[ubuntu-art] Kyūdō: Audience and Message
Hi! I will assume that the lack of replies to my last post means that there's nothing to add or change there now ;) On to the next point! = Why Audience and Message? = The presentation, like any act, conveys a message even if you don't care about it. That would be to take a risk instead of an opportunity. If you do care about the message, you have to think about the recipient. You don't talk to a 12 year old girl the same as you do to a 61 year old man. If you work on art without a documented audience, you are still very likely to make a number of assumptions regarding your recipients. Such hidden assumptions are detrimental to cooperation on artwork. The target audience for artwork doesn't need to be identical to the entire audience for Ubuntu as such. The attempt to target everyone implies an audience of just average people. No single person is average, though. Especially geographically ;) So here we need a strategy. I propose: = Who do we want to attract next? = Trendsetters who will lead others to follow. People who are visible in their computer use. Those who have interesting capabilities to add to our community. Those who have the glamour we would like for Ubuntu itself. Young web-savvy professionals. --- Do you have an alternative proposal? If not: What are the conclusions we have to draw here? What further assumptions can we make about such an audience? What kind of a world do they live in? What do they like and enjoy? What is it that would get them hooked on Ubuntu? Finally: What shall be our message? What adjectives do we want to express? What kind of a story should we try to tell? So we are targetting the same people as Apple. That's a good thing, coz we can't be wrong if we and the apple engineers agree. Why do the current young web-savvy professionals use Mac? Mac gives them what they want in a gorgeus box. We can give them the same (or better)... for free, and that's why they may choose us over Mac They look for something easy yet powerful. We can deliver this. We *are* delivering this right now. (Altought Ubuntu isn't as perfect as Mark wants...) They also need to get their job done. Ubuntu Linux provides you with OpenOffice so you can start to work right out of the box. People who need PS or other third party software can run it through wine or dualboot. This is not our fault, is Adobe's. This people may want to play games. What games do they like? I don't know.. And they also want to create movies about their holidays, friends, etc We don't have any easy to use (Think on Win Movie Maker or iMovie) video editing software on Ubuntu. (Hint: Canonical should put money here) We can give them the same (or better)... for free, and that's why they may choose us over Mac. So we need: -Vid editor -Third party office support(PS, After Effects, AutoCad..) [ubuntu-art] Mood Boards and Portraits
Hi! So after lots of text, lets try something else ;) Please contribute mood boards and paintings about what Ubuntu is about, what it means and how you feel about it. Refer to the word, the distribution, the project, the community as you see fit :) As for artistic means, anything goes! The goal here is to develop an understanding for both the answer to these questions and ways to express them. We would also like to see portraits of personas. Personas are detailed exemplary members of a user or target group. Complete with name, character traits and whatever you can think of. But here I actually have artistic takes without much or any text in mind. How would these personas like to see themselves, what visual style would surround them? Don't worry about refinement and artistry, these shouldn't take that much time and can be pretty rough. Scanned drawings or glued noodles, tablet drawings or mouse doodles are all OK. Choose whatever size suits you, just keep in mind that the result should land on the wiki and be easy to view there. Put them directly on the wiki (preferably), or send them my way. Please declare your work to be freely distributable and allow derivatives. Best done by using a CC license like http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ Or even releasing to the Public Domain. I know this makes collages problematic which is sad, but we don't want to run into trouble here, as this should be a base for further work. Hello, there seems to be some discussion over at the forums about there not being a default theme, and the references used are the Kyudo Guidelines Mindset page and that the art deadline that just passed today. I also found this somewhat confusing but i read the new wiki page at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MobileTeam/Mobile/History which has cleared things up Just to clarify things further. I am a Samsung Q1 ultra user and I have been using Ubuntu-Mobile since the initial release with reasonable success and a whole lot of complaints -- worst being the inability to suspend and hibernate. I am not really a developer, although, I hope to be useful as a tester and provide bug-reports and feedback. I guess it is time to try one of the new images. So, now there are two editions out there: ubuntu-MID ubuntu-mobile Both appear suitable for Samsung Q1. One is GNOME based which I kind of like because of familiarity but I was getting used to Hildon too. My questions are then: 1 - Can I upgrade from existing installation? If so, is it a dist-upgrade like regular ubuntu? Is it going to create troubles? (I have some amount of customization but not too much). 