[Bug 1946235] Re: pcscd won't install due to bad dependency version

2021-10-07 Thread Lars Noodén
Ok. This was probably a bug in the update-manager that only manifested
symptoms in my case in pcscd.

I noticed the only place 'hirsute' was mentioned was in /etc/apt/ is one
file, /etc/apt/sources.list.d/system.sources there. Once I changed all
instances of 'hirsute' to 'impish' in
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/system.sources it was possible to get pcscd
installed as normal.

So I guess this is either solved or should be relabeled as applying to
'update-manager'

I should add that libpcsclite1 is installed but a newer version,

# apt install libpcsclite1

libpcsclite1 is already the newest version (1.9.3-2).

[Bug 1946235] Re: pcscd won't install due to bad dependency version

2021-10-06 Thread Lars Noodén
Yes, I've done the following.

apt update
apt upgrade

However, qemu is not mentioned in any part of the output from those
steps. Though it is installed:

$ apt-cache policy qemu-system-x86 | head -n 3
qemu-system-x86:
  Installed: 1:6.0+dfsg-2expubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:6.0+dfsg-2expubuntu1

The problems with pcscd arose after using the update-manager to move
from 21.04 to 21.10-beta. pcscd is a dependency for another package
which is the main reason for using Ubuntu instead of another distro.
Specifically it is a smart card reader needed to interact with an
increasing number of government sites and services.

After removing qemu-block-extra, I get the following when trying to
install pcscd :

# apt install pcscd
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done

[Bug 1865191] [NEW] Control center needs a keyboard shortcut for screen brightness

2020-02-28 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

The control center has no pre-made shortcut for screen brightnesss.
There should at least be an option for screen brightness up and down, as
there is for sound volume up and down, even if no keys are set by
default. As it is, one has to make a complex work-around involving a
shell script and fiddling with /etc/sudoers. Please add pre-made
shortcuts for brightness up and brightness down under the section for
Keyboard Shortcuts.

[Bug 1195911] Re: ssh: Received disconnect from xx.yy.zz.aa: 2: Too many authentication failures for XXXX

2020-02-11 Thread Lars Noodén
I see this bug is still open. One work-around exists where
~/.ssh/config is used. Make an entry there for the host (or range of
hosts using a pattern) and assign the right key using IdentityFile while
also setting IdentitiesOnly to "yes". Both parts are needed for the
work-around.

[Bug 1862768] [NEW] Network manager ignores LTE USB Modem

2020-02-11 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

I notice that the network manager in Cinnamon for the testing version of
Ubuntu does not show activity for an LTE USB modem (model MF831) even
when it is in use. If I install the system with it as the default then
I can plug it and unplug it and the network functions as expected, just
not visibly from the NetworkManager. If I install the system from
another interface first, then I can only use the modem if I run dhclient
manually. I would expect the NetworkManager to find, use, and display
the modem regardless of when it is added to the system.

[Bug 1572869] [NEW] pipe is still busy with an old pageflip

2016-04-21 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

My system locks up several times a week. There is nothing that I know
of that can trigger it, it happens whether I use one monitor or two.
The symptom is that the applications windows become unresponsive, then
eventually also the mouse pointer, then eventually even the consoles.
As far as I can tell it is associated with the log messages below from
/var/log/kern.log

Pressing the power button as per normal will initiate a shutdown but
without any log entries. Sometimes it can go a week with no problems
other times, it can fail twice in one day.

On the PPC Desktop image from 2016-02-16, this seems to still exist.
The slider for the resizing appears and can be moved around but the
"Continue" button remains greyed out and never becomes available.

there is no release for PPC to test this on:

[Bug 1491360] [NEW] New Engimail encrypts with the wrong key

2015-09-02 Thread Lars Noodén
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

With the most recent upgrade of Enigmail on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, my previous
settings are lost and it is not using the key it used to
use. Instead of using the active OpenPGP key it is using one of my archived,
disabled keys. When I send a message to myself, it tells me it is using the
right key,

"Note: The message is encrypted for the following User ID's / Keys:
0xDEF20AB6"

yet it still encrypts with the wrong key. What I expect would happen
would be that Enigmail would use the same key it used to use (which is
the one it says it is using) instead of the wrong key. Furthermore the
wrong key is long since expired.

