[Bug 280997] Re: solid-bluetooth needs update for bluez 4.x
frapell: It's great that you want to assist in fixing this! You will probably have more success offering your help in https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172267 though, as this essentially is a KDE bug. In https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172267#c8 Tom references the repository experimental code can be found in that has already partially been ported. It would also help if every one of us voted an the KDE bug so that it gets fixed in the 4.2 release. SRELysian: I guess this bug doesn't really move forward simply because no (K)Ubuntu developer is personally affected. Don't get me wrong, I am as frustrated about this as you are but after all, all our days only have 24 hours so I'm not sure it makes sense to be angry at the developers (be it (K)Ubuntu or KDE). Clearly, this issue sneaked in shortly before the final move to KDE 4 and once it came up, the transition was already too far progressed to stop it with the release coming too soon to fix it in time. So now we're just stuck with it. Re: [Bug 309311] Re: 8.04 blinking caps lock on bootup
I previously downloaded madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6. I have already seen the instructions at the link you gave, but I found the English so poor that I could not understand the instructions. For instance, 1) First purge any presence or activity of any form of ndiswrapper -- what does that mean in English? After reboot the Hardware drivers ...must have a red light aside - not particularly informative. These instructions also specify 5) Enable back both drivers, and these drivers are already enabled after the madwifi installation. However, I was able to find another web page with clear instructions, http://brunoabinader.blogspot.com/2008/05/atheros-ar5bxb63-on-ubuntu-hardy-heron.html . Notes:I teach a unix fundamentals and unix shell scripting course several times a year in Toronto, but my area of expertise is Oracle, not unix systems administration. I am a vi expert, so I don't need gedit or nano. Also note that I have disabled the touchpad on my laptop (fn+F7), and I use a USB mouse. As well, linux is installed in partition 3 (with swap in partition 4). Windows Vista (which came with the laptop) is installed in the first two partitions. Also note that I think I am using the 32-bit version, but I don't know how to confirm that. I printed out the README and INSTALL documents from the madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6 directory. I started ubuntu in recovery mode, selected root mode, commented out ath_pci from /etc/modules (added as part of the madwifi install), exited from the terminal session and selected normal boot. There were no madwifi entries. The normal boot encountered a kernel panic (not syncing: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!). I rebooted 2.6.24-22 in recovery mode, entered root mode, navigated into the madwife-hal-0.10.5.6 directory, issued a make clean and a make (I omitted the make install this time since it not specified in the INSTALL instructions). Then I exited from the root terminal session and did a normal boot, which came up. The instructions in the web page you sent said to enable both drivers, so I accessed the hardware drivers window and enabled the Atheros HAL entry, which was disabled. When I checked the box to enable the Atheros 802.11 wireless LAN cards module, Linux locked up with a kernel panic (blinking caps lock). I think it is time to give up on 2.6.24-22. I taught file structures and processing part-time at a university for 24 years, and I always told my students don't keep doing what doesn't work. What I would like to do instead is to work on the Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit version, to see if I can get that to work. I tried it once, and that's why I went back to 8.04. I do not need the wireless to work to access the internet. I can connect the laptop to a wired ethernet port, if necessary. The worst part of starting over is that if it fails, I have to go back to 8.04, and then there are 250+ updates to do, and that takes 12+ hours to download and apply. I also have to restore all my Documents files from my backup DVD. I have 20 pages of instructions, so I can do it the same way each time, and not repeat the mistakes I may have made earlier. On Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 6:07 AM, Claudio Moretti flyingsta...@gmail.comwrote: Well, let's try another way. Boot Ubuntu in recovery mode (2.6.24-22), when prompted, go to a root shell. You will need to edit /etd/modules and disabling madwifi from boot; the simplest editor is nano, so give nano /etc/modules, find all occurrences with madwifi inside and comment them by adding a # at the beginning of the line; save (Ctrl + O - Enter) and exit (Ctrl + X); then reboot in normal mode; it should not crash. If you want some details while booting, when usplash (the black and orange screen with the progress bar) appears, press Ctrl + Alt + F1 and you'll see boot details; When booted, follow the instructions you find at http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=5703118postcount=3 (download files before starting editing or you won't have an active internet connection =) ) I don't know if you have found this guide before, and if you download the updated version of madwifi-hal every time, but it seems to work; sorry if I can't help more :( -- 8.04 blinking caps lock on bootup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/309311 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. Am I correct in assuming that the procedure you are outlining will remove 2.6.24-22 and then re-install it? Thanks. Reboot and then start your Update Manager from System Administration Update Manager; update repos and it will ask you to install the new kernel; you can also reinstall it from Synaptic. The other way is: from a Terminal, launch sudo apt-get purge linux- headers-2.6.24-22-generic linux-image-2.6.24-22-generic linux- restricted-modules-2.6.24-22-generic (without quotes). You will be prompted for your password; enter it and, when it's finished, reboot. [Bug 309377] [NEW] System freezes, dies and won't boot
Public bug reported: It started 2 hours ago, it's really weird! I left my Desktop machine, with wired internet, for an half an hour or so. The screensaver was on and seem like it had freezed, moving the mouse, touching a key, pressing ctrl+alt+backspace, ctrl+alt+delete...didn't work !! I did a hard reboot. First time I rebooted, the progressbar stopped about 12% in the boot up and the system freezed. The only way I could start up my system was to boot up with the install CD and then choose Start up with first harddrive. When up and running, the User switcher applet was disabled the first time. The second time it came up properly though. Second time I tried, it stopped at the Grub screen (which I have enabled). Third time, I didn't even get to BIOS boot screen. All black screen and no harddrive activity. I have this system: Processor:AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ Motherboard: ASUSTek A8NE-FM Videocard: Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT Kernel: 2.6.27-9-generic Ubuntu: 8.10 Interpid Ibex I have installed the Nvidia BETA video driver 180.06, but I dont think this is the problem ? It could be an issue with the screensaver, as it was active when it happened. I now have disabled the screensaver, hope it works :/ I've never had this issue before, every version of Ubuntu has always been extremely robust and friendly :) But it would be nice to know which logfile is the right one to diagnose this ?? [Bug 309377] Re: System freezes, dies and won't boot
