Re: [ubuntu-in] Review of the HP Ink Tank GT 5810 All-in-One Printer (or the wifi version)

Dear Ram,

With hp-setup and hp-doctor (I think that was the command), I could make
work all the HP printers came across to me in Ubuntu LTS versions...so I
would expect this should work.. I do not have first hand experience with
the model you mentioned.

[ubuntu-in] Ubuntu LTS Supported entry level Laser Printer

2017-03-16 Thread James Sebastian
I am looking to buy an entry level Laser printer for our basic printer
needs.
I know HP is well suported in almost all versions of Ubuntu. But a quick
look at best sellers list in Laser printers, Ido not see many HP printers.

http://www.amazon.in/gp/bestsellers/computers/1375443031/ref=zg_bs_nav_pc_2_1375458031/ref=sn_gfs_co_pc_P_6?ie=UTF8&pf_rd_p=845249847&pf_rd_r=19YMFX6JN647BBTEKCQ4&pf_rd_s=comp-subnav-flyout-content-1&pf_rd_t=SubnavFlyout

Does any one know if Ricoh SP 111 or Brother HL- or Samsung ML-2161 or
similar sub 5K or 6 K models working fine with Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 out
of the box. That way, I can ensure reasonable Ubuntu support for
LTSversions without too much of troubleshooting and command line activities.

Re: [ubuntu-in] How to customize an Ubuntu version

2016-05-19 Thread James Sebastian
Dear Ram,

One way to deal with replicating a customised install on many machines is
to install one machine with all the required packages.
Once ready use a clonezilla iso to boot from it, take a backup and restore
it to multiple machines. If DHCP you dont need any changes after this image
backup/restore process and pretty easy.

If you keep this image in a hard drive/ssh server, you can re-use any time
later for wipe-out and restore the vanilla version needs.

Also as suggested earlier,

Install from an ISO. Do an
apt-get clean (to clean /var/cache/apt/archives)
install all dependencies, then copy all the debian packages from
/var/cache/apt/archives

and use dpkg -i * to install them in each of these machines.

If suitable driver is not found and if it is supported by HPLIP
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/downloads.html
It will prompt for download from a terminal and install drivers.

On few models where I had trouble in installing command line utilities like
hp-doctor checked, diagnosed and fixed the driver challenges by itself,
saving downloading different packages by itself and/or answering few
questions.

Unfortunately, I did not keep a list of supported printers with Ubuntu
versions I used in my customer places.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Is it possible to run openjdk and java side by side on linux

2015-07-17 Thread James Sebastian
I could reply in detail earlier.
Apart from co-existing version sof Oracle JDK and Open JDK, you can have
different versions of Java (JDK/JRE) installed in same system as well. Say
Open JDK 6,7 along with Oracle JDK 6 & 7.

Like asusming a 64 bit system
openjdk-6-jdk:amd64
openjdk-6-jdk:i386
openjdk-7-jdk:amd64
openjdk-7-jdk:i386

Then you would be able to install Oracle Java by installing packages like

 oracle-java7-installer
 oracle-java7-installer

all the above using standard package installing utilities.

Then you can extra tar balls/.bin files to a given directory and set
Java_HOME or setting Java paths in different applications to make use.
So in short it is possible to have tons different java versions
simutaneously running in a system

Then using the configuration parameters in the application which uses Java
you need to set which version of Java to use.

For eg: For our application, we use Tomcat. There it looks for a certain
directories in their order and chooses the first one. So I can change/add
the first directory to the one I need for tomcat to pickup JDK and
JAVA_HOME I like.

