[ubuntu-art] Early Breathe Submissions

2008-09-29 Thread Thorsten Wilms
Hi!

We now have 3 items on the submissions page, all thanks to Sebastian
Porta.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/BreatheIconSet/Submissions

After talking with Cory, we decided that it's best if all submissions
there are also announced to the list, so they can be discussed in the
open. It's also a good idea to join us on IRC, #ubuntu-artwork.

I already provided feedback to the artist on the first user-trash and
the dictionary and don't want to repeat it here now.

Cory and I are quite happy about the user-trash2. It provides a good
impression of depth in the large size. This could perhaps be improved
for smaller size by making the inner wall darker.

The recycling logo is very nice on the large size, but perhaps the arrow
heads need to stand out a bit more for smaller sizes.

The shading on the main body gives a good impression of half-matt
plastic. The border on the top is less convincing. Maybe it's just the
lack of a shadow beneath it.

The base of the bin needs to be darker. The rounded edge above the base
would benefit from a smooth darker gradient.

I'm not sure about the color, as I think we should avoid making
everything orange, but we could get back it after other icons are in.
We will likely need a few iterations, anyway.

Cory was already willing to place it on the accepted icon page. With a
few tweaks as mentioned above, I will agree :)

Actually I think more /material/ options should be explored. If this
is a realistic theme we should be thinking about what type of plastic,
wood, metal or whatever it is, rather than what colour it is - right?

There are only seven movie editors I can find. Cinelerra may be
professional, but it has nowhere near the potential that the easy interface
of Windows Movie Maker had. The only thing that is Gnome-based and that
seems to have a nice interface is Kino, and it *doesn't even have a
timeline. *How are you supposed to make a movie without a timeline?

The only other program that does have a timeline is Kdenlive, but it's for
KDE and for some reason crashes whenever I use it. Plus there hasn't been an
update since 2007, and the latest news is from June 26, 2008.

The new version was scheduled for release in March. And the year is almost
through. It's definitely time for a new movie editor, one that has all the
functionality of Kdenlive and the usability of Kino.

FYI Kino is KDE based, not Gnome based. Have you tried Pitivi? It has a
good time line, a very intuitive interface.
It is lacking in features, but what it does do it does right. There is no
need for a *new* movie editor, because
when Pitivi gets there it will what most people want from a video editor.

It's outside the scope of Kyu-do-. I separated it off to another thread

Re: [ubuntu-art] Early Breathe Submissions

2008-09-29 Thread Danny King
Here is my suggestion for the generic paper icon

Some notes first:

* I have only done the 256px size so far. Smaller sizes would have
/much/ less detail (the left side would be simplified if included at
all, the shadows would be darkened perhaps)
* I have included a textured and a non-textured version. The texture
was from Inkscape's built in patterns and is a bitmap so not
desirable. I tried to trace another texture bitmap but it got far too
complex and Inkscape crashed.
* I'm not 100% sure about my shadows.
* I won't attach the SVG yet as I've only done the 256px size and I've
messed around with the layers - I need clean it up.
* I welcome critiques and won't be offended if you don't think it fits
in with Breathe!

user-trash2, totally agree on that, looks awesome! no more cheap gloss.
(the analogy between the recycling logo and ubuntu logo is striking :-)

i have a question on the dictionary icon: why is it presented from such
a sideways angle, unlike the trash? i think you should keep consistent
here, and the frontal view of the trash is just perfect. (i know that
osx abandoned their pseudo-3d-angle icons because of cover-flow, and we

Audio support in last Ubuntu Mobile image

2008-09-29 Thread Javier Gálvez Guerrero
Hi all,

I have been testing the last Ubuntu Mobile image in a Samsung Q1 (non-Ultra,
just live session) and HDD-installed in an Asus R2E (live session tested as
well).

Regarding sound, SQ1 has no issues with that, while Asus R2E doesn't play
any sound at all, neither in files nor testing through Audio configuration
(tested in both live session and HDD OS).

lspci command shows different results although both are Intel devices. Then,
as I am not a hardware (nor a software..xD) expert, I post it to the mailing
list just to ask for some help.

In SQ1 audio line in lspci: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation
82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev
03)
In AR2 audio line in lspci: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G
(ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02).

