I find them so irritating a lot more of the time. I just couldnt wrap my mind around windows vista when running the beta, the interface just made things 90X harder for me. It also slowed the machine down to hell. With ubuntu the xgl stuff is a lot spiffier and quicker, but still I get annoyed with it all. The features I did like were displaying thumbnails of all the open windows and easy placing of stuff in the cube, but there were so many bugs running xgl anyway I had to take it off. (things like openGL apps that ran on top of xgl were going crazy, multiple desktop support is a bit off, sessions etc etc) Until a lot of the HCI stuff is sorted out with it I will stick to how it is now :) If they can figure out a way to make it like minority report I will DEFINITELY switch. For now I see it as more of a glossing up of the desktop instead of anything particularly useful. The idea of rendering the desktop in openGL is a fantastic idea though, i'm not putting anyone down for that - just get that bit working first before adding raindrops and snow. [ubuntu-uk] RSS Feed Scraper
Hi all, Does anyone know of a command-line based Feed Scraper I could hack to download podcasts from the RSS feeds? I'm working on a script that downloads the latest episodes, works out when I walk through the door which files are currently on my phone and then does a file sync via bluetooth overnight so that I have the latest files on my phone the next day. I've got to the point where I need to scrape the RSS for MP3s (sony-ericsson phone I'm afraid, MP3 or nothing...) but I can't find any comand-line based tools to scrape the content. I've considered hacking something together using awk, grep and wget but that feels kinda clumsy. Answers on a postcard to the usual address... Is this done by snooping the traffic that is going between the computer and router or by bombarding the router with various keys until it responds? Anyone know for sure? I know a couple of guys who work on computer crypotography and they quote figures like a million transfered packets to get the key reliably and they know cos they've done it. Depends on what you mean by similar. It has a point and click graphical interface. It does have a very powerful command line interface but it's there for the people who want to use it, you won't really need to use it if you don't want to. You don't need to be able to code or program. The Ubuntu desktop is very similar to the Windows one. It has the now-standard WIMP (Windows, Icons, Mouse and Pointer) interface and the vast majority of what you will need to do is possible using this interface. Many of the free applications available for Ubuntu (e.g. OpenOffice, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, GIMP) are also available for Windows, so you can try them out even without trying Ubuntu! There are some, usually more in-depth, tasks for which the command line is required, as is the case with Windows. The command line is a very powerful tool and is not to be feared! How secure is it? The more 'interesting' packets you have gathered the faster the cracking can be achieved, with a million; it would take seconds - but the gathering takes a little longer. E IIRC, this was from sniffing packets then doing a local bruteforce on the sniffed data. the ever-reliable (??!!!) register has this article: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/05/15/wep_crack_interview/ which states: When WEP was compromised in 2001, the attack needed more than five million packets to succeed. During the summer of 2004, a hacker named KoreK published a new WEP attack (called chopper) that reduced by an order of magnitude the number of packets requested, letting people crack keys with hundreds of thousands of packets, instead of millions. Last month, three researchers, Erik Tews, Andrei Pychkine and Ralf-Philipp Weinmann developed a faster attack (based on a cryptanalysis of RC4 by Andreas Klein), that works with ARP packets and just needs 85,000 packets to crack the key with a 95 per cent probablity. This means getting the key in less than two minutes. Hi, I am new to linux. I have just built my first system and decided to give linux a go. I installed the latest version of ubuntu and was really impressed; I already prefer it to windows. Your idea sounds really good and if people become more aware of what it