[Bug 2061239] Re: After logging out and back in, X recognises a non-existent screen

2024-05-13 Thread Yotam Benshalom
I just found out that this happens only after I log out of gnome and back in
again, or if I reset the X server using control+alt+backspace.
After a full restart, the system behaves normally. gnome settings still show
the non-existent screen, but the mouse pointer cannot wander into its
"territory", and apps behave normally.

[Bug 2061239] [NEW] X recognises a non-existent screen

2024-04-13 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Public bug reported:

I have one monitor only. However, x11 recognises two screens, and places one of
them to the right of my real screen.
This causes several issues: I can "lose" my mouse pointer at the right hand
side of my real screen. Some apps start on the non-existent screen, and it is
hard or impossible (in case of some steam games) to pull them out to my real
screen.
Gnome settings shows the two screens, my real screen first and the non-existent
one second, but does not let me fiddle with the settings of the second one. It
seems that xrandr sees this screen too:

~$ xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 7680 x 2160, maximum 32767 x 32767
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

DP-3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
None-1-1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
   3840x2160 60.00 +

But trying to remove "None-1-1" yields an error:

~$ xrandr --output None-1-1 --off

Here is the content of /sys/class/drm, but I don't know what to make of
it.

I use an right-to-left environment, and maybe this is related.

[Bug 1966613] [NEW] Navigating with arrow keys broken for RTL text

2022-03-27 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Public bug reported:

RTL text renders fine, and navigating within a line with the arrow keys
works as expected. However, using the left and right arrow keys to move
to the next or previous lines is broken.

To reproduce:
1. Open gnome-text-editor and paste the following into its window:
זוהי השורה הראשונה
זוהי השורה השנייה
זוהי השורה השלישית
make sure it is aligned to the right, as it should.
2. place the caret in the middle of the 2nd line.
3. With the arrows, move the caret to the left of the line (its end).
4. Press the left arrow key one more time.
Expected results:
1. The caret moves to the right hand side of the next line.
Actual results:
1. The caret moves to the left hand side of the previous line.

The same issue exists in reverse: if you move the caret with the arrow
keys to the right of the line (its beginning) and press the right arrow
key one more time, it will move to the right hand side of the next line
instead of the left hand side of the previous line, as it should.

This make navigation in RTL files highly uncomfortable.

[Bug 1965323] [NEW] Wayland: overview hotspot is not recognised if cursor slides to it along top of screen

2022-03-17 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Public bug reported:

Using Wayland, ubuntu-gnome, nvidia-510, RTL locale (hebrew).

When sliding the cursor along the top (horizontal) edge of the screen to
the hotspot at the top right corner of the screen (where the activities
menu is found in an rtl environment), gnome-shell does not go into
overview mode (and back).

When sliding the cursor to the very same hotspot along the right

[Bug 1918014] [NEW] Switching application keyboard shortcuts not working

2021-03-06 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Public bug reported:

After last updates, Alt+Tab no lonnger moves between all open applications. It
only switches between the two last focused windows without loading the
switching overlay. Super+Tab behaves the same way.
My keyboard settings are reset to default, and they behave strangely:

1. "Alt+tab" is not there at all.
2. Switch Windows is "Super+;", Switch Applications is "Super+Tab".
3. Super+Tab works just like Alt+Tab, i.e. switches between the last two focued
windows.
4. When I try to set Switch Windows to "Alt+Tab" it complains that it is
already in use for Switch Applications, although it does not say so in the
settings
5. When I try to set "Switch Applications" to be "Alt+Tab", this shortcut still
only moves between two last focused apps.

This is what I get from gsettings:

~$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-applications
['Tab', 'Tab']

~$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-windows
@as []

So now I have no way of moving between more than 2 applications using the
keyboard.

[Bug 1909599] [NEW] LibreOffice fails to fully resume focus with alt+tab

2020-12-29 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Public bug reported:

Using updated focal, with nvidia proprietary driver, rtl (Hebrew)
interface, all gnome-shell extensions disabled.