So, that difference in hardware is supposed to be the cause of not getting
any sound, isn't it?
What should I do in order to get it working?
Will next releases support this hardware natively?

Thanks,
Javi

2008-09-29 Thread M. Emin Akşehirli
Merhaba,

 Merhaba,

Firefox yavaş derken tam olarak neyi kastediyorsunuz acaba? Yavaşlık
sorununu biraz daha açabilirseniz daha kolay yardımcı olabiliriz
 sanıyorum. Örneğin;

If you use the ISO, then in that case also the Synaptic gets updates
IMHO. Writing to CD has just the benefit that it gets detected as a repo
and is imported automatically. Good for newbies.

Synaptic can not detect ISO automatically.
You have to mount the ISO using loopback ex. mount -t iso9660 -o loop
/path/to/file.iso /media/somefolder'
Then you have to add a line in /etc/apt/sources.list corresponding to
this mounted iso.
ex. deb file:///media/somefolder hardy main restricted

Ramnarayan,

You need to type
sudo pppoeconf

in the terminal and answer the few questions asked there. When entering
the password, take care that it shows up as plain text.
You will get an option to Start the connection at boot time.If you
select it , the system keeps constantly polling the interface, when you
plug in the ethernet, wait for a few second and it will be connected.
Check ifconfig to see the connection being shown up as ppp0.

If you want to start the connection manually and dont want to use
Start the connection at boot time, then use the commands
sudo pon dsl-provider to start
AND
sudo poff dsl-provider to stop

Dont use the above two commands if you have selected Start the
connection at boot time, or else two ppp interfaces are created and
internet stops working.

Thanks,

Much simpler solution - Ask BSNL to set the Modem up to connect by
itself and run DHCP on the modem. Thus all you need is to allow your
modem to connect and then turn your computer ON; then there is no worry
of configuring and your Ubuntu will dynamically get an IP. Configuring
the modem to connect automatically has nothing do with what OS you have
in your computer, as least from what I know of BSNL.

Well Parthan,

The BSNL modem which we get runs in bridged mode, I dont know what
bridged mode actually is, but one needs to dial-up to connect to the
internet. I tried doing many nasty things in the router admin panel, but
nothing worked.
The router is set the assign the IP through DHCP itself, one never needs
to assign it, just only after we connect through username and password,
one can use the net. Till that time, only people can be connected
through LAN provided by the router.

You are right. You can change the mode form admin UI of the router.
You should put it in PPPoE and make your life easier.
Also one needs to start the DHCP server on the router, because BSNL
routers come with DHCP off by default.

@Ramnarayan,
If you don't want to setup DHCP on the router you can follow the
instructions at
http://ubuntu-in.info/wiki/index.php/Broadband_Howto#Ethernet_Connection
If you set up DHCP server on router, skip steps 1-4.

If you want to make it work exactly as it is being done from Windows,
simply use command 'sudo pppoeconf'. If I remember correctly, network
manager applet should allow you to dial the dsl-provider connection
from UI. Otherwise you can do it from terminal using 'pon
dsl-provider' and 'poff dsl-provider'. Another option you have is to
set it to dial automatically at system bootup.

 Adam

Hi Adam,

I have been chasing the organisers of the expo, quite regularly. There
is a slight snag, the organisers of the event are insisting that any
community stand in the .org village that is based around a commercial
product, or commercialised of sorts has the company also in the main
floor. I agree this policy absolutely stinks in our case, however I can
see their justification. The same rule was applied to OpenSUSE, as
Novell are attending, OpenSUSE are allowed on the .org village.

Now for the kicker, Canonical haven't yet decided if they want to attend
on the main floor. This is at least as recent as before the weekend, as
I last spoke with Canonical's marketing director on Friday.

I have attempted to get us a position regardless of Canonical's
attendance, however the organisers at this stage are refusing. I think
they may review their rule as it gets closer. I'm 'pretty' confident
we'll be there regardless, even if we end up paying to be on the main
floor ;)

Kind Regards,
Dave Walker

Dell seemed to have missed the Cheap part of this Small-Cheap-Computers thing.

I bought a number of 701's. whilst I agree they are nifty little units,
the actual build quality or finish is not as nice as the ones that are
coming to the market now, such as Acer Aspire One and Dell Mini 9.

