For discussing or seeking help about a particular programming language, especially when it is a very generalized, language specific and unrelated to Ubuntu questions, it is better to be asked in the mailing list catering to that particular programming language or in a wide-topic mailing lists like LUGs. It's not just because it is not ON TOPIC here, but also because the chance of [1] getting a meaningful reply, [2] involving a discussion of people having more clue about it and [3] of the question and it's reply helping people searching for the same at future instance and finding it, is more in such a mailing list than here. If you're looking for quick reply, you should rather be jumping to #python and getting it sorted out. I have had no real problems with using the 64-bit version of Ubuntu. I too have 4 GB of RAM. I also run virtual systems in Virtual Box and VMware. If I want to run a 32-bit program that does not run in 64-bit Ubuntu, I can run it in a 32-bit virtual Ubuntu. Although some will run on 64-bit quite happily whilst for others special steps need to be taken to get them working, as with Adobe Air. Overall I am very happy with 64-bit Ubuntu. Java works too, so you would still be able to use that. I do not see why more people do not use 64-bit operating systems. The CPUs on all new PCs are now 64-bit, so why not have 64-bit OS? Especially as in Linux there are often 64-bit versions of software or otherwise there are workarounds. I think that in the Windows world there just is not much software for 64-bit Windows so people stick to 32-bit. This is where Linux triumphs over Windows. Cheers, Al. Hmmm, I guess 700MB less memory isn't going to make that much difference considering what I'll be running anyway. On the desktop I don't mind putting up with the quirks but I think on a laptop since I'll be providing remote support at the most annoying of times (usually either early in the morning i.e. 5am or late at night) then I think I'll go for the 32-bit version for now. I presume like everything once the bugs are ironed out then thinks like 64-bit Flash and Java will make their way into the next release (or the release after that). I did quickly fire up an AMD64 Live CD and I was so impressed that everything just worked. Can't say that for Vista, spent best part of 3 hours last night downloading and installing drivers (the Intel driver ACER provided was about 180MB!!!). All that hassle just to remove the crudware that was slowing it down. Curse you Microsoft with your restricted downgrade to XP rights. Re distribution if you can get it in to a format, that can be EASILY incorporated in to a webpage, (i have just html at the moment, but can embed you tube stuff. I am more than happy to have it on my website, Perhaps see if canoical can include it in /desktop/examples. the end product should be creative commons or similar surely, otherwise it looks kind of odd, on the free software community to put restrictions on it. With movies like big buck bunny being put on to dvd', again perhaps it can be tagged on to the end of future movies or included on the dvd at least. Having access to the UK Canonical HQ was problematic for a few reasons including security. However there was left open the possibility of us hiring another location. We could of course ask again if this would be possible. Alternatively I was prepared to open my house up for the bug jam in my area, however personal circumstances meant that it wasn't possible last time around. For this bug jam barring other better suggestions, I'm sure we could do that this time around too. I'd be happy to provide some wifi food and drink for the weekend if no other location can be found. I have created my live USB Ubuntu flash drive, which is certainly now bootable, so nothing wrong with the drive itself. But, it had an error when booting about not finding the linux kernel. I will have to investigate further when I have the time, but at least I know that the flash drive is bootable. But I do not see why the Ubuntu program to create a USB startup disk did not work in making the flash drive bootable, whereas the Install Live USB program which I used did make it bootable. I also noticed that this latter program divides the flash drive into two partitions, which makes more sense than the Ubuntu startup program, so that there is a main bootable partition and a second partition for the home directory