When navigating to an open copy of LibreOffice with Alt+Tab, the
application window receives focus, but fails to reflect user input. The
carret is not shown, typed characters are not shown, clicking menus does
not show response, etc. In order to resolve this I have to use Alt+Tab
to navigate away to another app and back to LibreOffice.

To reproduce:
1. Load Firefox, then load LibreOffice Writer and open a document.
2. Use Alt+Tab to move to Firefox.
3. Click several times inside the Firefox window, highlight text, etc.
4. Use Alt+Tab to move back to Writer.
5. Type any character.

Expected result:
- The character is shown on screen.

Actual result:
- More often than not, the character is typed in Writer, but the screen is not
updated to reflect this. Using Alt+Tab again to navigate to firefox and back to
Writer resolves this. This makes working with LibreOffice quite difficult.

[Bug 1705369] Re: Ubuntu 17.10/18.04 boots to black screen when using Nvidia drivers (on a desktop with an Intel GPU)

2018-09-06 Thread Yotam Benshalom
I suffer from this issue with gtx770 nvidia card. Annoyingly, this freezes gdm3
so hard that I cannot even switch to a different tty.
The workaround above (in '/etc/gdm3/custom.conf' uncommenting
#WaylandEnable=false) works for me.

[Bug 1580249] [NEW] kchmviewer does not open files when path is non-ascii

2016-05-10 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Public bug reported:

kchmviewer does not open files when path is non-ascii.

To reproduce:
1. Open a .chm file with kchmviewer. Make sure it opens, and close kchmviewer.
2. Create a sub-folder called ניסוי ("test" in Hebrew) and copy the file into
it.
3. Try to open the file in ניסוי with kchmviewer. ְAn error message appears:
"Cannot load the chm file" and then garbled path, clearly indicating that
kchmviewer can't handle non-ascii paths.

[Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout in 13.10 and 14.04

2014-05-28 Thread Yotam Benshalom
I think that we have here a derious regression no matter what we choose
to do, because non-latin hotkeys were usable in previous versions of
Gnome. But I also think that users of apps like Eclipse and JetBrains
are programmers who rarely have to use non-latin languages, while users
of LibreOffice use these languages all the time and are more dependant
on them.

This is why I think that until a solution is found, these patches should
be used across the board. If they are problematic, maybe it makes more
sense to enable them for the PPA's only, and not in the stable version.

Do you have any clue about how to even approach this problem?

[Bug 1089804]

2013-09-13 Thread Yotam Benshalom
The problem is that this is not really a gnome bug. I can't just go to
gnome bugzilla and say that there is a problem in gnome because it does
not auto-update its cached data after I manually edit the X keyboard
layouts - this is not something a regular user would do.

I would like to find out how to rectify my current situation - a
handicapped GNOME experience, not being able to type numbers using my
keyboard layout - but I do not know whom I should ask. Do you have any
idea?

[Bug 1089804]

2013-08-24 Thread Yotam Benshalom
I also tried to replace the /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/il with the
version from git linked here and reboot. Now, when I use the gnome tool
for displaying keyboard layouts I see the numbers in place, but they do
not work. Pressing the number keys in lyx layout still does not work.

Is there a way to solve this?

[Bug 1089804]

2013-08-24 Thread Yotam Benshalom
This bug is not fixed in ubuntu 13.10, using xkb-data 2.5.1-3ubuntu2.
The file is still using the old version. This is the downstream bug
report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xkeyboard-
config/+bug/1089804

I just wanted to makesure that this version is indeed one prior to the
release of the upstream fix. If not, then something is wrong.

[Bug 1089804] Re: The Hebrew lyx layout lack 1-8 numbers

2013-08-23 Thread Yotam Benshalom
This bug is not fixed!

Now, in ubuntu 13.10, the faulty behaviour which leaked symbols from
the English layout into the Hebrew (lyx) layout when English was listed
first is no more. So now, Hebrew (lyx) has no numbers or symbols like
!@#, and it is unusable.

I do not know if the fix suggested upstream was incorporated into ubuntu
or not, but the bug is here.

See attached screenshot of the faulty keyboard layout.

The crash still occurs after deleting all the files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
and restarting.
I guess that somehow, one of the automatic system tools inserted a translated
Hebrew string somewhere and the current upgrader can't handle it.

