solved: how to get Orca to speak in lightdm

Thanks to Rob for helping me out and also thanks to B.H. I'm an end

Hi,
You can make sure your /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf looks like this:

[SeatDefaults]
greeter-session=unity-greeter
user-session=ubuntu

Good luck

somebody told me to set unity greeter as the default but I don't know

Hi,
first check to see what your current display manager is.

type:
cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager

Note the capital X in the above command.
If anything other than /usr/sbin/lightdm is printed that is your
problem.
If so try:
   sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
arrow down to lightdm if there are other choices and push enter.
Then next time you start your machine you should be using lightdm.

Good luck

dpkg -l|grep lxdm
and see if it returns anything II means that a given pkg is installed.
sudo apt-get purge for anything lubuntu specific to remove...
Then reconfigure lightdm. Actually, it may have been removed as a

to see if you

It's worth checking log files to see exactly what was done if you

In lightdm I use ctrl_S to start Orca to speak. But now it won't work. a
sighted person told me that there is only one account shown in the login
screen. so I think it is not lightdm. In the software Centre I delete
the Lubuntu-desktop but I still stay with another dm.

LXDM does not speak as far as I know, but perhaps it is not used.

how to get Orca to speak in lightdm

2015-04-27 Thread Milton

Hello List,

I use Ubuntu Trusty with Orca 3.14.3 in Unity. I thought to show some
friends the Lubuntu desktop and install this with the help of the
software centre. But after this I have no Orca in the login screen. I
did in a terminal:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
without success.
can you tell me how to get Orca to speak again in the login screen?
Thank you.

Thank you Brian.
I removed all the suspicious PPAs using ppa-purge (sudo apt-get install
ppa-purge)

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa (just in case you had disabled the
ppa before(
sudo apt-get update (idem)
sudo ppa-purge  ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa  (I don't remember if this
is necessary or if ppa-purge already does this)

 the same with ppa ppa:bumblebee/stable

then
sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg*
sudo apt-get purge nvidia*

then
sudo apt-get install nvidia-331
sudo reboot

after reboot, not only everything works perfectly (plugin or unplugging
the external monitor, suspending, etc) but the hardware graphic
acceleration is faster than ever! (running glxspheres )

THANK YOU!!

On thing is worth mentioning: if I disable all the Compiz effects,
plugging or unplugging an external monitor does not turn the desktop and
windows unresponsive, but unity panel and launcher, and also window
decoration (with the close and minimize buttons) disappear. Does this
give any clue? (particularly taking into account that Compiz was
upgraded last week, when the problem started).

[Bug 1426751] Re: Ubuntu-desktop not working when suspend/resume or connecting an external monitor -after upgrade this week (14.04)

2015-03-02 Thread Milton
I found a workaround.

I created two scripts (one of them I found it on this website, but now I
lost the link).

Let's called the first script: discover_session_bus_address.sh

#!/bin/bash

# Remember to run this script using the command source ./filename.sh

# Search these processes for the session variable
# (they are run as the current user and have the DBUS session variable set)
compatiblePrograms=( nautilus kdeinit kded4 pulseaudio trackerd )

# Attempt to get a program pid
for index in ${compatiblePrograms[@]}; do
   PID=$(pidof -s ${index})
if [[ ${PID} !=  ]]; then
break
fi
done
if [[ ${PID} ==  ]]; then
echo Could not detect active login session
return 1
fi

QUERY_ENVIRON=$(tr '\0' '\n'  /proc/${PID}/environ | grep
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS | cut -d = -f 2-)
if [[ ${QUERY_ENVIRON} !=  ]]; then
export DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS=${QUERY_ENVIRON}
echo Connected to session:
echo DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS=${DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS}
else
echo Could not find dbus session ID in user environment.
return 1
fi

return 0
Save it an then, in the same folder, create another script called
recover_unity.sh.