2 - Which of the two would work better on Samsung Q1? I donot care too much about video, webcam etc. I mostly want to use this as a note-taking (both via an external keyboard and via the touch screen -- using xournal), internet (mainly to check e-mail on the go and some web-sites), storage, pdf-viewer, projection/presentation. Also, are there people here interested in customizing this for scientific use? I totally agree with Steve's renaming suggestion. It makes a lot of sense to target this to the UMPC and Netbook markets. Also most Netbooks are going up to 10 so why stop at 9? I think that your naming policy ATM is very confusing. How is the Ubuntu Netbook Remix related to this 7-9 device edition? From my perspective this is the true Ubuntu Netbook Edition. You should probably rename the Netbook Remix to something else or consolidate. Having read the Wiki now: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MobileTeam/Mobile/History the details are clear. I guess anyone joining the community know isn't going to have a problem. It was just that I always had the Moblin builds as 'Ubuntu Mobile' in my head. Which is, in fact, more confusing that the terminology that has been chosen now. The new naming makes sense: *Ubuntu Mobile* for UMPC's and netbooks. (Ubuntu+Gnome) *Ubuntu MID* for MIDs (Moblin+Hildon) All created by the Ubuntu Mobile team. It appears then that netbook remix is no more. Correct? It was interesting to read that Ubuntu Mobile might include support for Silverthorne/Poulsbo-based devices, which include MIDs. I think its a great idea. The only Poulsbo-based device i have myself is the Kohjinsha SC3 which is a 7 device running Vista and it badly needs Ubuntu Mobile! Trying to boot a Samsung Q1 (non-Ultra) with a Ubuntu Mobile flashed USB
Hi, I have downloaded both September 23rd and 25th images of Ubuntu Mobile from here and http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-mid/intrepid/, after following the instructions here http://people.ubuntu.com/%7Eogra/mobile/, I haven't been able to boot my Samsung Q1 (note it is not an Ultra version). As I was said it should work both in Ultra an non-Ultra versions of the UMPC, I thought I wouldn't have any problem at all, but that's not the case. I've set the BIOS booting priorities properly and I've checked the two images in 3 different devices (2 laptops and the UMPC) and all terminals and images have the same problem: instead of booting Ubuntu a blinking cursor appears in the top left corner of the screen, no activity at all, neither in the USB nor in the UMPC (I have waited for more than 15 minutes...). Should I have any special USB key to make it boot? Any help would be much appreciated as I'm quite interested in developing and testing under this platform. If needed more info, please, tell me. I'm using 'dd' in a Ubuntu 8.04 box. The blinking cursor appears with a SanDisk Cruzer Micro (4GB) USB key. I have just tried with a Kingston Datatraveler (2GB) and, instead of the blinking cursor, I got a No bootable partition in table message. Any additional steps to prepare the bootable USB key? I wasnt able to get the image to boot from a Q1b last bight as the BIOS doesn't seem to support it. THe Q1b is a VIA-based device but maybe the BIOS is simlar in that it doesnt allow booting from flash. I might be able to try it on a Q1P later today for you. For reference, Q1U, Wibrain, SC3, Everun Note, MSI Wind all boot OK from the same flash image.(ALthough maybe not work 100%) Steve. I beg to differ. I think that the whole wiki site is totally confusing on top of still having references to the Remix edition. Your planned categories of products and their target markets/devices should be at the top wiki view. I assume that the image works 100% in a Samsung Q1 Ultra (any 'special' USB key used?), but I also thought that, as Ubuntu Mobile is now multiarchitecture (regarding CPU) and different from Ubuntu MID (based in Moblin and Intel's Atom CPUs and similar architectures), it should work in all devices where Ubuntu desktop edition (standard from Canonical) works. Please, correct me if I missed something and I'm wrong. I understand that it doesn't work because of BIOS and bootable USB compatibility in the Samsung Q1 (mine is model NP-Q1-M000), but why the errors are different from one USB key (blinking cursor) to another (missing bootable partition message)? Any piece of advice will be much appreciated. Poulsbo support in Ubuntu Mobile?