The price difference isn't huge, and I would argue it's worth it,
although each to their own :). I can't quite condone getting another
ultra portable laptop as the 701's do the job, but I would like to
replace with the newer ones.

Kind Regards,
Dave Walker

Hopefully Ill be able to do both but if not which would be the better?

Any other advice would be great.

I noticed that, they seem to be creeping up in price and spec. The 701 seems
just right to me, 4GB internal storage, half a GB of RAM. All for somewhere
around £150.

[ubuntu-uk] [Fwd: Intrepid Release Parties]

2008-09-29 Thread John Levin

So, anyone up for a party?

John

 Original Message

Hi all,

Ladies and Gentleman who love and adore the world most lovable and
adorable Operating System, Ubuntu, we plan on releasing Ubuntu 8.10
Intrepid Ibex on October 30th. Now, this release is a pretty special
release because not only do we kick out another kick-ass Ubuntu, but
October 20th is Ubuntu’s 4th birthday!

As such, it is time to par-taaay. Seriously. The Beastie Boys faught for
your right to partaaay, so show some dignity and respect to these
rights, and get out there and do it.

So, what is the skinny, I hear you ask? Well, I think it is time for us
to put our collective minds together and organise an incredible series
of release parties all over the world. On our last release, we had over
60 parties, largely organised by our incredible worldwide LoCo
community, and I would love to see us hit nearer to 100 parties for this
release, particularly with a birthday to celebrate!

Organising a party is pretty simple:

Pick a date - I would recommend either Thu 30th October or the following
weekend…Sat 1st Nov and Sun 2nd Nov. Pick a date when you can arrange
for a bunch of Ubuntu enthusiasts to be in the same building.
Pick a venue - this can be someone’s back yard, a pub, a university
room, a school, a parking lot…wherever. They key thing is not the venue,
it is the people. With a venue and date, you are all set to let the
world know about it.
Add your party to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseParties - this
is the big list of Ubuntu release parties. :)
Let the world know - blog about it, make up some fliers and put them in
computers shops / libraries / cafes / educational establishments etc.
Encourage a stack of people to come along to your party. :)

We have a longer guide to organising a release party at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BuildingCommunity/RunningReleaseParty. You can
also discuss organising your party on the ubuntu-event-planners mailing
list (https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/Ubuntu-event-planners).

When it comes to running your party, there are a bunch of things you can
do on the day/evening itself:

   * Have a cake - it is a birthday, after all! If you can’t bake a
cake, find someone who can. :)
   * Hang out with other Ubuntu people, meet new faces and get to
 know each other.
   * You may want to perform installfests.
   * You may also want to organise a few talks and speeches for the
 event itself.
   * Why not make some merchandise to give out? Maybe some badges,
 stickers or t-shirts?

Enjoy, and do post here when you organise a party!

Jono

Will there be more cake? Count me in for the party. I expect someone on
here will suggest the Pembury Tavern as the location but it's not the
most accessible place as it's not near a tube station. I vote +1 for De

Sorry to spoil the party as such but i vote for the Pembury Arms, last time
there was a wicked atmosphere cake, food all the usual suspects for a party,
but for me the thing that swings it, is plenty of space, ( and socket outlets
) for an installfest. So thats 2 votes for this venue, me + 1 other. cheers!

Agreed - De Hems was great.

My only concern is that it was too small, perhaps we should reserve
the entire first floor this time?

Is the publicity for this release going to be as huge as it was for
8.04 LTS, given that 8.10 is not an LTS release? If not then we could
probably get away with just half the first floor again.

This time I'll try to have more realistic driving-in-London

Notes from the August meeting:
http://dfey.freedomdreams.co.uk/wiki/August_Meeting/Notes

=== Meeting ===

We have switched venues from The Waterhouse, to Marbella Cafe - a very
interesting place in the Northern Quarter where Manchester Free Space
recently set up a community LTSP cluster.
This seems a very appropriate location for a group of our nature. In
addition, I can vouch for the cheap, *very nice* food and extremely
friendly staff.

We will have an strong wifi connection so hopefully we can avoid the
issues from the last meeting!

This creates the possibility that we could broadcast the meeting over
VOIP... an interesting thought at least.

