Hi all,

I 'm Salah from Tunisia, I would like to join the QA Team in order to
help the Ubuntu community. I'm interested by Daily smoke testing.

Does Daily smoke testing mean download the daily iso from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ and test applications ?

 Hi All,

on the web is Firefox 3.5.
 http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser_version-ww-weekly-200827-200951Congrats
to Mozilla (and the open web)!

While I'm all for celebrations, I think getting euphoric over this
statistic is a bit misleading .. as one can clearly see from the graph, ie6
+ 7 + 8 combined is still wayy ahead of Firefox all versions combined. I
definitely think we should celebrate Firefox's phenomenal growth, but I
think taking that statistic and making it sound like Firefox is the browser
leader can only be construed as desperation / misleading.

Definitely congrats to Firefox 3.5. But lets not fool ourselves there
is much to be done to win this battle yet ...

 just my two bits,
 Sanjay

From a web developer perspective, you can't just assume if it works in IE6
it will work in IE8 or vice versa. You can assume that on Firefox 3.5. I
agree, that I could have worded it better. We definitely haven't won yet.

Meaning - assume that if something works on Firefox 3.0 it will work on
Firefox 3.5 ? That isn't a 100% true, since every browser that wants to
evolve has to make some backwards incompatible changes . Of course, I agree
with you that developing for IE is hell in general due to its lack of
standards support.

Also, that's why I wanted to use it as a rallying call (see finish off IE6
below). If you have a website please add it (it will add a little banner
 encouraging IE6 users to upgrade).

Sure - though I think I would like it if the page emphasized the importance
of web standards and IE's consistent disdain for it rather than stressing on
the point that IE6 is 'old'. Unfortunately, I know too many people,
especially in India, who are content with decade-old software, as long as it
'works', also because they are reluctant to learn something new. We must get
across the point that it does not work. We take a rather harsh approach on
our site http://pad.ma/ (try going there with IE, any version :P ) - we
definitely do need more initiatives like this though - urging people to put
some banner / information on their website educating users who are using
non-standards compliant browsers. Do keep up the good work :)

Other than that I would really like other ideas for promoting Firefox in
India. Maybe -- Hand out pamphlets to webcafes/anywhere we see IE being
 used, wear Firefox t-shirts.

One thing I like to do when I go to a cybercafe is install firefox when I
can :) - also when I find firefox installed in a cybercafe, I generally make
it a point to tell the cybercafe owner 'thanks' so he knows customers
appreciate it.

You should definitely be in touch with the folks at
http://www.spreadfirefox.com/ and follow up on those great ideas :).

 Any other ideas?

Events are another good idea, I think - we had organized something for the
launch of firefox 3.5 - you can view the entire event here:
http://pad.ma/Vsmpvstz/info .

Best of luck :)
-Sanjay

 -Bryan

But we can use this as a rallying call to do more. Let's Finish Off IE6
http://www.ie6nomore.com/ (remove the links to IE8 and Safari if you
want, and maybe add one for Opera).

(I also posted this on my blog,
 http://gquigs.blogspot.com/2009/12/firefox-35-most-popular-browser-major.htmland
if you use slashdot please +1 me)

The stats for India are unfortunately much more in favor of IE6 (
 http://gs.statcounter.com/chart.php?browser_version-IN-weekly-200827-200951)
But together we can do something about that,
  Bryan

[ubuntu-in] Mailman Moderation policy

2009-12-25 Thread Aanjhan R
Hi All,

I have seen off late a lot of emails getting stuck at moderation due
to excessive body size. And main reason has been not proper trimming
of messages, not following mailing list guidelines.

If you would want your emails not to be moderated by mailman and just
smoothly pass through, ensure you properly trim the message you are
replying to and not over quote. Also top posting (with the entire
thread contents below), the email shall result in Mail body too huge
moderation message and hence wait until it is approved by one of the
admins.

So the solution to all this, and to keep our mailing list archives
neat and clean for future viewing lets follow the mailing list
guidelines present here from now.

http://ubuntu-in.info/wiki/index.php/MailingList_Guidelines

(There is a reason for trimmed interleaved posting. It makes following
a thread very easy in the future.)

Thanks a lot!

Aanjhan

Re: [ubuntu-in] Query: uses of /home being on a different partition

2009-12-25 Thread Ramnarayan.K
Hi

Most of the points are covered. But my 2 bit

1. a separate home makes backing up easier.
2. In event of a crash (which unfortunately can be expected in the
more modern cutting edge distros) makes user data vulnerable and its
better off in a separate partition

3. While the software is installed in / (root) the preferences some
user data etc is stored in /home/user. Which means if you reinstall
you lose this. Eg if you use thunderbird all your mails are in
/home/user/.mozilla-thunderbird/etc . Note the .. If you open yor
home and press ctrl+h it will show you a host of . files and folders
and you can actually see what all is stored there.

4. If you can back up your data then you can use a live cd / dvd and
use gpart to repartition and even move extra space from one partition
to the other

@ regarding swap - interesting question - how much is enough. Does any
one know of any diagnostic tools that can record swap usage over a
period of time (multiple log on etc) it would be good to know how much
swap is actually used.

