Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu DVD Packaging Artwork
Yeah, after lining the two up, the orange adds a nice definition. The only thing I would change is the text (get involved, explore and install, etc.). Something about the way it's layed out feels a bit off. I think the two columns should be more even, and you could try bumping up the line height a little bit, so it doesn't look so squashed. Also try swapping top tips and explore install so it's a little more balanced. On 11/02/2011, at 8:15 AM, Pumpkin Lord wrote: Ofcourse you can suggest anything you like. This is the best I managed to do with back info text. It's a bit hard to make it look more coherent cause the right colon contains much more text. And when I change the line spacing on left colon then it looks more outplaced, than it's with normal formatting. So i added one line in left colon, and I edited the right one to make it more even. Also I made some small changes on side tab and icons, so how does it look now, some feedback would be nice. So I guess I should stick with this one for now. :) This is what next full pack will contains after some useful suggestions here. - Two versions of this universal cover in standard PNG, 32-bit and 64-bit. - Two versions of CD/DVD labels also. - One psd version of CD/DVD label, so that anyone can add actual release version number if want. - One cover without front TUX sticker, and in addition I will add a psd stickers that you can edit on your own, like putting the version number on it, and then pasting it on a cover, if you want a cover to contains a current edition mark. -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

[ubuntu-uk] Lubuntu
By the way, thanks to whomever suggested Lubuntu for my eeePC. I've finally had to bite down on the fact that it can't run Ubuntu Netbook sensibly with a 4GB USB HD even stripping out locales and other clutter and constantly cleaning up apt like a madwoman. Xubuntu's too big as well. I tried Puppy but whilst it's a really good little distro for non-techie's to do web/email/office, it's a bit of a shag learning a slack-based distro so you can get it to do *anything* else - and you end up having to compile everything onto it cos the package handler isn't really functional yet - then the compiler breaks if you install it to HD! DSL is grumpyl. I was contemplating slapping XFCE on Debian or something but obviously that isn't going to work for the non-techie users. I'm really looking for something with oob functinality for non-tech users that can revive the clapped out PCs used by lots of smaller charities (besides something low-hassle for the eeePC). Lubuntu does the job, your basic web/email/office stuff oob, and I can get stuff I need like sshfs and nfs clients etc working on the cli in 10 mins. Chromium gets on my nerves but I thought I'd try Midori which seems OK. Pity the swiftfox/swiftweasel projects seem a bit lacking in energy - need the functionality of FF but it just hogs ridiculous amounts of HD :( Anyway, Lubuntu's the first 'lite' Ubuntu flavour that really does the job oob yet is a grown-up OS which I could feel confident giving to non-techie charity orgs too. I would suggest a look at Bodhi linux. It is Ubuntu based, and comes on a 380MB CD image. It has Enlightenment E17 as a desktop/window manager, and comes with very little else other than Firefox 4 beta10 and synaptic. What I like about it is I don't have to remove anything to make a small installation, just add what I think will fit. I add about 150MB of packages for an installation which fits on a 4GB drive, including Thunderbird, VLC, gedit, mythTV-frontend, Gnumeric, Abiword, and some system utilities like ssh, gvfs (for connect to server in Nautilus) and avahi (for local name resolution). The end result is about 2GB, which still leaves room for upgrades and some swap on a 4GB drive. Enlightenment is modular, so anything you don't want or need you can just unload, and the really unusual feature is that if it crashes, it doesn't take all you apps down with it, so you can restart it and still see all your apps running unharmed. It hasn't crashed on me yet though, so I haven't tested that out. http://www.bodhilinux.com -- JimP -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