Code:

#!/bin/bash

export DISPLAY=:0
source ./discover_session_bus_address.sh unity
unity
save it and give both script execution permissions: chmod +x
discover_session_bus_address.sh chmod +x recover_unity.sh

Now, every time unity freezes, use CTRL+ALT+F1, login and, within the
folder where those scripts were saved, type

source recover_unity.sh

[Bug 1426751] [NEW] Ubuntu-desktop not working when suspend/resume or connecting an external monitor -after upgrade this week (14.04)

2015-02-28 Thread Milton
Public bug reported:

I was happily using 14.04 with my Lenovo Y50. When I installed it, I had
some troubles making my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB works with hardware
acceleration, etc, but at the end everything was OK.

THIS WEEK (around 02/25/2015) an update destroyed this beautiful
equilibrium: I can't resume after suspend and I can't plug or unplug my
external monitor without having a weird problem:

a) Desktop moves half of it size to the right.

b) Mouse works, but I can't click on anything. The only workaround is
killing the Xorg, and loosing the session.

What I tried, without success:

1) Downgrade Compiz (the first suspect, it was upgraded this week).
Nothing.

2) Install ALL possible NVIDIA drivers:

2.a) Nouveau

2.b) Nvidia 304 Nvidia 304 updates (blacklisting and purging nouveau)

2.c) Nvidia 331 Nvidia 331 updates (both from repository and NVidea
website). (blacklisting and purging nouveau)

2.d) Nvidia 340 (from Xorg-edgers ppa). (blacklisting and purging
nouveau)

2.e) In every case, I purged previous drivers before, reconfigure Xorg,
etc, etc,etc.

3) Reinstalling Unity and Ubuntu-desktop

I honestly don't know what else to do, but this situation it's very
annoying.

Any ideas? Please?

THANK YOU

[Bug 1311257] Re: Wifi cannot connect or unstable after suspend 14.04

2014-11-25 Thread Milton
Ok, a follow up:
An important thing is that my Wireless adapter is: Network controller: Intel
Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev 83)

So, my first comment (#13) comment had a problem, as I had tried so many
things that I one solution step on the other. The unnecesary modprobe
lines were product of a line that I had added to
/etc/pm/config.d/modules

SUSPEND_MODULES=$SUSPEND_MODULES iwldvm iwlwifi

Now, I commented that line (# ) and I added in my
/etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf:

options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

Lastly, the script in /etc/pm/sleep.d/ (in my case it's named:
/etc/pm/sleep.d/nm-prob ) now looks like this:

#!/bin/sh

case ${1} in
resume|thaw)
nmcli nm sleep false
#modprobe -rv iwldvm iwlwifi
#modprobe -v iwlwifi
#modprobe -v iwldvm
killall wpa_supplicant
dhclient -r wlan0
dhclient wlan0
nmcli nm sleep false
#restart network-manager
;;
esac

After TWO days I can confirm that these changes solved both the problem
after suspend as the unstable connection problem.

Hope it helps

[Bug 1386721] Re: Graphics Slow After Upgrade 14.04 - 14.10

2014-11-19 Thread milton hagler
I'm seeing xserver-xorg-video-intel already installed. It needed an
update which I did. Currently, running kernel 3.16.0-24-generic and have
been experiencing consistently many system hangs. Can move the mouse
pointer, even flash videos continue playing because can hear the sound
but the entire display is frozen. Seems to happen when the display is
being stressed usually with a second monitor and under load. Couple days
ago booted with 3.13.0-34-generic and the same thing happened. With
14.04, typically when freezes occurred if I waited a minute or 2 the
system would recover and I didn't need to force a hard reboot. Using
NVIDIA GeForce 610M Optimus hybrid graphics laptop and Bumblebee
3.2.1-5. Considering going back to 14.04.

reading mail in Thunderbird with Orca in Trusty

2014-09-04 Thread Milton

Hi all,
I use Ubuntu Trusty with Orca. I notice that reading mails in
Thunderbird 31.0 with the arrow keys Orca does not find all text.
Sometimes I then use the letters h, o or p with succes within the
incoming mail. Pressing f7 gives no result. Any idea? thanks.

backup app and Orca in Trusty

Hi,
In Ubuntu 12.04, Unity 2D the backup app did very well with Orca. In
Trusty I can work with the flat review but the tabs are all spoken by
Orca as PLANNING. Maybe a question of labeling?

