Ofcourse you can suggest anything you like. That's why we're here, right. ;)

And now, did you mean something like this?

I must say that I also considered leaving only white overlays, like on
Ubuntu official CD sleeves, but I wanted to include this Ubuntu orange
somehow, cause it appears everywhere, from Ubuntu website, to Ubuntu
itself.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu DVD Packaging Artwork

2011-02-10 Thread Angus Fretwell
Yeah, after lining the two up, the orange adds a nice definition.

The only thing I would change is the text (get involved, explore and install,
etc.). Something about the way it's layed out feels a bit off. I think the two
columns should be more even, and you could try bumping up the line height a
little bit, so it doesn't look so squashed. Also try swapping top tips and
explore install so it's a little more balanced.

This is the best I managed to do with back info text. It's a bit hard
to make it look more coherent cause the right colon contains much more
text. And when I change the line spacing on left colon then it looks
more outplaced, than it's with normal formatting. So i added one line
in left colon, and I edited the right one to make it more even. Also I
made some small changes on side tab and icons, so how does it look
now, some feedback would be nice.

So I guess I should stick with this one for now. :)

This is what next full pack will contains after some useful suggestions here.

- Two versions of this universal cover in standard PNG, 32-bit and 64-bit.
- Two versions of CD/DVD labels also.
- One psd version of CD/DVD label, so that anyone can add actual
release version number if want.
- One cover without front TUX sticker, and in addition I will add a
psd stickers that you can edit on your own, like putting the version
number on it, and then pasting it on a cover, if you want a cover to
contains a current edition mark.

[ubuntu-uk] Lubuntu

2011-02-10 Thread gazz
By the way, thanks to whomever suggested Lubuntu for my eeePC. I've
finally had to bite down on the fact that it can't run Ubuntu Netbook
sensibly with a 4GB USB HD even stripping out locales and other clutter
and constantly cleaning up apt like a madwoman.

Xubuntu's too big as well. I tried Puppy but whilst it's a really good
little distro for non-techie's to do web/email/office, it's a bit of a
shag learning a slack-based distro so you can get it to do *anything*
else - and you end up having to compile everything onto it cos the
package handler isn't really functional yet - then the compiler breaks
if you install it to HD! DSL is grumpyl. I was contemplating slapping
XFCE on Debian or something but obviously that isn't going to work for
the non-techie users. I'm really looking for something with oob
functinality for non-tech users that can revive the clapped out PCs used
by lots of smaller charities (besides something low-hassle for the
eeePC).

Lubuntu does the job, your basic web/email/office stuff oob, and I can
get stuff I need like sshfs and nfs clients etc working on the cli in 10
mins. Chromium gets on my nerves but I thought I'd try Midori which
seems OK. Pity the swiftfox/swiftweasel projects seem a bit lacking in
energy - need the functionality of FF but it just hogs ridiculous
amounts of HD :(

Anyway, Lubuntu's the first 'lite' Ubuntu flavour that really does the
job oob yet is a grown-up OS which I could feel confident giving to
non-techie charity orgs too.

I would suggest a look at Bodhi linux. It is Ubuntu based, and comes on
a 380MB CD image. It has Enlightenment E17 as a desktop/window manager,
and comes with very little else other than Firefox 4 beta10 and
synaptic. What I like about it is I don't have to remove anything to
make a small installation, just add what I think will fit. I add about
150MB of packages for an installation which fits on a 4GB drive,
including Thunderbird, VLC, gedit, mythTV-frontend, Gnumeric, Abiword,
and some system utilities like ssh, gvfs (for connect to server in
Nautilus) and avahi (for local name resolution). The end result is about
2GB, which still leaves room for upgrades and some swap on a 4GB drive.

Enlightenment is modular, so anything you don't want or need you can
just unload, and the really unusual feature is that if it crashes, it
doesn't take all you apps down with it, so you can restart it and still
see all your apps running unharmed. It hasn't crashed on me yet though,
so I haven't tested that out.

Re: Updating configuration files

There's one thing I miss from my days running Gentoo, and no, it's not
the unholy number of hours it takes to upgrade due to recompiles. :)

When a system configuration file gets updated, emerge gives you a
richer set of options for dealing with changes. I'm reminded of this
with the just upgraded ntp package, which modifies /etc/ntp.conf.

Debian/Ubuntu gives you the option to:

   * Keep your version
   * Install the new maintainers version
   * See the diff
   * Drop into a shell to deal with the situation

I think these are insufficient. What I really want to do is merge my
local changes with the new package version, and I'd like the tool to
   help me do it.

emerge gives me several other options. It's been ages since I ran
Gentoo so I don't remember all the details, but one other option was
   extremely helpful:

   * Interactively merge local changes with the new version of the config
   * file

So these days, there are three major paradigms used for configuration
  file management within Debian packages.

   - conffiles - this is the built-in dpkg prompt you refer to, with the

incomplete set of choices. Really, this is only a suitable mechanism
for configuration files that will rarely, *if ever*, need to be
changed by either the local admin or the package maintainer.

   - templates spit out by maintainer scripts - this avoids the annoying

prompts, but also generally doesn't give the admin very much support
for updating to new package defaults because the maintainer doesn't
go to the effort of manually merging the changes in.