That goes like this for tomcat

# The first existing directory is used for JAVA_HOME (if JAVA_HOME is not
# defined in $DEFAULT)
JDK_DIRS="/usr/lib/jvm/default-java ${OPENJDKS} /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk
/usr
/lib/jvm/java-6-sun /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle"

# Look for the right JVM to use
for jdir in $JDK_DIRS; do
if [ -r "$jdir/bin/java" -a -z "${JAVA_HOME}" ]; then
JAVA_HOME="$jdir"
fi
done
export JAVA_HOME
\

But each reasonable application will have a way to set Java Home or JDK
other than system default (set by /etc/alternatives), user default (which
can be setup in .profile or similar files). That would be the place you
need to look for when you need one Java version for one application and
another for another application. Or when you need to switch between
different java applications

Trust this helps

Re: [ubuntu-in] Is it possible to run openjdk and java side by side on linux

2015-07-05 Thread James Sebastian
Instead you can point to Java version you want at /etc/alternatives/java.
The file is a symbolic linkl pointing to the java we need.

for eg:
james@james-ubuntu14:~$ ls -l /usr/bin/java
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 May 14  2014 /usr/bin/java ->
/etc/alternatives/java

james@james-ubuntu14:~$ ls -l /etc/alternatives/java
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 39 Nov 29  2014 /etc/alternatives/java ->
/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/bin/java

so if you delete the link /etc/alternatives/java and recreate with new path
using ln -s you can use any of the multiple java versions you have

James

[ubuntu-in] Ms-Office mandatory for Engineering colleges ?

Dear all,

Today's Hindu reports this.

and I could see this from a link in AICTE website.

http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Microsoft-Office-365/All-India-Council-for-Technical-Education/India-Institute-Deploys-7.5-Million-Office-365-Seats-to-Improve-Governance-Learning/71002268

How a government body can mandate a commercial application when open source
alteratives like Libre Office or other on the cloud competing solutions are
there ?

And what is the way to protest this and make this to notice of decision
makers ?
I could not find an email id in AICTE website.

Please see

the title "four step process to add a swap file" describes this process and
should work on Ubuntu 12.04 as well as older versions same way.\

Re: [ubuntu-in] Artical about Ubuntu

2012-07-17 Thread James Sebastian
Hi Guys and Gals,

I use and advocate Ubuntu a lot these days to home users and small office
folks.

Two challenges I see when I relate to this article is still very big,

1. In the section Managing your machine "One thing that a user needs to
keep in mind is to buy Linux supported hardware. "

Unfortunately, this is not easy to find the hardware supported by Linux
(and many times that would mean an available RPM) or Ubuntu.
While installing some hardware is a cake walk, installing some others still
means wading through command line. I may be able to do that with lot of
internet search, but not an average user whom I advise to use it.

Probably canonical/Ubuntu should have another site similar to
http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/desktop/
to list the devices like webcam, network cards, printers, scanners etc etc
which work out of the box for a listed version of Ubuntu.

2. Challenges section. "To solve this problem the company can work with
local vendors to sell Ubuntu CDs."

I do not know if there is any company (canonical or another one) who
does that.

On Similar way, I am keen to know if any company is giving Ubuntu support
to check and resolve problems for any one who is willing to pay a
reasonable charge.

If there is a good solution for these two, I am sure Ubuntu can catch up
India very fast.

Regards,
James

Ubuntu is the most popular linux distro in India.
But this is not the level of popularity we should be satisfied with !
It should be talking like 10-20% of market share of OS, availability at
every nook and corner of the country and ability to get installed and
supported by an average hardware vendor in India.

Now dependency on internet and difficulty in learning curve to use solutions
like apt-on-cd makes it difficult.

Thanks Manish.
But this news item which led me to brainstorm says top 10 ideas will be

[ubuntu-in] brainstorm.ubuntu.com ideas - autogenerated solutions

2011-02-04 Thread James Sebastian
Dear friends,

I was trying to search for existing ideas before submitting one.
Then I came across ideas like

http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/6370/
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/6267/

They explain the rationale, but solution says

"
Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #6267
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #6267 was
submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated.
Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please
separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!-"

But it does not make me clear what was this solution which has considerable
number of votes.

If any one works closely with brainstorm, would you please explain what does
this solution really means?