and files which is persistent. Considering that anyone can make a video and put it on You Tube (unless it was illegal or something that You Tube had to remove as it was against their policy), then I think it would be a great idea if everyone tried to make a video (if they can) and post it to You Tube to promote Linux in general or just Ubuntu, and then post the link to your video here on the Ubuntu UK list and elsewhere. I think that kind of video making to promote Linux will go further than just picking one winner in a competition. Besides, I have no desire to visit Japan. Acabei de adquirir um Notebook da HP e fiz todo o processo de costume e tenho algumas dúvidas para tirar com vc. - Não estou conseguindo ver filmes direito, a imagem fica piscando constantemente em vários programas (VLC, Mplayer, Tottem, etc...); - Os nomes dos diretórios que contém caracteres especiais como (ç, ~, ' ) ect... aparecem com problemas e distorções, quando o script vai instalar fontes para o sistema ele até fala algo a respeito mas não sei como consertar isto. - E a minha web cam o sistema instala mas quando eu tento usar pelo cheese, ele não mostra imagem nenhuma e a webcam mostra o led dela como se estivesse funcionando normalmente essa web cam é reconhecida pelo sistema como HP WEBCAM. Claro que o senhor e seu script não tem responsabilidade nenhuma sobre esses problemas mas a intenção em postar estas dúvidas seria no intuito de conseguir ajuda e conselho com os mais experiêntes. Após essa operação, basta usar o nautilus para selecionar *.avi e clicar com o botão direito sobre estes e então escolher a opção Script-Converter Videos. Tem funcionado muito bem para mim, especialmente para mesclar legendas .srt ao video, e não ter que sobreviver com a péssima fonte de legenda do meu DVD Player. Boa tarde Galera, Procurei bastante sobre problemas de alguem que tenha o DELL latitude 131l com ubuntu 8.10, mas nao vi ninguem com problemas no cd-rom. Instalei faz poucos dias o 8.10 aqui e o meu cd-rom nao esta sendo reconhecido. Bem, pessoal, estou compartilhando com vocês minha experiência de dois dias como utilizador do IBM Lotus Symphony, um conjunto de aplicativos de escritório desenvolvido pela Big Blue a partir do OpenOffice.org 1.1.5 que tem sido propalado como a tentativa da IBM de voltar ao mercado de software para computadores pessoais. Em primeiro lugar, cabe ressaltar que o Lotus Symphony não é free software, mas software proprietário, de código fechadíssimo e sujeito a uma licença de uso muitíssimo restrita. Só que ele agora é freeware e vem empacotado para o Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS -- razão pela qual me animei a testá-lo, já que praticamente ninguém o fez para contar a história. O tamanho do download assusta. Os arquivos básicos têm 175 MB e a localização em português do Brasil, que inclui alguns templates, os arquivos de ajuda e a tradução da interface, são outros 100 MB Terminado o download, a instalação pode ser feita via gdebi-gtk, o que é um conforto. Todas as dependências estavam satisfeitas no meu sistema e eu desconfio que isto é porque a IBM empacotou tudo que precisava, recorrendo a muito poucas bibliotecas compartilhadas (daí o tamanho do download). Durante a instalação eu percebi que o Lotus Symphony, aparentemente, é todo escrito em Java utilizando o ambiente de desenvolvimento Eclipse. Para um programa tão grande e complexo escrito em Java ele roda muito rápido (mas isso não quer dizer que ele rode rápido, me entendam). Dentro da pasta /opt/ibm/lotus/symphony/framework tudo que você vê é uma árvore de diretórios do eclipse cheia de JARs e outros arquivos variados. Aparentemente, o Symphony inclui seu próprio ambiente java e uma distribuição do Jakarta. O que vem no pacote? Muito pouco para um programa que pretende revolucionar o mundo do software e trazer de volta do mundo dos mortos a Big Blue. Um editor de textos de interface agradável, algo semelhante à do MS Office 2007, um editor de apresentações de interface sensivelmente mais simples que o OO Impress ou o Power Point e uma planilha, que quase não cheguei a usar. Junto com ele não vem nenhum modelo de documento e apenas as fontes TrueType Monotype Sans WT, Monotype Sans WT Duospace e Thorndale Duospace WT. A última é bastante interessante, pois embora seja monoespaçada, ela tem uma elegância que a torna bem leve para ler. Gostaria de usá-la em