[Bug 1048753] Re: turn off libreoffice ubuntu 12.10 global menu

2012-09-11 Thread Kazade
LibreOffice is currently unusable for me under Gnome Shell in 12.10.
Purging appmenu-gtk* and indicator-appmenu doesn't seem to help...

[Bug 860350] [NEW] When using an external monitor, LightDM uses a low resolution on both

2011-09-27 Thread Kazade
Public bug reported:

I have a laptop with a screen resolution of 1366x768 and an external 24
monitor which has a native resolution of 1920x1080.

LightDM mirrors the image on both screens, however the resolution for both
screens falls back to something low, like 1024x768. I think this is probably
the highest resolution that both monitors are capable of, but it has the result
of the login screen looking bad on both.

I've had the same problem, it's a simple fix. Edit the debian control
file and replace:

wine1.2 [i386 amd64]

with:

wine1.2 [i386 amd64] | wine1.3 [i386 amd64]

and then:

wine1.2-dev [i386 amd64]

with

wine1.2-dev [i386 amd64] | wine1.3-dev [i386 amd64]

Still not fixed, attaching another screenshot. You can see that the

text isn't vertically centred but I think that's been reported
elsewhere).

[Bug 683084] Re: Global menu doesn't work well with more than one screen

2011-02-09 Thread Kazade
I've been testing Unity and I've gotta add my concerns to this bug...

On my netbook, and 1440x900 laptop, the global menu feels like a good
fit. However, on my 22 monitor and my dual work monitors it's really
not a good fit at all. Wouldn't it make sense to just disable the global
menu when the resolution hits a certain threshold or when dual monitors
exist?

I mean, beyond 900 vertical pixels it seems we are generating a lot of
usability issues just for the relatively minute vertical space saving
(2.6%).

Also, it seems a bit backwards to me, making the decision to have a
global menu, and THEN trying to work out how to wedge it into the common
dual-monitor/high resolution use cases. Surely it's better to specify
the problem that needs to be solved and THEN come up with a solution
based on all the common use cases... perhaps the best solution to saving
vertical space and improving usability wouldn't involve a global menu at
all.

[Bug 683578] [NEW] Unity plugin (natty ppa) crashes Compiz on Nouveau/Gallium3d from xorg-edgers

2010-12-01 Thread Kazade
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

By running compiz --replace with the Unity plugin enabled, I get the
following output (before Compiz crashes and I'm left without a WM):

Initializing unityshell options...done
compiz: nv50_pc_emit.c:863: emit_flop: Assertion `STYPE(i, 0) == 0x09' failed.
Aborted

Compiz works fine without Unity enabled.

[Bug 655673] [NEW] Flash file chooser filters are case-sensitive

2010-10-06 Thread Kazade
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

I wasn't sure where to report this, but it's such a massive problem
(e.g. dead-end situation) when a non-technical user hits it that I
thought I'd report it here as well as upstream on the Adobe bug
tracker*. It may also be fixable at both ends (e.g. Adobe and Gtk)

Steps to reproduce:
1. Visit and login to Kodak's image upload service (
http://www.kodakgallery.com/gallery/welcome.jsp )
2. Attempt to upload images (filters on *.jpg;*jpeg)
3. Browse to a folder with files with an uppercase JPG extension

 Actual Results:
Files will not be visible in the file chooser

 Expected Results:
Files should be visible in the file chooser

This a big problem, because if the user can't browse to the files they
want they need to rename them all to lower case - I had to resort to
bash to do that.

I've done a little bit of digging and this is what I've discovered:

1. Flash calls the GtkFileChooser dialog
2. ActionScript uses a list of file extensions (rather than mimetypes) in
FileReferenceList.browse() which is the method that opens the file chooser
3. GtkFileChooser doesn't seem to have a way to say make extensions
case-insensitive (aside from mimetypes)

So, it could well be that Flash didn't implement case insensitive
filters because they was no way to tell Gtk to do it. It also raises the
question, why would anyone want the GtkFileChooser filters to be case-
SENSITIVE?

I can see a few possible fixes, at different places:

1. The website specifies *.jpg and *.JPG
2. Flash tells Gtk to look at both upper and lower case versions
3. a) Gtk makes filters case-insensitive or b) provides a means to make it so
if it doesn't exist already

1 and 2 aren't really complete solutions, 3a is a solution that the
community can do, but there may be a reason for the current behaviour,
3b would require Adobe to fix it and possibly Gtk as well if the feature
doesn't exist.

[Bug 642792] Re: ALT+PrtSc not recognised: breaks built-in screenshot function

2010-10-04 Thread Kazade
It's always been the case, on both GNOME and Windows that ALT+PrtScrn
takes a screenshot of the active Window. This is a really bad regression
from a user experience POV, especially for non-technical users that take
screenshots of active windows to send when they have issues.

If we are now saying that ALT+PrntScrn *shouldn't* take a screenshot of
the active window then we should at least have an alternative key
binding sorted out and have it really well documented by release,
otherwise revert whatever change caused this until Natty.