Re: gnome desktop in 14.04 inaccessible?

2014-08-23 Thread Milton

Hi,
I have another experience.
I did:
sudo apt-get install gnome-session-flashback
and after choose gnome flashback metacity to start up.
alt_F1 takes me to the applications menu in the top menu bar and Orca is
doing well. The only thing I met is that I cannot get with Orca to the
Indicator applet where I can shutdown the machine. I do this by pressing
the power button and then a dialog box appear to shutdown the machine.

I also did:
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
and this is quite accessible with Orca.

Hi
I installed ubuntu gnome desktop on a test machine running ubuntu 14.04. I
wanted to see if gnome desktop was more accessible than unity.
I used the apt-get install ubuntu-gnome-desktop.
To my surprise it was not accessible at all.
First I selected gdm as the video manager as described in a article I found.
That loginscreen was not useable, couldn't change the session as I can with the
default login. Fixed that so I was back to lightdm and that login screen works.
Changed session to gnome and logged in.
The program menu with alt+f1 was not useable at all.
the panels seems to not work.
No menus so the panels (if they are there at all) so the content can be changed.
Any ideas here of a better desktop environment on ubuntu or is Vinux the only
usefull distro nowdays.
Ubuntu 12.04 was more usefull than this crap.
Don't want to go to Windows but if accessibility on linux is so useless I think
we don't have any options left.

Regards Tony

Well, perhaps I'll leave the Control S keystroke in place for the install
process only. Everywhere else will be Super + Alt + S. It should be noted that
the keystroke is not configurable on the Unity login screen, but it is
configurable for the desktop session, and should be configurable for gdm,
although I haven't checked. I prefer consistancy, but the amount of code to
keep Control S around for the installer is small enough such that it can be
left there.

It should be noted that we are in somewhat of a transition phase. Control S
still works in the Unity greeter login and during the install process if booted
directly to the install, but Super + Alt + S also works in the installer. Super
+ Alt + S does not currently work in the Unity greeter login, and I should
actually fix that. Eventually everything will move over to Super + Alt + S as
adopted by upstream.

Hi Luke,
Super_M does nothing, Super_S takes me to the top bar and Orca lands on
the Applications button. But I cannot get to the indicator applet.
There are 2 important items in de indicator applet: 1. wireless

If I can get how to put the shut down option into applications System
it will be great.

This doesn't happen all the time, but there doesn't seem to be a pattern to
it either. When it does go distorted, you can tab away from the control you
were on and tab back to it, and it will speak the control properly at the
normal speed.

I've done some searching but couldn't find any definite pointers that might
help pinpoint the problem.

Can anyone offer any suggestions of things to try?

Thanks in advance,

[Bug 1305412] [NEW] After locking screen sometimes must login twice

2014-04-09 Thread milton hagler
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 14.04 final beta. Intermittently, when I lock the screen
then unlock after a period of time the screen locks again by itself and
I must unlock one more time.

To date I haven't found a pattern for when this happens other than it
seems to occur when the computer has been locked for several minutes.
The computer has not been suspended.

Steps:
1. Lock screen
2. Leave locked for several minutes
3. Login to unlock

Screen refreshes to the desktop. Then all of a sudden the screen locks
itself and I must re-enter my password and unlock the screen yet again.
After that the system is stable and I can continue to work.