The issue still remains ! This time I tried a normal restart from the User Switcher Applet. But the system wouldn't shut down properly, the progressbar turned from left to right, more than it used to, then the console cursor blinked fast in upper right corner of the screen. I then had to hold down the Power Off Button to make a hard shutdown. I was waiting 15 min. to be shure that the RAM was completely empty. When I started again all I got was a black screen, and no activity on the harddrive. The only possible way, for me, was to use the install CD and choose Start from the first Harddrive. I've attached the messages log for inspection. ** Attachment added: messages http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20550981/messages -- System freezes, dies and won't boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/309377 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 144638] Re: ssh -X and run gnome apps then exit problem
I found this thread via googling. This seems to be a gnome bug that didn't exist in previous versions. I invoked it when upgrading boxes from fedora 7 to fedora 10. I do not run Ubuntu, as I've been a Fedora user since 1.0, and prior to that (mid-nineties) I used slackware when I wasn't compiling my own ( I've run enough distros for one lifetime...) This seems to have something to do with the SSH server-side closing before the launched gnome program has a chance to open the display. So for example if I launch -- via 'ssh -f -n -Y' -- a gnome program with redirected stdout to /tmp/foo gets the following message: golem-ROOT-25-/var/log ty /tmp/foo Cannot open display: Run '/usr/bin/gnome-terminal --help' to see a full list of available command line options. Removing the redirect starts up the program just fine, however, the client-side console from which SSH was launched remains visible. Since the problem was closing the SSH session before the X display could be launched, the solution was to add sleep(1) which allows the display connection to be established, and then the SSH-session closes. Adding sleep(1) allows the scripts I use to launch gnome-terminals from windows to work again: e.g. for a remote session with forwarded/encrypted X connection: @echo off REM \cygwin\bin\ssh.exe -f n...@192.168.0.9 /usr/bin/xterm -display gnuveau:0.0 /dev/null /dev/null \cygwin\bin\ssh.exe -f n...@192.168.0.9 /usr/bin/gnome-terminal --display=gnuveau:0.0 /dev/null /dev/null ; exec sleep 1 Local connection w/o encrypted X session: @echo off REM \cygwin\bin\ssh.exe -f n...@192.168.0.9 /usr/bin/xterm -display gnuveau:0.0 /dev/null /dev/null \cygwin\bin\ssh.exe -f n...@192.168.0.9 /usr/bin/gnome-terminal --display=gnuveau:0.0 /dev/null /dev/null ; exec sleep 1 N.B.: i use '' because i use tcsh shell. Re: [Bug 309311] Re: 8.04 blinking caps lock on bootup
I purged the three 2.6.24-22 kernel modules you specified (Mark for complete removal), and successfully rebooted the Acer Aspire 5100. Then I used Synaptic to re-install the modules. I tried Update Manager first, but it didn't advise me the new modules were available. I clicked the Check button, but it still didn't see the new versions. There were nine 8.04 updates pending, but I ignored those, so as not to compromise my test. After the re-installation, I re-booted the machine, and it booted successfully this time with 2.6.24-22. However, I had no wireless capability. The wireless router is one floor below my apartment, so wired ethernet is not an option. To restore wireless functionality, I had to make and sudo make install the madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6 software, and I noticed that it updated the 2.6.24-22 kernel modules. When I rebooted with the 2.6.24-22 kernel after the madwifi update, the boot stopped as before, with a blinking caps lock (kernel panic). During the boot, the boot progress bar is displayed, and I can watch the bar progress to about 95% boot completion before the kernel panic. Once my machine locked up (with the kernel panic), I turned it off by holding down the power button, and then I rebooted with the 2.6.24-16 kernel, and that worked successfully. After completion of the boot and my login, the wireless connected automatically, and my VPN definition was still there. This proves that it is the madwifi installation the corrupts the 2.6.24-22 kernel. I don't understand why it is necessary for the madwifi installation to modify the 2.6.24-22 kernel, since the wireless connection works with the unmodified 2.6.24-16 kernel. Obviously the madwifi installation also creates configuration files and/or installs other software to get wireless access working. I wonder if there is a way to partially install madwifi without affecting the 2.6.24-22 kernel, but still enable wireless functionality. Comments? [Bug 280997] Re: solid-bluetooth needs update for bluez 4.x
How on earth is bluez-gnome not an option? I can't fathom why something (a bluetooth GUI!) many people have used for all of the recent releases should be stripped out completely if there's a perfectly fine solution available. Now if there's a serious *functional* problem when using bluez-gnome, that's a different story! But it appears to be just a vanity issue, does it not? In that case I would strongly suggest going with bluez-gnome until there's a working KDE counterpart available. It's not like this would be the first transitional package of all times.. Of course I completely agree with Christian's last 3 sentences. We should never have been in this situation in the first place. But we are now and simply looking the other way won't help. Bottom line is this: not having a bluetooth GUI of some sort is a *defect* for many users. Using one of a different desktop environment most likely wouldn't even be noticed.. As a last thought: if the concern is that a gnome component would require too many libs that take away hard drive space, then how about popping up a window saying hey, HAL has detected a bluetooth adapter. would you like to install bluez-gnome, requiring X mb on your hard drive? -- solid-bluetooth needs update for bluez 4.x https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/280997 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdebase-workspace in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
