[Bug 683084] Re: Global menu doesn't work well with more than one screen
I've been testing Unity and I've gotta add my concerns to this bug... On my netbook, and 1440x900 laptop, the global menu feels like a good fit. However, on my 22 monitor and my dual work monitors it's really not a good fit at all. Wouldn't it make sense to just disable the global menu when the resolution hits a certain threshold or when dual monitors exist? I mean, beyond 900 vertical pixels it seems we are generating a lot of usability issues just for the relatively minute vertical space saving (2.6%). Also, it seems a bit backwards to me, making the decision to have a global menu, and THEN trying to work out how to wedge it into the common dual-monitor/high resolution use cases. Surely it's better to specify the problem that needs to be solved and THEN come up with a solution based on all the common use cases... perhaps the best solution to saving vertical space and improving usability wouldn't involve a global menu at all. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/683084 Title: Global menu doesn't work well with more than one screen -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 655673] [NEW] Flash file chooser filters are case-sensitive
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree I wasn't sure where to report this, but it's such a massive problem (e.g. dead-end situation) when a non-technical user hits it that I thought I'd report it here as well as upstream on the Adobe bug tracker*. It may also be fixable at both ends (e.g. Adobe and Gtk) Steps to reproduce: 1. Visit and login to Kodak's image upload service ( http://www.kodakgallery.com/gallery/welcome.jsp ) 2. Attempt to upload images (filters on *.jpg;*jpeg) 3. Browse to a folder with files with an uppercase JPG extension Actual Results: Files will not be visible in the file chooser Expected Results: Files should be visible in the file chooser This a big problem, because if the user can't browse to the files they want they need to rename them all to lower case - I had to resort to bash to do that. I've done a little bit of digging and this is what I've discovered: 1. Flash calls the GtkFileChooser dialog 2. ActionScript uses a list of file extensions (rather than mimetypes) in FileReferenceList.browse() which is the method that opens the file chooser 3. GtkFileChooser doesn't seem to have a way to say make extensions case-insensitive (aside from mimetypes) So, it could well be that Flash didn't implement case insensitive filters because they was no way to tell Gtk to do it. It also raises the question, why would anyone want the GtkFileChooser filters to be case- SENSITIVE? I can see a few possible fixes, at different places: 1. The website specifies *.jpg and *.JPG 2. Flash tells Gtk to look at both upper and lower case versions 3. a) Gtk makes filters case-insensitive or b) provides a means to make it so if it doesn't exist already 1 and 2 aren't really complete solutions, 3a is a solution that the community can do, but there may be a reason for the current behaviour, 3b would require Adobe to fix it and possibly Gtk as well if the feature doesn't exist. * http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-5570 ** Affects: hundredpapercuts Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: flashplugin-nonfree (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: hundredpapercuts Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree I wasn't sure where to report this, but it's such a massive problem (e.g. dead-end situation) when a non-technical user hits it that I - thought I'd report it here as well as upstream on the Adobe bug tracker. - It may also be fixable at both ends (e.g. Adobe and Gtk) + thought I'd report it here as well as upstream on the Adobe bug + tracker*. It's always been the case, on both GNOME and Windows that ALT+PrtScrn takes a screenshot of the active Window. This is a really bad regression from a user experience POV, especially for non-technical users that take screenshots of active windows to send when they have issues. If we are now saying that ALT+PrntScrn *shouldn't* take a screenshot of the active window then we should at least have an alternative key binding sorted out and have it really well documented by release, otherwise revert whatever change caused this until Natty. -- ALT+PrtSc not recognised: breaks built-in screenshot function https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/642792 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close
Mark, I appreciate you commenting on this issue. Might I suggest that if you do want to relocate the controls to the left hand side consider at least leaving the close button on the right for this LTS release - for consistency (pretty much all tabs, multiple document interfaces etc. have the close on the right and it's quite late in the cycle to try patching everything from Ooo to Firefox to Nautilus etc.) This is also what Ivanka suggested, and I came up with the same solution when I tried to work out where I'd put the buttons ( http://kazade.livejournal.com/4695.html ). After using it a while it's quite a nice solution, it also looks consistent between windows with all buttons and dialog/toolbox windows that only have a close button. Next release you could then move the close button across to the left if that is what is required, but it's worth noting that if the buttons are on the left they will be directly under the hoverable Activities button in gnome-shell. As we don't completely know what Gnome 3 is going to bring I think making this change in an LTS, which you may need to revert, might not be the best idea. -- [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 406626] Re: Deleted Items Folder inconsistently named
