Re: [ubuntu-uk] U^3 (U-Cubed) An Ubuntu / Debian event happening in Manchester on the 28th August 2010
Hi There, I would be quite interested in attending and helping around :) I live in Yorkshire so i should be able to get to Manchester fairly easily. Daniel On 7 August 2010 14:13, Les lespoun...@gmail.com wrote: On 28th August, MadLab is hosting U^3 (U-Cubed) - an Ubuntu and Upstream UnWorkshop day in collaboration with HacMan, ManLUG and Manchester Free Software. The day is inspired by the Ubuntu Global Jam event which is being held on the same weekend. It's an opportunity to help show users how to get involved in wider distribution work - both in the projects they're using already (maybe Ubuntu, maybe just some specific Free Open Source applications) but also in the upstream projects, such as Debian, Gnome and others, and is inspired by the Ubuntu Global Jam events being held on the same day. We're hoping to find support on the day from people experienced in Ubuntu, but also people that are involved in more than just Ubuntu, so we're reaching out to anyone in the North West UK region to see if people are prepared to help out - even if Ubuntu isn't the Linux distribution you normally would use, so, if you're interested and available between 11am and 9pm and can get to Manchester, or even if you can just be around for part of the day, please get in touch with me, or better yet, go to http://u-cubed.eventbrite.com to reserve a ticket. Because we've got limited space, we can only allocate 60 tickets, and to make it fair for everyone, we're giving people access to these tickets at 1PM on Thursday 12th August (giving people a chance to find out about the event), but if you're able to come along to help out with technical information or guidance, please let me know and I'll make sure that you're invited when the flood gates open! I was speaking to Andy yesterday, it does not appear to be a RAM issue as PHP would stop executing it and give a memory overloaded error. In the mean time, if he hasn't got an external hard drive, I'd suggest he gets one (I bought a 1TB Western Digital USB 2 hard drive yesterday from PC World for £60 using their collect from store option when reserving it on the web site). Then try booting from an Ubuntu CD and you should be able to mount his hard drive and copy any data, pictures, music etc off the drive. At least that way his data is backed up. If you look at Dysentry's thread on his UNR version he explains why lucid is a problem, a problem with some driver not available yet if I remember correctly. I am using that version successfully (his 1.3a with the mods in the first post of his thread). I do a dump of the usb stick occasionally (using dd) so that if an update or whatever mucks it up I can restore my previous working version rather than going back to the start each time. I have not tried the non unr version so I cannot comment on the relative speed. Alan, I was not aware either that it was copyright theft to use another CD with your original license. Infact, i thought the following was true: ttp://download.microsoft.com/download/9/A/9/9A90E11E-43A3-4E7E-A919-961AF15820CA/Refurbished%20PC%20License%20Guide.pdf According to this, any PC that isn't brand new that you are performing a reinstall on is classed as a refurbished PC. From the file: http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/A/9/9A90E11E-43A3-4E7E-A919-961AF15820CA/Refurbished%20PC%20License%20Guide.pdf A new Windows license is not required for a refurbished PC that has: (1) The original Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for a Windows operating system affixed to the PC, and (2) The original recovery media or hard-disk based recovery image associated with the PC. Eventually O2 decided that I should return the unit and they would replace it. Even though I did not really need the built in s/w working I decided to do this in case I ever wanted to sell it, if my planned Ubuntu requirement did not come to fruition (running my weather station). I returned it and a few days later instead of a replacement I got an email saying that they had refunded my money. OK, I thought, it is back on offer at £49.99 so I can just order a new one. Re: [ubuntu-uk] O2 Joggler: deal
