As you can see this is not a normal bug, I used this space to dump my anger. (it will work when I press the submit button...) I tried to separate my personal feelings from the bug as much as possible. My system is ubuntu 10.04 upgraded from 8.04 LTS and is now up-to-date with synaptics. Good reading! -- INTRODUCTION -- The recent introduction of the safely remove hardware for USB sticks / memory cards / cd roms caused me some bad head-scratching. As I can see, you have now 2 choices with media/removable devices: safely remove or eject. That is IMHO nonsense: eject usb pen drive?? safely remove cd rom?? or cd hard drive?? BEFORE there was umount (right click). Or you could click the eject icon in nautilus: it still was the SAME command: umount. NOW right click on media (nautilus) tell you so many options. And there is still the eject icon that you don't know how does actually behave since there are 2 textual commands now. They introduced a feature that they knew didn't work and confuse you. Why the heck? -- HERE THE BUG FOR WHO DOESN'T WANT TO READ EVERYTHING (PART 1) -- There is one good thing: safely remove hardware shuts down my usb drive led. So i guess it's power-management with aggressive power saving settings. DOWNSIDE: it doesn't know *HOW TO POWER IT UP AGAIN*. That's crazy! Totally nonsense: what feature is this? it's a bad bug! (IMHO) The real problem comes when I use my internal USB CARD READER. I insert a COMPACT FLASH card. Ok works, well. A yellow led is lit. Now I want to remove the COMPACT FLASH card. * If i do so it cant be mounted anymore. * -- SECONDARY BUG -- AND the device DISAPPEARS from /dev listing!!! You tell me: why do you care? keep on readin'. I use to umount from desktop my devices, so to mount them again from console. NOW I CAN'T. Because if i INSERT the device, DBUS auto mount it. If i umount it DISAPPEAR from dev listing. * Why make life so hard? It used to be easy. * I have to shut down X system+dbus now so that when I insert the device nothing tampers with udev. I can now call fdisk or mkfs or mount! (FINALLY) That's the ONLY way i have to mount a dev from terminal, a task that i need quite often. -- HERE THE BUG FOR WHO DOESN'T WANT TO READ EVERYTHING (PART 2) -- Anyways there's a problem. with my COMPACT flash. If I eject it then the flash HARDWARE DEVICE is shut down, powered down and doesn't work anymore. If i reboot, STILL DOESNT WORK. (eject, remove COMPAT FLASH card, shut down, power up, insert COMPACT FLASH card. NO WORK!!) It only works if I power down the PSU ~10 seconds. * Ubuntu eject / power save mode is so powerful that my hardware card reader can't wakeup even after reboot!! * The old ubuntu 8.04 LTS always worked. Update from base 10.4 to latest-10.4.1.whatever doesn't help. -- RAW GUESSING -- ACPI *MIGHT* be implemented wrong (i have latest bios), but we've always had to handle buggy hardware implementations in x86. [Bug 576992] Re: Hidden SSID still not work in 10.04
I have the same problem now with a fresh installation of Lucid on my Laptop. I can only connect to an AP with SSID been broadcasted. The argument that turning off the SSID broadcast is against the standard is not a good argument. When your AP does not support WPA because it is to old, the best method to get a little bit security is use a hidden SSID and a MAC filter if it exists. At this time the AP is placed in the basement with a very limited reach of action. WEP is so insecure that i let the AP in unsecure mode. [Bug 441941] Re: grub fails after running Windows
It would be very helpful to me if people affected by this bug could follow the directions from Felix Zielcke in comment 4, and attach the results here. This is much more useful than describing your hardware or explaining again how serious the bug is! :-) The one person to provide this information did so in comment 6. Thank you. His information indicates that offsets 0x4A00 to 0x4BFF are overwritten. If other people's results are consistent with that (and that's a big if, which is why we NEED the data requested in comment 4), then the problem is NOT that GRUB 2 is doing something dramatically different from how GRUB Legacy did it, or putting its information in a different place. The problem is: GRUB 2's core image is more useful than GRUB Legacy's Stage 1.5, and is thus bigger. This puts us in a very difficult position. The enhancements are real, and we're using them in Ubuntu; they allow us to do such things as making the boot loader reliable on multiple-disk systems. If you were affected by that unreliability then this is a pretty big deal! Thus, simply going back to GRUB 2 is not an option for us. The relevant change in BURG (which, by the way, is not a total rewrite of GRUB 2, but a single-developer fork which sees relatively little development effort compared to GRUB 2) is that it provides a --alt option to grub-install and grub-setup which forces the use of blocklists: in plain English, that means that rather than putting the core image in the gap between the master boot record and the first partition, it instead remembers the list of blocks where /boot/grub/core.img currently lives on disk. That will become unbootable in a different situation, namely when your filesystem decides to move /boot/grub/core.img around for some reason (filesystem recovery, defragmentation, performance optimisations, etc.). Now, presumably those people advocating BURG aren't as badly affected by that, which is fair enough, but I hope people see why I hold the position that it's not obvious that it's worth exchanging one problem for the other. At this point, I don't want to make any change without more hard data on exactly what these Windows tools are doing. There seem to be several tools involved. Perhaps they're all doing different things, or perhaps they have something in common. Maybe we can spot particular signatures and work around them somehow, e.g. by skipping the relevant sectors, for instance. But I can't do anything until I know exactly what's going on. So, at the risk of repeating myself again - if you're affected by this bug, please provide the information requested by Felix Zielcke in comment 4, following the example set in comment 6. [Bug 625383] [NEW] grub hangs at early booting after handoff from PXE