is really about more people will switch. Darren. But, you can over do it. All of the 'hackers' I know won't sit outside your house trying to crack your WEP to get your eBay password etc. One of the simplest things you can do to keep people off your bandwidth is switch your router off when you're not going to use it. Ello all It could be like a 3 step leaflet: Download, Burn, Install. Put another page full of 'myth-busters' (ie no it wont wreck your windows install, you wont lose data if you partition right, etc. Couple of screenshots and performance comparisons, quick explanation of the FOSS movement and bang :) you have a leaflet. I think it would be a good idea to involved the Marketing Team on this (I'm not sure what the current status is with the DIY Marketing effort) to get their input and possibly re-use some of their existing work. Hi, to anyone who wants to use the new version of ubuntu. I noticed speech is still broken on todays live CD. However if you install speech-dispatcher and run orca --setup you can pick speech-dispatcher and get orca working. Of course the volume will be low, so you have to modify the conf file for speech-dispatcher to a value of 50 to increase it. One other thing I found is the feature to start orca automatically is also broken and you have to start orca manually every time. I haven't found any new features yet, but the version of orca is later than the one in feisty, and the preferences for accessibility are nicely grouped together. This will result in a fork of the translation and lost efforts on both sides. It makes me a little bit sad to see that a reasonable cooperation and coordination between upstream and Ubuntu still does not exist. This is a different problem: we haven't encouraged enough cooperation between Ubuntu translation teams and upstream teams. Basically, this would be the same problem that happens in upstream teams: two people start translating a single PO file without letting each other know, so we end up with wasted work. Here it's only more pronounced because of the larger distance between the teams. The last time I asked (which is quite some time ago) such regular/scheduled/dependable integrations had hot yet been accomplished, have they been accomplished now? And in that case where can I read about the integration schedule and/or rutine? We still want to keep ability to modify strings coming from packages, and having a one-click option would encourage ignoring those translations which indeed have problems. However, note that once you revert the string, it will continue getting updates from upstream without the need to re-revert it again. Well I don't know how to respond to that. For the Danish language we do ALL GNOME and KDE translations upstream and therefore the LP team is a subset of the upstream teams whose only job is to fix integrations problems and translate Ubuntu specific packages. Furthermore whenever we are informed of an error we fix it both places (LP and upstream) as soon as it is possible. This means that the hypothetical situation you mention above (if the change you mentions refers to an error that gets fixed) simply doesn't exist. And those two projects in them selves are something like 60-70.000 strings, so thats a lot of nexts that could be spared. That fact that we have problems now is of course our doing because we didn't close the LP-group the first chance we got (stupid us :) ). But I must say that I don't think that it is something that will do wonders for the already problematic Ubuntu-LP/upstream translation-relations that you, by policy, will be forcing translators to waste time on something like this, even if it is a one time thing. All things considering I think that time could be used in a better way on something like . well actually translating something. Please forgive me if I sound harsh, that is not my intention, but it just that the entire LP/Rosetta experience have been very frustrating (not being able to search for translations or strings in translations and these problems with imporrt/export and functionality and priority) for a lot of people that want to help, and now when it gets fixed it still doesn't really solve the problem in a satisfactory way. Oh well. Could I suggest then that it could be made possible to filter for these strings (the ones that are different from upstream), so