Re: [ubuntu-in] Indian Languages on Ubuntu

Thanks for the information. Then it is no use for me, since even ubuntu can
be customized for Indic.
I wish CDAC had developed OCR for Kannada, Telugu, I would have appreciated
their efforts. At present OCR for all langs of Indic except telugu and
kannada are available !! I don't know why they have not taken much interest
to develop OCR for Kannada and telugu as much for Hindi OCR?

 1. What kind of Ubuntu Install have you done (is it from within
windows using WUBI or a full fledged proper install)
 2. What version of Openoffice are you running
 3. How is the zip file connected to your using open office. Were you
trying to open the zip file with Open Office ??

If openoffice cannot find a file it should give an error and move on.

I have the Open office ( i guess it is oo 3.1) which is in the 9.10 CD

I have installed Ubuntu along with windows, I am not sure whether it is a
WUBI or a full version.

I used the zip format to compress in ubuntu to send the file... later after
I disconnected from the internet and then opened the compressed ( zip
format) the problem started.

pl. tell me what an active net connection is... at home i have a very slow
mobile phone modem. I do not have a always on connection.

2010-05-24 Thread Narendra Diwate
Yes

Its a version of Debian customised for Indian Languages by CDAC and is
available in Desktop as well as server. However the Linux kernel is quite
old - uses 2.6.22 kernel while Lucid uses 2.6.32. So probably (?) EXT4
support will be lacking. Also no idea about what programs are bundled with
it. However for normal desktop use it should be sufficient.

BOSS has been around for some time its the CDAC linux version check
out http://www.bosslinux.in/

have never used it so no comments on that

However on the language front.
Actually in Ubuntu its quite easy

The first place to choose is right at setup - where Ubuntu allows you
to choose installation in the n number of languages (am not sre how
many) but a fair bit of indian languages are present

> Though i know a couple of Indian languages, i have used the computer only in

am snipping the rest of your post and will run through the mainpoints

To install and enable additional Language support go to
System - Administration - Language Support and go to the install /
remove languages and then just select any (or many) of the languages
you want and then proceed with install. After the installation is
successful (am not sure if a reboot is required) then you will be able
to choose your login language at the time of login.

Thats it you are ready to रोक एण्ड़ रोल

***
additional notes are below
First choosing the language to install is quite easy (as mentioned
first at the fresh install phase) . This choice by default will enable
your computer to boot up in your preferred language of choice, However
this is not final at any stage later on you can install any (repeat
any) and any number of other languages and the the login in time one
can choose which language to boot into (as far as i know in windows
one must buy separate versions for different languages)

In most of the supported languages the basic software that comes the
menu's and interface are much translated into the language you may
have chosen. However not all the software has every thing translated.

Depending on what your default keyboard choice was (which can wildly
vary - if you want, from your language of choice) , the OS (Ubuntu)
will keep that choice irrespective of which language you choose and
one must choose an additional keyboards (language input) to begin
typing in a particular language (System - Preferences --Keyboard --
Layouts)

In case you have already installed say english language and US english
keyboard its just a matter of a decent net connection to install the
additional language packs

enjoy

Dear all,

First of all thanks for the overwhelming support

I had zipped a 600 kb document ( in zip format) and sent it over the
the e-mail). After I disconnected the net and clicked to open the
zipped folder the OO crashed. I tried restarting number of times.
Then i deleted the folder from the desk-top ( where i had placed it
originally). Since I had deleted the the zip folder, I again
downloaded from the mail I had sent. That is the sequence of what I
did.

Let me try out the suggestions in this string of mails and will post
the result.

Thanks again.

[ubuntu-in] Indian Languages on Ubuntu

2010-05-24 Thread Narendra Diwate
The posts over the past few days and a TV advert for the Indian version of
Linux named BOSS have prompted me to write this
query.

Though i know a couple of Indian languages, i have used the computer only in
English like most if not all on this list and computer users in India in
general. Though i know Ubuntu and a lot of other Linux OS's support use of
Indian languages, I frankly have no Idea how to use it and to what extent is
it developed.

What i would like to know is how (as in what packages to add, configs
changes etc) can i have a completely Indian language (and english) driven
desktop in either Hindi or Telugu. Something right from the login screen to
icons to on screen messages to program help to typing support on a English
keyboard to openoffice and whatever you can think of.

Something that a literate (but not in english ) user be able to use. And
from those that are already using it how easy, intuitive it is and how
accurate are the translations.

At some point may be help in the translations once i am comfortable typing
in hindi. I have seen quite a few programs lacking indian translations.

Your advice will be sincerely appreciated.

 Hi Nikhil,

I have faced this issue a lot of times.
What we do is delete the .openoffice.org folder in users home folder.
Opening openoffice after that will recreate the deleted folder.

[ubuntu-in] All work and no play makes Linux a dull way :-)

2010-05-24 Thread K Ramnarayan
Hi

Recently some of us were reading a book on Digital Landscape Photography. One
of the most interesting innovations was the use of HDR imaging. The Book of
course talked only about some proprietory software (it is also available as
freeware trial download and it plasters its watermark all over the output)

A friend said Quote "does ubuntu have such software and can it do the job"

A quick search of synaptic threw up a GUI for HDR manipulation
qtpfsgui

(what a mouthful)

http://qtpfsgui.sourceforge.net/

am quite sure its available in the Ubuntu repos.

And as luck would have it in my constant quest for some imaging software i
must have installed this as well, so in a matter of minutes we had processed
some images and WOW what output- absolutely fantastic. It needed some playing
around a bit but at then end it was both worth the (small ) effort and the huge
long term learning.

So for those of you interested in creative photography i think don't waste any
time just read up some tutorial and go out with your cameras and do the
needful the output will both startle and really amaze you.

To make sure you get the most amazing output to start with use the Fattal
algorithm, once you get hooked you can start playing around with the others.

I am hooked and look forward to using this tool often for fun as well as some
creative results.

enjoy

For non Hindi people
the OP's question is that everytime he uses Unicode Hindi in Open
Office it crashes

My response
was
1. Does it only crash in unicode hindi
2. How does he enable unicode hindi - there are two modes - one is the
keyboard mode and the other is to boot the whole system into hindi
3. Kindly provide details of what versions of Ubuntu and Open Office
you use and how you use it

am not sure what the rules for multi language posting are but would
prefer (request) pure languages rather then hybrid as the OP has done.

You are deleting the .openoffice (note: the (dot) openoffice) which contains
user configuration and not any executables or program files.

[ubuntu-in] Age old question , no satisfactory answer - Needed a work planner

2010-05-24 Thread K Ramnarayan
Hi

This is an oft repeated question and am once again asking because have yet to
come across a satisfactory solution.

Am searching for a planner / note taker tool.

Something that replicates the free flowoing nature of lists and then allows
some categorization. Something that allows entire lists to be viewed at once.

Am sure many of us make lists and we have our ways of sorting and categorizing
them.

The present tools ( that i seem to have come across) are very restrictive in
their nature

They want time limits and a date and they normally allow only one main job
title and then some space for description etc.

Have tried Korganizer, Sunbird Calendar Evolution calendar none of them have
what is needed

so kind request for suggestions

regards
ram
