matter of having my name on the list so I can pop along if I can -
please put me down :-)

Brighton Happy Hour - someone suggested Brighton and the date which is a
great idea, but I don't recall who it was, or what pub was specified,
Someone pick a pub in Brighton and lets make this happen! Please can people
in the area reply with pub suggestions and a general agreement on the date.

This was me! I'll put some thought into a pub, however unfortunately I
may no longer actually be in Brighton due to a change in personal

Hopefully I can just make the journey down anyway if I am no longer

Does anyone have any specific requests for pubs? I presume walking
distance from station, big enough to accommodate a reasonable crowd
etc.

 something just for fun.

The meetings are to discuss plans and things that we can do to promote
Ubuntu in the UK, with a fairly broad interpretation of what that
might include. If anyone wants to raise any particular topic or has a
suggested activity or meetup that we should plan then please do come
along to the meeting and optionally jot down some notes on the agenda
about what you want to discuss:

Damn, I can't make the 4th of August!

One other thing I would very much like to restart is the happy hour
pub meetups http://ubuntu-uk.org/happy-hour/ . If someone would like
to volunteer to be in a particular pub at a certain date and time
(this has been Thursday evenings so far, but other suggestions are
fine) for a meetup in your area that would be great.

I'll happily suggest one but it will be in London so it won't be very
original. Then again, if there is interest, I'd be tempted to suggest
something in the Richmond / Kew / Chiswick area to make it look like
it's slightly outside of the Big Smoke.

[Bug 963514] [NEW] Lots of graphics glitches when using dash (and other components)

2012-03-23 Thread Simon Watson
Public bug reported:

I upgraded in the last day or so, and a previously solid Ubuntu 12.04
install, has gone down hill fast.

If I am using an application (for example chrome as I write this)
everything is fine.

If I try and use anything involving unity (the dash, the global menu,
the app switcher) I get lots of flickering. With dash, you can see
chunks of the application underneath flickering, and as best I can tell,
this is the same for the launcher and the global menu.

I'm not really sure where to start in terms of debug for this. Except to
say I am using a Samsung NC10 which has the following graphics

Here's a few things I'd consider showing them.

 * Dash/Launcher - showing how I search for and start apps, and how I
 switch between applications and files
 * Default apps - show that it comes with office, IM, graphics, CD/DVD
 burner, email etc pre-installed
 * Software centre - how I can find apps, read reviews and install new

What about you? What would you show and tell?

 Cheers,

I'd think I'd just show them how easy it is to get stuff done on it :-)
I'm not convinced I'd show them things like IM/CD burner, more likely to
show them that facebook works smoothly in Firefox/Chrome!

I don't think I'd show them the Software Centre, chiefly because on my
netbook it runs like an absolute dog, and wouldn't be a good advert to them.

Hi there This is probably a stupid question. I've been using
Precise 12.04 ever since the beginning of Alpha 1. I installed it for
testing, but found it so stable I have been using it on a day to day
basis ever since. I have taken the updates on a daily basis, watched it
as it changed, and filed bug reports as needed.

My question: is what I am now using exactly the same as if I took the
Alpha 2 release and updated this? And when we get to April release
date, will I then have an installation exactly the same as the newly
released Precise Pangolin, or ought I to re-install? Clearly, I don't
yet understand how the alpha/beta/release process works.

Kind regards,Barry.

[ubuntu-uk] A talk on Ubuntu/Opensource

2012-01-15 Thread Simon Watson
Hi all,

Is anyone interested/willing/able to present a lecture on Ubuntu,
developments in open source, that sort of thing? The talk would
normally be about 45 minutes long, on an evening, and would most
likely be in either Crawley (near Gatwick Airport) or Brighton. The
audience would be engineers, though I may also try and get in touch
with BCS members as well for the widest possible audience.

This would be arranged as part of the IET Sussex
(http://www.theiet.org/local/uk/southeast/sussex/,
http://www.facebook.com/ietsussex) program of lectures.

If anyone is interested, or can put me in touch with people who might
be, please contact me either on or offlist as appropriate.