A tutorial i made is here for your referance, it should work :) I have noticed that a few of the tutorials do not go in to enough details, and some of them even have the packages wrong, so here is a comprehensive guide to booting UNR on the Joggler :) *1:* plug your **USB stick into another linux machine, format it so that you have an ms-dos partition table, 100MB fat16 partition, and an ext3 partition, this can be done in a program like gparted. Its important that you do this outside of the installer as otherwise, it will fail. - I used a 4GB stick, and i have heard that it fails on much larger sticks (16GB) a way to maybe resolve this would be to make the ext3 partition below 4GB, but i havent tested as i do not have a larger memory stick on me *2:* write the Ubuntu Netbook Remix (here: http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download-netbook) to a disk (it failed when i tried to do it through a VM) and boot from it, once you are at the boot menu, select “Install Ubuntu Netbook Remix” (2nd option) *3:* Once it has loaded the installer, insert the USB stick you partitioned earlier and choose your settings as normal until you get to the partitioning page. Make sure you click “Specify Partitions Manually” *4:* Click on the ext3 partition on the USB drive, and make sure it is used as / but do not format it, then ensure that if you are installing on a computer with linux already on it that it is not using the original swap space, in order to stop it you just need to select the swap partition, and set it to “Do Not Use” *5:* Click next, it should give you a warning about not using the FAT16 partition, and a warning about the swap space, you can safely disregard both of these. *6:* Now that the partitioning is done, keep clicking next until you get to the final screen (where it says install and gives you a rundown) look through the settings and ensure nothing is being formatted, then click “Advance” and untick the “Install bootloader” box. *7:* Click install, and go get some coffee because its going to take a while (mine took just under 2 hours, reminds me of the good ol’ windows 98 installation days) *8:* Download the following two files: http://www.newforumnetwork.com/files/joggler_partition1_fat16.tar.bz2 http://www.newforumnetwork.com/files/joggler_partition2_ext3.tar.gz *9:* Put the USB stick into your linux machine (dont boot from it yet) and extract each archive into the correct partition, make sure they dont go into a folder, when you extract the second archive it will ask about overwriting, just select yes to all. *10:* Go into the second partition on the USB stick and find: /etc/fstab Once you have found it, comment everything out apart from your ext3 partition, and the /proc line. *11:* Insert the USB stick into a USB hub with a keyboard and boot up, give it a minute or two and you should see some terminal code with an error, this is because the Joggler doesn’t save the time, so it thinks its somewhere in 1980, simple fix, drop down to the maintinance shell using ctrl+D and run fsck, then reboot using “shutdown -r now” And thats it, your 11-step guide to booting UNR :D On Wed, May 19, 2010 at 8:25 PM, Tim Powys-Lybbe t...@southfarm.plus.comwrote: On 19 May at 13:04, Kris Douglas krisdoug...@gmail.com wrote: On 19 May 2010 12:41, Tim Powys-Lybbe t...@southfarm.plus.com wrote: On 14 May at 8:27, David david.lut...@gmail.com wrote: snip about abtaining Joggler boxes (a) I plugged the USB stick into my normal Ubuntu machine, a Fusion partition on a mac Pro, and was able to read what was on the stick OK. Checked about:plugins in Firefox and Chromium and they both show up with the correct version. You would normally dump libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ and Firefox will pick it up automatically when you restart it. That is, sudo mv libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so Yup. I copied it to that location and did a search to see where else it might be. It came up with: /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer, and /opt/Adobe AIR/Versions/1.0/Resources To verify whether a random 'libflashplayer.so' is 32 or 64 bit, run ldd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so If it is 64-bit, it should show /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 This should be lots of output and a single line should be that one above. You can use the command ldd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so | grep lib64 which filters and shows you only any lines that have the 'lib64' string in them. If it is 32-bit, it should show many references to 'lib32'. I got a page full of gobbledegook, so I'm assuming it's the latter situation! The frustrating thing is that I've copied the new file to all the locations that came up in the search. There is also a file called npwrapper.libflash.so, with various links to it - I'm thinking this might have something to do with it, but I'm not sure. If I decide to completely remove all flash-related stuff and start from scratch, is it safe to delete all these files? Everything worked out of the box with 32-bit versions, but 64-bit is doing my head in. Never let it be said that I don't like a challenge!!! I am comfortable and familiar with the hardware of my laptop, i have done a few hardware upgrades, and needed to fix the sound card, swap the RAM and a few other things due to previous faults. [ubuntu-uk] Warning to all users of Samba