This prevents sending or receiving encrypted mail.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.04
Package: enigmail 2:1.8.2-0ubuntu0.14.04.1

[Bug 1067301] Re: gnome-keyring does not support ssh-add -c

2015-08-12 Thread Lars Noodén
In 14.04.3 LTS it seems to be fixed so it is possible to load a key into
the agent using 'ssh-add -c' but then the confirmation dialog pops up
and does not accept the key's passphrase. Resulting in :

Agent admitted failure to sign using the key.
Permission denied (publickey,keyboard-interactive).

However, just pressing 'OK' on the gnome-ssh-askpass dialog goes ahead
with the login. So the input field should be removed from gnome-ssh-
askpass or else a different tool used, since entering anything in it
causes the login to fail.

[Bug 1471413] Re: dock menu allows multiple, overlapping instances

2015-07-05 Thread Lars Noodén
** Description changed:

- Something is wrong with the animations in cairo-dock. The original icon
- is left in the original place in the background of the dock even if the
- icons have been modified or displaced by active and ongoing animation.
- See the attached screenshot. The expected results would be that there
- are no artifacts behind the active animations.
+ This appears to be an interaction between XFCE and Cairo-Dock.
+
+ If in XFCE, one goes to XFCE- Settings- Session and Startup-
+ Application Autostart, and sets it to launch /usr/bin/cairo-dock, then
+ one still has the option in Cairo-Dock to + Launch Cairo-Dock on
+ startup. This gives two overlapping instances of cairo-dock, See the
+ attached screenshot.
+
+ When checking to see if cairo-dock is already added to XFCE's startup
+ applications, it should look to find manually added instances as well.

[Bug 1471415] [NEW] clock date ignores xfce language settings

2015-07-04 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

The clock defaults to %d %b but the locale is wrong. The clock
appears to use the system locale rather than what the user has chosen
for their language. What happens is that with %d %b the clock shows
the month in the wrong language. What would be the expected behavior is
that the clock shows the month in the language selected by the user in
XFCE itself.

For example if /etc/default/locale has this:

 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 LC_NUMERIC=fi_FI.UTF-8
 LC_TIME=fi_FI.UTF-8
 LC_MONETARY=fi_FI.UTF-8
 LC_PAPER=fi_FI.UTF-8
 LC_NAME=fi_FI.UTF-8
 LC_ADDRESS=fi_FI.UTF-8
 LC_TELEPHONE=fi_FI.UTF-8
 LC_MEASUREMENT=fi_FI.UTF-8
 LC_IDENTIFICATION=fi_FI.UTF-8

then the clock displays the month in Finnish regardless of which
language the user has set in XFCE, such as Swedish or English. The
user's XFCE settings should override the locale for all XFCE programs
and applets.

[Bug 1460663] Re: Cannot find YubiKey Edge - No YubiKey Inserted

Thanks, Klas.

How can I initiate the process of getting the updated software packaged
into 14.04 LTS? If I recall correctly 14.04 LTS still has hardware
support for a year or two.

[Bug 1460663] [NEW] Cannot find YubiKey Edge - No YubiKey Inserted

2015-06-01 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

I've got a new YubiKey Edge in the default shipped configuration that the
YubiKey Personalization Tool is not finding.
Even though the key is inserted, the Personalization Tool GUI shows the error
No YubiKey Inserted

This happens even when the YubiKey is plugged in and the LED is lit, the
tool 'lsusb' shows that the key is found

$ lsusb |grep -i yubi
Bus 003 Device 027: ID 1050:0403 Yubico.com

and if I press the button, I get a string of 44 characters (letters)
plus a return. e.g.

ccetgkbrtectnlhnjnkdudjleuinjlifrhurncjn

It also is recognized in the validation web service at
https://demo.yubico.com/start/otp/standard

But the YubiKey Personalization Tool on 64-bit Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
GNU/Linux is not finding it. Perhaps the newer tools need to be
packaged.