[Bug 1155797] [NEW] Synaptic UI is broken for RTL locale

2013-03-15 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Public bug reported:

Using Synaptic with an RTL UI (Hebrew in my case) yields the following
problems:

1. Not all columns are seen. The column showing weather the package is
installed or not is invisible (see screenshot).
2. When trying to re-size columns by dragging their border with the mouse, they
move at the opposite direction. Dragging to the left actually drags the border
to the right.
3~. I am not sure if this is related, but there is one package with residual
config which is invisible in Hebrew UI. When clicking on the white space where
this mysterious package should be listed, synaptic crashes with the message:

(synaptic:24475): IBUS-WARNING **: The owner of
/home/yotam/.config/ibus/bus is not root!

[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2012-10-04 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Thank you Jeremy, it works.

Now there are only two usability issues which block me (and other non-
Latin Gnome users) from using the ppa regularly:

1. Cannot change layout in overview mode:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=643111
2. LibreOffice would not recognise shortcuts under non-Latin layouts:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55585

There is also one problem which was fixed upstream, and I hope it can be
uploaded to your ppa:

1. Cannot use Menu key as a shortcut for changing the keyboard layout:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=685286 (when this is
uploaded, I hope it also comes with UI which allows us to set this
shortcut)

[Bug 1061974] [NEW] The numbers 1 through 8 missing from Hebrew (lyx) keyboard layout

2012-10-04 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Public bug reported:

The numbers 1 through 8 missing from Hebrew (lyx) keyboard layout. This
means that this layout is no longer usable.

To reproduce:
1. Add Hebrew (lyx) keyboard layout.
2. Switch to this layout.
3. In gedit, try typing a number 12345678 from the numeric row (not the
keypad).

Expected results: the numbers should show up.

Actual results: nothing is shown.

Using the layout viewing option in the control centre, it can be seen
that the numbers are missing from this layout.

The faulty definitions are found in the file:
/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/il

[Bug 1045914] Re: Keyboard layout doesn't show in GNOME Shell session

2012-09-30 Thread Yotam Benshalom
I can confirm that the PPA brings the layout indicator back.

However, it brings a new problem. Now it is much more difficult to set a
keyboard shortcut for changing layouts.
In the Typing section of the keyboard shortcuts I am not able to set the next
engine to be a combination of shifts and/or alts (it will just not record
them), and if I choose the Menu key it is set but does not work (it is
intercapted as right-click key and is not recognised as a shortcut). This
section is willing to accept only combinations containing letters - but letters
are the very things that change when the layout changes!

The only reliable way I found to change layouts with the keyboard was to
assign one of the F# keys as a shortcut. This works no matter what is
the current keyboard layout.

[Bug 1044856] [NEW] Regression: gnome-shell notifications are broken in RTL UI

2012-09-01 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from precise, gnome-shell notifications are not displayed
properly in RTL user interface (such as Hebrew).
When they are sent, an info icon appears in the mid-bottom edge of the
screen, but the notification itself is not shown.
When accessed later from the lower left corner of the screen, a short, almost
vertical and empty bubble is shown, but the message text (and icon) is not
shown in it.

To test this:
1. Login into gnome-shell using an RTL ui (Arabic, Hebrew, Farsi, etc.).
2. Type in terminal:
notify-send This is a test message.

See attached screenshots. Note how the message cannot be read.

relevant to unity.

[Bug 952080] Re: laptop immediately resumes after sending to standby

2012-04-09 Thread Yotam Benshalom
I suffer from the same problem on a dell studio xps 1340 laptop, 64 bit.
This problem still exists with the current upstream kernel here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.4-rc2-precise/
In this upstream kerenel I had no support for my proprietary nvidia and for
bcmwl drivers, but the problem was reproducible.
Please let me know if I can supply more data.