Due to some people having had difficulty finding the Marbella in the
past, I suggest we meet *upstairs* not far from KFC at Piccadilly train
station at about 12pm (look for geeks, laptops, t-shirts, signs saying
DFEY, stickers etc.) Once everyone has arrived, we will then move on
to Marbella.
We aim to have finished by about 4pm.

To make sure everyone is at the station before we move on to the venue,
it would help if you could sign up at our eventwax page here:

If you think a contact number might be helpful on the day, email me and
I will sort one out :)

DFEY-NW (Digital Freedom in Education and Youth) is a group formed in
response from a growing need in the Northwest of England for a Group to
encourage and promote young people's involvement with the free software
community by creating a social space to make it more comfortable for
young people to get involved with GLUGs and FSUGs.

In Exeter assuming we got the centre up and running in time. I'll sent

[ubuntu-uk] Hardware failure?

2008-09-29 Thread Seif Attar
Hello,

I have had problems with ubuntu freezing on gutsy and it's still
freezing with hardy, thought it was x64 problem, so i switched to x32
ubuntu, but it's still crashing! then i realised it might not be ubuntu
at all. so I ran a memtest, that froze as well, I assume that if the
memtest froze then it's not a memory problem? otherwise it would have
detected the problem?

what else can I do to find the culprit? I tried removing all the pci
cards, it still crashed, I am trying the option noapictimer for the grub
menu, as a thread I found suggested, will see how that turns out. Next I
am going to remove one of the ram and leave one, swapping later, that
way i'll know for sure if 1 of them is broken.
any other suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? maybe benchmarking
software for ubuntu?

Thanks,
Seif A.

How old is the system?

Just thinking if it's more than a few months old it might have got a bit
clogged up with dust inside. That's worth checking, as you mention,
removing the ram is a good idea. Does it free quickly or is it after an
extended amount of time?

Also make sure the things like CPU fans and any fans on the video card
are working okay. You might be able to get the CPU and case
temperatures from your BIOS, if so how high is it immediately after a
freeze? (It shouldn't go down by much if you reboot it straight after a
freeze).

Hi,

It could be a memory issue still but lets not go down that road at
present.

Have you been inside the machine to make sure all hardware is correctly
inserted and seated?

The next thing is to check if a specific app is normally running when
the machine freezes or give us as best description of what happens i.e.
After a long time running, can you dump back to failsafe terminal out of
X, is the mouse still working after freeze etc. Be descriptive! :-)

those home built machines, so think cheapest parts possible! :)

it's a core2quad with 2 gigs of ram, nvidia 8800gt. The symptoms have
changed since it first started. before it used to freeze, no mouse
moving, no keyboard, sysrq doesnt work, but display showing last app

apps open when the crash happens (e.g. mythtv) i do get something in the
logs, see attached file with different data from different days, logs
dont always get written to, these messages keep repeating in the logs.

I don't know if any1 can make anything of those things. but the freezes
are completely random! they happen while i am working on the machine, or
if i come back after leaving it for a few hours, no matter what apps are
running. seriously frustrating.

I had checked the temperatures at some point, dont remember what it was,
but after googling i found it's normal for a stock fan (somewhere in the
50s), no dust on the fans, all hardware well attached.
getting a new video card tomorrow, as the fan on the one i have is quite
noisy, and that throws one of the suspects away!

Hi Seif,

Do you know if the HD is SATA or IDE? I had a similar problem, random
lockups,
system totally non-responsive, reset the only way to get the system back
up. I
tried swapping out all my hardware with no solution until I install the
system onto
an old IDE drive I had, the SATA drive was fine, in fact my system runs
on it now
so I figured it might have been a chipset driver issue (or not?) Either
way changing
from a SATA drive to an IDE drive solved it for me.

Hope this helps,

Brian.

On the subject of hard drives - it could well be a dodgy hard drive,
particularly if it's a cheap one, try using a live CD for a while - it'd be
the easiest way to test without fiddling with hardware, if that works fine,
It'll very probably be the hard drive, and it'll need replacing.

