[Bug 1665989] [NEW] Microphone icon showing without sound input device connected

2017-02-19 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
Public bug reported:

What happens: I do not have a microphone connected but the microphone
volume bar is always shown when clicking on the speaker icon in the
system indicator area on the top bar. The mixer does not show any sound
input devices.

What I expect: If I do not have a sound input device connected to my
computer there should be no volume bar to control its volume.

[Bug 1475925] [NEW] kauth-policy-gen missing localization

2015-07-18 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
Public bug reported:

In Kubuntu kauth-policy-gen is used to generate polkit config files
(.policy) for particular packages. Although polkit does currently not
allow localization, UI visible strings are contained in these config
files. The package libqapt which is used by Muon Discover for example
has a fully localized .actions file that is the input for kauth-policy-
gen. However, those translations are currently not used since kauth-
policy-gen only extracts the English version of each action defined.

Effects of this bug:
Translations for some UI strings in Kubuntu affecting security-relevant user
interactions (e.g. asking for password to install updates) are not translated.

Possible workaround/solution:
Adapt kauth-policy-gen to create .policy files with action names according to
the current system locale setting. This solution is very simple and does not
require polkit to be localized since kauth-policy-gen will simply write strings
in the .policy file that match the users' language.

The signal has improved with the new driver. Network manager now reports
58 to 63 Mb/s under connection info. This is about the same as my

Please backport this driver to Ubuntu 14.04!

[Bug 1379524] [NEW] Weak wifi signal and bluetooth missing firmware

2014-10-09 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
Public bug reported:

On a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 on my new HP Pavilion 15-020ng with
Broadcom BCM43142 hybrid wifi/bluetooth chipset the official driver from
Broadcom does not work correctly. On 2.4 GHz the wifi signal is so low
that the connection is interrupted on a regular basis (network manager
shows 26 Mb/s), other devices (notebook, tablet) do have a normal signal
at the same position and even this laptop has a good signal with Windows
7 (Dual-Boot).

In addition, Bluetooth does not work because the driver reports missing
firmware but there does not seem to be official firmware available
anywhere.

The exact device name:
08:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n
[14e4:4365] (rev 01)

The 5 Ghz frequency seems to be not supported by the driver according to
the README file and does not work at all. My router is set to use
WPA2-PSK with AES, which is the only possible option besides WPA or
WPA/WPA2-mixed.

I am using the official wl driver that was installed by default, also
tried reinstalling via sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
--reinstall without improvement and sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off.
Also blacklisted b43, brcmsmac and bcma as suggested by Linux

[Bug 1379524] Re: Weak wifi signal and bluetooth missing firmware

2014-10-09 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
I just noticed there is a new version of the Broadcom driver available
from their website: 6.30.223.248

I will try to build and test this driver tomorrow and report back. According to
the changelog it might fix the problem:
Upgraded to support 3.11.x.

Readme is here:
http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README_6.30.223.248.txt

If it fixes the problem, a backport would be great since this version of
the driver is currently not in 14.04 which uses kernel 3.13.

[Bug 1220426] Re: [nvidia-prime]Freeze while using touchpad

2014-09-12 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
Great. If that's true the question is which package fixes the bug.

Since NVIDIA was able to reproduce this issue a while ago, any news on
this or any hint which package is actually causing the bug?

It does not look like it is nvidia-prime according to the changelog.

It is just kind of disappointing when it takes over a month to fix
critical bugs not to talk about non-critical but annoying bugs…

Ok, THAT is interesting. Maybe it is just a coincidence that you mention
Civilization V but this was also when I encountered the bug for the
first time. Since than it has also occurred when NOT playing that game
but it was the first time.

On my system (Acer Aspire 5750G) the problem is also not sporadic but
occurs very often, mostly after a few minutes. If using the workaround
to switch to a different VT and switch back the bug will be back within
seconds or minutes.

No luck, issue is back. It happend after the system was running for

[Bug 1220426] Re: [nvidia-prime]Freeze while using touchpad

2014-08-13 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
Hi All,

I had this issue on a Acer Aspire 5750G. Today I updated my system with
the latest NVIDIA driver 343 from the xorg-edgers repository. Because
Ubuntu would not let me login (black screen after entering password in
lightdm) after the update and command line switching did also not work I
reset compiz and unity by following the instructions here (Fix 1 to 6):
http://askubuntu.com/questions/449845/problems-after-upgrading-to-14-04
-only-background-and-pointer-after-login

After I was able to use the newest driver I wasn't able to reproduce the
bug after at least 2 hours of testing. Before the update the issue
occured very frequently.

I will report if the bug reappears.

[Bug 1293242] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in ScaleScreen::getWindows()

2014-07-31 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
I encounter this problem on my desktop pc that has just been freshly
installed with Ubuntu 14.04 on a regular basis. No changes or tweaks to
Unity. The problem started right after install. I have two laptops
running Ubuntu with Unity not having this problem.

