Thanks for your kind words :-) but I mave to admit that my little tweak
doesnt fix all problems, like Totem not working without Pulse ( and I'm

A lot of things just work in Ubuntu. I have used Linux (Redhat) as a

switch to Linux on my desktop also.
Things seam to happen fast in Ubuntu ( allthou some might say TOO fast ).
I think it's a bit of a joke to have an audio-focussed distro in which
the first things I have to do post-install are disable some of the
default features and manually edit settings.

I have to agree here, my check-list of things to do after a re-install
grows with every release, sad but true.
but at some point you just want to make some music and not have to
bother with all the technical stuff, and getting to know a new distro is
still more trouble than tweaking Ubuntu so it fits... at least for now.

I think you are right in assuming that Pulse isnt going away anytime

Re: Dssi-Vst and Ubuntu Studio

2009-12-09 Thread sandie
First of all, sorry to teza if I'm hijacking this thread, but it's a
very sensitive subject for me :-)

I had a look at LV2, very nice indeed, but... My problem is not lack of
LinuxDSP's/VST-FX, but VST-instruments.
I know of Mda and other very cool projects, but haven't seen a virtual
drumkit that comes close to one of the existing VSTi ones (like XLN).

Maybe once Ardour reaches 3.0 (and have a midi editor), we will finaly
see some pro drum synths for Linux that doesn't rely on ancient
proprietary stuff. Until then I'll try to put together a frontend for
dssi-vst like teza suggested, if anyone have ideas I'd be happy to hear
them.

So far I have :
A program that can launch multiple VSTi from a predefined directory.
Posibility of viewing terminal output of each VSTi.
Killing non-responsive plugins with a click of a button.

What I'm working on :
A way to save sessions, something like lash but a bit more pretty (I
like pretty things :-) )

Any Ideas ?

I use them a lot.
ZynAddSubFx and Bristol are both on my favorite list of
synths/v-inst/fx, but unfortunaly the list is kind'a small if you
exclude Win-VST.

I havent had any serious problems using them with dssi-vst, but I havent
tested extensively and only one at a time, like XLN addictive drums
for when I practice my e-drums or VoxengoBoogex for guitar.
I have removed Pulse, but other than that, I just run them with vsthost
/_path_to_/vsti.dll and most of them work, If I'm composing/editing I
just load them in my host (XT2) but I like the idea of just clicking on
the drums icon on my desktop and play without having to start my host

Hi Asmo

Do you have two soundcards in your pc ? is the ALC268 onboard ?

If youre not using the onboard, I can recomend backlisting it and the run :
sudo apt-get -y --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
sudo apt-get -y install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils

And maybe :
sudo apt-get install esound esound-clients esound-common libesd-alsa0

I'm sure someone on this list can come up with a better way of doing
this, but at least this works for me :-)
Actualy I use my homemade UbuntuAudioTweaks program to do it (

should do it just as well.

the most common question I get when I install it for a fellow mussician,
is why Ubustu doen't have a without Pulse option in the install, or
maybe just as an option in ubuntu-studio-controls ?
I managed to make a small Python gui program that (among other things)
disables Pulse permanently or just for the sesion, but allthou it works
(at least on my pc), I don't understand half of the code myself.

Would you share that python code with us? :) We could work in adding
it to ubuntustudio-controls. It will certainly help with the
 pulseaudio yes-or-no battle :P

Of course :-)
I have mentioned it before on this list, but didn't get much response,
so I didn't think it was relevant.
All of my projects are available on my website www.sandgreen.dk under
python, but I have only been using python for a couple of months, so
please do not expect too much, all I realy did was use the bash commands
I found elsewhere and add a little Python.
You say below that you would love to contribute but don't know how to
package. Yet you have a very useful python app. Packaging is just one
of the vertices of the project.

Please, anyone interested to contribute to the project, even if you
only have 20 minutes every week. Contact Gustin Johnson, there are
contribution tasks for every range of knowledge, interest, and time
 available.

It would be cool if we had a to do list (like someone else mentioned),
and I would be happy to help building and maintaining an online version
of this.
As I mentioned my Python skills are somewhat limited, but I would love
to help any way I can.

btw. should I just contact Gustin Johnson by mail, or is there a IRC
where he hangs out ?

Cool n' quiet ?

2009-03-31 Thread sandie
I've been running Ibex with a generic kernel as main os the past month
or so, and to my big supprise, my DAW (EnergyXT2 with several wine
VSTi's) works fine in this configuration.

but to the point...

I have tested the Beta Jaunty and had some problems getting it to boot
in the first place, but once I updated my BIOS to the latest available
and enabled Cool n' quiet in my BIOS I was able to install, thou I
still got some warnings at boot and had to use startx to boot.
I wanted to use the ATI propriotary driver (yes I know... not
recomended), and got some strangeness with panels becoming empty and/or
useless whenever I tried to change the theme, and visuals was a no-go,
but I keep it around on a seperate disk and check in daily to see if
anything have changed.

I didnt think the BIOS settings would have any impact on my Ibex, but my
DAW became slow and sometimes unresponsive untill I disabled the Cool
n' quiet in my BIOS.

Will the Jaunty main release require Cool n' quiet to work ? and if
so... why ?
Have any of you expirenced simliar wierdness with this ?

btw. my specs are :

mo.bo. : ASUS M2N68
cpu : Athlon X2 5000+
ram : 4G
graphics : ATI Radeon 4830
snd : M2496

I use the 32 bit since I need Flash and Java for none-audio-related work.

sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart

This should restart ALSA, at least it does on my Ibex and Hardy.