Obviously Ubuntu-MID will have support for Poulsbo/SCH but what about the bigger devices using Silverthorne/Poulsbo. Ubuntu-MID doesnt really, er, 'fit'! KJS have a couple of big screen devices. Viliv are working on two. Wibrain and even Dell who will have a 12 netbook using Silverthorne Poulsbo. Windows XP works of course but SCH drivers are primitive. Video codec support is a nightmare as is finger fiendlyness on the touch devices. Vista is simply too much for most of these devices. Ubuntu-Mobile fits in well and could generate some serious dev. interest. How difficult would it be to build in the Poulsbo drivers from Ubuntu-MID at an early stage so I can present it to the UMPC/Netbook community as something they SHOULD be getting involved in? Hi all, I have already localised MSWLogo (Windows Logo) into Kannada ( http://www.vishvakannada.com/KannadaLogo) Now I am trying to localise Kturtle into Kannada. I installed Kturtle in Ubuntu. I did translate some of the important commands in Kturtle.po into Kannada and put the file in /locale/kn folder. But I could not see Kannada under settings. How do I go about with my task? What are the step-by-step procoess of localising any application in Ubuntu? TiA. Kubuntu team maintains all KDE applications in Ubuntu and that is how you have KTurtle in Ubuntu. The KDE version of it is the upstream for the application and hence the procedures should still work in any GNU/Linux distribution having KDE. Am not sure whether merely replacing the l10n file from the one installed by the KTurtle package might work, you might need to compile from source and try it out. Hi was wondering what software would enable me to see a layered eps file. Then Cesare's script checks it, and for those packages having one maintainer, it lists it in the page, perhaps not displaying the comment field. Do you mean the WeeklyTODO wiki? I've used it in the team for some time and don't like it very much. Installed from USB stick now can only but *from* the USB stick
Sorry for the long and technical post. I installed Ubuntu Intrepid Alpha 6 on my new Dell 910 netbook. To do this, I used a USB memory stick with the mini.iso on it and installed by sucking the packages from the net. I did it this way rather than using a full disk image because I use approx to cache packages. The install went quite well however, I have now noticed that I need to have the USB stick in the USB port and manually select to boot from it if I actually want Ubuntu to boot up. If I didn't do it this way, it would simply try and network boot, ignoring the hard disk completely. I have since set the 'boot' flag on the HDD using GParted and it at least tries to boot from that HDD now, but complains that there is no valid Operating System. Looking at my drives, the USB stick is recognised as /dev/sdb and the HDD is /dev/sda as you would expect. /dev/sda does have a proper boot folder etc. The only real anomoly I can see is that in the file /boot/grub/menu.lst the 'root' option for each menu entry is set to '(hd1,0)'. Is this normal? Any ideas of how to fix this problem. If I need to re-install, I can do that now I have all the packages cached but I would rather not. Pessoal, instalei o flashplugin beta 10. Realmente ficou melhor, aparentemente o firefox ficou mais estável. Agora esta utilizando em média 40% de cpu. Vou testar mais por um tempo e posto aqui como está. Obrigado a todos. 2008/9/24 hamacker [EMAIL PROTECTED]: A primeira vez que experimentei o beta do flash10 dava lag a torta e direta, hoje resolví experimentar de novo e para a minha surpresa tá fluindo bem. O comportamento das sobreposicoes parece estar resolvida, abri varias abas em flash (sem o flashblock) e ainda não travou. Talvez seja cedo para dizer, mas tá melhor que o flash9 que convenhamos se ainda não travou com voce então ainda vai travar/crashar. Comigo é a mesma coisa, além de roubar mem/cpu, o flash9 dá uma instabilidade incrivel ao FF, tanto que o flash9 já deveria vir com o flashblock juntos. [Ubuntu-BR] Só eu fiquei sem rede hoje pela manh ã ?
Hoje vos falo do Windows, Estava a uma semana usando o Ubuntu Intrepid, e até ontém a noite minha placa de rede (uma intel gigabit onboard) funcionava numa boa. Antes de dormir, fiz a ultima atualização - no intrepid são diarias. Pois bem, hoje pela manhã a placa de rede insiste em não ser detectada. Primeiro me apavorei porque já tinha lido antes um serio bug envovendo o kernel 2.6.27 (intrepid e outras distros) e placas gigabit da intel onde o tal bug poderia até mesmo danificar permanentemente a placa. A minha outra partição que contem o Windows Vista que estava virgem até então e era mantido tão somente por causa da garantia do notebook foi meu salvador, entrei pelo Windows e pude notar que minha placa de rede não queimou/espatifou/explodiu ou coisa do genero. Minha conjectura é que o time de atualização do Ubuntu providenciou desativar essa placa de rede por causa do sério bug, se isso realmente ocorreu, além de mim, deve haver outras pessoas offline que usem a rede com fios, estou certo ? Alguem aí experimentou o mesmo problema ? [Ubuntu-BR] Funcionou - quem tem note CCE e não muda de resolução no UBUNTU
