[Bug 523319] Re: CPU runs at 85% constantly with no programs running

2010-02-17 Thread Susan Cragin
It's syslog that's hogging all the CPU. See the attached screenshot showing the
top command.
I checked out the other bugs and decided to upgrade from the linux-rt kernel to
the generic kernel, thinking that might solve my problem.
Sadly, that produced a massive slowdown of the system. I guess the kernel has
to be in place before syslog is upgraded. Anyway, corruption followed and I had
to re-install my system from scratch.
I have (for the present) uninstalled the syslog program (and ubuntu-minimal).
I'll probably try re-installing them after I get a kernel update.

[Bug 518811] Re: Enter Key crashes Ubuntu 10.04 latest update

2010-02-12 Thread Susan Cragin
as of today with all updates (12 Feb) enter key does not work at all in
any situation. even the login. i have usa keyboard and dvorak activated.
i also switched back and forth between gnome and fluxbox, but that
shouldn't have done anything. i installed fluxbox yesterday and booted
in and out of it and gnome several times. but this morning after updates
i couldn't get into anything. everything freezes, every time i press the
return key.

[Bug 518811] Re: Enter Key crashes Ubuntu 10.04 latest update

2010-02-12 Thread Susan Cragin
However, when I re-booted, the problem came back. And what worked once does NOT
work twice.
I went to preferences / keyboard and the keyboard was already on asus-laptop.
So I changed it to PC-105 and back to asus-laptop. That seemed to work, at
least temporarily, until I log in again.

[Bug 488048] Re: keyboard layout needs to be reset after each login

2010-02-12 Thread Susan Cragin
The problem is bigger than this because I need asus-laptop and ability
to switch between QUERTY and DVORAK. The first time I changed keyboard
from USA-105 to ASUS-laptop, it worked. Until I re-booted. Now it
doesn't work any more. The keyboard is stuck at whatever it was before,
but system/preferences/keyboard still shows ASUS-laptop.

[Bug 518811] Re: Enter Key crashes Ubuntu 10.04 latest update

2010-02-12 Thread Susan Cragin
Well, that's not a solution. I expect my keyboard to function every time
I boot up, and not just when I boot up without using the enter key, then
log out, then log back in. In addition, when I log in, my keyboard
preferences do not stay. My layouts section shows just Dvorak (which
is what I installed with) and keeps dumping my alternate layout, which
is USA. My Keyboard Model says Asus-Laptop, but it's not. It's back to
Generic-105, or whatever the layout is that doesn't recognize my Enter
key. I'd put in paragraph headings to make this clearer, but I can't.

[Bug 513857] Re: fbreader add file to library button does not work

2010-01-28 Thread Susan Cragin
This is apparently not a bug but a limitation of the program. The add
file to library button does not work until you have set other settings.
The problem is only that the pop-up information box that should tell you
that is blank, and you have to figure it out for yourself.

The library option itself has flaws. For instance, I set it to
/home/myname/ebooks and it sent me to /home/myname and I had to set it
from there. And there should be an option to load more than one book at
a time into the library. I have 50+ books, and loading them one at a
time is inconvenient.

[Bug 407970] Re: Wine, Pulseaudio and no more sound in 2.6.31 - regression?

2010-01-24 Thread Susan Cragin
George,
This is probably a useless comment, but if you have a creative soundblaster
X-fi card and possibly some of the other Creative cards the sound just goes
away after a while whether you are using pulseaudio or not. I have that
problem. I open NaturallySpeaking running in wine, close the program, re-open
it, and voila! no sound.
And I have disabled pulseaudio in my startup applications.

[Bug 424927] Re: include Brain fuck Scheduler

2010-01-24 Thread Susan Cragin
Well, now I'm not sure what the problem is.
Lucid has done upgrades to nvidia and to dkms, so I thought I would try
compiling and running the kernel again. I accepted all default options.
Everything seemed to go well, and the kernel is very fast.
Then, very much later, after several re-boots, I tried to install another, very
simple program called rednotebook, and it gave kernel-related errors. I have
attached the log.