The crash is triggered when you open multiple windows of the same
application and click on the application icon in the launcher bar. The
first time I do this compiz can recover itself and I get a Apport
notification. If I accidentally trigger the bug a second time it
completely crashes, does not recover and launcher, window borders as
well as menubar are gone.

Using Alt+Tab to switch the window works without problems.

[Bug 1240198] Re: wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop, after upgrade to saucy

2014-05-27 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
Ok, I just checked the sources to confirm: With Ubuntu 13.10 the new
dconf settings were introduced with the default value of the setting
mentioned above set to False. So this probably is the cause for this
bug and also for bug #1246272 I suppose.

I'm trying to build a patch for this but I'm pretty new to creating
patches for Ubuntu so please be patient. In the meantime you can just
apply the setting manually as mentioned above.

This might still be caused by the same Problem even if the symptoms are
slightly different. Have you tried the workaround mentioned in the other
bug report? If not Then Please remove the shell script you created AS
described in this bug report and try the workaround Form the other one
and report back if it fixed the Problem for you.

[Bug 1246272] Re: Keyboard layout changing randomly

2014-05-08 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
Another workaround would be to put something like unity-settings-daemon
--replace in one of the login/start scripts. Since the problem always
only occurs once after each boot it will not occur again after replacing
the daemon.

[Bug 1246272] Re: Keyboard layout changing randomly

2014-04-27 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
Some observations on Trusty:
The indicator always shows the correct layout even if the actual layout is not
the same.
In /etc/default/keyboard the setting is correct. The X-Server log says it set
the correct layout (de in my case).

Possible workaround:
Run sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration in a Terminal. This worked
for one reboot at least. I will report back if the problem reoccurs.

[Bug 1246272] Re: Keyboard layout changing randomly

2014-04-27 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
The workaround from #21 does not work. It just happend again.

Sometimes the wrong layout is already set right after boot and you have
to change it before you are able to login or sometimes it happens when
switching to another window.

I have two Acer laptops, both have been upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04 and
both have this problem. One of them already had the problem in 13.10,
not in 12.04 though.

[Bug 416499] Re: Installer doesn't recognize Windows 7 NTFS partition properly

2013-07-12 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
I am seeing this problem when trying to install Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS on a
Lenovo ThinkCenter. I have been installing two similar PCs before that
did not have this problem.

This installer just says the whole disk is empty but there is already
Windows 7 on it and Ubuntu does show the partitions in Nautlius after
canceling the installer.

The only difference between the 2 working PCs and the one that is not working
is:
For the first 2 Windows 7 was installed on the whole disk so I had to resize
existing partitions. That worked and I could install Ubuntu on the so-created
free space.

For the other PC I recently installed Windows 7 so I chose partition
size a bit smaller to leave some free space on the disk for Ubuntu that
does not contain a partition. Maybe this free space does cause the
problem?

[Bug 1131640] Re: ldd : minor German translation issue

2013-07-08 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
Don't know why I considered this an upstream issue. The \t simply wasn't
replaced with [tab] in Launchpad so this was clearly a problem with the
translation template. Somebody seems to have fixed this for the Ubuntu
project. The wrong string still appears as in upstream suggestion
but I don't think there is an easy way of fixing that and it actually
shouldn't matter.

Can somebody confirm this is fixed in Ubuntu Saucy?

[Bug 1198417] [NEW] [Regression] telepathy-idle crashed with SIGSEV in g_simple_async_result_complete()

Public bug reported:

This bug is a regression of Bug 966789 and Bug 959874 while the first
one better describes the problem.

The crash happens at random times WITHOUT pressing FN keys to change the
backlight or anything else. When it happend the last time I wasn't even
at the PC and just noticed when coming back. Empathy is running all the
time in the background for me so this is kind of annoying. It
disconnects and reconnects afterwards.

I checked the upstream bug again and it seems this actually wasn't the
bug I was having in Precise since it got fixed in Empathy 3.3 and
Precise uses 3.4. So this bug report is obsolete and I am closing it as
Fix Released since it is fixed in Precise. If you are still having
issues you're probably experiencing a different bug. Maybe take a look

We should also determine the work required for LanguagePackUpdates and
maybe consider releasing less (or none?) updates for non-LTS releases in

translations for LTS releases.

Or we could provide LanguagePackUpdates for non-LTS releases in the
Translators PPA without testing every update right away.

As for the langpack updates, my understanding was that it was
bi-weekly. Has it evolved ? Can anyone chime in on this topic ?

I think, David wrote somewhere that they are exported bi-weekly but have
to be tested and approved manually to be released to the general

I think you have to run the setup-utility and configure an exchange
server. Otherwise Evolution won't even notice the extension. That's the
reason why I cannot test it, because I don't have access to a valid
exchange server.

Nevertheless, this bug is fixed upstream and if the package got removed
from Ubuntu anyway there is not much sense in trying to get this fixed
for Precise since the chances are very low that a fix will ever be
released (would need a SRU and translation bugs usually don't apply to
this).

If this is still a problem for anybody using Precise I suggest to
install the package manually.

Closing as Fix Released since Upstream fix is available.