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: grub2 On three different Dell Inspiron 1545 (and 1546) systems, grub hangs right after hand-off from PXE. I've tried 'localboot 0', 'localboot 0x80', and 'localboot -1'. -1 seems to work but only on the Inspiron 1546. 'localboot 5' was also attempted in case the issue was with how the PXE stack was getting unloaded, but it doesn't seem to change behavior at all. When the systems are booted directly to the hard drive (either using F12 to boot to the hard drive directly, or escaping out of PXE before it does boot off the network, grub loads normally and hands off to the kernel without a hitch. Installing grub with --debug-image=all yields no debugging information whatsoever if booting using PXE. Behavior is normal if booted straight to the hard drive (debug information is shown). ** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: pcert -- grub hangs at early booting after handoff from PXE https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625383 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 433438] Re: device descriptor read/64, error -110
I'm having a similar problem after an update I installed this morning I'm running Kubuntu Lucid with kernel 2.6.32-24-generic (64bit) In my case the issue involves my usb mouse and keyboard. I've checked and the keyboard an mouse are working in the bios but then are deactivated when linux boots. As a workaround I've had to add a ps2 keyboard and mouse to get past the login screen. Then if I wait a couple of minutes the mouse ad kbd are enable. Based on the syslog (att.) it looks to me like the usb HID drivers aren't being loaded until a bit more that 2 minutes after I begin the boot process. ** Attachment added: syslog for usb during boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/433438/+attachment/1523197/+files/usbkbd.txt -- device descriptor read/64, error -110 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433438 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 529312] Re: blueman-sendto crashed with AttributeError in on_cancel()
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu development version (10.10). Blueman was also updated in 10.04 final version. If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect 529312, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue. ** Changed in: blueman (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- blueman-sendto crashed with AttributeError in on_cancel() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/529312 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 624361] Re: service ssh restart does not test the configuration file
Hi Simon, thanks very much for filing this bug report and working with us to make Ubuntu better. Because of the way upstart and sshd work together, its hard to detect failures. The reason try-restart worked was that it falls through in /usr/sbin/service, as its not one of the regular actions that upstart supports. In looking at this, I think the appropriate fix is to add a pre-stop that runs /usr/sbin/sshd -t And will warn the user that the config file is broken, and possibly even abort the stop. Setting status to Triaged as I think this fix can be worked on now. Setting status to High, as it is a serious problem for server users if sshd is silently broken on a remote machine. ** Changed in: openssh (Ubuntu) Status: New = Triaged ** Changed in: openssh (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = High -- service ssh restart does not test the configuration file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/624361 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 625392] [NEW] Lucid update to 2.6.32.21 stable release
Public bug reported: SRU Justification Impact: The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream by originating either directly from Linus' tree or in a minimally backported form of that patch. The 2.6.32.21 upstream stable patch set is now available. It should be included in the Ubuntu kernel as well. http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/ChangeLog-2.6.32.21 http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/patch-2.6.32.21.bz2 TEST CASE: TBD The following 3 patches are in the 2.6.32.20 stable release: * Linux 2.6.32.21 * x86, apic: ack all pending irqs when crashed/on kexec * USB: ftdi_sio: add product ID for Lenz LI-USB * USB: ftdi_sio: Add ID for Ionics PlugComputer * USB: xhci: Remove buggy assignment in next_trb() * USB: io_ti: check firmware version before updating * USB: ftdi_sio: fix endianess of max packet size * USB: CP210x Fix Break On/Off * USB: pl2303: New vendor and product id * USB: add device IDs for igotu to navman * USB: option: add Celot CT-650 * powerpc: Fix typo in uImage target * drm: stop information leak of old kernel stack. * drm/radeon/kms: fix typo in radeon_compute_pll_gain * netlink: fix compat recvmsg * ALSA: intel8x0: Mute External Amplifier by default for ThinkPad X31 * fixes for using make 3.82 * oprofile: add support for Intel processor model 30 * Oprofile: Change CPUIDS from decimal to hex, and add some comments * ext4: consolidate in_range() definitions * pcmcia: avoid buffer overflow in pcmcia_setup_isa_irq * vmscan: raise the bar to PAGEOUT_IO_SYNC stalls * act_nat: the checksum of ICMP doesn't have pseudo header * isdn: fix information leak * can: add limit for nframes and clean up signed/unsigned variables * net: Fix a memmove bug in dev_gro_receive() * sparc64: Fix atomic64_t routine return values. * sparc64: Fix rwsem constant bug leading to hangs. * sparc64: Add missing ID to parport probing code. * sunxvr500: Ignore secondary output PCI devices. * slab: fix object alignment * drm/i915: add 'reclaimable' to i915 self-reclaimable page allocations * drm/i915: fix hibernation since i915 self-reclaim fixes * mm: make stack guard page logic use vm_prev pointer * mm: make the mlock() stack guard page checks stricter * mm: make the vma list be doubly linked * dm ioctl: release _hash_lock between devices in remove_all * dm mpath: fix NULL pointer dereference when path parameters missing * drm/i915/edp: Flush the write before waiting for PLLs * pxa3xx: fix ns2cycle equation * ath5k: disable ASPM L0s for all cards * nfs: Add lookupcache to displayed mount options * ARM: Tighten check for allowable CPSR values * hwmon: (pc87360) Fix device resource declaration * Fix the nested PR lock calling issue in ACL * x86, apic: Fix apic=debug boot crash * x86, hotplug: Serialize CPU hotplug to avoid bringup concurrency issues * ocfs2/dlm: remove potential deadlock -V3 * ocfs2/dlm: avoid incorrect bit set in refmap on recovery master * ocfs2: Count more refcount records in file system fragmentation. * ocfs2 fix o2dlm dlm run purgelist (rev 3) * ocfs2/dlm: fix a dead lock * ocfs2: do not overwrite error codes in ocfs2_init_acl * ALSA: hda - Fix missing stream for second ADC on Realtek ALC260 HDA codec * ALSA: emu10k1 - delay the PCM interrupts (add pcm_irq_delay parameter) * ALSA: riptide - Fix detection / load of firmware files * ASoC: Remove DSP mode support for WM8776 * ASoC: Fix inverted mute controls for WM8580 * memstick: fix hangs on unexpected device removal in mspro_blk ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Assignee: Brad Figg (brad-figg) Status: In Progress ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Brad Figg (brad-figg) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New = In Progress -- Lucid update to 2.6.32.21 stable release https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625392 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 625381] [NEW] Packages from a PPA give a misleading error message when you use ubuntu-bug on them,
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apport I have chromium-browser installed from a PPA. I wanted to file a bug on it, so I did ubuntu-bug chromium-browser on the command line. I got an error message saying: The problem cannot be reported: This is not a genuine Ubuntu package This is not a helpful error message and is misleading. I have a few issues with the wording. (a) The problem cannot be reported - It is more accurate to say that it can't be reported in Launchpad or ubuntu-bug. This message might make a user think that it is impossible to report this problem anywhere, at all. Some suggestions for better wording: The problem cannot be reported using this tool., The problem cannot be reported at this time., The problem cannot be reported with the ubuntu-bug programme. The problem cannot be reported in Launchpad. (b) This is not a genuine Ubuntu package. This phrasing is because this package is from a PPA. This wording might mislead a user to think that there is something fake or 'non-genuine' about the software package. They might think that there is something wrong with the package, the software they have installed, or their computer/ubuntu install. I suggest these more honest wordings: This package is not maintained by the wider Ubuntu community, This package is not part of the Ubuntu software ecosystem This package is from a specialised software source ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: apport 1.13.3-0ubuntu2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-24.41-generic 2.6.32.15+drm33.5 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-24-generic i686 ApportLog: Architecture: i386 Date: Fri Aug 27 16:26:28 2010 PackageArchitecture: all ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_IE.utf8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: apport ** Affects: apport (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 lucid -- Packages from a PPA give a misleading error message when you use ubuntu-bug on them, https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625381 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 487858] Re: cannot install software
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures. At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). Thanks! When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs. ** Changed in: software-center (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- cannot install software https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/487858 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
