Re: Idea for a new test in laptop QA
2011/10/18 Julien Cornuwel jul...@cornuwel.net: Hi, I recently reported bug #875686 and realised it isn't tested in the laptop QA. I really think it should be, as it is a very common situation to laptop users (closing the lid off their laptop). Hi Julien. As a default action, closing the lid should suspend the system. So I think (but can be wrong) that your issue is due to a suspend problem. In this situation, it's not necessary to add a new testcase because it's covered by the suspend/resume one. What I want is to become Linux Certified - initially the LPIC-1 is the certification I need by the look of it. There is an Open University beginner's course. This might be a good start to getting qualified but the next enrolment is Oct 2010 according to the webpage. Hope this helps, John John, What competence level does the Ubuntu Professional Course start at? Barry T Hi Barry, I would say that it's a good introductory course to using the command line within different structured areas of Ubuntu : https://shop.canonical.com/product_info.php?products_id=533 Any experience using command line is useful. It is aimed at Sys Admins. After a while the knowledge needed is extensive, so is the knowledge gained : there is no end to the learning process. With a background in networks, I wanted a structured course in order to gain experience with Linux/Unix command line, which is extensive. This course has really got me into Ubuntu. I found the book 'Ubuntu Linux' by Chris Nergus and Francois Caen to be useful in broadening and sometimes deepening the course. The Ubuntu Prof Course has more command line than the Linux equivalent LPIC-1 and is less explanatory. The two are now considered separate qualifications. Although the Ubuntu Prof Course really needs to be done in the context of providing the basis for the Server and Cloud Computing Courses. Each module ends with a quiz and the course is just completed : unless there is a surprise exam waiting for me ! The course is self-paced with a maximum of one year to access the materials on-line. One surprising aspect of the course was that i was also able to quickly understand the Windows file and command system. My hope is that the Server and Cloud Courses come up to the professional level of Cisco Certification Courses. It would be good to build learning groups around the Ubuntu Prof Course. Hope This Helps ! John -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
[Desktop12.04-Topic] Handling Failure Gracefully
Late topic... In the real world there are always going to be failures, triggered by things like software bugs, hardware failures and misconfiguration. Ubuntu should where possible handle common failures and provide predictable feedback to the user that the system is broken. I think we have the intention that most of this should work already, but it would be good to check we've worked out the right failures to handle and to methodically test they all work in 12.10. Some common failure cases and what should happen: - Failure to start X server - Run failsafe X server - Failure to start any X server - Show error on text console - Failure to start greeter - Run X server with error message - Failure to start session - Return to greeter with error message - Failure of compiz/unity during session - restart compiz/unity - Failure to start application - show error message - ... --Robert -- ubuntu-desktop mailing list ubuntu-desktop@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-desktop

Korean users: request for comments on switch to ttf-nanum fonts
Hi all! In bug #836430¹ (and associated merge proposals) we have a request to switch the default fonts for Korean locales from ttf-unfonts-core to ttf-nanum. It seems that ChromeOS and OS X are both using these fonts. All the pieces are ready to make this change, but I'm not a native Korean speaker and so I'd like to ensure that this change has broad support before it's made. If no-one has any objections to this change I propose that it be made in 2 weeks, after everyone's back from UDS. That should give interested parties long enough to raise any problems. If people do have objections to the change then they should be resolved first, obviously. ¹: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/836430 signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel

With love, Steve This was a public upload that was sent to a mailing list monitored by Ubuntu developers that resulted in a license violation. The reason I sent it to the list was 2 fold. First, that others should be aware of such things (i.e. possible license violations, although it was Colin who actually spelled that out properly). Second, that I was sure that I wasn't going to be the only one to raise an eyebrow about this. In order to keep everyone on the same page, I moved the discussion to the ubuntu-devel list. This has been done before. This is not about pointing fingers, but about raising awareness and getting things fixed. We all make mistakes. Sometimes, one person's error can be a learning lesson for everyone. I certainly hope no one is looking down on Nicolas for this, I certainly am not. In fact, it's because Nicolas did something right, that this was able to be caught at all. He included the changelogs from Debian properly in his upload which allowed the merge to be contrasted with what was done in Debian. User interface defect: Keyboard settings preference pane