[Bug 322314] Re: Automatically connect on startup setting confusing - users may expect this to run Empathy on login

2010-09-15 Thread Kazade
So, should we start another bug report to get Empathy to show under
Startup Applications? As it just involves adding a file to the Empathy
package in /etc/xdg/autostart it should be a pretty easy fix.

We should really have the same option for all applications that live
permanently under the indicator menu (Gwibber, Evolution, Empathy).

[Bug 626456] [NEW] No backlight at login, and broken Plymouth on Acer Aspire One D260 (acpi)

2010-08-29 Thread Kazade
Public bug reported:

When booting an Acer Aspire One D260 with UNE 10.04 LTS (2.6.32) there
are two problems during boot. Firstly, Plymouth displays the VESA text-
style boot splash and then secondly, as soon as the GDM appears the
backlight switches off for around 20 seconds (it eventually comes on
allowing login).

Both of these symptoms disappear when acpi=off is added a kernel option
at GRUB.

[Ubuntu-l10n-eng] [Bug 406626] Re: Deleted Items Folder inconsistently named in en_GB localization

2010-08-26 Thread Kazade
I think most native speakers are happy with either Bin or Rubbish
Bin. I'd personally prefer Bin (as I wouldn't really refer to deleted
files rubbish) but Rubbish Bin is fine if we are going with the
waste container metaphor. As mentioned above, gmail uses Bin and that
seems very natural.

2010-08-26 Thread Kazade
Please, just go with Bin. The majority of native speakers in this
thread seem happy with it. Either go with Bin or do a survey (but I'm
almost positive the outcome of such a survey would be Bin).

Gmail uses Bin, and even Microsoft calls it the Recycle Bin in
Windows. Bin is the common GB term, let's just go with that and be done
with it.

[Bug 585973] Re: gwibber appear two times in indicator-applet

2010-06-08 Thread Kazade
This seems to happen if you attempt to click on Broadcast too quickly
after login. gwibber-service seems to start automatically after a few
seconds when you login which makes the little white triangle appear next
to it in the messaging menu. If you login and click Broadcast before
that triangle exists, then you end up with two instances of gwibber-
service running.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-16 Thread Kazade
Mark, I appreciate you commenting on this issue. Might I suggest that if
you do want to relocate the controls to the left hand side consider at
least leaving the close button on the right for this LTS release - for
consistency (pretty much all tabs, multiple document interfaces etc.
have the close on the right and it's quite late in the cycle to try
patching everything from Ooo to Firefox to Nautilus etc.)

This is also what Ivanka suggested, and I came up with the same solution
when I tried to work out where I'd put the buttons (
http://kazade.livejournal.com/4695.html ). After using it a while it's
quite a nice solution, it also looks consistent between windows with all
buttons and dialog/toolbox windows that only have a close button.

Next release you could then move the close button across to the left if
that is what is required, but it's worth noting that if the buttons are
on the left they will be directly under the hoverable Activities
button in gnome-shell. As we don't completely know what Gnome 3 is going
to bring I think making this change in an LTS, which you may need to
revert, might not be the best idea.

2010-03-15 Thread Kazade
I think that search is flawed. Trash is very rarely used in spoken UK
English when referring to Rubbish, the only time I can think of the
word trash being used is reference to something like a TV show, or
book e.g. That book was trash but even that itself is a rarity because
I believe quite an old fashioned usage of the term.

You'll note that in that rubbish as a term occurs 2257 times, and
bin 682. These are separate words normally spoken and written without
hyphenation, which would explain why the hyphenated version only occurs
once.

[Bug 538646] [NEW] Frets on Fire has the wrong name and description on featured applications

2010-03-14 Thread Kazade
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

On the Featured Applications screen the description and name of Frets on
Fire seem to be reversed. The name says game of musical skill and fast
fingers and the description underneath says fretsonfire

Clicking the More info button doesn't show a screenshot and says that
it is a meta package.

However, search all applications for frets shows the first result as
Frets on Fire with the description Rock out with your keyboard also
clicking More Info shows a screenshot.

[Bug 406626] Re: Deleted Items Folder inconsistently named

2010-03-08 Thread Kazade
In the UK, rubbish is the equivalent of the U.S. sounding trash,
they are even used in the same contexts. Comparing rubbish to trash
would be a fair comparison, as it's the same thing. As would be
comparing rubbish bin or dustbin to trash can.

Comparing trash to rubbish bin is comparing two different things
(the items vs the container they go in).

That said both rubbish and trash imply a certain finality about the
action, you don't go digging in the rubbish to get something back, but a
bin is a pretty generic term for a container (e.g. bargain bin, loony
bin), I'd argue that Bin would be far more fitting than Trash or
Rubbish, like Popey said, the rubbish is what goes in the bin.

Yes we can agree that much. There seems to be a general consensus among
the UK people in this thread that Rubbish Bin or Bin would be
suitable. Trash would be better than the inconsistency we have now,
but it's not really the term we use in British English.

FWIW doing:

followed by:

Seems to have brought it back to life.

[Bug 453072] Re: Context menu for an USB pendrive shows Unmount, Eject and Safely Remove Drive

2010-03-02 Thread Kazade
I wonder if Unmount could be shown only if you hold SHIFT when right
clicking or can be enabled with a gconf key or something?