Of particular interest is this section:
 http://wiki.x.org/wiki/radeonhd#head-f79351b4e2b19fad40529ce297ac2d2a1e90354c

This driver is very much a moving target. It looks promising but I am
holding off. Right now the only video device that I will buy is an
Intel. It may not have anywhere near the performance of the ATI and
Nvidia offerings, but it has a proper upstream driver, which for me is
far more important. I do not have any of the supported hardware so I
 cannot be of more use.

Right now I'm using Ubuntustudio 8.04, but later today I plan to split

I had heard that Intrepid had a version of radeonhd shipping with it. I
do not know which version they shipped or how well it works. Given the
pace of development, i would guess that the Intrepid driver is already
 stale.

For the record, there are two 3d drivers for ATI hardware. There is the
classic binary blob called fglrx. This is the propritary driver and it
supports older ATI hardware as well. The newer radeonhd driver only
supports the latest ATI devices but it is open source, much like the
Intel driver. Check the radeonhd site for more info.

Some time ago I made a wineasio-script and placed it on my website :

This month alone, it have been downloaded 726 times, so I know theres a

As my site also mentions I am a musissian, NOT a programmer, so thou I

way of doing it is the best way.
Someone resently told me that these simple three lines is enough :

Is that realy all ?
What about system sounds ?

In the end, there are *MANY* things that can be done so that things run
smoother for all. Even is they are done by the user later, we can make
it easier. Getting involved with Ubuntu Studio Controls

 Khashayar is our most recent.

I have nothing but respect for UbuntuStudio, it has been my main os
since Feisty. I try out other distros once in a while, just to learn
something new, and none of them comes close to the level of perfection
that UbuntuStudio has.

I wish I could do more to help, but theres a long way from making a
simple script to actualy develop something usefull. I know a little
Pascal, and have tried to learn things like C+, but my head hurts when I
try to wrap my brain around it, even compiling a new kernel leaves me

As I mentioned before, I don't hate Pulse, I just cant use it in its
current state, and althou it might be a quick fix, I see a

I'm curious as to why Jack won't be backported?

Because it requires backporting other libs that effect other apps. One's
that we aren't gonna be responsible for at this time. Things may change,
but for now, we won't be backporting JACK.

I used this guide from UbuntuForum :
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1018236

This will install JACK 0.116.1 *ALONG SIDE* the previous installs of
the jackd 0.109.2 and libjack0 0.109.2 packages.

Works fine for me in Hardy 32bit, don't know about 64bit thou.

Is there any way to restart jack *properly* from the
 terminal?

Isn't it something like
$ killall jackd

I normaly use htop to kill a program (apt-get install htop).

Re: alsa_in build?

Has anyone built Jack from the tar ball available for version 116 on the
 Jackaudio website?

I did with a .deb from this how-to :
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1018236

It uses /usr/local/bin instead of /usr/bin so you'll have to edit the
path to Jackd in qjackctl, but other than that it seams to be working ok :-)

/Sandie
The build seems to have completed and I have a functioning Jack.

But, the make file appears to be supposed to do a recursive build of the
directories created by the tar -xvf of the ball. But, there is no resultant
executable of the things in the tools directory. For example there is no
alsa_in or alsa_out in /usr/bin (or anywhere that I can see)

 Mac

Re: JACK keeps me frustrated

2008-11-06 Thread sandie
Hi

If you click Setup in jackctl, you can save your presets, a very nice
feature if you play around with the settings, and imho... it's a much
better option than those random restore points.

and remember... Linux is not windows ;-)

Kind regards

 Hello,

I curse JACK - such a hostile piece of software, whose error messages
provide no help, stops itself working after mere editing of options
 according to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToJACKConfiguration
(first example, I happen to have the same sound card).

The worst - I don't know how to return to previous working state other
from completely reinstall Ubuntu Studio from scratch ... If only Linux
had Restore points as WinXP does ...

Unfortunately, I'm sending this mail from Windows, which is still my
main working OS, Ubuntu Studio didn't make it from experimentation state
yet, so I can't provide contents of JAKC's Message Window.

I absolutely don't know what now, how to return JACK to its previous
working state. Can anyone help me? Many thanks in advance.

realtime?

2008-10-01 Thread sandie
Hi

I just joined this list, so please bear with me if this has been asked a
thousand times before :-)
Is there any word about a realtime kernel in Ubustu-Ipex ? and if not...
is there a beginners guide to building it yourself ?

FWIW I've tried Intrepid with the 2.2.26 rt for AMD64 for about 10
days. In one word don't. There's a laundry-list of things that cause
the system to lock up and go braindead -- many of them video and audio
driver related. But many apps appear to work on the generic kernel
(performance issues aside). And many of them appear to work in the
latest (Intrepid alpha 6) versions using the 2.2.19 rt kernel that is
 available for Hardy.

I have to agree with Cory that for now Ubuntu Studio users should
stick with Hardy because the 2.2.26 rt kernel is not ready to go as
part of Intrepid, let alone as part of Ubuntu Studio Intrepid. That
may change in the next 30 days, but I suggest letting Cory et al pull
their hair out and swear at their computers dealing with the problems
 of 2.2.26 rt. YMMV.

A non-rt kernel is realy not an option for me, I can't run any of my
apps :-( at least not with the preformance I'm used to.

I managed to install the rt-kernel (32bit) from the repros, a 173 Nvidia
driver (the 177 didnt work for me), Wine and Wineasio, and have been
trying to crash the system for an hour now, without any luck :-)
I use EnergyXT2 with (win)vsti's for drums, bass and keyboards, and then
record guitar, vocals and other analog thingies.

But lets say (for the sake of the argument) that I don't know anything
about kernels ;-)
Will I still be using all the new stuff in 8.10, xorg, qt ?
And will the kernel be updated automaticly when the new one arrive ?

Kind regards
Sandie