[ubuntu-in] Problem with Network-manager on ubuntu 9.10

2009-12-25 Thread Ramnarayan.K
Hi

A few days back my mobile broadband device (ZTE EVDO AC8700) stopped working
on Ubuntu 9.10 (Ultimate). This distro had been updated recently but i faced
no problems after the updates.

The mobile broadband just refused to work, i logged into windows to see if
there was a signal and if it worked, after some struggle it started to work.
I then booted up a live Ubuntu 9.10 CD and there too this device got
working.

I thought the problem might be with the network-manager so i went an
uninstalled it hoping to install an older version, but now i get an error
while installing

error message from synaptic while selecting network-manager-gnome for
installation

Package network-manager-gnome has no available version, but exists in the
database.
This typically means that the package was mentioned in a dependency and
never uploaded, has been obsoleted or is not available with the contents of
sources.list

any idea what this means.

So net result is i am unable to get back the network-manager tool on my
panel

Any idea how to re-install this app

***
am currently using the said device by setting it up under gnome-ppp,

Personally, I avoid 'click and drag' just because I normally forget
when it will copy and when it will move. Therefore, if using the GUI,
I will right click and select copy or cut as required, and then paste.
Now I don't think that explains your problem though. You could try
using the cp command from the command line. Also, when you had your
problem, was OpenShot still open? I am just thinking that if the file
is still open in the application, that may cause the copy command to
misbehave.

Other than that, I have no suggestions.

LV2 packages for Karmic (Teza requested)

2009-12-25 Thread Scott Lavender
Several lv2 packages are available for Karmic in my PPA now, including
zynjacku and lv2rack.

To add my PPA as a repository-

Quick method:
ppa:slavender/karmic

More laborious:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/slavender/karmic/ubuntu karmic main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/slavender/karmic/ubuntu karmic main

They appear to work as I started each application and inserted various
effects but did not run any sound through them. I would be very

Also it should be noted that these do not include desktop icons or menu

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Digest ubuntu-br, volume 57, assunto 107

2009-12-25 Thread Samuel Querino da Cruz
O Verdadeiro Natal!

festa, e sim o fato singular: - Jesus nasceu!

Senhor e Salvador Jesus Cristo.

 *$iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp -d $win2003 --dport 3389 -j ACCEPT
 $iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 3389 -j DNAT
 --to-destination $win2003:3389
 *

 *$iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp --dport 3389 -j DNAT
 --to-destination $win2003:3389*

 escutando ???

 Em resumo, se eu _substituir_:
 $/iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp -d $win2003 --dport 3389 -j ACCEPT
 $iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 3389 -j DNAT
 --to-destination $win2003:3389
 /
 _por_:
 /$/i/ptables -A FORWARD -p tcp -d $win2003 --dport 3389 -j ACCEPT
 $iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp --dport 3389 -j DNAT
 --to-destination $win2003:3389/

 _*pára*_ de funcionar o acesso!

Alguém sabe me dizer porque acontece isso?

 grato,
 Flávio

Re: [Ubuntu-be] my message to FEDICT.be: offre tousenligne.be / aanbod iedereenonline.be

2009-12-25 Thread Samuel
Hallo,

Internet aye?” willen beginnen.

Omdat

Xorg.0.log

2009-12-25 Thread

(II) intel(0): EDID vendor AUO, prod id 4588
(II) intel(0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines:
(II) intel(0): Modeline 1366x768x0.0 72.00 1366 1414 1446 1486 768 771
775 806 +hsync -vsync (48.5 kHz)
(II) intel(0): Modeline 1366x768x0.0 72.00 1366 1414 1446 1486 768 771
775 806 +hsync -vsync (48.5 kHz)

В разделе OPTIONS man 1 Xorg сказано:
-logverbose [n]
Sets the verbosity level for information printed to the Xorg server log file.
If the n value isn't supplied, each occurrence of this option increments the
log file verbosity level. When the n value is supplied, the log file verbosity
level is set to that value. The default log file verbosity level is 3.

/etc/inittab вообще нет :-0

Re: Kubuntu?

2009-12-25 Thread locke314

Don't ask to ask, just ask!

[Bug 16918] Re: smartcard support is not enabled in openssh

2009-12-25 Thread Jean-Michel Pouré
I have been using Debian GNU/Linux for 10 years.
I really need smartcard support to secure my SSH and StrongSwan communications.

As written before, smartcard are really secure technologies.
You can buy used smartcard readers on eBay for less than 10 euros.

So please add smartcard support to Openssh.

2009-12-25 Thread Kees Cook
Ah-ha! I suspect it's recent changes to the initramfs that continues to
reduce the modules-needed-for-boot, which left out tun. I was able to
solve this by just sudo modprobe tun before attempting to start an
interface. Hint found at:

Re: dual boot

2009-12-25 Thread Jean Argenty
Bonjour Rambaut,

[Bug 500315] [NEW] apport hook swallows error output from aplay, paplay, gst-launch

2009-12-25 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Totem's apport hook invokes aplay, paplay and gst-launch-0.10 to help
diagnose sound problems. If any of these programs fail to run, the
error output (which may be useful in debugging) is lost.