Caros Amigos, Gostaria de confirmar a solução que o colega do Viva o Linux deu para que a resolução de tela aceitasse mais do que 800x600. Tenho um CCE linha Win - w55. Testei pelo Live CD do Ubuntu e fechei a sessão e voltei, ele respeitou a nova resolução que escolhi no displayconfig-gtk, ou seja 1280x800. Valeu galera! O AVIdemux é show de bola, melhor até que o Super 2008 que eu usava no Ruindows. Mas um problema ainda persiste: como converter meus animes diretamente do formato rmvb para o mp4 do PSP? O AVIdemux não aceitou que eu abrisse o rmvb pra poder converter... Tente pelo terminal, usando o mencoder (se não tiver, instale-o): $ sudo mencoder video.rmvb -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -o video_de_saida.mp4 Num sei se funciona... mas se funcionar, diz para a gente!!! Pq somente escolhendo o vídeo, escolhendo PSP no menu Auto e mandando salvar, o PSP diz que não pode reproduzir o vídeo... Obrigado. No caso do avidemux eu utilizo uma versão diferente dos repositórios. Mas no caso do RMVB é como eu disse, o resultado é porco, eu tenho uma coleção dos cavaleiros do zodiaco que tá nesse formato, e sempre que tento converter, converte bem, mas desincroniza a fala. Porém, segundo o synaptic o mencoder estah instalado, e se entro mencoder no terminal ele me retorna as infos do comando e me alerta que nenhum arquivo foi dado e fecha, ou seja, aparenta estar instalado normalmente. Voce conhece alguma GUI pro mencoder? Use o avidemux, ao abrir um video, configure o botao VIdeo para o formato de destino desejado e entao clique em filters e adicione um filtro chamado subtitller, com ele voce vai especificar a fonte/cor/altura da fonte. É muito fácil, só tome cuidado porque ele tem a mania de sugerir fonte no lugar errado, aqui ele indicou a fonte /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/arial.ttf quando deveria ser /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/arial.ttf. No avidemux voce encontra muitas opcoes a perder de vista, onde voce pode melhorar um pouco a qualidade dos videos. Eu já convertí videos de cassetes para dvd e tive a grata surpresa de melhorar um pouco o aspecto de cor/volume e mascarar um pouco os defeitos da fita k7. O avidemux é uma mão na roda. Eu dou novo boot em recovery mode e executo a recuperação do X server, ai entro em modo gráfico só que com resolução 800x600. Meu notebook, como já disse é um SempToshiba IS1522. [Ubuntu-BR] Atualizacao para o 8.10
Fala pessoal. Tentei fazer a atualizacao do 8.04 para o 8.10 pelo update manager, seguindo o q é dito no próprio site do ubuntu. Após umas 4 horas fazendo downloads, quando os downloads terminaram eu recebi uma mensagem de erro, informando que uns 4 pacotes (não lembro exatamente quantos e nem quais) não haviam sido encontrados, e simplesmente cancelou a atualização! Eu vi quais eram os pacotes, e acredito que não eram pacotes necessários para o sistema (um ...cups... estava no meio, não acredito que pacotes como esse sejam impressindiveis para a instalação). Existe como fazer a atualização ignorando esses pacotes? E existe algum lugar onde eu possa reportar isso como um bug? Seria muito, muito mais bacana se eu recebesse essa mensagem no momento em que o pacote não foi encontrado, e não depois de fazer o download de todos os pacotes. Minha conjectura é que o time de atualização do Ubuntu providenciou desativar essa placa de rede por causa do sério bug, se isso realmente ocorreu, além de mim, deve haver outras pessoas offline que usem a rede com fios, estou certo ? Alguem aí experimentou o mesmo problema ? Minha conjectura é que o time de atualização do Ubuntu providenciou desativar essa placa de rede por causa do sério bug, se isso realmente ocorreu, além de mim, deve haver outras pessoas offline que usem a rede com fios, estou certo ? Alguem aí experimentou o mesmo problema ? [Ubuntu-BR] Resolução no CCE W52
Bonan nokton, samideanojn! Estou com um pequeno problema aqui. Finalmente comprei um laptop, um CCE Win W52, totalmente excelente para mim. Instalei, depois de apanhar valendo do vídeo, o Hardy. O LCD está agora a 800x600 e não sei como mudar para 1024x768, ou 1280x800 que é a maior resolução que ele suporta. Já encontrei algumas soluções que funcionaram para outros mas não para mim. Resolveu meu problema. Muito obrigado, hamacker. 2008/9/25 hamacker [EMAIL PROTECTED] Use o avidemux, ao abrir um video, configure o botao VIdeo para o formato de destino desejado e entao clique em filters e adicione um filtro chamado subtitller, com ele voce vai especificar a fonte/cor/altura da fonte. É muito fácil, só tome cuidado porque ele tem a mania de sugerir fonte no lugar errado, aqui ele indicou a fonte /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/arial.ttf quando deveria ser /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/arial.ttf. No avidemux voce encontra muitas opcoes a perder de vista, onde voce pode melhorar um pouco a qualidade dos videos. Eu já convertí videos de cassetes para dvd e tive a grata surpresa de melhorar um pouco o aspecto de cor/volume e mascarar um pouco os defeitos da fita k7. O avidemux é uma mão na roda.