[Bug 1300102] [NEW] Grub EFI partition broken when installing 14.04 with 13.10 installed

2014-03-31 Thread milton hagler
Public bug reported:

13.10 was already installed and my working version in its own partition
(dev/sda3)
14.04 beta 2 was newly installed into its own partition (dev/sda4)

System was left unbootable and broken because Grub could not be found at
boot time.

To try and fix the problem I used the boot-repair-disk-64bit.iso
(dowloaded from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/boot-repair-
cd/files/latest/download?source=recommended). This was apparently
updated last for 13.04. The contents of README.diskdefines are:

#define DISKNAME  Lubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail - Release amd64
#define TYPE  binary
#define TYPEbinary  1
#define ARCH  amd64
#define ARCHamd64  1
#define DISKNUM  1
#define DISKNUM1  1
#define TOTALNUM  0
#define TOTALNUM0  1

The tool was not able to run completely on its own with the Recommended
repair option which in the past had worked properly. Instead, it gave
me a list of commands to run in a terminal which I ran. The commands
said they worked and the repair tool completed without error but the
system could still not boot afterwards.

--
How I fixed the problem:

Booted Live/CD
Deleted EFI and 14.04 partitions
Recreated EFI partition
Reinstalled 14.04

Apparently, the same can be accomplished from the command line but
didn't see the posting before reinstalling.

---
Upon further investigation, it appears that 14.04 uses a newer version of Grub?

Although, the source of the problem may not be related to Ubuntu
specifically, because EFI was introduced by Microsoft, it nonetheless
reflects badly on Ubuntu when the user expects the installer to simply
just work. These kind of issues really turn off users to Linux since
they are a headache and eat up so much time.

Thanks Brian, I tried with another mirror and it works. So I already have
my Ubuntu updated.

Many thanks.

 For some reason the release upgrader was not able to find the ubuntu-
 minimal package on your mirror (gt.archive.ubuntu.com). Perhaps try
 another mirror or try the upgrade again in the hope that your mirror is
 working now.

[Bug 1260150] [NEW] Mouse freezes when power adapter not plugged in

2013-12-11 Thread milton hagler
Public bug reported:

If the power adapter is plugged in (with power) the mouse works
perfectly as well as the track pad. If the power adapter is unplugged
the mouse freezes after about 10 seconds of inactivity. Plug the adapter
back in and it works again after being unplugged and plugged in again.
If I keep the mouse moving it works, as soon as it is motionless for a
few seconds it hangs.

help with magnification in 12.04

2013-09-22 Thread Milton

Hello List,
I use ubuntu 12.04 with Orca 3.4.2 in unity 2D and also installed the
fallback session. So I also can work with GNOME without effects. I only
work with speech.
For a couple of friends who wants to try Ubuntu with magnification I
need your help.

In the keyboard preferences on the tab short cut keys I set:
1. Alt_Control_M to toggle magnification on or off;
2. Alt_arrow-up for zoom in;
3. Alt_arrow-down for zoom out.
But there is no result by pressing those shortcut keys.
What should I do to have magnification work?
Many thanks.

[Bug 1204853] [NEW] Wine 1.4, 1.5, 1.6-amd64 all have unmet dependencies

2013-07-25 Thread milton hagler
Public bug reported:

When attempting to install wine-1.6 for Ubuntu 13.04 x64 the following
error message occurs:

The following packages have unmet dependecies:
  wine1.6 depends on wine1.6-i386 (= 1.6-0ubuntu1~ppa1)
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages

I tried installing wine1.6, 1.5, then 1.4 and even just wine1.6-i386.
All report the same error.

The package is ubuntu-wine-ppa but it is giving me an error when I try
to subnit this form. Thus, I selected I don't know.

don't work very well with Orca.