that we wont have spend to much time doing this kind of trivial work? I have another question that in some way relates to this. I know how it works for GNOME and Ubuntu: they are integrated whenever GNOME modules have a release, or at the very least, when GNOME does a full release (eg. 2.19.1 on April 23rd, .2 on May 16th, .3 on June 6th, .4 on June 20th, .5 on July 11th, .6 on August 1st, then beta 1 on August 15th...), so at most 3 weeks between syncs. However, packaging GNOME modules usually takes between 1 and 5 days, so you should delay all those dates by that much. Ok thanks a lot. That is very helpfull. Este programa (bum) é para configurar a inicialização do sistema (serviços) e não para configurar programas de usuário. Para fazer o que você quer existe o Gnome Session Manager. Vá em Sistema Preferências Sessões e na aba Programas iniciais clique em Novo, escolha um nome (que vai aparecer na lista, tipo Gaim) e um comando (tipo /usr/bin/gaim). Feche o programa, saia e entre de sua seção e perceberá que o Gaim passará a inicializar. Recomendo não pôr muitos programas na inicialização pois pesa o sistema. Me surgiu uma dúvida aqui... o Ubuntu monta as unidades (/media/*) automaticamente quando no login, porém tem uma unidade que precisei formatar e que ele não monta mais automaticamente após início da sessão. Se eu escrever um script que monta e adicioná-lo nessa opção de ProgramasIniciais, antes de desligar o PC terei que desmontá-lo manualmente... Ednilson, O mesmo está ocorrendo com outros dispositivos USB (pendrive por exemplo)? Algo que talvez solucione o seu problema: possuo uma Sony DSC -S650 e acesso-a através do Digikam. O programa é simples de operar e oferece todos os recursos necessários para manipulação dos arquivos contidos na máquina. Se opto por acessá-la sem o uso do programa, o sistema reconhece-a como se fosse um pendrive. Utilizo o Kubuntu 7.04. Mas pelo simples fato de poder organizar as referências e poder salvá-las diretamente de formatos já distribuídos por algumas páginas de artigos científicos, já é uma maravilha. O problema do JabRef é que ele trabalha com estilos BibTeX, que são meio que padronizados. Ele seria ideal para trabalhar com LaTeX, com OpenOffice eu nunca usei. Mencionei o Bibus porque neste exato momento eu o estou usando para uma monografia de minha esposa e o estou achando bastante fácil de usar, apesar de alguns bugs. * Você cria e edita referências através de uma interface totalmente gráficas * Através de um clique em um botão ele insere a referência, no formato desejado, na posição atual do cursor no documento do OpenOffice. * Ele escreve as entradas da bibliografia ao final do documento Word, ordenadas alfabeticamente por autor, por ano de publicação e por título (cumulativamente) * Os parágrafos das entradas da bibliografia são formatadas segundo o estilo definido por você no Estilista (F11) * As entradas são internamente formatadas segundo estilo definido por você (no caso do Brasil, pois os estilos ABNT não estão incluídos entre os disponíveis 'out-of-the-box', pelo menos até a versão atual). Esses estilos podem ser diferentes de acordo com o tipo de publicação (article, book, etc.) e você tem atá opção de escolher tipos de publicação personalizados (CUSTOM_N). * O próprio bibus atualiza a formatação das entradas e da Bibliografia no documento do OO se você mudar dados ou estilos. * O Bibus importa referências de vários formatos: Medline, MedlineXML, Refer, Refer (Endnote), TextWindow, Endnote XML, RIS, BibTeX e ISI. * As entradas são armazenadas por padrão em uma base de dados SQLite, mas você pode também armazenar, inclusive remotamente, em um servidor MySQL. * Ele exporta para os mesmos formatos que importa, além de arquivo sqlite e HTML. * Ele imprime a base de referências com bela qualidade gráfica. Ah, já ia esquecendo: não é um programa pesadão feito em Java. É um programa pesadão feito em Python/GTK... ;-) Pelo que já li, as referências são mais utilizadas por editoração em Emacs e em LyX. [Ubuntu-BR] impressora da rede