You can validate if your audio works fine from other programs as well. For
eg, sound recorder which will appear in Application -> Sound & Video can be
used to validate that speaker and mic are working fine (for more details
refer https://help.*ubuntu*.com/community/*Sound)*

Same way, cheese (webcam booth) can be used to validate video is working
fine. You can install these programs from Ubuntu software centre if not
already installed. (for more details refer https://wiki.*ubuntu*.com/*
Webcam)*

I still not used audio/video on either empathy or pigdin, so I cannot
comment on them. Hope this helps.

Installation of Libreoffice 3.3.0 went fine for me(Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit ) as
well and I could run both OpenOffice and LibreOffice side by side for the
last 2 days. (I did not use or test too much)

>From readme, on install:
As a general rule, you are recommended to install LibreOffice via the
installation methods recommended by your particular Linux distribution (such
as the Ubuntu Software Center, in the case of Ubuntu Linux).

But I used generic instruction for debian based systems:

That is, download the tar.gz, extract, cd ./LibO_*/DEBS
sudo dpkg -i *.deb (The above dpkg command does the first part of the
installation process.)
To complete the process, you also need to install the desktop integration
packages. To do this, change directory to the "desktop-integration"
directory that is within the "DEBS" directory, using the following command:
cd desktop-integration followed by sudo dpkg -i *.deb

That worked fine for me and added needed links under applications -> office

BTW, quietly, openoffice.org as well released 3.3.0 one day after release of
LibreOffice.

Simmtronics not listed there at all
Dell and Lenovo have many models listed in the site. Probably you should get
them to certify recent models with 10.04 LTS primarily.

In Simmbook we used Ubuntu Ver 9.04 & 9.10
In Desktop we are using Ubuntu Ver 9.10 & 10.10

Dear Ram,

Thanks for quick reply.

See this news item as well.
http://www.thinkdigit.com/Laptops-PCs/Simmtronics-and-VIA-team-up-to-offer_5977.html

No harm in checking it out if you are in one of the cities.
As some one with 12 years of IT experience and now trying open source way to
make a living, I am keen to see Ubuntu succeed and to see what are the
possible options here for lay men (apart from very geek ones). I got few
friends across India willing to move to Ubuntu, but none of them are geeky
in nature, but just uses a PC for day to day life. But I do see most of them
struggles if wireless or wire network or something similar does work out of
the box.

So since I like open source to succeed I like these kind of offers to
succeed. So I would appreciate if you can visit one of these stores and
post feelers. I may try to visit one of the stores next time I am in delhi
as well.

First, I used digest and thought I would respond at the end.

1. Sorry for not asking required support in title. This was intentional as
posting guidelines suggested first post can be 'member introduction' and I
was too lazy to post another one for required support.

2. I posted the email little late, when this doctor was told by airtel that
Linux is not supported and due to other constraints my friend who was
guiding her could not find easy solutions. By this time, I posted the email,
she decided to buy Windows 7 and replace Ubuntu, so I could not make use of
the replies.

3. However, I understood that there is no easy way for support in delhi
apart from few enthusiasts. Or atleast, such people are not in this emailing
list.

Since as an individual, I plan to promote Ubuntu seriously over time. So
thanks for all the replies around this post.

[ubuntu-in] Member Introduction

2010-11-29 Thread James Sebastian
Hey all,

I am James from Manali in HP. I am a newbie to Ubuntu, but used rpm based
distros in the past, though I could not work/use linux for some time due to
my work situation.
For last one month I use Ubuntu 10.4 and quite happy with it. Thanks for
this support group.

I was hunting the archives for a paid support in Delhi to identify and setup
a data card (to connect to internet) on an ubuntu installation on a laptop.
The only thing I could stumble upon was a chain discussion on the topic
without any concrete answers. So I would like to know if there is some one
in delhi who can help this person to get a data card setup properly. She is
a senior doctor and enthused by Ubuntu while at Manali, but struggling to
keep that enthusiasm while in Delhi.