[Bug 410813] Re: Cannot draw in xournal since 0.4.2.1-1ubuntu1

2010-01-18 Thread Susan Cragin
I would probably agree.
To be considered fixed:
At a minimum, this option should be turned off by default, since first-time
users will not want it, and it makes the program not work at startup with
standard hardware.
At a maximum, Xinput does not work. I don't think anyone using Xournal and
subscribing to this bug has tested it, using a device that needs it. We're just
using it with a standard configuration and a mouse.
???The Xinput standards were changed at about the time Xournal stopped working.
http://www.x.org/wiki/XInputSpec
I'm not sure what kind of device uses Xinput. If the Wacom tablet uses it I may
be able to test it, but I suspect it does not.

[Bug 424927] Re: include Brain fuck Scheduler

2010-01-16 Thread Susan Cragin
Daniel --
I think it is an Invidia problem, whether with dkms or not. And here's why.
I was using Lucid (NOT Karmic) in the compile above.
Ubuntu-Studio Lucid doesn't install or run any more for me; with some sort of
nvidia error in the installation process. I have filed a bug against
debian-installer. I am told that the error is known and is being worked on.

[Bug 502142] Re: my keyboard deconfigure every time i reboot my system

2010-01-12 Thread Susan Cragin
Here's what happens to me. It's very similar but not identical.
My primary keyboard layout is the Dvorak. I used that even to install the
system.
Sometimes my husband needs to use the computer in the morning, so in system /
preferences / keyboard I set the default to USA, and close down the computer.
In the morning, my husband boots up. The keyboard preferences are still set to
USA, but the actual keyboard is Dvorak. In other words, the identities have
changed. Dvorak is now USA, and USA is now Dvorak.
But not entirely.
When I get up, I open hnb, a terminal program.
When I press the keys, the letters come out Dvorak even though the preferences
are still set to USA. But then I press CTL-S to sort, and the keys register as
USA!
The only way to straighten everything out is to re-boot with everything set to
the installation keyboard, which is Dvorak.

So basically, when the computer boots, it goes toward the installation
keyboard, and disregards the changes in preferences / keyboard. Except
for the CTL keys (and maybe ALT -- I haven't checked that.)

[Bug 398468] Re: echo indigo iox soundcard not recognized

2009-12-31 Thread Susan Cragin
You are correct. I also have a Creative X-Fi soundcard that goes in the same
slot.
Because I use wine, I disable pulseaudio by killall pulseaudio when I start
each session.
Because wine / Dragon NaturallySpeaking needs to use the default sound card, I
have set the default soundcard using asoundconf.
However, wine by itself does not need to use the default sound card. All
sound cards should display correctly in winecfg, and the Indigo does not. It
can't find the mixer.

FYI - I used to use the onboard sound card, but the metal ring surrounding my
input jack broke off, taking some of the plastic with it. So I have to rely on
either the PCcard slot or USB. (USB produces not-as-good sound.)
I can use the Creative X-fi card without much of a problem, but have been told
that the Echo has superior quality.

I just started up Audacity, and set the Indigo IOx on incoming and
outgoing. Then I tried to record. It gave me no error messages, but no
sound was recorded.

When I run echomixer there is likewise no incoming sound.
FWIW -- When I run winecfg, wine recognizes incoming sound but no mixer.
I will run the apport-collect command.

[Bug 499991] Re: Karmic Sound Too LOW !!!!

2009-12-26 Thread Susan Cragin
I'd just like to say that my sound is very low, too. Not too low to hear, but
just about half the volume I got with Windows. My bug has been around for a
while, and I have upgraded to Lucid (Studio), where the problem persists. I
have never reported it before, just because I considered it a small item
compared with not getting sound at all.
This bug is present whether or not I use pulseaudio.
I log on with pulseaudio and go to, e.g. YouTube, and the volume is low. I kill
pulseaudio and the volume is the same.

[Bug 180044] Re: notebook-gtk2 appears to do nothing

2009-12-05 Thread Susan Cragin
Poor GTK-notebook! It doesn't work at all and its only bug was marked for
expiration 165 days ago.
The package (which is actually notebook-gtk2) delivers up what looks like a
very lightweight and useful program, but none of its functions work.
Since this program is obviously not being maintained, perhaps the best thing to
do would be to remove it from the repository. I would use it if it were
available, but it doesn't look like it's going to be.