[Bug 1290941] Re: gnome-terminal ignores 'Use custom default terminal size' setting

2015-04-13 Thread Lars Noodén
I'm still seeing this bug in Trusty. I can create a new profile with a
custom size and when I switch to that profile, the size does not change.
Though if I launch a new instance of gnome-terminal, specifying the
profile with the launch, then the new window is the right size.

[Bug 1434980] [NEW] Cannot create ext4 partition during installation

2015-03-22 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

When I manually create a partition, the installation hangs indefinitely
when creating the ext4 partition. Steps:

1. run Ubiquity
2. go through to selecting the installation type
3. choose Erase Ubuntu Vivid Vervet and Reinstall

Happens every time. But since that is not in the official QA, here is
another way to get the problem

1. run Ubiquity
2. go through to selecting the installation type
3. choose Something else
4. erase and re-create the partition

Happens every time.

This is on top of an installation from an image from a few weeks ago.

[Bug 1227305] Re: PCManFM not opening SFTP connection with keys

2015-02-11 Thread Lars Noodén
This seems to be fixed in vivid. The steps to test it are.

1 set up a machine with openssh-server and disallow password
authentication. Then set up access using keys.

2. try connecting from the client machine using PCManFM and the URI for
the remote machine: sftp://u...@server.example.org/

PCManFM now triggers a query for the key's passphrase and then uses the
key to log in. This is as it should be.

** Changed in: pcmanfm (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete = Fix Released

[Bug 1227305] Re: PCManFM not opening SFTP connection with keys

2015-02-11 Thread Lars Noodén
The fix is only for RSA keys and ed25519 keys are not found or accepted.
However, I suspect that the problem is not that of PCManFM but of
another component. That might be bug #1393531

[Bug 1415848] Re: Lubuntu vivid desktop amd64 does not boot from USB

2015-02-05 Thread Lars Noodén
Lubuntu 14.10 Desktop AMD64 stops at about the same point:

[9006426] [drm] radeon kernel modesetting enabled.
[9.006470] fb: switching to radeondrmfb from EFI VGA

Lubuntu 14.04 Desktop AMD64+mac won't even show up as a boot choice.

That is all on USB stick. On DVD, they boot fine. However optical
media have already started to go away from Apple hardware.

The MD5 sum was ok, I always check that. There were some comments on
the Ubuntu Forums about slow dowloads of the images yesterday, but I
can't find the link.

About work-arounds you mention on the QA list that manually skipping to
the next step after the error still gave you a bootable system. Does it
run reliably?

[Bug 1397652] [NEW] /dev/random and /dev/urandom world writeable

2014-11-30 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

It looks like in 14.04.1 that /dev/random and /dev/urandom are world-
writeable. This occurs in at least 14.04.1 Desktop for AMD64 and Server
for i386

$ ls -l /dev/*random
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1, 8 Nov 25 10:44 /dev/random
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1, 9 Nov 25 10:44 /dev/urandom

[Bug 1397652] Re: /dev/random and /dev/urandom world writeable

2014-11-30 Thread Lars Noodén
Thanks. It is probably my lack of understanding. The manual page for
random(4) uses 644 for both and show writing to urandom to set the
random seed. But if writing to the devices by non-root users does not
reduce the entropy then the original aspect of the bug is invalid,
though maybe the man page could use a few words of clarification.

[Bug 1394097] [NEW] IN_MODIFY does not trigger on file modification in some accounts

2014-11-19 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

IN_MODIFY does not trigger on file modification in some accounts. The
results are inconsistent. Either it triggers for one user or it does
not. One time, changing the order of users inside /etc/incron.allow
*seemed* to change which user could use IN_MODIFY, but changing the
order back to the original did not switch the behaviour back.

What should happen is that IN_MODIFY works for every user allowed to
write incrontabs.