algum livro. Por padrão (algo que eu positivamente não gostei) o Symphony seqüestrou para si a associação dos arquivos .sx* e .od*. A interface do Lotus Symphony é bastante confusa para mim, que nunca usei MS Office. Acreditem, pessoas, meu primeiro aplicativo de escritório foi o StarOffice e depois migrei para o OpenOffice 1.0 e nunca mais usei coisa alguma, nem mesmo consegui usar Abiword+Gnumeric e nem KOffice -- embora tenha tentado. Pelo que percebi, no entanto, ela não é exatamente semelhante à do MS Office 2007, o que pode significar que ela será difícil para quem vem do ambiente Windows + Office também. Vamos agora a uma lista objetiva e resumida de prós () e contras (): O Symphony usa uma interface MDI do tipo com abas, o que é muito legal se você está trabalhando com vários textos simultaneamente. +1000 pontos por isso. integra o gtk-mozembed na mesma janela do aplicativo, permitindo que você copie e cole de uma página da Web ou que passe a editá-la. +300 pontos por isso. Pela mesma razão fica mais fácil você trabalhar em um documetno enquanto navega na Web. Esta feature é muito legal para mim especificamente. + 200 pontos infelizmente ele não permite salvar de volta a página através da rede. -100 pontos. o programa travou comigo várias vezes, mesmo sendo uma versão chamada de estável (1.2). Em nenhuma das vezes ele salvou os arquivos, como o OpenOffice faz. -1200 pontos. A renderização de fontes é um problema sério para um programa proprietário e tão cheio de segredos. A qualidade das fontes é sofrível, mesmo em comparação com o OpenOffice3 que implantou hinting nativo e desabilitou anti-aliasing (duas mudanças que detestei porque fazem o texto ficar ilegível, como no Windows). Além de fontes ligeiramente borradas, o Symphony ainda deforma os caracteres das fontes em negrito, como se ele quisesse forçar as letras em negrito (que são mais gordas) dentro da mesma caixa que as letras normais. É virtualmente inviável usar fontes em negrito no Symphony. -500 pontos. Porém a simulação de itálico funciona tão bem que você quase não percebe que fontes bem desenhadas, como Monotype Sans ou Tahoma, na verdade não têm itálico... +100 pontos O Symphony é significativamente mais lento que o OpenOffice3. Não o suficiente para inviabilizar o seu uso por mim, mas indicativo de que algo não vai bem com o código, que se torna mais instável à medida em que você o usa. -200 pontos. Da primeira vez que você usa o programa ele demora quase três minutos se configurando antes de iniciar e você não tem nenhum feedback. -150 pontos. Oi Xisberto No seu comentario vc menciomou em criar os link e adicionar o usuário no grupo video, mas mesmo realizando o comando: sudo gpasswd -a afonso video e criando os links /dev/radio, /dev/video não consigo ver o vídeo, (refere que eu tenho que mudar a configuração do V4L2 O tuner do radio mostra a procura das estações, mas não me permite mudar a fonte de mixagem (fica travado no dig1). Oo° Seguinte, eu segui algumas dicas da NET para instalar o Firebird 2.1 no Ubuntu 8.10 - Desktop, eu até consegui instalar (com .deb sim, já com .rpm, nada!), mas, ele não iniciava nem com reza de padre velho! Recebi muitas dicas e orientações para iniciar o _bicho_, e mesmo assim não funfou, eu já estava pensando que era algo no meu PC, porém, consegui instalar e iniciar o Firebird normalmente por esta referência: [https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Firebird2.1] Agora a dúvida, é possível eu criar um .deb da cópia que instalei (2.1)? Eu quero criar este arquivo para distribuir junto com algumas aplicações open source que distribuo (num CD por exemplo), juntamente com um mini tutorial mostrando como criei o pacote, e como instala-lo no Ubuntu. Bom, a dúvida deve ter soado bem iniciante, mas é isso, eu sou um usuário Junior :) , e estou muito satisfeito com o Linux, está até complicado ter que ir no outro SO fazer alguns trabalhos. Pessoal, estou tentando usar o Ubuntu 8.10 mas me parece que ele esta meio instavel em relacao ao 8.0.4.1, alguem ja notou isso ? Ele nao segura as configuracoes de rede, agora ele fica perdendo a barra de titulo das janelas... algumas configuracoes ele parece nao salvar... Tentei todos os testes aqui indicado mais o meu VirtualBox esta
apresentando esse erro:

não necessitar de instalar o Windows novamente? Ubuntu 2.6.24 com o

usuários existentes poderão acessar sua máquina virtual.