I'm reminded of this with the just upgraded ntp package, which modifies /etc/ntp.conf. Debian/Ubuntu gives you the option to: * Keep your version * Install the new maintainers version * See the diff * Drop into a shell to deal with the situation I think these are insufficient. What I really want to do is merge my local changes with the new package version, and I'd like the tool to help me do it. emerge gives me several other options. It's been ages since I ran Gentoo so I don't remember all the details, but one other option was extremely helpful: * Interactively merge local changes with the new version of the config * file So these days, there are three major paradigms used for configuration file management within Debian packages. - conffiles - this is the built-in dpkg prompt you refer to, with the incomplete set of choices. Really, this is only a suitable mechanism for configuration files that will rarely, *if ever*, need to be changed by either the local admin or the package maintainer. - templates spit out by maintainer scripts - this avoids the annoying prompts, but also generally doesn't give the admin very much support for updating to new package defaults because the maintainer doesn't go to the effort of manually merging the changes in. - ucf. This option *does* store the original version of the file on disk in order to support a three-way merge, which makes it possible to offer better options on upgrade. Not quite the same as an interactive merge, but an interactive merge option could be added here without too much extra work. This last is the one is the way to go, but it really should be pulled into dpkg itself. I don't recall if Sean's patches were based on ucf or not. In the meantime, use of ucf requires explicit action by the package maintainer, so it's generally only the real problem children that get converted over to its use. I guess the fourth that I see in use is having a directory of files that are loaded to build the configuration file. Honestly, this is the one that I prefer most of the time as it means that the base file always upgrades. For sure, this doesn't work for all files, but it seems like if effort is going into configuration files it would be worth converting all that can to the directory method. Some packages already do this. See amavisd-new as an example. Natty Schedule Adjustments (Beta 2 added, Release Candidate dropped)
Dear Developers, After reviewing the plans at the end of this release, it was felt that a release candidate release on April 21st showing up just before the easter holiday would be a bit late. After discussing this with the key stakeholders and not getting any negative feedback from them or in the weekly release meetings, we're going to go ahead and add a Beta 2 for this release, and drop the Release Candidate from the Natty Schedule [1]. Re: Call for Lucid language pack update testing
Hello all, In case you haven't seen on the wiki page, when I submitted it, Firefox wasn't translated in lucid, even though I'd translated it in maverick. This could just have been it hadn't synchronized in time. It doesn't particularly bother me if it doesn't work in Lucid, I just wanted to inform people in case they've had the same problem, Thanks, Reuben (Manx translator) -- ubuntu-translators mailing list ubuntu-translators@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-translators

It requires an experienced Linux user to operate. It provides more drivers, such as FakeRAID, software RAID and some other drivers and features. You can also choose LVM and encrytped directory too. It is more flexible and powerful compare with Live CD. The final product is a graphical desktop environment. It can install for a lesser memory machine, thanks to the text mode installer.* Fonte: http://samiux.wordpress.com/2009/03/19/the-different-between-ubuntu-desktop-alternate-cd-and-server-cd/ mas retiro o que disse sobre ser mais rápido *The alternate installer installs each package individually and usually takes about forty or fifty minutes longer than the live cd installer. Re: [Bug 713204] Re: package backuppc 3.1.0-9ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Andreas FYI - after mucking about for days in an effort to get the backuppc user with the right permissions and a known password (using htpasswd), I eventually did a *complete* removal of the backuppc package in Synaptic; then deleted the backuppc user; then reinstalled. This time it went in just fine, giving the dialogue box about the creation of the backuppc user and password. So, although I do not recall having previously put a copy of backuppc on my machine and then deleting it without having ever used it, it looks as though that *is* the likely source of the problem. The only difference between this reinstall and the previous one was that this time I deleted the backuppc user (as hinted at in your email). So, problem solved. [Bug 714335] Re: KVM SMP Linux Guests Hang
Okay, I have done some more research and testing and I now think the following upstream KVM bug is the problem: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detailaid=2968899group_id=180599atid=893831 Upstream KVM bug 2968899 describes a bug which causes the SMP guest to lock up when setting the time. I disabled NTP on my guests to test this, and my guests boot fine without NTP. Obviously, that's not an acceptable workaround because having managed time is a requirement for any well-managed machine, especially a server. But it does look to me like the bug is an upstream bug. However, it doesn't look like it's getting any attention from anyone, unfortunately. ** Bug watch added: SourceForge.net Tracker #2968899 http://sourceforge.net/support/tracker.php?aid=2968899 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to qemu-kvm in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/714335 Title: KVM SMP Linux Guests Hang -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