In the UK, rubbish is the equivalent of the U.S. sounding trash, they are even used in the same contexts. Comparing rubbish to trash would be a fair comparison, as it's the same thing. As would be comparing rubbish bin or dustbin to trash can. Comparing trash to rubbish bin is comparing two different things (the items vs the container they go in). That said both rubbish and trash imply a certain finality about the action, you don't go digging in the rubbish to get something back, but a bin is a pretty generic term for a container (e.g. bargain bin, loony bin), I'd argue that Bin would be far more fitting than Trash or Rubbish, like Popey said, the rubbish is what goes in the bin. -- Deleted Items Folder inconsistently named https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/406626 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 406626] Re: Deleted Items Folder inconsistently named
Yes we can agree that much. There seems to be a general consensus among the UK people in this thread that Rubbish Bin or Bin would be suitable. [Bug 443029] Re: No power icon (unclear how to shutdown)
I have to agree here. I've had two non-techie family members use Ubuntu for a little while and both of them have asked how to turn it off - this should be more obvious than it is. One possible solution is to display Session instead of the user's name, then at least the menu's purpose makes sense just from looking at it. But then you have the problem that you don't know who is logged in. Perhaps the menu is trying to do too much? I would argue we need two menus the first has: Username - Available - Away - Busy - Invisible - Offline - Guest session - Other user sessions - Lock screen - Log out Then another one with just a power icon or something that has - Shutdown - Restart - Suspend - Hibernate So the first has session related actions that don't affect other users. The second has power related actions that DO affect other users. [Bug 419126] Re: X fails to start up after mesa+git update - gdm loops after logging in
I've just upgraded to the broken DRM and new kernel (rc8) then I copied my previously self-compiled drm.ko from the previous kernel modules and lo and behold I can log in with DRI! I compiled with this patch: http://www.botchco.com/alex/xorg/0001 -radeon-drm-Add-3D-support-on-r6xx-r7xx-chips.patch So I'm guessing either GIT HEAD or something in that patch fixes it. -- X fails to start up after mesa+git update - gdm loops after logging in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/419126 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 419126] Re: X fails to start up after mesa+git update - gdm loops after logging in
So, I just rebuilt drm.ko, radeon.ko and ttm.ko using the Ubuntu kernel source + the above patch, and it works perfectly, with 3D acceleration as well. So something in the patch fixes the GDM issue. -- X fails to start up after mesa+git update - gdm loops after logging in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/419126 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 419126] Re: gdm loops after logging in
Last week I added the xorg-edgers PPA, this installed a new package: libdrm-radeon1 and I experienced this bug. Downgrading the packages and removing the PPA fixed it. My guess is that some changes from xorg-edgers have filtered down to vanilla Karmic and the bug has come down with it. I haven't updated my Karmic install yet, but I think it quite likely when I do I'll hit this bug again. I'll report back after updating. [Bug 419126] Re: X fails to start up after mesa+git update - gdm loops after logging in
@bryce, I'm really sorry I didn't report it sooner. I'd been fiddling with a bunch of other stuff (compiling from git etc.) so I figured it was just me. Soon after I managed to compile the 3D R600 branch and I've been using that since. It was only when I saw the comment in the Karmic forums that I realized it wasn't something I'd done. -- X fails to start up after mesa+git update - gdm loops after logging in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/419126 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Is that any different from the current situation? [Bug 194213] Re: Dim files when you 'cut' them for later 'paste' action
Has anyone recently tried the patch from the Gnome bug? http://mail.gnome.org/archives/nautilus-list/2005-June/msg00018.html It likely won't apply cleanly now, but anyone taking on this issue might be able to use it as a starting point. -- Dim files when you 'cut' them for later 'paste' action https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194213 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 352025] Re: Windows programs loading too slow into wine.
Would it be reasonable to (give the option to) start the wineserver process on login? I find it's only slow to start the first Wine app after logging in because the wineserver process is starting. Perhaps that option could be part of winecfg, something like a Start Wine when GNOME starts checkbox. - Just a thought. -- Windows programs loading too slow into wine. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/352025 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 346835] Re: MASTER - modems not detected - udev prober broken (Was: Huawei e169 doesn't connect + Globetrotter 3G+ card not recognized anymore)
This issue has got a bit confusing... I'll try to decipher it. The main issue of the bug report is that the wireless broadband just doesn't work, I'm experiencing the same problem as Lanzen. Lanzen said that the 77-nm-probe-modem-capabilities.rules file from Intrepid fixes the problem, the one posted above my Alexander doesn't. The double entry bug that Lanzen mentioned here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network- manager/+bug/346835/comments/14 is a different bug ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/339926 ). Alexander, the syslog you requested (https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network- manager/+bug/346835/comments/15) is the one here ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network- manager/+bug/346835/comments/4 ) - I'm receiving identical messages in mine, but I can't post it because my laptop battery just died. Phew.. I'll try to post my syslog tonight if I have time. -- MASTER - modems not detected - udev prober broken (Was: Huawei e169 doesn't connect + Globetrotter 3G+ card not recognized anymore) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/346835 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