  I installed the packages :
  - compizconfig-setting-manger

  - compiz-fusion

  - gnome-session-fallback

  My configuration :

  Ubntu 12.04 + gnome session fallback + compiz enhanced Zoom

  Your are two choices :

  - for low vision with orca + compiz (work partially)

  - for blind : gnome-session + no effect (without compiz)

mbrola in Orca

2013-07-02 Thread Milton

Hi,
I use Ubuntu 12.04 with Orca 3.4.2 and espeak. I tried the Dutch voice
of Mbrola. In /etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf I uncommand the line:

AddModule espeak-mbrola-generic sd_generic espeak-mbrola-generic.conf
So I could chose for mbrola in Orca. The settings of the volume, pitch
and speed in Orca does not effect the mbrola voice. Do you know how to
change the volume, pichtrate and speed for the mbrola voice? Thanks.

[Bug 1026254] Re: Open with on folders was removed, Ubuntu should consider patching back

2013-04-29 Thread Milton
I agree that this a very unpleasant change. I tried the patch, but I
can't build the nautilus source (in the make, I get fatal error:
zeitgeist.h: No such file or directory, even if I have the zeitgeist
package installed**).

Is there any other way?

** Reply to comment #13: In order to install a patch, you have to
1) Copy the patch file to a new folder
2) In that folder, do a sudo apt-get source PACKAGE_NAME
3) Copy the patch file into the new package folder in that dir
4) type patch -p1  patch_file_name
5) sudo make (maybe you'll need to do a sudo . /configure first). Here you'll
have to install all the dependencies that the package need to be build.
6) make install

Re: virtualbox in 12.04 refuses to install a guest

2013-02-22 Thread Milton
I was very surprised how well Orca works with virtualbox, not for 100% but
enough to find my way.
After starting virtualbox I pressed Control_N for to start similar clicking
on the button NEW, which is not accessible for Orca. The Tab key navigates
through the items. After finishing the settings of a Guest it will show in
the List. Rightclicking on the Guest opens a submenu accessible with the
arrow keys. Also the flat review keys read some of the screen.
A very important thing is to add a cd / dvd player for to install from a cd
or dvd. This was done by first open the Setting menu and tab once from the
Save Option. Orca says Tree and I did a right click to open the dropdown
menu. With the arrow down key I then do the rest.

I really can't tell. Before the cd with the install of the Guest stops
spinning and a message appears that there was no bootable cd found. Now the
installation runs succesfully. Maybe it wasn't the qt-at-spi but as an end

If you're running a 32-bit version of Ubuntu,you shouldn't need to

Hi.
If memory serves me, I had a similar problem when I used Ubuntu 12.10.

Not sure, but I think the problem was caused by lack of installation of
header files from the new kernel, which prevented the compilation of
modules related to this card.

Look for a package named linux-kernel-headers, linux-headers or something
of that sort and see if it is installed. I am not sure about the correct
name.
If it is installed, check if the installed version is compatible with the
version of the kernel.

Hope that helps.
Thanks.

  either skype or the skype dbus option have always worked here. Sadly At least
in older Ubuntu releases you can't accept calls with the pidgin plugin anymore
either.
  As long as you've given permission to use pidgin in skype you should have no
trouble, and honestly I don't even think I had to do this.
  Other's have said that they can accept calls directly with Skype in precise I
believe. Get sighted help and make sure thhat keyboard shortcuts are enabled,
and that pidgin is allowed access.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-24 Thread milton hagler
Are other Ubuntu flavors also being impacted? How about Kubuntu, Pinguy
and other desktops such as LXDE, XFCE. Perhaps this can help narrow the
problem down. I've experienced the hanging problem apparently randomly
and without USB devices attached. It seems to happen most when I'm using
Firefox 13.0. The mouse cursor still moves but no keyboard and cannot
click on anything. Also I've had the windows title bar disappear
repeatedly. Sometimes I can make it recover, but usually not and more
recently when I do a Unity reset (unity --reset) thes script hangs and

[Bug 1006293] [NEW] exiqgrep fails to parse output of exim4 -bp if the mail message is less than 1k

2012-05-30 Thread Milton Ngan
Public bug reported:

If you have a message in the queue that is less than 1k in size,
exiqgrep will fail with a message like this:

Line mismatch:   2m   719 1SZe77-00047t-V9 r...@xxx.com

The problem is that the regular expression requires there to be a suffix
on the size. Based on the previous implementations of exiqgrep, it looks
like a ? is missing after the [A-Z].