   - ucf. This option *does* store the original version of the file on
   disk

in order to support a three-way merge, which makes it possible to
offer better options on upgrade. Not quite the same as an
interactive merge, but an interactive merge option could be added
here without too much extra work.

This last is the one is the way to go, but it really should be pulled
into dpkg itself. I don't recall if Sean's patches were based on ucf or
not. In the meantime, use of ucf requires explicit action by the
package maintainer, so it's generally only the real problem children
that get converted over to its use.

I guess the fourth that I see in use is having a directory of files that
are loaded to build the configuration file. Honestly, this is the one
that I prefer most of the time as it means that the base file always
upgrades. For sure, this doesn't work for all files, but it seems like
if effort is going into configuration files it would be worth converting
all that can to the directory method.

Some packages already do this. See amavisd-new as an example.

Natty Schedule Adjustments (Beta 2 added, Release Candidate dropped)

2011-02-10 Thread Kate Stewart
Dear Developers,

After reviewing the plans at the end of this release, it was felt that a
release candidate release on April 21st showing up just before the
easter holiday would be a bit late.

After discussing this with the key stakeholders and not getting any
negative feedback from them or in the weekly release meetings, we're
going to go ahead and add a Beta 2 for this release, and drop the
Release Candidate from the Natty Schedule [1].

Natty Beta 2 will be on April 14th, 2011.

If you anticipate any problems due to this change, please let us know.

Thanks,

Kate Stewart
on behalf of Ubuntu release team

Delaying today's translations videocast

2011-02-10 Thread David Planella
Hi translators,

The next biweekly Ubuntu Translations Videocast was scheduled for today,
but I've had to delay it for next week, so here's just a quick heads up
for those who want to attend.

I've updated the event calendar on:

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ubuntu-translations-with-david-planella

Note: I've created some short clips under the Highlights tab in that
page. I think you might find the last videocast on the translations
workflow interesting, but if you can't watch the whole video, you might
be interested in the parts highlighting the main topics discussed on the
last one.

Regards,
David.

Re: Call for Lucid language pack update testing

2011-02-10 Thread Manx Translators
Hello all,

In case you haven't seen on the wiki page,
when I submitted it, Firefox wasn't translated in lucid, even though
I'd translated it in maverick.
This could just have been it hadn't synchronized in time.
It doesn't particularly bother me if it doesn't work in Lucid,
I just wanted to inform people in case they've had the same problem,

Thanks,

Reuben (Manx translator)

[Ubuntu-BR] Login Ubuntu

2011-02-10 Thread Peterson Pinheiro

A pergunta é :

o ubuntu usa.
Onde estão esses drivers adicionais??

2011-02-10 Thread Marlon

*Alternate CD
Unlike Live CD, Alternate CD is a text mode installer. It requires an
experienced Linux user to operate. It provides more drivers, such as
FakeRAID, software RAID and some other drivers and features. You can also
choose LVM and encrytped directory too. It is more flexible and powerful
compare with Live CD. The final product is a graphical desktop environment.
It can install for a lesser memory machine, thanks to the text mode
installer.*
Fonte:
http://samiux.wordpress.com/2009/03/19/the-different-between-ubuntu-desktop-alternate-cd-and-server-cd/

*The alternate installer installs each package individually and usually
takes about forty or fifty minutes longer than the live cd installer. Sure
the live cd take a minute or two longer to boot, but it still comes out to
being way faster using the live cd.*

[Ubuntu-BR] [Off Topic] De volta à lista, mail recuperado

2011-02-10 Thread nethell
Pessoal,

do meu domínio.

Debian GNU/kFreeBSD (Debian GNU/kFreeBSD
chroot-окружении FreeBSD);

BASH-scripting

JAVA_OPTS=-Xms512m -Xmx512m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m $JAVA_OPTS
 -Djava.awt.headless=true
 -Xmx512m
 JAVA_OPTS

 If
 [root@bass-copy check_unix_config]# cat
 /opt/tmp/confluence-3.4.7-std/bin/setenv.sh
 JAVA_OPTS=-Xms512m -Xmx512m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m $JAVA_OPTS
 -Djava.awt.headless=true
 export JAVA_OPTS

echo If you encounter issues starting up Confluence Standalone, please see
 the Installation guide at
 http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Confluence+Installation+Guide;

# awk -F '-Xmx' '{print $2}' /opt/tmp/confluence-3.4.7-std/bin/setenv.sh|awk
-F 'm' '{print $1}'

Re: [Bug 713204] Re: package backuppc 3.1.0-9ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-02-10 Thread John Brown
Andreas

FYI - after mucking about for days in an effort to get the backuppc user
with the right permissions and a known password (using htpasswd), I
eventually did a *complete* removal of the backuppc package in Synaptic;
then deleted the backuppc user; then reinstalled.

This time it went in just fine, giving the dialogue box about the creation
of the backuppc user and password. So, although I do not recall having
previously put a copy of backuppc on my machine and then deleting it without
having ever used it, it looks as though that *is* the likely source of the
problem. The only difference between this reinstall and the previous one was
that this time I deleted the backuppc user (as hinted at in your email). So,
problem solved.