Many thanks!

Now we're perilously close to releasing 11.10 onto the world, it's
been asked [0] what things the developers would like to see the focus
on for the 12.04 (Long Term Support) release.

Personally I would like all core applications to support proxy servers
properly. Especially as it's an LTS release which is arguably
well-suited to corporate users who are those most often behind proxy
servers. (ubuntu one file sync being something that doesn't work
behind proxies)

I wondered what you lot might desire for 12.04?

To be fair, you'd kind of hope that would be the aim of a LTS release.
Otherwise you just risk losing reputation.

Yes but it's massive and it does a real ale festival every year, it's
just a matter of timing it right.
For the rest of it, I mostly agree with your comments.

Sounds good to me. It's 2 days after my birthday, too, so I will have
 reason to celebrate. ;¬)

Sounds like a plan. I'm happy to help organise. Who else?

Hi all,

I just wanted to say thank you to Alan for organising the first Ubuntu
UK Happy Hour on Thursday. I'm sure everybody who was there will agree
that a good time was had by all! And it did last a wee bit more than an
hour.

So I'll raise my glass to a successful new Ubuntu UK venture!

Cheers,

Bruno

Can I suggest rotating them around different parts of london, so that it's
easier for people from outside London to join?

So, one meet somewhere near kings cross/victoria/paddington/euston etc. That
way more people can attend from outside London.

Cheers,

Simon

I heartily agree! Good accessible location (for Londoners at least) and nice

 Definitely agree!

I was wondering if there would be any interest in a monthly London
meet for FOSS folk. I go to 3 monthly London science-fiction meets,
one that's been running since 1946, and 2 monthly sceptical meets, one
that's 11 or 12 years old now, so there are a few such functions that
 are already working well...

I'm sure that would work. Monthly is definitely manageable as it's just a
case of finding a suitable pub 12 times a year. I've been helping to run a
group that does weekly meets around London in a similar setting so I can
fish out a list of likely watering holes. Thursdays are good to do such a
thing as it's close to the weekend while not being the weekend quite yet.

Now in terms of practicality, here are a few things we could do to make it
 easier:

 vary the location so that a majority of people can make it at some point;
make sure that for each meet, at least 2 people commit to be there from the
start (say 7pm): there's nothing worse than being on your own in a pub
wondering whether you're too early and nobody's arrived yet or you're too
 late and everybody's gone home already;
mention the 2 people above on the meet's details, possibly with a link to
their wiki pages so that people have an idea what they look like (assuming
 they've got a photograph).

So if anybody's interested, I'm happy to organise the next London one either
 end of October or November.

Sounds like a plan is forming!

I'd suggest /not/ the First Thursday, as that's the Tun AKA the London
Circle, the one that's been running since 1946. (If you read Arthur C
Clarke's /Tales of the White Hart/ you get a pretty good clue as to
what one of the early pubs was called...)

(There's also a techie meet in the City which I sometimes go to on the
First Thursday, but which is Top Secret so I will say no more. Those
who know, know.)

October will see the Ubuntu Oneiric release party, at Cask again, so
that is sort of already covered.

But from November?

I'd suggest someone brings along a large, conspicuous Tux penguin as a
recognition symbol: you're after the bunch of people with a large
penguin on their table! :¬) )

As for where, well, it depends how big it grows, but Cask is pretty
good. Free wifi, too.

Others I like with decent beer and a fair amount of room:

The Craft Beer Company, Leather Lane (same owners as Cask)
The Penderel's Oak, Holborn (former Skeptics in the Pub London
Perlmongers venue)
Upstairs at The Old King's Head, London Bridge (former Skeptics in the
Pub venue)
The Cittie of Yorke, Holborn

But I reckon picking one and sticking to it until it gets known is not
a bad idea to start with.

I should have mentioned, it would be fantastic if someone wants to
organise a release party in one of our other fine cities either on the
release day or perhaps a few weeks later when we might have CDs to
distribute.

Just to confirm I've also noticed this problem... I'm running the latest

Out of the port on the laptop however, the sound is fine!
