[Bug 523319] Re: CPU runs at 85% constantly with no programs running
It's syslog that's hogging all the CPU. See the attached screenshot showing the top command. I checked out the other bugs and decided to upgrade from the linux-rt kernel to the generic kernel, thinking that might solve my problem. Sadly, that produced a massive slowdown of the system. I guess the kernel has to be in place before syslog is upgraded. Anyway, corruption followed and I had to re-install my system from scratch. I have (for the present) uninstalled the syslog program (and ubuntu-minimal). I'll probably try re-installing them after I get a kernel update. ** Attachment added: screenshot of syslog top http://launchpadlibrarian.net/39342720/Screenshot.png -- CPU runs at 85% constantly with no programs running https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/523319 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 518811] Re: Enter Key crashes Ubuntu 10.04 latest update
Well, that's not a solution. I expect my keyboard to function every time I boot up, and not just when I boot up without using the enter key, then log out, then log back in. In addition, when I log in, my keyboard preferences do not stay. My layouts section shows just Dvorak (which is what I installed with) and keeps dumping my alternate layout, which is USA. [Bug 513857] Re: fbreader add file to library button does not work
This is apparently not a bug but a limitation of the program. The add file to library button does not work until you have set other settings. The problem is only that the pop-up information box that should tell you that is blank, and you have to figure it out for yourself. The library option itself has flaws. For instance, I set it to /home/myname/ebooks and it sent me to /home/myname and I had to set it from there. And there should be an option to load more than one book at a time into the library. I have 50+ books, and loading them one at a time is inconvenient. -- fbreader add file to library button does not work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/513857 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Well, now I'm not sure what the problem is. Lucid has done upgrades to nvidia and to dkms, so I thought I would try compiling and running the kernel again. I accepted all default options. Then, very much later, after several re-boots, I tried to install another, very simple program called rednotebook, and it gave kernel-related errors. [Bug 410813] Re: Cannot draw in xournal since 0.4.2.1-1ubuntu1
I would probably agree. To be considered fixed: At a minimum, this option should be turned off by default, since first-time users will not want it, and it makes the program not work at startup with standard hardware. At a maximum, Xinput does not work. I don't think anyone using Xournal and subscribing to this bug has tested it, using a device that needs it. [Bug 502142] Re: my keyboard deconfigure every time i reboot my system
Here's what happens to me. It's very similar but not identical. My primary keyboard layout is the Dvorak. I used that even to install the system. Sometimes my husband needs to use the computer in the morning, so in system / preferences / keyboard I set the default to USA, and close down the computer. In the morning, my husband boots up. The keyboard preferences are still set to USA, but the actual keyboard is Dvorak. In other words, the identities have changed. Dvorak is now USA, and USA is now Dvorak. But not entirely. When I get up, I open hnb, a terminal program. When I press the keys, the letters come out Dvorak even though the preferences are still set to USA. But then I press CTL-S to sort, and the keys register as USA! The only way to straighten everything out is to re-boot with everything set to the installation keyboard, which is Dvorak. So basically, when the computer boots, it goes toward the installation keyboard, and disregards the changes in preferences / keyboard. [Bug 398468] Re: echo indigo iox soundcard not recognized
You are correct. I also have a Creative X-Fi soundcard that goes in the same slot. Because I use wine, I disable pulseaudio by killall pulseaudio when I start each session. Because wine / Dragon NaturallySpeaking needs to use the default sound card, I have set the default soundcard using asoundconf. However, wine by itself does not need to use the default sound card. All sound cards should display correctly in winecfg, and the Indigo does not. It can't find the mixer. FYI - I used to use the onboard sound card, but the metal ring surrounding my input jack broke off, taking some of the plastic with it. So I have to rely on either the PCcard slot or USB. (USB produces not-as-good sound.) I can use the Creative X-fi card without much of a problem, but have been told that the Echo has superior quality. Re: Ubuntu-Studio-users Digest, Vol 32, Issue 1
Brian King kirjoitti: ubuntu's efforts to get rt kernel working in realtime mode just isn't there yet :-( ubuntu just hasn't got the right mix for maximum desktop performance and rt yet :-( Well, RT-kernel works me... maybe it is just me ;-) RT works for me much better, much faster, than generic kernel, and I even run one sound app through wine. If Mr. King wants to test another kernel, maybe he should try bfsbfq, which is crazy-fast but runs best on a lightly-configured desktop (best with only one app running at a time) and has peculiar bottlenecks. (Backup first.) Actually, to the extent there is a difference between real-time and just fast, bfsbfq is just fast. It gallops in some places, seems to trot in others. My opinion? bfsbfq will be great a year from now to run just one sound application at a time on a low-powered machine. Probably best with Lubuntu, if that ever gets started. [Bug 462843] Re: Creative X-Fi card stops suddenly, hard to re-start