Amigos Preciso instalar no Ubuntu uma impressora HP Laser 3030 compartilhada em um micro com o Windows XP Fiz todo o procedimento de instalação. O Ubuntu localizou a impressora na rede, me pediu o login de acesso ao micro, depois me pediu o fabricante e o modelo. emfim fez todo o passo a passo de instalação. Mas quando mando aplicar, na lista de impressoras, não aparece nenhuma impressora instalada. Alguém teria uma dica, pois sinceramente não sei onde estou errando. Valeu!!! Usa um programa pra baixar as fotos da câmera . Tem um que é muito bom só que é pra Kde , mas mesmo assim você pode instalá-lo , ele é o digikam . No Gnome (no caso , o Ubuntu) , creio que tb tenha algum programa semelhante mas não sei dizer se tb dá pra baixar fotos da câmera . Mesmo assim , acho que é o F-Spot (acho que esse é um programa a lá digikam pra Gnome , me corrijam se estiver errado) . dae iniciei o outro no linux e consegui encontrá-lo pelo findsmb, o

Olá, A Sony tem umas frescuras que nem froid explica. Usei a máquina da minha visinha e tive de configurar algumas coisas pra liberar acesso pelo cabo usb, mas vamos ao que interessa! No linux o programa certo para esse trabalho parece ser o gtakm sudo apt-get install gtkam libdc1394-13-dev Depois disso basta plugar a câmera novamente! Caso a dificuldade persista busque, pelos menus da câmera, as configurações de conexão e faça tentativas alternando entre elas. Lembro-me bem na camera da minha aminga não era a opção USB que liberava acesso por usb, vai entender... Opa Ednilson, Olá, tenho uma camera digital Sony, como faço para baixar as fotos da camera em meu ubuntu usando o cabo USB, pois conecto o cabo mas nada acontece. Se eu utilizar um lsusb é exibido o seguinte resultado: Bus 003 Device 005: ID 054c:0010 Sony Corp. DSC-S30/S70/S75/F505V/F505/FD92 Cybershot/Mavica Digital Camera Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0402:5602 ALi Corp. Mas como faço para acessar as fotos da camera? duas formas: a) com a câmera configurada em PTP, basta abrir o gthumb, f-spot gtkam ou picasa e ir na opção de importação de fotos. b) com a câmera configurada em Mass Storage, o cartão de memória será automaticamente identificado como uma unidade de armazenamento, então basta navegar nele e copiar/mover as imagens. O item (a) teria sido reconhecido como: ID 054c:004e Sony Corp. DSC-xxx (ptp) No seu caso, a câmera foi reconhecida como 054c:0010, o que corresponde ao item (b) acima. Então, caso uma nova unidade de armazenamento não tenha sido montada na sua área de trabalho, você pode ver pelo comando 'dmesg' qual o dispositivo relacionado e montar manualmente mesmo: $ sudo mount /dev/XXX /mnt/camera Onde XXX é o dispositivo mostrado pelo dmesg. Tenho um toshiba a100 qualquer coisa. *Acho* que tem que fazer uma atualização da BIOS disponivel somente pelo windows. Essa atualização, segundo lembro-me de ter lido, deve ser provida pela toshiba. Mas daí pra instalar o windows só pra fazer uma atualização da bios é osso, da 1 preguiça! até! [Ubuntu-BR] Comprar camisetas?
Oi pessoal. Eu estou indo pra um encontro na sede da Canonical no mês que vem e estava interessado em levar algumas camisetas do Ubuntu BR para dar de presente ao pessoal lá. DVD-RAM
Доброго всем времени суток! Купил на рынке DVD-RAM Memorex 4.7Gb, полагая, что он ёмкостью 9Гб, как раньше. Но не суть важно. Принёс его домой, помня что продавец предупредил не писать его Nero, отформатировал виндой в FAT32 (другую ФС из гуя выбрать не позволило), записал на него и принёс её на работу. Вставляю в привод, а он практически сразу диск выплёвывает. Думал, может в Ubuntu Feisty нет поддержки, так нет - дак коллеге, что всё ещё под Mac OS сидит - тоже болт! Прочитался только на макбуке под виндой XP Pro Sp2. При том писаться не хотел ни в какую. На выходных повторил эксперимент: записал заново и отнёс товарищу диск. У него тоже привод DVD-RAM Asus (модель не помню), WinXP Sp2. Результат тот же. Пишу под макосью: $ drutil list Vendor Product Rev Bus SupportLevel 1 PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06 Q609 ATAPI Apple Shipping Дома LG GSA-4167BB. Как в линуксе обстоят дела с поддержкой DVD-RAM? монтирование логическ ого куска диска при старте системы
Уважаемые, с линуксом пока дружу недавно, столкнулся со сложностью; система установлена на один кусок диска, второй отдан под файловый архив, нужно чтобы второй кусок диска монтировался при загрузке системы. Как это правильно сделать? прописал в fstab: # /dev/sda2 UUID=f7fe1ec5-bdf8-47cb-893f-d5091373ca76 /media/disk fat32 defaults 0 0 результато не дало что не так и куда еще нужно что вписать, чтобы заработало? заранее огромное спасибо!