[The Ubuntu website says feature and policy discussions go here, so here goes.] In the System Settings control-panel thing, there is a preference pane called Keyboard. The Keyboard preference pane has a Typing tab, which allows the user to set the delay and speed for key repeats when a key is held down, as well as to set the blinking speed for a cursor in text fields. The problem is, this preference pane does not provide a text field to demonstrate the effects of the user's settings. Thus, in order to test and observe the effects of his choices, the user must switch to some other application and select a text field; if he finds it unsatisfactory and wishes to adjust the speed or the delay, he must switch back to the pane, make the adjustment, and switch again to test and observe the new setting, and so on. The repeated switching is in a sense a minor pain, but it is a pain, and it interferes with the task of rapidly iterating to find a delay that is as short as possible without being too short. It could and should easily be fixed, by adding a text field to the preference pane; there is even a good-size empty space at the bottom where it belongs. For extra credit, I would be interested to see numbers--I'm guessing the delay and speed are controlled by number of milliseconds (before|between) key-repeats, and I would be interested to see those numbers rather than just a slider bar that says Short/Slow on one side and Long/Fast on the other side. (You could keep the slider bar interface, but also constantly display a number based on the slider's position; you could even permit the user to edit that number directly, and then when the user either hits return or moves focus away from the number box, attempt to set the slider and the preference to that value; if it is out of bounds or otherwise illegal, then set it to the closest legal value or leave it as is. Naming the units should probably be done in a tooltip explanation: it's there for the curious and doesn't bother the busy.) I would be interested to learn my reaction time in milliseconds and to get a feel for sub-second intervals, and also I'd be pleased to understand and control exactly what this preference tool does. For further extra credit, put the Short end of the Delay slider bar on the same side of the window as the Fast end of the Speed sliders--currently it is on the opposite side. The fast-reflexed, impatient user who wants a short delay almost certainly wants a fast key repeat rate as well. It just makes things a little bit nicer--smoother--more logical, if this user is led to drag both sliders in the same direction rather than in opposite directions. As a general comment, I imagine these kinds of things are written once and then not touched again for a long time (unless some determined curmudgeon like me writes a report like this). I don't think Ubuntu is going to go away; I imagine you guys basically plan for it to last forever, and it has... 12 million users at the moment. So, while this may be a minor thing, please take the time to do it right. --John Boyle *Science is what we understand well enough to explain to a computer. Why the two step recovery mode?
Hello everyone, I'd like to know the motivation behind the change made to the recovery mode in Oneiric. For those who don't know: selecting the '(recovery mode)' entry in GRUB now stops in a read-only mode with following menu: Recovery Menu (limited read-only menu) * resume Resume normal boot * fsck Check all file systems (will exit read-only mode) * remount Remount / read/write and mount all other file systems * root Drop to root shell prompt After selecting 'remount' (and pressing Enter after a successful remount), a second menu shows up: Recovery Menu * resume Resume normal boot * cleanTry to make free space * dpkg Repair broken packages * grub Update grub bootloader * netroot Drop to root shell prompt with networking * root Drop to root shell prompt So far so good. The problem with this is, that users don't realize that something has changed. They follow some guide involving using the recovery mode to get to a root shell prompt, they see that option in the first menu, and land in a read-only environment instead. The result: This doesn't work! How can I remount the file system? I think my file system is damaged. To ask the obvious question: Why haven't those menus be merged? Three of the four entries in the first menu will leave the read-only mode, so why not add 'fsck' and 'read-only' to the second one and make lots of authors and users happy again? :) Greetings, Hernando Torque -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel

This part runs using the dpkg-deb from outside the build chroot, and outside the build chroot we're not running precise - we're running lucid. So you're going to get this error in the build log of any package that uses .xz, whether or not you add the Pre-Depends, and should ignore it. As Micah says, the error we need to care about is not a build-time error at all; it's the archive check that blocks the *upload* of a package that doesn't pass muster. So there's nothing wrong with your sbuild setup that you aren't seeing this locally. Any idea why it succeeded in sbuild, and do you have any other suggestions for testing such package builds locally before uploading? Fine-toothed-combing of the merge delta, and, when all else fails, that's what the archive check is there for. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Re: data.tar.xz support added to Launchpad