I've been using Ubuntu for some time (since 2005) and it's only while
reading this bug report (and the one upstream) that I understand why
there are 3 options there, I still don't fully understand why right-
clicking my USB drive shows both Eject and Safely Remove

IMO by default, Unmount shouldn't be an option, CD/DVD drives should
have Eject, and anything else should have Safely Remove, but like I
said, it would be nice if it was easy to enable Unmount for those who
require it.

[Bug 438536] Re: Notifications should show up closer to top right

2009-10-20 Thread Kazade
I personally think that the notifications should be bottom-left, bottom-
centre or bottom-right to avoid the problems with covering window
buttons/firefox seach bar etc. However, then we are back to the Notify-
osd position should be configurable debate, which would really solve
the problem.

[Bug 443029] Re: No power icon (unclear how to shutdown)

2009-10-05 Thread Kazade
I have to agree here. I've had two non-techie family members use Ubuntu
for a little while and both of them have asked how to turn it off - this
should be more obvious than it is. One possible solution is to display
Session instead of the user's name, then at least the menu's purpose
makes sense just from looking at it. But then you have the problem that
you don't know who is logged in. Perhaps the menu is trying to do too
much? I would argue we need two menus the first has:

Username
  - Available
  - Away
  - Busy
  - Invisible
  - Offline
  - Guest session
  - Other user sessions
  - Lock screen
  - Log out

Then another one with just a power icon or something that has

 - Shutdown
 - Restart
 - Suspend
 - Hibernate

So the first has session related actions that don't affect other users.
The second has power related actions that DO affect other users. Then
the inclusion/removal of the second menu would change what appears under
System.

[Bug 435792] [NEW] Close menu item seems to violate Gnome HIG

2009-09-24 Thread Kazade
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-store

In the specification for the software store is the following:

“Close” should, by default, exit the Software Store without prompting.

It also says that CTRL+W should trigger this item (and thus quit the
application).

However, the Gnome HIG says:

QuitCtrl-Q Closes the application.
Close Ctrl-W Closes the current document.

It seems that to stay consistent with other applications, Close in the
file menu should become Quit.

More information here:
http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/1.0/menus.html#the-file-menu
under Closing Operations

(I mentioned this in the thread on Ubuntu forums, but thought it best to
post as a bug so it doesn't get lost)

[Bug 435792] Re: Close menu item seems to violate Gnome HIG

2009-09-24 Thread Kazade
OK, I would argue though that Epiphany is a multi-document application
and Close closes the tabs as well as the application (when no tabs
remain). I can't really see the reasoning for the Software Store having
close rather than quit, I mean the application doesn't open anything
to close. Still it's your decision, sorry for linking an old HIG.

Perhaps then the bug wasn't really fixed by the update... just the
missing r600_dri.so was disabling DRI and so not hitting the bug at all

[Bug 419126] Re: X fails to start up after mesa+git update - gdm loops after logging in

2009-08-28 Thread Kazade
I've just upgraded to the broken DRM and new kernel (rc8) then I copied
my previously self-compiled drm.ko from the previous kernel modules and
lo and behold I can log in with DRI!

I compiled with this patch: http://www.botchco.com/alex/xorg/0001
-radeon-drm-Add-3D-support-on-r6xx-r7xx-chips.patch

So I'm guessing either GIT HEAD or something in that patch fixes it.

So, I just rebuilt drm.ko, radeon.ko and ttm.ko using the Ubuntu kernel
source + the above patch, and it works perfectly, with 3D acceleration

[Bug 419126] Re: gdm loops after logging in

2009-08-26 Thread Kazade
Last week I added the xorg-edgers PPA, this installed a new package:
libdrm-radeon1 and I experienced this bug.

Downgrading the packages and removing the PPA fixed it. My guess is that
some changes from xorg-edgers have filtered down to vanilla Karmic and
the bug has come down with it. I haven't updated my Karmic install yet,
but I think it quite likely when I do I'll hit this bug again. I'll
report back after updating. My GPU is an ATI HD3200.

Would it be reasonable to (give the option to) start the wineserver

[Bug 346835] Re: MASTER - modems not detected - udev prober broken (Was: Huawei e169 doesn't connect + Globetrotter 3G+ card not recognized anymore)

2009-03-26 Thread Kazade
This issue has got a bit confusing... I'll try to decipher it. The main
issue of the bug report is that the wireless broadband just doesn't
work, I'm experiencing the same problem as Lanzen.

Lanzen said that the 77-nm-probe-modem-capabilities.rules file from
Intrepid fixes the problem, the one posted above my Alexander doesn't.

The double entry bug that Lanzen mentioned here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-
manager/+bug/346835/comments/14 is a different bug (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/339926 ).

Alexander, the syslog you requested

manager/+bug/346835/comments/15) is the one here (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-
manager/+bug/346835/comments/4 ) - I'm receiving identical messages in
mine, but I can't post it because my laptop battery just died.

Phew.. I'll try to post my syslog tonight if I have time.