Hello There, I havent ever made my own email thread before, but i figured i would start with a check and protect message.. Never, ever leave Samba open without due care and attention, all too often i see people telling others to install Samba without warning them of the possible implications, many people are quite lazy, and instead of settings everything up, will just check the Allow guest access button. What i wasnt aware of, is the fact that it broadcasts on Port 139, went straight through my routers firewall and allowed everyone on the internet to access my entire home folder. My computer has been open for months, has had a count of 104 successful access attempts from external IP's all because i forgot about Samba. Well, i have sure learnt my lesson, can anyone tell me what can be gained from my user area in terms of web-passwords? Are they stored in .mozilla folder and easy to get to? -- ~Daniel -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Heyy Chris I set up a JogglerWiki a while back, http://www.jogglerwiki.info The UNR instructions are here: http://www.jogglerwiki.info/index.php?title=Ubuntu_Netbook_Remix Touchscreen does work, however an onscreen keyboard is still a work in progress. I tried Gok but that didn't seem to work properly either. I have the on screen keyboard on the X login though. Thanks, Toby. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/ Nice - Which instructions were you using? Kris, i have had a quick look through the files and they should work with 10.04, but theres only one way to find out ;) If you do manage it, let me know (also let me know if it breaks and i will have a look see why) :) On Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 2:01 PM, Kris Douglas krisdoug...@gmail.com wrote: On 8 April 2010 13:48, Daniel Case danielcas...@googlemail.com wrote: Alright :) I'l put it here and on the etherpad, i mainly followed this guild: http://magician.gforums.de/wiki/index.php5?title=UNE_Installation but a lot of it is wrong, and one of its packages is packaged badly, so iv repackaged them both and attatched: 1: plug your **USB stick into another linux machine, format it so that you have an ms-dos partition table, 100MB fat16 partition, and an ext3 partition, this can be done in a program like gparted. Make sure you click Specify Partitions Manually 4: Click on the ext3 partition on the USB drive, and make sure it is used as /, but do not format it, then ensure that if you are installing on a computer with linux already on it that it is not using the original swap space, in order to stop it you just need to select the swap partition, and set it to Do Not Use 4: Click next, it should give you a warning about not using the FAT16 partition, and a warning about the swap space, you can safely disregard both of these. 5: Now that the partitioning is done, keep clicking next until you get to the final screen (where it says install and gives you a rundown) look through the settings and ensure nothing is being formatted, then click Advance and untick the Install bootloader box. 6: Click install, and go get some coffee because its going to take a while (mine took just under 2 hours, reminds me of the good ol' windows 98 installation days) 7: Download the following two files: http://www.newforumnetwork.com/files/joggler_partition1_fat16.tar.bz2 http://www.newforumnetwork.com/files/joggler_partition2_ext3.tar.gz 8: Put the USB stick into your linux machine (dont boot from it yet) and extract each archive into the correct partition, make sure they dont go into a folder, when you extract the second archive it will ask about overwriting, just select yes to all. 9: Go into the second partition on the USB stick and find: /etc/fstab Once you have found it, comment everything out apart from your ext3 partition, and the /proc line. 10: Insert the USB stick into a USB hub with a keyboard and boot up, give it a minute or two and you should see some terminal code with an error, this is because the Joggler doesn't save the time, so it thinks its somewhere in 1980, simple fix, drop down to the maintinance shell using ctrl+D and run fsck, then reboot using shutdown -r now And thats it, your 10-step guide to booting UNR :D This guide was great thanks, I'm just at the stage where you have to add the files from the archives you linked to. Hmm... I'm very interested. Has anyone on the list actually got one of these yet? I'm wondering what sort of power requirements it has (I gather it doesn't run off a battery which is a shame) but I'm interested to know if it has a fairly standard power supply (such as 12 volt PSU or laptop PSU)? What I'm thinking is maybe something like this would make a great in-car media player (either for playing MP3s or XVid movies to keep the kids quiet on long journeys) at least if it can be powered off a cigarette lighter socket (or alternatively an inverter). Sounds like a good excuse to pop down to the O2 store later on.