[Bug 463829] Re: No sound on Creative Labs [SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio] CA0110-IBG

2009-12-05 Thread Susan Cragin
I wish to modify my above comment, because it gives an incorrect impression.
The only application I get sound in is Dragon NaturallySpeaking run without
pulseaudio and with alsa enabled. None of my other sound applications work at
all, and it is very difficult to get NatSpeak to run, as outlined above. I have
to snap the card in and out, and then adjust the sound settings in alsamixer,
and then it usually runs.

Re: Ubuntu-Studio-users Digest, Vol 32, Issue 1

2009-12-03 Thread Susan Cragin
Brian King kirjoitti:

ubuntu's efforts to get rt kernel working in realtime mode just isn't
there yet :-( ubuntu just hasn't got the right mix for maximum
desktop performance and rt yet :-(

Well, RT-kernel works me... maybe it is just me ;-)

RT works for me much better, much faster, than generic kernel, and I even run
one sound app through wine.
If Mr. King wants to test another kernel, maybe he should try bfsbfq, which is
crazy-fast but runs best on a lightly-configured desktop (best with only one
app running at a time) and has peculiar bottlenecks. (Backup first.)
Actually, to the extent there is a difference between real-time and just fast,
bfsbfq is just fast. It gallops in some places, seems to trot in others. My
opinion? bfsbfq will be great a year from now to run just one sound application
at a time on a low-powered machine. Probably best with Lubuntu, if that ever
gets started.

[Bug 462843] Re: Creative X-Fi card stops suddenly, hard to re-start

2009-11-20 Thread Susan Cragin
There have been some changes and I would like to update this bug.
Changes now allow me to get the card running without re-booting the machine.

Status:
When I boot up, my Creative X-fi card has about a 50% chance of being running.
This is even though both of the card's lights are lit up, and asoundconf list
shows the card properly.
If it is running, and I open and then close a sound application, the card
almost inevitably stops working.

Change:
To get the card running again, I now can remove the card, re-insert it, and
then modprobe for snd-hda-codec and snd-hda-codec-ca0110.
I no longer have to re-boot.
But I must do this almost every time I boot up, and every single time I stop
and then re-start a sound application.

This is a very annoying bug because basically there are only two good
soundcards that use the expresscard slot, this one and the indigoiox,
and the indigoiox is not recognized at all under Ubuntu. (I have filed a
bug for that elsewhere.)

I have one question: After
installing Ubuntu Studio why there is no aplication such gimp,
inkscape etc, did I miss install component? Please, reply recommended
step by step how to install Ubuntu Studio. Thank you :)

Ubuntu Studio is optimized for sound. It contains standard packages for that.
Gimp and other graphics packages can be installed via

System / Administration / Add-Remove applications

Or if you use synaptic:
in terminal

sudo synaptic

or in terminal just type

sudo apt-get install gimp

[Bug 462843] Re: Creative X-Fi card stops suddenly, hard to re-start

2009-11-13 Thread Susan Cragin
This is still a problem.
I open my application. Sound works. I close my application and re-open it.
Sound inevitably does not work.

To get sound going again, I have to remove the card, so that the system
recognizes that it is gone, put the card back in (which of course the
machine does not recognize) and then re-boot.

This is a regression. It used not to do this, just a couple of weeks
ago.

[Bug 462843] Re: Creative X-Fi card stops suddenly, hard to re-start

2009-11-13 Thread Susan Cragin
I'm not sure. Here's everything I do, and know.
After my card stops working, I try the following.

asoundconf list -- the card shows up correctly as Generic
alsamixer -- the card is set as the default, and alsamixer comes up correctly,
and shows that my sound settings have not changed and are not set to mute.
alsamixer -c1 -- same settings as above

sudo modprobe snd-hda-codec
sudo modprobe snd-hda-codec-ca0110

Modules load (or re-load) without a problem.
But there is still no sound.

It makes no sense. When the sound application is turned off, it turns
off not only the sound but the cardbus??? Is that absurd.