[Bug 395314] Re: gdm 2.26 appears on wrong monitor

2009-12-25 Thread YitzchokL
I'm adding my comment here rather than to the Gnome bug tracker because
I don't have an account there, and here I can reference Ubuntu versions

According to lspci my graphics card is
VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G71 [GeForce 7300 GS] (rev a1)

On Jaunty the login prompt always appeared on the primary monitor
(left). On Karmic (upgraded on-line today 25/Dec/09) the login prompt
seems to be dependent on the mouse position as described above. I seem
to recall that the mouse always was in the middle of the two screens,
just to the right.

Interestingly at the point at which you have to put your mouse on the
main screen to get the login prompt to appear there, you can't actually
see the mouse pointer on that screen; it seems to be hidden by the
Ubuntu splash screen.

[Bug 164793] Re: Logitech MX610 mouse special functions doesn't work

2009-12-25 Thread ChosenOne
The mouse is a bit strange - it has two logical interfaces for the USB
receiver/transmitter. They are on the same plug, but they are treated as
separate devices by the Linux USB subsystem. The first USB interface is the
normal mouse device - it has the X/Y motion, the normal buttons and the
scrollwheel. The five buttons down the left edge (Vol +, Vol -, Mute, Email and
IM) are on the second interface, which probably has the additional features
like battery status as well as the indicator LEDs for Email and IM.

[Bug 498534] Re: can't connect user with low UID

2009-12-25 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Lucid amd64 20091222.1 iso booted via grub loopback from hd was the
first iso where I was presented with a login screen but could not login.
20091221 was the last iso with which I was able to get to the desktop
just fine.

Based on this report I have now tried to add a new user via useradd on
the console. The new user got uid 1000 and was able to login. The user
ubuntu had uid 999.

Seems like this could be the same bug. I am however also wondering about
bug 495304 because after adding my user the login also automatically
presented a list which it had not done before.

I don't know if this is the right place to report this but I have had
also problems with the ubuntu upgrade using an old Nvidia Geforce 440 Go
card. I installed the old nvidia-glx-96 using the 2.6.31-17-386, but the

works. Maybe with a new nvidia-glx would also work but i didn't try

[Bug 500316] [NEW] Needs support for apport hooks and config

2009-12-25 Thread Philip Peitsch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-distutils-extra

I'm writing a custom app, and want to make use of the apport bug
reporting system (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport and
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport/DeveloperHowTo) to allow users to log
bugs directly to launchpad using the application.

To do this, I need a way of making the project install apport config
files in /etc/apport/crashdb.conf, and apport hooks in /usr/share/apport
/package-hooks/binarypackagename.py or /usr/share/apport/package-
hooks/source_sourcepackagename.py. This would be useful to get as
part of auto.py.

[Bug 500321] [NEW] Thunderbird segfaults, gdb says file format not recognised

2009-12-25 Thread marker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

In Ubuntustudio 9.10 using thunderbird 2.0.0.23+build1+nobinonly-
0ubuntu1, attempting to launch thunderbird fails like this:

  $ thunderbird

  (thunderbird-bin:11442): GLib-WARNING **: g_set_prgname() called multiple
times
  Segmentation fault
  $

Using the -safe-mode to disable plugins makes no difference.

I tried the debugging procedure from the wiki, and when I start gdb it
says, /usr/bin/thunderbird: not in executable format: File format not
recognised

Thinking that perhaps the executable had been corrupted, I did an apt-
get remove --purge thunderbird then apt-get install thunderbird and
tried again...

  $ thunderbird -safe-mode

  (thunderbird-bin:12124): GLib-WARNING **: g_set_prgname() called multiple
times
  Segmentation fault
  $

This time, I can see the thunderbird window open momentarily before it
fails, unlike before, but gdb still won't recognise the file format.

[Bug 96991] Re: (Needs radeon-rewrite) 3D stuff breaks with Compiz: Redirected Direct Rendering is needed in DRI

2009-12-25 Thread Reynaldo Matos Hortensi
Hi Extender,
I have tried with xorg-edger drivers and radeon.modset=1 kernel parameter...
everything worked fine but googleearth (ATI Radeon Xpress 200, chipset RS482).
Glxgears worked fine (I can move the glxgears window without artefacts on
screen).
Googleearth have produced artefacts (see attachment).
I will be back with number for glxgears and gtkperf.

[Bug 500325] [NEW] icon size setting does not honour KDE setting automatically

2009-12-25 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

This bug concerns the KDE-adaptions of openoffice.org, may be gnome to,
I do not know. In a fresh installation the icon size is set to big.
This setting lets openoffice ignore the standard icon size of KDE from
systemsettings. I believe the setting should be automatically. Then it
adapts to whatever is set in systemsettings. I believe this is the best
configuration, also if used in a gnome environment. (Note: The debug
information contains my settings, where I have already changed the
settings, therefor it is very useless, I did not know how to remove it).