Você já criou o HD virtual? Configurou a quantidade de memoria? já
configurou o teu driver de CD?

passei por umas 3 páginas pra conseguir resolver. Ae qd refiz o sistema,
depois de um tempo, instalei de primeira sem precisar arrumar nada (vai

[Ubuntu-BR] WebCam - Microdia PC Camera
Boa noite pessoALL! Eu utilizo um notebook Acer Aspire 5050-3233 e estou tendo problemas para realizar a instalação da web cam. Realizei buscas pela internet (Google) e o único site que aparentemente possuía alguma salvação para o meu problema apenas me troxe mais problemas. Bem, vamos a um passo-a-passo do que eu fiz: 1) listei o dispositivo usb (web cam) através do comando lsusb: saída: http://paste.ubuntu.com/90443/ 2) realizei uma busca no Google pela instalação deste dispositivo. Encontrei suporte neste site: http://www.64bitjungle.com/tech/microdia-webcam-0c54-experimental-drivers-installation-and-testing-part-1/ 3) segui todos os passos e para minha decepção, ao executar o último comando, ocorre o seguinte erro: saída: http://paste.ubuntu.com/90466/ ALguém conhece alguma maneira de como instalar a web cam, já que ela foi reconhecida pelo sistema? Este erro que ocorre, sei que tem haver com o script que eu peguei no site, mas onde está o erro? P.S.: eu adicionei as saidas dos comandos e o erro mostrado no shell através do paste.ubuntu. Não sei se dessa forma fica mais fácil e mais organizado o e-mail. Como este é meu segundo post na lista, ainda não sei como fica melhor para todos. [Ubuntu-BR] ATI Radeon 9200 com FGLRX estranho.
Galera, acabei de formatar aqui um PC que eu tenho e tava sem usar a um tempo. instalei nele o novo Kubuntu. Possuo uma ati radeon 9200 como a provedora de video desta maquina, porem uma coisa estranha esta acontecendo. com o driver generico que é instalado junto com o SO eu estou tendo os efeitos de minimizar, o alt+tab pra mudar de janelas.. tudo bonitinho parecendo que tô rodando o driver nativo. Mas quando eu instalo o FGLRX tudo trava, não me deixa nem mudar a resolução da tela! =/ Alguem ta passando por isso? Posso estar enganado, mas sempre que mudo a versão do vbox dá isso, aí eu
vou apago a máquina virtual sem apagar o arquivo vdi (onde o SO está
instalado) e crio uma nova vm usando este vdi. Talvez não seja a melhor
forma, mas comigo funciona.