Thanks, John

[Bug 714335] Re: KVM SMP Linux Guests Hang

I also want to mention that in my last comment, Launchpad turned the
upstream bug number into a hyperlink and referenced an Ubuntu bug of the
same number; that link is not correct, but I can't edit it because I
don't have access. Please follow the first link in post #11 (the one on

[Bug 714335] Re: KVM SMP Linux Guests Hang

2011-02-10 Thread Brian Knoll
Okay, I have done some more research and testing and I now think the
following upstream KVM bug is the problem:

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detailaid=2968899group_id=180599atid=893831

Upstream KVM bug 2968899 describes a bug which causes the SMP guest to
lock up when setting the time. I disabled NTP on my guests to test
this, and my guests boot fine without NTP. Obviously, that's not an
acceptable workaround because having managed time is a requirement for
any well-managed machine, especially a server.

But it does look to me like the bug is an upstream bug. However, it
doesn't look like it's getting any attention from anyone, unfortunately.

[Bug 298823] Re: Exim mail failure messages go to local address, even if no local delivery is available

2011-02-10 Thread James Page
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if
you could test a current, supported, Ubuntu version. If you can test it,
and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload
updated logs by running apport-collect 298823, and any other logs that
are relevant for this particular issue.

Thanks

[Bug 702714] Re: package exim4-base 4.71-3ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new post-removal script returned error exit status 1

2011-02-10 Thread James Page
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying to help make
Ubuntu better.

Please try using fuser -v to return the process locking process
/var/cache/debconf/config.dat (if any). Kill the offending process and
try performing the install again.

More often than not this is only a transient situation and fuser will
return nothing. Simply performing the update again should solve this
issue.

Please update this bug report if this resolves your issue.

Thanks

[Bug 715152] Re: ntp wont run on IPv6 only host unless lo has 127.0.0.1 address

2011-02-10 Thread James Page
Confirmed on a Lucid image; however the only way I was able to remove
the 127.0.0.1 address from lo was to use the following command:

ip addr del 127.0.0.1/32 dev lo

ntp then fails to start. As stated in the original bug report, adding
the address back to the interface fixes the issue.

How where you able to permanently disable the ipv4 address of the lo
device?

[Bug 708023] Re: exim 4.74 released fixes CVE-2011-0017

2011-02-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package exim4 - 4.69-2ubuntu0.3

---
exim4 (4.69-2ubuntu0.3) hardy-security; urgency=low

  * SECURITY UPDATE: local privilege escalation via alternate config file
(LP: #697934)
- debian/patches/80_CVE-2010-4345.dpatch: backport massive behaviour-
altering changes from upstream git to fix issue.
- debian/patches/81_CVE-2010-4345-docs.dpatch: backport documentation
  changes.
- debian/patches/67_unnecessaryCopt.dpatch: Do not use exim's -C option
in utility scripts. This would not work with ALT_CONFIG_PREFIX.
  Patch obtained from Debian's 4.69-9+lenny2.
- Build with WHITELIST_D_MACROS=OUTGOING. After this security update,
exim will not regain root privileges (usually necessary for local
delivery) if the -D option was used. Macro identifiers listed in
WHITELIST_D_MACROS are exempted from this restriction. mailscanner
  (4.79.11-2.2) uses -DOUTGOING.
- Build with TRUSTED_CONFIG_LIST=/etc/exim4/trusted_configs. After this
security update, exim will not re-gain root privileges (usually
necessary for local delivery) if the -C option was used. This makes
it impossible to start a fully functional damon with an alternate
configuration file. /etc/exim4/trusted_configs (can) contain a list
of filenames (one per line, full path given) to which this
  restriction does not apply.
- debian/exim4-daemon-*.NEWS: Add description of changes. Thanks to
Debian and Andreas Metzler for the text.
- CVE-2010-4345
  * SECURITY UPDATE: arbitrary file append via symlink attack (LP: #708023)
- debian/patches/82_CVE-2011-0017.dpatch: check setuid and setgid return
  codes in src/exim.c, src/log.c.
- CVE-2011-0017
  * SECURITY UPDATE: denial of service and possible arbitrary code
execution via hard link to another user's file (LP: #609620)
- debian/patches/CVE-2010-2023.dpatch: check for links in
  src/transports/appendfile.c.
- CVE-2010-2023
  * SECURITY UPDATE: denial of service and possible arbitrary code
execution via symlink on a lock file (LP: #609620)
- debian/patches/CVE-2010-2024.dpatch: improve lock file handling in
  src/exim_lock.c, src/transports/appendfile.c.
- CVE-2010-2024
  * debian/rules: disable debconf-updatepo so the security update doesn't
alter translations.

[Bug 566793] Re: [SRU] euca-get-console-output gives first 64k of output, not most recent

2011-02-10 Thread Scott Moser
I really would love to see this fixed in lucid. It is a real pain when
you're trying to debug an instance that has rebooted a couple times. I
lost a couple hours debugging one that I thought was locked during boot
because I only looked at the console output, while the instance was
actually fine.