Upgrade to Intrepid Alpha6

2008-09-29 Thread Storm Dragon
Hi,
I upgraded to Intrepid last night. The strange thing is, I ended up
having to manually upgrade ubuntu-desktop and gnome-orca after
everything was finished. I am not sure why they didn't upgrade along
with everything else. So far, everything is working great except Orca
seems to skip somethings when arrowing through menus at first, I thought
I was just hitting the button twice, but it happens more often than
would account for something like that.
Also, was wondering if the log in music has changed for Ubuntu? It
almost seems like I am getting the standard Gnome music but I am not
sure.

Are you with iiNet dialup? If not, you should be concerned about

If you're not already doing so, you should consider switching your
standard Ubuntu updates to use the iiNet mirror. To do this:

1. Open System - Administration - Software Sources from the main menu
2. enter your password
3. Select the Download from drop-down and choose other
5. Select ftp.iinet.net.au under the Australia subheading

2008-09-29 Thread Timo Jyrinki
2008/9/28 Matthew East [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
To try to minimise future problems, could it be considered for
communications between Rosetta and Ubuntu to be done on this list?
Ubuntu is a community project and unless there is a good reason to do
things privately (maybe there was in this case, I don't know), I think
that using this list is probably the best way to avoid
misunderstandings, because more eyes will see the mails.

I agree. Launchpad's Rosetta people, please communicate and discuss on
the ubuntu-translators list.

Jeroen gave a good description of some of the problems a few days ago
on launchpad-users:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/launchpad-users/2008-September/004235.html

Launchpad-users is a moderated list, and my post from three days ago
is still not visible. I'd like to re-iterate a part of it:
---
As the KDE4 pot:s seem to be imported now (though po files not yet),
there's only 132 Needs review pot:s queued. Of those, I'd like to
point out this one:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+source/app-install-data-ubuntu/+imports

...just because being able to translate those entries in
gnome-app-install would be a major l10n improvement in intrepid.
---

That is: translators, if you see app-install-data-ubuntu becoming
available (it still isn't), translate! It will patch up a rather
visible i18n problem seen by everyone eg. installing codecs via
gnome-app-install. The problem and the current fix were discussed at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/app-install-data-ubuntu/+bug/254628
which I reported two months ago.

ubuntu-docs updates for translation into Intrepid

2008-09-29 Thread Ricardo Pérez López
Hi,

I can see that Intrepid's ubuntu-docs templates hasn't been updated
since Hardy. For example, the following string still says New to Ubuntu
8.04? in Intrepid template:

https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+source/ubuntu-docs/+pots/newtoubuntu/es/27/+translate

When will be the ubuntu-docs templates updated in Intrepid, so we (the
translators) could translate them before Intrepid release? We only have
less than a month to get the documentation fully updated translated
for this release.

Thanks in advance,

retirando os pacotes do idioma do sistema.

Não. Apenas modifico o idioma padrão. No próximo login o idioma vem o que eu
quero. Posso mudar no gdm, é a mesma coisa.

Por exemplo, agora estou usando inglês.
Entretanto, necessito fazer texto em outros idiomas (português).

E o kiko?

Porque raios a seleção do
mudo o idioma padrão, muda a configuração do teclado e o cedilha (ç) eu faço

é o que melhor me atende no momento.

corretamente.

O que fiz: Coloquei umask 007 para todos os usuários (.bash_profile) e
apliquei a permissão SGID no diretório.

ACESSO VIA CONSOLE
$ mkdir teste

do nada.

Procuro a
assisteência técnica?

Obrigado,

 Custo beneficio melhor pedida

HP - Com chipset INTEL. Rapido, vc consegue instalar diversas distros.

note popular.

bonito, barato e brasileiro.. hehe..

 acessando
 ?

Seria tunelar o X via ssh.

2008-09-29 Thread Douglas Giovani Oechsler
Boa tarde amigos!

3 - HP

4 - STI - mesma coisa que Toshiba (mesma fábrica)

5 - Acer

6 - Itautec

7 - CCE

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Sobre compra de Notebooks

2008-09-29 Thread Clayton Silva Lima

100% do hardware detectado
no Ubuntu 8.0.4.1.

desempenho 3D capada (nVidia GeForce 6100).

AMD TURION 64x2 (dual core) mobile technology 1.9 ghz
3gb de memoria
nvidia geforce 7000m 128 exclusiva e 512 compartilhado
160 de hd...
entrada para cartões...
camera...