apresentando esse erro:

Text strings should be enclosed in single quotes, as double quotes can mean strings (non- standard mode) or identifiers (ANSI standard mode). Fixed that in uploaded file (replacement for /usr/share/mysql/debian-start.inc.sh). What happens is a bit hard to tell exactly, as it will only show during startup and I searched the logs for 2 hours and could not find any log entry. However, the querylog (which is on on my system) clearly showed the wrong quotation. I've pinged a comment on that bug to enquire as to the status. My suggestion is that if the upstream bug is not fixed, a Ubuntu patch should be built into the ubuntu distributed version that implements C. You have been subscribed to a public bug: I have a server from Network Appliances that I mount on my Xubuntu 8.10 via SAMBA or CIFS. Mounting a share from that server is ok, but when changing to a directory below that mountpoint, the system quickly crashes. The directory in which one I change has some 250 directory entries. In the few cases, where the system doesn't crash and where I can do an ls, the result only shows some 145 of the 250 directories. As I told, the system normally freezes. It does this nearly every time when entering cd followed by TAB (for bash completion). In that case, nothing works any longer, not the mouse nor the keyboard. The system can even not be pinged any longer. I do not use any special mount options, just mount.cifs //server/share /mnt/xxx or mount.smbfs ... I can easily reproduce the problem on - Ubuntu 8.10 - Xubuntu 8.10 - Debian Lenny (since I updated it 14 days ago; before that update, there was no problem) The problem does not appear on - Ubuntu 8.04 - Debian Etch There's no problem mounting a Samba share on a Linux server; the bug only occurs when mounting a NetApp share. I made my tests on 4 different PCs with the same results everywhere. I saw a similar bug report with the number 296304. Bonjour, Quelle est la différence entre le CD et le DVD? Pour le CD, j'ai téléchargé le fichier iso puis appliqué le checksum à l'aide de CFI (réponse OK). J'ai ensuite graver le CD et débuté l'installation.Tout semble se dérouler normalement jusqu'à l'apparition d'une fenêtre Install Ensuite le processus d'installation reste figé. Quid? Pour le DVD, j'ai pu télécharger pendant plus de 3 heures et à 3 minutes de la fin tout s'est arrêté. Que peut-on conclure et faire? Merci pour les avis . Le CD ne comporte que le système d'exploitation Ubuntu et son interface Gnome. Le DVD a, en plus, tous les logiciels libres habituels ; tels openOffice, the GIMP, etc... Pour les problèmes d'installation rencontrés, tu devrais procéder à la vérification du CD. Une étape le permet. Il arrive fréquemment que le CD (ou DVD) soit inopérant. Quant au téléchargement du DVD, tu ne dois pas avoir un débit d'ADSL suffisant pour aller plus vite. Peut-être qu'en te procurant une revue spécialisée Linux, tu trouverais un DVD inclus t'évitant l'énervement de l'échec à 3 minutes de la fin. Bonjour; Voila j'ai un serveur Ubuntu, un réseau local, une connexion internet : - Le serveur ne posséde qu'une seule carte réseaux - Le réseau local est sur une plage d'adresse classe C - La connexion internet passe un pix avec une adresse de classe B Est-il possible de connecter mon serveur (et donc les clients de mon réseau local) à internet sans nouvelle carte réseau et sans changement de mes adressages ? Pix? Le firewall Cisco? Tu as deux réseaux un de classe C et un de classe B. Boujour , Depuis plus 5 ans sous linux et ubuntu je desire réinstaller ubuntu Lts soit 8.04 hardy /heron j'esite entre 32 et 64 bits et la version lts et les autres j'usqu'ici j'avais toujours mis à jour le systeme avec les nouvelles version mais je ne suis pas motivé pour le faire encore et voudrais Installer et garder la lts au moins pour 2 ans... LTS ou pas?: Je possède plusieurs PC. Sur le mien je passe de LTS en LTS sur les autres je mettais généralement à jour à chaque nouvelle version. Bilan: J'ai décidé de passer de LTS en LTS sur tous les PC car sauf en fin de période LTS, les mises à jour ne se justifient pas dans mon cas. 64 bits ou 32bits?: Sur mon portable c'est 32b sur les deux fixes qui possèdent des processeurs 64b, l'un est en 32b l'autre en 64b. Celui en 64b possède 4 Go de Ram donc le 64b semblait s'imposer. Bilan: 64b OK à condition de posséder un 32b pour certaines applications (firefox entre autres). Tu n'auras évidement pas les toutes dernières version Ooo ou firefox, mais est-ce absolument nécessaire? Hi Alej, I think the reason yours works and not mine is that it looks like yours is a CONEXANT audio chipset as opposed to the alc888/883 one on the an- m2hd. hdmi support seems to be on a per chipset basis and they seem to be adding one or 2 new ones per release and the alc883 just hasn't been done yet.