No. I am 100% pure Ubuntu Studio, with all Karmic upgrades until yesterday. I

I haven't added anything from any non-Ubuntu repository, except that I compile

Yesterday I upgraded to Lucid, in hopes that a solution had been developed.
The only thing that I do differently from some people is that I don't use

[Bug 474670] [NEW] Startup Applications Preferences unchecking login sound disables alsa

2009-11-04 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

I tried to uncheck all startup programs that I don't need, but one thing I
uncheck disables alsa.

[Bug 63352] Re: Creative labs X-Fi sound card unsupported

2009-11-03 Thread Susan Cragin
I have the same card. It worked pretty well for a while but it has developed a
bug. Sound just stops working at odd times. There may have been a regression.
Rob... try the following
modprobe snd-hda-codec
modprobe snd-hda-codec-ca0110
lsmod
Are your modules there? You may need snh-hda-intel too.
Remove the card.
Shut down the computer.
Put the card back in.
Turn on the computer.
Remember, these type of cards (for the moment) are not recognized by the system
when they are plugged in. They have to be present on boot.
So, when mine stops working, I have to tell the machine that the card's been
removed, and then turn it off, put the card in, then turn it back on.

Re: audio

2009-10-30 Thread Susan Cragin
Could be a pulseaudio problem. Try this:In terminal:sudo nano /etc/pulse/client.confUncomment the following line and change to "no"; autospawn = yesautospawn = norebootThen, before you start anything else, in terminal type killall pulseaudioThen see if that works. If it does, you can't run pulseaudio with wine and your application. If you get sound but it's faint, check alsamixer settings. -Original Message-

[Bug 464839] [NEW] firefox freezes, usually crashes, doesn't restart properly, with flash content

2009-10-30 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

This could possibly be a duplicate of bug 462606 or 440110. I am filing this in
part because 440110 requests crash information, and this is it.
My firefox crashes quite a lot, usually during or after accessing a site with
flash content. It also freezes. Sometimes I bring it back up and it is still
frozen.
Sometimes I appear to close out of it but when I try to open it again it says
the program is still running. ALT-Tab shows it is not, but System Monitor shows
the system process in its list.
So I have to either kill it in terminal or use the System Monitor.

Re: Re: [LAU] Ubuntu and Linux Open Source mentioned on BBC - this is getting big

2009-10-28 Thread Susan Cragin
Wine has its advocates, and I'm one of them. It's good if you want to run ONE BIG application, and run it fast, and you know the limitations of wine. I run Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I've given speed and accuracy demonstrations to Dragon's developers, and they said "Wow." The program doesn't run perfectly, and it crashes occasionally, but while it's running it's great. Most wino-philes just run World of Warcraft. I understand the allure of running WOW on wine. But I'd never use it to run something where all features have to work and speed doesn't count. -Original Message-
I never use Wine - if you really need Windows software run it in VitualBox running windows.

[Bug 462843] [NEW] Creative X-Fi card stops suddenly, hard to re-start

2009-10-28 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

I have a Creative X-Fi expresscard.
Sound goes along all right for a while and then suddenly stops. I can sometimes
get it re-started by pushing the card in and out, and then re-booting the
computer (or just re-booting) but sometimes not.
At the same time, alsamixer shows the card properly, and my application
registers that the card is there. But there's no sound.

This is for incoming (recorded) sound. I haven't checked the outgoing
sound.

[Bug 400820] Re: gnome-volume-control-applet takes up to 40% cpu

2009-10-25 Thread Susan Cragin
I have moved to that comment, too. People tend to think of wine as running
stupid and optional games, but it's the only way for disabled people to get
speech recognition on Linux, and I refuse to give it up.
And by the way, when alsa/wine runs speech rec, it runs it very well. The speed
is great, the recognition is great, for text entry.

Another thing, pulseaudio will always be a handicap to those who use
speech rec, because of latency issues and the layer of overlap, speech
rec will never run with pulse as well as it does with alsa alone. Speech
rec is a much more complex program than any single music app, or Skype.
Those of us who need it willingly make sacrifices to use it.

[Bug 366352] Re: kernel-rt freeze after new install jaunty studio

2009-10-22 Thread Susan Cragin
My system has worked pretty well. Occasionally it seems to churn a little CPU
for no good reason, and with no apps seeming to take a lot of power, but
overall it's performing.
I have a dual-core Intel t7...@2.4.
I have also re-installed my system several times, most recently with the 10/18
daily build.
So Beta Karmic Studio 9.10 with 2.6.31-9-rt, as above, works for me.
I have not tried nosmp acpi=off
I have not installed the proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver.