[Bug 972723] Re: linux 3.2.0-18 - 21 kernel panic on boot, Alienware m17x

2012-04-05 Thread Yotam Benshalom
A workaround which was suggested in the thread
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11819330 fixed the issue for
me:

echo blacklist ite-cir | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ite-cir.conf
sudo depmod -a 3.2.0-22-generic
sudo update-initramfs -u -k 3.2.0-22-generic

[Bug 972723] Re: linux 3.2.0-18 - 21 kernel panic on boot, Alienware m17x

2012-04-04 Thread Yotam Benshalom
I suffer from an identical problem on dell xps studio 1340 with nvidia 9500m
card. The 3.0.0-17 kernel boots fine, but the 3.2.0-22 (and all the former 3.2
I tried) leads to kernel panic. No logs are saved, and most of the data runs on
the screen too fast to be read. It seems to be the same bug, although I cannot
be sure of that.
Another report of this problem on a different dell computer is found here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1928957

[Bug 962209] [NEW] Regression: no RTL layout in gnome-shell

2012-03-22 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Public bug reported:

The last update broke gnome shell's support for RTL directinality.
This affects everything - the panel, the sidebar and so on.
Screenshots work only on regular view, so the screenshot attached shows only
the panel problem. The activities (in Hebrew: פעילויות) should be on the
right hand side, and my name should be on the left hand side.

[Bug 371257]

2011-12-08 Thread Yotam Benshalom
A note I made on bug 42078, which is probably a dup:

The problem is that the combo boxes are not fully mirrored on rtl linux
- the box element is, but the buttons are not. I do not agree that the
fact that it appears only on linux means that it is a linux problem. In
all gtk, qt, mozilla and chromium apps the combo boxes behave as they
should in a linux rtl environment. I think LibreOffice is doing
something wrong here.

This happens to me on libreoffice 3.4.4. with Gnome Shell and mutter as well,

I still wonder who is the culprit: libreoffice, the compositor (mutter/compiz),
or the driver (nvidia)?

A workaround for this bug:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib32/nvidia-current your_program_name

This seems to fix the issues.

This means that this bug belongs in nvidia-current package,

BTW, this bug also prevents every wine game from loading.

[Bug 852021] [NEW] I should be able to define specific dictionaries within a server for use in gnome-dictionary

2011-09-16 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Public bug reported:

The default server of gnome-dictionary offers no less than ~70
dictionaries. It always brings results from all of them. This takes a
lot of time. I cannot even control the order of results, so I have to
search for a simple, useful definition in a lengthy page instead of just
having a handy dictionary.

See the attached image for a taste of the ridiculous current situation.

I need a way to tell dictionary which dictionaries to use (and, of
course, it should remember it).

[Bug 841434] Re: Libreoffice writer marks all saved documents as in need of recovery for no apparent reason

2011-09-08 Thread Yotam Benshalom
No crash reports are created. This happened at least five times today
(it s less frequent when Java is not enabled), but the only libreoffice
related crash reports in /var/crash/ are from several days ago when I
forced a shutdown.

Crashes keep happening even after I delete ~/.libreoffice.

It seems that libreoffice believes it has crashed while it was not.

Are there any more logs I can supply?

[Bug 841434] Re: Libreoffice writer corrupts documents with Java enabled

2011-09-06 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Now libreoffice started marking documents as in need of recovery even
with Java disabled. Deleting ~/.libreoffice did not help. Opening a
document, inserting a space, saving, exiting and restarting libreoffice
yields the recovery announcement. Cancelling the recovery does it have
any visible effect on the document.

** Summary changed:

- Libreoffice writer corrupts documents with Java enabled
+ Libreoffice writer marks all saved documents as in need of recovery for no
apparent reason

[Bug 841636] Re: Bad 3D performances in Oneiric compared to Natty

2011-09-05 Thread Yotam Benshalom
I also experience severe frame-rate drop in oneiric after upgrading from
natty. I use the nvidia proprietary driver.

[Bug 841434] [NEW] Libreoffice writer corrupts documents with Java enabled

2011-09-04 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Public bug reported:

Whn Java is enabled, I get frequent random ocassions of libreoffice .odt
documents which are registered as corrupted and have to be restored each
time I open writer again. I have no idea how to repair the infected
documents. I attach one of the last casualties, my PhD dissertation.
This seems to me like a very major bug.

Please let me know what extra data I can send in order to solve this.