There have been some changes and I would like to update this bug. Changes now allow me to get the card running without re-booting the machine. Status: When I boot up, my Creative X-fi card has about a 50% chance of being running. This is even though both of the card's lights are lit up, and asoundconf list shows the card properly. If it is running, and I open and then close a sound application, the card almost inevitably stops working. Change: To get the card running again, I now can remove the card, re-insert it, and then modprobe for snd-hda-codec and snd-hda-codec-ca0110. I no longer have to re-boot. But I must do this almost every time I boot up, and every single time I stop and then re-start a sound application. This is a very annoying bug because basically there are only two good soundcards that use the expresscard slot, this one and the indigoiox, and the indigoiox is not recognized at all under Ubuntu. (I have filed a bug for that elsewhere.) -- Creative X-Fi card stops suddenly, hard to re-start https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462843 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 462843] Re: Creative X-Fi card stops suddenly, hard to re-start
This is still a problem. I open my application. Sound works. I close my application and re-open it. Sound inevitably does not work. I've given speed and accuracy demonstrations to Dragon's developers, and they said "Wow." The program doesn't run perfectly, and it crashes occasionally, but while it's running it's great. Most wino-philes just run World of Warcraft. I understand the allure of running WOW on wine. [Bug 400820] Re: gnome-volume-control-applet takes up to 40% cpu
I have moved to that comment, too. People tend to think of wine as running stupid and optional games, but it's the only way for disabled people to get speech recognition on Linux, and I refuse to give it up. And by the way, when alsa/wine runs speech rec, it runs it very well. The speed is great, the recognition is great, for text entry. Another thing, pulseaudio will always be a handicap to those who use speech rec, because of latency issues and the layer of overlap, speech rec will never run with pulse as well as it does with alsa alone. Speech rec is a much more complex program than any single music app, or Skype. I have a dual-core Intel t7...@2.4. I have also re-installed my system several times, most recently with the 10/18 daily build. So Beta Karmic Studio 9.10 with 2.6.31-9-rt, as above, works for me. I have not tried nosmp acpi=off I have not installed the proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver. -- kernel-rt freeze after new install jaunty studio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/366352 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 454024] Re: sound fails on re-boot when running without pulseaudio
This morning I booted up, installed updates, and loaded wine and NatSpeak, forgetting to kill pulse. And NatSpeak sound input appeared to work! The sound was just so faint it was useless. This, as far as I am aware, is a first. Tried killing pulse and re-starting NatSpeak. Sound appeared to be working. Wave-in shows dsnoop:Generic, and Generic is my sound card. (My sound card is actually Card #1.) Things are looking up, but I would like to leave this bug open for a few days, because of the audio changes. -- sound fails on re-boot when running without pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/454024 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 454024] Re: sound fails on re-boot when running without pulseaudio
I would like to add that i re-installed Ubuntu Studio with a daily build disk with today's date on it. Several options and behaviors that had been common to me have changed, indicating that alsa and pulse are being worked on. I kill pulseaudio to use wine. After that, I call up the sound system in my program. When I installed, my program showed a default mixer and it worked. After I re-booted, my program showed a dsnoop:0 mixer and it did not work. A couple of weeks ago, the mixer showed up as dsnoop:0 and it worked all the time. [Bug 454024] Re: sound fails on re-boot when running without pulseaudio
I have a fresh Ubuntu-Studio install. I installed wine (from git) and my program (Dragon NaturallySpeaking) and ran it. Everything worked fine. I re-booted, and my sound vanished. I re-installed everything. Everything worked fine. Re-booted. Sound vanished. Perhaps this is a wine bug? I didn't think so because I ran the same git yesterday without this problem. If it is a wine bug, this bug is invalid for Ubuntu because I did not have Ubuntu's version. Anecdotally, I have had trouble getting sound to work without of pulseaudio on other applications, and that's partly why I thought it wasn't wine's fault. For instance, when I start Sound Recorder, it gives me Your audio capture settings are invalid. Please correct them with the Sound Preferences under the System Preferences menu. When I go to that menu, it says Waiting for sound system to respond. Is the sound system just pulseaudio? (Which I disable on boot?) I would love to be able to use Sound Recorder with pulseaudio disabled. -- sound fails on re-boot when running without pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/454024 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