Thanks Micah and Steve for the great explanations. On Oct 25, 2011, at 03:18 PM, Micah Gersten wrote: It's a check on upload and not during the build would be my guess. Maybe we should add a lintian warning/error if it uses .xz debs w/out the pre-depends. I think that could help, but it's also not a huge deal to add the Pre-Depends and bump the version number. It's pretty obvious from the error message what the problem was (even if the ultimate location of the problem wasn't). If it was added to lintian, I think it should be an error because warnings can sometimes get overlooked, and this is a pretty severe failure. But this makes me think of another question: why didn't the Debian package have that same Pre-Depends. Extrapolating from Steve's explanation, my guess is that they don't have the same distro-version restriction setup that we do (i.e. outside the chroot). So what would happen if I just sync'd m2crypto instead of merging it? Would it still fail without the Pre-Depends? (my guess: yes). This would probably force me to add the Pre-Depends and upload a 1ubuntu1 version, since we'd be carrying a delta. Unless i could convince the Debian maintainer to add that line for us. It wouldn't have any negative consequences for Debian, would it? Re: Ubuntu Studio 11.10 and the Goals for 12.04
Hi, I have been using Ubuntu Studio for several years now and I love it, Ardour is my favorite daw... I have stayed with 10.04 + LXDE though because it is pretty stable and my laptop is 6 years old so I fear that upgrading the system will slow things down too much. I would happily help with, or take care of, updating the website (depending on how much there is to do). Building and maintaining web pages is something I am pretty good at, so I feel this is a way I can contribute. You can check my work here : http://pranawebdesign.com Please send me instructions on what there is to do and how to join in. Is there a separate mailing list or something for people contributing to the project? Cheers, Robin On 10/24/2011 04:08 AM, Scott Lavender wrote: Ubuntu Studio 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot is released and I offer these simple, direct reflections about it and the future. As usual, it seems my tenor is positive and upbeat, despite the somewhat dismal context. Epitomizing simple and direct statements: this is kinda a 'meh' release and it's my fault. Fundamentally I believe this to be a stable and functional release. But it has an unfinished or unpolished look due to the XFCE transition remaining incomplete. The team suffered some difficulties this cycle, but it is still my responsibility and, therefore, my fault. However, reflections have given way to some insight on deficiencies and yielded some plans to action that should improve our state. Among these deficiencies we experienced: * our goals and scope were too large * our efforts were unfocused and not efficient * started late in development cycle * most new contributors failed to have an impact * code changes lacked follow through So, how will we improve these concerns? Goals/scope to large - We were trying to fix everything and ended up almost completing nothing. We are narrowing our focus for the upcoming release, focusing on what we feel are the minimal priorities in order to yield a quality release. Unfocused, inefficient efforts - It is hard to focus on what to fix and how to fix it without a plan. Using blueprints, creating specifications, developing and assigning a sequential plan of action should help focus our attentions where they are needed and give us the efficiency these goals deserve. This also provides the structure and support for others to assist. Late Start - This is easy...start earlier! And having a well thought out and documented plan helps. The small scope and blueprints with specifications and steps are inspiring and development has already begun! New contributor's lacking impact - This may have been the most frustrating deficiency of all. Obviously the public solicitation of contributors is working, but the tools are lacking to engage and support them. Much like the blueprints, a wiki page for future contributors is being created that includes a listing of topics requiring contribution, background on those topics, and steps necessary to complete them. Code changes uncompleted - This could be summarized as the lack of getting our bzr branch updates pushed to the repository. The fix is a double pronged attack; working more directly with sponsors and developing repository permissions for specific team members. The former will yield results quicker and the later will allow more control but take longer to acquire. So what are our goals? There are few and they are prioritized roughly in the following descending order: * updating website [1] * -lowlatency kernel shipped as default [2] * completing the XFCE transition (including icons and theme) * live dvd [3] * updating the LightDM theme Updating the website may be a surprise as the first item, but the current website makes it seem like the project is abandoned. The update is already in progress and should take a nominal amount of time to accomplish. Shipping a tuned kernel for audio work is befitting a multimedia distribution, hence the second positioning. This one probably has the most difficulty to it and will almost certainly take a lot of navigating to complete. Completing the XFCE transition should not require much explanation. I imagine we will lean heavily on what the Xubuntu team has already done so we can complete this task as efficiently as possible. A live dvd has been a desire for a while. This would ideally include dropping the alternate installation image but hopefully also include Edubuntu's ability to allow the user to select specific components for installation via a GUI. Think of the later as the ability to select specific work flows [4] during installation, e.g. recording a band, creating music with synths/sequencers, podcasting, DJ'ing, film making and creating videos. Updating the LightDM them should also not require much explanation. The LightDM used by Ubuntu Desktop looks nice so I am once again going advocating we steal as much as we can to make our efforts efficient. This may seem like a straightforward, obvious, and diminutive

[Ubuntu-BR] RAID 1 no Ubuntu 11.10