-   if ($line =~
/^\s*(\w+)\s+((?:\d+(?:\.\d+)?[A-Z])?)\s*(\w{6}-\w{6}-\w{2})\s+(.*?)/) {
+   if ($line =~
/^\s*(\w+)\s+((?:\d+(?:\.\d+)?[A-Z]?)?)\s*(\w{6}-\w{6}-\w{2})\s+(.*?)/) {

workspace switcher is not accissible with Orca

2012-05-24 Thread Milton
Hi all,
I did a fresh install of Ubuntu Precise and got Orca 3.4.1 running in Unity 2D.
With Control_Alt_arrow-left/right I switch to another workspace.
I like to work in 3 or more workspaces.
With Alt_F1 and down-arrow I found the workspace switcher but Orca only says
pane and nothing else. With the flat review Orca go silent. Can you confirm? It
will be very helpfull if the workspace switcher is accessible with Orca.

metacity folder and alt short keystrokes

2012-05-23 Thread Milton
Hi all,
I did a fresh install of Ubuntu Precise and got Orca 3.4.1 running in Unity 2D.
When Alt_Tab for switching windows, Control_Alt_right-arrow to switch to the
next workspace and Control_Super_D for minimizing all windows won't work
deleting the .gconf/apps/metacity folder solves the problem after logging out
and logging in.
Fortunately Control_Alt_T to open a terminal, Alt_F1 to the launcher still
doing fine when this problem occurs.
The next time I starts up the machine I have the same problem with the Alt_Tab,
etc. Do I miss something else to do for this problem to solve?

I'm waiting for the new Vinux based on precise to come out before trying
our new LTS, or at least I'll wait a little while; so I've been learning a
bit about what is and isn't possible from this list and some other
reading.
One of the things that won me over to Ubuntu/Linux in the beginning was
the ease of backing up and making custom bootable USB-pendrives and
live-CD's.
I know that the remastersys dev seems to be less than enthusiastic
regarding this program of late. (of late means more than a year actually)
Why is the question. Is the software fragile, bugs just waiting to pop out
with any changes and updates, or does he just not have the time to give to
proper maintenence, (with out more compensation anyway), or is there some
issue with the latest Debian/Ubuntu releases that complicates things?
Last I heard he was indicating the second, but who knows.
AnywayI hope remastersys dev resumes, /or some other similarly usable
program is available. Abnd of course we need this program to be
accessible.
I can't believe there's nothing in precise to take remastersys's place.
Have you Googled for this, or checked Precise's release notes, change-log
and similar documentation?
I'm going to do a quick search , but don't have much time right now. I'll
let you know if I find anything I'll let you know, and please do the same
for me.

Seems the problem only happens when you haven't saved the speech
settings. So I'll fix this bug, but your workaround is to adjust the
rate first by the preferences dialog and save the change. After that the
keybindings should work.

keystrokes also appears in the short key list when I double click
Insert_h. But nothing happens after when I press Insert_up-arrow or
Insert-down-arrow. Can somebody confirm this and how can I solve

how to get more applications in the launchbar?

2012-05-14 Thread Milton
Hi all,
I use Ubuntu Precise Unity 2D with Orca 3.4.1.
With Alt_F1 I go to the launchbar and with arrow-down to the applications
listed. With twice arrow-right a sub menu opens and I can delete an application
from the launchbar.
With the super key I go the Dash and find all applications. A sighted person
can drag an appkication to the launchbar. Shift_F10 is not working to get the
sub menu for to find the option to let an application present in the launchbar.
Is there a way to do so?