[Bug 454024] Re: sound fails on re-boot when running without pulseaudio

2009-10-19 Thread Susan Cragin
This morning I booted up, installed updates, and loaded wine and NatSpeak,
forgetting to kill pulse.
And NatSpeak sound input appeared to work!
The sound was just so faint it was useless.
This, as far as I am aware, is a first.

Tried killing pulse and re-starting NatSpeak. Sound appeared to be
working. Wave-in shows dsnoop:Generic, and Generic is my sound card. (My
sound card is actually Card #1.)

Things are looking up, but I would like to leave this bug open for a few
days, because of the audio changes.

[Bug 454024] Re: sound fails on re-boot when running without pulseaudio

2009-10-18 Thread Susan Cragin
I would like to add that i re-installed Ubuntu Studio with a daily build disk
with today's date on it.
Several options and behaviors that had been common to me have changed,
indicating that alsa and pulse are being worked on.

I kill pulseaudio to use wine.
After that, I call up the sound system in my program.
When I installed, my program showed a default mixer and it worked.
After I re-booted, my program showed a dsnoop:0 mixer and it did not work.

A couple of weeks ago, the mixer showed up as dsnoop:0 and it worked
all the time.

I am confused.

[Bug 454024] Re: sound fails on re-boot when running without pulseaudio

2009-10-17 Thread Susan Cragin
I have a fresh Ubuntu-Studio install.
I installed wine (from git) and my program (Dragon NaturallySpeaking) and ran
it. Everything worked fine.
I re-booted, and my sound vanished.
I re-installed everything. Everything worked fine.
Re-booted.
Sound vanished.

Perhaps this is a wine bug? I didn't think so because I ran the same git
yesterday without this problem. If it is a wine bug, this bug is invalid
for Ubuntu because I did not have Ubuntu's version.

Anecdotally, I have had trouble getting sound to work without of pulseaudio on
other applications, and that's partly why I thought it wasn't wine's fault. For
instance, when I start Sound Recorder, it gives me Your audio capture settings
are invalid. Please correct them with the Sound Preferences under the System
Preferences menu.
When I go to that menu, it says Waiting for sound system to respond.
Is the sound system just pulseaudio? (Which I disable on boot?)
I would love to be able to use Sound Recorder with pulseaudio disabled.

[Bug 424927] Re: [needs-packaging] include Brain fuck Scheduler

2009-10-15 Thread Susan Cragin
Will there be a version of bfs-bfq in the repository? If there is one now, I
can't find it.
I tested the bfs scheduler.
My impressions.
VERY fast boot-up.
VERY slow bringing up Dragon NaturallySpeaking running under wine.
Good performance of DNS once it comes up. Right now I run linux-rt and Studio
because DNS is very sensitive to latency. My impression was that DNS ran as
well but not better.
(I'm a one-trick pony.)

Breaking systems are my favorite kind. I'll be on Lucid the day after the repos
open.
If you do one for pae I may be able to test that, too.

[Bug 450471] [NEW] timer-applet depends gnome-audio but gnome-audio requires removal of ubuntustudio defaults

2009-10-13 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: timer-applet

I have always used ubuntu studio and have always installed timer-applet, until
today.
Today I re-installed and suddenly timer-applet depends on gnome-sounds, which
conflicts with several other packages.

ubuntustudio - look
 - default settings
 - sound

I realize timer-applet is not part of the default panel applications,
but it is a popular app. I have been willing always to download it
separately but now it appears I cannot download it at all.

 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 445005] [NEW] gnome desktop mishandles text information in desktop TXT files

2009-10-06 Thread Susan Cragin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

A very small bug...
I keep a bunch of TXT files on the desktop. Naturally, this creates icons for
those files. Well, normally, the Ubuntu desktop displays a portion of the text
inside each icon box.
It stopped doing that, just about an hour ago.
In addition, random samples of text from those same TXT files show up elsewhere
on the desktop.
Very odd.
In addition, the command Take Screenshot has stopped working, so I can't show
you what happens.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