[Bug 1394086] [NEW] IN_MODIFY does not trigger once on file modification

2014-11-18 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

In incrontab the event symbol IN_MODIFY does not trigger an action just
once on file modification. So with the following root incrontab file:

  # incrontab -l
  /tmp/Y/y IN_MODIFY /usr/bin/zenity --title=A-OK --info --text=MODIFY file
--display=:0.0

If the file is modified with touch then nothing happens. Changing the
access and modification times of the file should trigger under IN_MODIFY

If the file is modified with a redirect ( eg. date /tmp/Y/y ) then
zenity is called twice instead of once. The file was modified only
once, so incron should trigger only once.

Steve and Pasi, for what it's worth, setting LC_TIME=sv_FI.UTF-8 makes
the shell display dates (e.g. via ls) in English, but quite ruins many
graphical applications. See the attached cropped screenshot to see
both.

[Bug 1377878] Re: PPC - GUI freezes except for mouse pointer

Ok. I see the Ubuntu FAQ. I thought before that it may have been
abandoned or outdated.

Also, perhaps linux was the wrong package here for the bug. I was
aiming for a fix in the utility on the CD that boots the kernel.

[Bug 1377878] Re: PPC - GUI freezes except for mouse pointer

2014-11-10 Thread Lars Noodén
Walter and Boris, the video=ofonly radeon.agpmode=-1 work-around
allows installation to complete on my hardware. The installed system
even boots to the desktop. If forgot to test it on the 2014-11-08 image
but remembered for the 2014-11-09 image

[Bug 1377878] Re: PPC - GUI freezes except for mouse pointer

2014-11-10 Thread Lars Noodén
One thing to look into is how much the video=ofonly radeon.agpmode=-1
settings slow down the GUI. Some things, such as clicking on an icon,
are quite sluggish but I don't know how to find where the fault lies.

Boris, it's still a bug until the installer adds those boot options and
the installed system ends up with them in yaboot.conf

[Bug 1382939] Re: text and some graphics munged in lubuntu

2014-11-05 Thread Lars Noodén
Here is a screenshot showing one of the problem areas. Sorry the photo
is not so good, it is hard to get a good closeup, in part because of the
brightness (which is another bug because it cannot be adjusted). I hope
it illustrates the problem. Bascally the text in some cases is
virtually unreadable.

2014-11-04 Thread Lars Noodén
Looking at the image on a different computer, it looks ok. But on the
original equipment it is quite bad. I'll get the machine out tomorrow
and take a photo instead.

[Bug 1382831] Re: cryptsetup : failed bad passphrase or options

2014-10-21 Thread Lars Noodén
I'm able to unlock it manually but not using the installed system's own
tools. I have to use a Live image. But both the 14.04 and 14.10 Live
images work for that. Is there some boot parameter I could use to try
the installed system's own tools manually? The virtual consoles are not
available until after the disk is decrypted.

[Bug 1382831] Re: cryptsetup : failed bad passphrase or options

2014-10-20 Thread Lars Noodén
It is on a very old Titatium PowerBook:

http://people.ubuntu.com/~larsnooden/Hw/g4.ti.lshw.html

I'm not sure how to get the d-i syslog, since the system won't boot.
The Live DVD for 14.10 does not boot, so that's out. I suppose I could
see if I could get at it with the 14.04 Live DVD, if that works.

[Bug 1382831] Re: cryptsetup : failed bad passphrase or options

2014-10-20 Thread Lars Noodén
I've tried getting at the installed partition using the 14.04 live
image. When I go to the console:

# cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda4 foo
# mount /dev/mapper/foo /mnt

Cryptsetup accepts the decryption password ok, but mount gives the error
mount: unknown filesystem type 'LVWM2_member'

Here is the syslog from the installation session. The disk decrypts
fine manually from a working Live session.

[Bug 1377878] Re: PPC - GUI freezes except for mouse pointer

2014-10-18 Thread Lars Noodén
Yes, there are problems on the Alternate, but different ones. The
alternate won't complete installation either, but for different reasons
so no data on the GUI can be gathered.

When I ssh in to a Live session that has locked, I can see from 'top'
that the load averages are very low.

Both sets of logs are from the installation. The logs are from during
the installation process but after the freeze.

About the kernel parameters, if I boot with radeonfb: etc like used to
be required, then all I get after the splash screen is a black screen
with no mouse and no way to get to console either.
