Subject: [ubuntu-in] Alternative to Tally

Hi,
When I was discussing someone over the adoption of Open-Source against
Microsoft's closed sources and proprietary solutions, I stuck at one
thing. The other guy asked if there is some alternative to Tally? As I
don't know, i thought I should consult the newsgroup and also searched
Internet. With search I could not find anything.
If there isn't an alternative to tally, we will have to think over
forming a group and starting a project like Tally.

Let me know if there is alternative present or not? (Financial
Calculation with Tax assessment software package)

2006-11-14 Thread RajaSekhar Yeruva
Try turning on your speaker phone button before dialing. I use same procedure to connect using my Tata Walky. #777 is tata's number. Are you sure is it the same number for Reliance?? Also Name server details might change. Once you are successful dialing It lists the DNS(name) servers it is connection through. Usually the output of wvdial defaults will overwrite th resolv.conf. If it doesn't then you have to edit the /etc/resolv.conf to have the correct name server names.ThanksRaj- Original Message From: Aman Mehta <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>To: ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.comSent: Tuesday, November 14, 2006 6:52:55 PMSubject:

Re: [ubuntu-in] My Saga of upgrading Dapper to Edgy

2006-10-30 Thread RajaSekhar Yeruva
Thanks Anurag for your feedback and suggestions. So
far I installed it on 4 machines. I dont see any major
issues. Except the a creative Webcam everything seemed
to detect and work out of the box. Even the Wireless
card/media keys/card reader on HP laptop seems to work
fine. I also feel the best way to upgrade is
dist-upgrade with little hassle. But its a single step
process to keep all your existing settings. and
upgrade to latest versions of your existing programs.
You may encounter minor problems if you tweaked your
system too much for custom kernels and go away from
std repos.

Thanks

[ubuntu-in] My Saga of upgrading Dapper to Edgy

2006-10-29 Thread RajaSekhar Yeruva
Hello People,
Let me share my experiences upgrading to edgy from
dapper. I started off with downloading alternative
install cd. After 24 hrs of downloading with around
six disconnections with my stupid 128 Kbps internet
connection. I somehow managed to complete the
download. Later I burnt image to CD. To my horror I
found Checksum mismatch. I thought I will take chances
and tried updating using cd rom upgrade option. After
caching 80% of the files it gave me error. I think
this is due to broken download. Now I don’t want to re
download it again. I copied all the .deb present in
the CD to /var/cache/apt/archies/ folder. By default
all are read-only, So, I gave 777 permissions to all
the debs in the directory. (Not sure if its the
correct thing to do But my R&D shows this method
actually works). Now I edited to /etc/apt/sources.lst
to replace all instances of dapper with edgy and
saved. Then Typed in the following command as per
official guide sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get
dist-upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.
Two instances of dist upgrade is required for upstart
to install. Now I crossed my fingers and rebooted the
system to discover that my x server crashed. That
system was having a via graphics chip. After little
googling with txt browser elinks I managed to find the
fix. I just did sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg .
One its done I rebooted again. I could have simply
typed startx command. But Just to make sure I rebooted
and every thing seemed to work fine.. All my old
programs updated with our any issues. So that system
is up and running. Now its time to upgrade my friends
system. This time I took the .deb files from
/var/cache/apt/archies/ folder of already installed
system and repeated the process. This time it even got
better. No X server issues also, This one was using
Intel graphics chip. Finally time to update my NVIDIA
graphics card system. I repeated the same process.
This time it had to download some Nvidia-glx and some
machine specific files and upgrade went very smoothly.
No issues once I rebooted. It even enabled Graphics
acceleration which I enabled in dapper version.

Conclusions:
1. Best way to upgrade is to do a fresh install.
2. Use Bit torrent instead of download managers for
better load balancing as well it will take care of
checksum errors. And download the chunk that is
corrupted due to network/ power outage.
3. Don’t be afraid of recent posts about horrors of
upgrading. Be little adventurous.
4. Many people say backup your important personal
files. I don’t see a reason to do it. At the most it
will only screw up the x server or some device error.
There is no way t can wipe out your hard disk. So, It
is safe you continue with out backing up. Worst case
you have to take out your disk and connect to some
other running system and copy the files.
5. Is the Edgy is so bleeding edgy... I don’t think
so...
6. Observed little performance and GUI especially text
display issues with Edgy.

Suggestion:
1. Plan a weekend to do upgrade.
2. Don’t panic it’s after all a computer. It is almost
impossible to screw it up unless you intend to drop it
from your balcony.
3. Please refrain from upgrade using dialup
connection. (I have been trying from 2 days)
4. Have patience.

Happy *bunting

RealTek NIC cards suck on Linux. I think they are from from Intex. There was a lengthy Talk on Orkut Ubuntu India Community regarding this... May people complained about this... They never work fine on Linux. I suggest you to go for D-Link / any other NIC cards. D-Link even ships with Linux driver CD. Don't think you will ever need it anyways... D-link costs around 300rs. You can get a decent one for 200+. Linux supports almost 99% of Wired NIC cards. Hi Ashfaq,
Welcome to Ubuntu Mailing list. Come to you problem.
Are you trying to dual boot along with your Windows
PC. or you are trying to dedicate whole computer to
Ubuntu.
Also tell us what option you have choosen while
partioning your Disk. There will be three options.
1. Partition Entire disk
2. Choose largest continuous volume
3. Manua1 partition.

I recommand you to use 3 rd option. Prior to this You
need to make a root and swap partition ready for
ubuntu install.
First answer these questions. Later we will guide you
through the steps or send you a link that helps you
install correctly

Thanks
