What you are changing is the port on which the server listens on. The
above mentioned proprietory software, are distributed by the same
companies that run the server and thus can by default set the correct
port(and other settings) in the release. They don't want people who
don't have enough knowledge to fiddle around with those settings and
when things don't work they'll lose the consumers.

On the other hand, FOSS software is written by third party volunteers.
They try to understand the vendors settings and copy them over as much
as possible. But, they don't have control over when the upstream
vendor will change the settings. So, they'd rather provide the
facility to change the ports in the settings.
That said, your conclusion is rather erroneous for pidgin. Most of the
select service these days work as soon as you provide the your
authentication details, just as in the vendor releases. Only in
certain cases do you have to provide/change the default settings.

You need to change the datadir option in /etc/mysql/my.cnf e.g. if you
want to store files in /home/user/mysql/ then

-my.cnf-
datadir=/home/user/mysql

Read http://askubuntu.com/questions/137424/moving-mysql-datadir for
further instruction on how to move already existing files.

- Install mysql on your local machine.
- Import the backup into mysql database
- Install mysql-admin(don't confuse with mysqladmin, mysql-admin is a
GUI tool to administer MySQL databases), if you aren't comfortable
handling mysql-client from CLI.

I usually prefer to have it in gzip or bzip2 format so I can run it
through zcat or bzcat. I'm not sure if there's any such tool for zip
files.
zcat eurofoo_drp2.sql.gz | mysql -u -p

Have you checked the datadir in /etc/my.cnf?
It should be datadir=/var/lib/mysql

Connect both directly. Give IP address 192.168.1.1 to first,
192.168.1.2 and gateway 192.168.1.1 to another.

ssh is a good idea. If you want to do it graphically, nautilus

understand how to get permissions correctly with postgresql but after going
through the postgresql documents and OpenERP documents again, and a little
trial and error, I was able to set it up successfully.

For domain I started with answerable since a friend is their reseller. And
I am not disappointed with their offerings at all. Even after changing to
bigrock.in they have been as good.
Hosting I took from same friend, he runs expertrio.com. I maybe plugging

And since I am a happy customer, I haven't bothered to look elsewhere
except for my VPS as they didn't have anything like what I was looking for.

Rar will add it's own overhead information. So, if the amount of data
compressed < rar overhead then the filesize will become bigger than
the original file.

Hi,
One option that is mentioned by someone is Icecast. I have experimented with
icecast in the past. There were some issues back then with what format one
can stream. e.g. you cannot stream mp3 files, you'll have to convert them to
ogg and then pass it to ices server for streaming. I believe there's no
direct way of streaming wav files either. From the documentation, it seems
that this is still true.

Icecast only streams audio.

Another solution given is VLC. I have been using VLC to stream videos from
my PC to mobile phones over wifi so that my parents can watch videos sent by
relatives, since they find it too hectic to climb stairs to enter my room.
It's a perfect, easy, GUI tool and has lot of options and supports many
formats. You can also make it work from CLI, e.g. you want to script the
usage, you can look at cvlc, console version of vlc(it should already be
installed if you have VLC installed).

VLC can stream both audio and video.

Another option is ffserver, which is a part of ffmpeg. I haven't used it
personally as yet. You can view the documentation for ffserver at
http://ffmpeg.org/ffserver.html
There is some issue going on in the ffmpeg camp where they've forked the
project to libav. Currently, the application is still called ffserver in
libav project too and has the same documentation hosted at
http://libav.org/ffserver.html. This might change in the future.
ffserver can be used in conjunction with ffmpeg to encode/re-encode media on
the fly and integrate it into web applications too.

ffserver can stream both audio and video.

I have been able to use Vodafone Mobile Connect with Ubuntu 10.10 and
Samsung Galaxy S. I had connected via USB and had to just enable USB
tethering on the phone. Nothing had to be done on the PC end. It was
connected automatically, no work needed.

Thunderbird can do 1 and 3.

Yahoo pipes can do all the three things but it's a web application.

If none of the above 2 work, you can write a script in your favourite
scripting language.

I have done the same thing that you're looking for using yahoo pipes.
And it is easy to do.

Keep the PDF where ever one wants. To make it run on the start up, add
it to System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications
Of course, one bad side-effect of this is that the app will run
everytime you start the CD. Also, I am assuming that a PDF reader will
be installed & you will call it with proper options.

That's definitely not true. The consultant may have said that because
he/she may only be comfortable with Fedora/RHEL.
If I were to personally choose a Linux distro for a server, it would
be primarily between CentOS and Debian.
Ubuntu LTS is also a good choice.

All said and done, what is more important is the competence of the
System Administrator and his/her familiarity with the underlying OS is
of utmost importance.
if the person is competent with fedora pushing Ubuntu on them may not
be such a good idea. But, you may as well opt for RHEL or CentOS as it
will still be the same as Fedora.

Not all the users have sudo access. The first user has the access but
the users created henceforth do not have the access by default. You
have to add them to the admin group.

See this:

$ id
uid=1001(guest) gid=1001(guest)
groups=4(adm),20(dialout),21(fax),24(cdrom),25(floppy),26(tape),30(dip),44(video),46(plugdev),104(fuse),121(nopasswdlogin),1001(guest)

$ groups
guest adm dialout fax cdrom floppy tape dip video plugdev fuse nopasswdlogin

$ sudo su -
[sudo] password for guest:
guest is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.

Check the output of ifconfig to see if you have got any IP address.
Output of route -n will give you the IP of the gateway. See if you can ping it.
If it's fine till here, try pinging an external IP. e.g. 8.8.8.8(google dns IP).

I used to run my desktop for almost 24/7 for a good 3-4 years. It
lasted me for 5.5 years before it finally died last week due to rain
water seeping in and frying to mobo.
But, one thing is very important, a good SMPS. And also good backup

What desktop do you use? GNOME? Would you mind trying something lighter?
I use fluxbox on my P4 2.0GHz 512MB RAM machine. I can run 2-3 apps at

Another thing I have been using to diagnose the problem is to use

[ubuntu-in] Squid, ufw and http(s) port

2010-06-15 Thread Mehul Ved
I am trying to configure a machine to be used as a gateway and would
like the client machines connecting only through squid and not
directly. Thus, I blocked all outgoing connections except port 3128.
If I do that, I cannot open any websites until I open port 80/443. I
cannot configure transparent proxy either as authentication is
required to access some websites. I checked that the browser is using
correct proxy settings. I have also checked the same with wget and get
the same results.

Simply enough all the programs which are in the /usr will not be
available anymore.
To know what type of data are usually stored in /usr have a look at
Filesystem Hierarchy Standard and then you can always peek into all
the files in the /usr directory of your system.

If you don't find any, you can always setup your own. No one will stop
you from using ubuntu then. You can take up java based projects. Of
course it's a more difficult route but you have the freedom to work on
your own terms.

Check for Acer Aspire 5536. I had checked it's price a few months
back, it was about 27K. I am not sure if it's available any more. If
it is, you should find it for about 25K.
Specifications:
http://www.newtechnology.co.in/acer-aspire-5536-pricespecifications-of-new-laptop/

I cannot comment on it's linux compatibility though as I've never
tried it. But, since other Acer models like 4736 are linux compatible
and some even come preloaded with linpus, this might be compatible
too. You can always take a live cd with you to test it out.

Why don't you update to the latest version 9.10? In the latest
version, NetworkManager will make it easy for you to connect.
See https://help.ubuntu.com/9.10/internet/C/connecting-mobile.html

Start using linux regularly and whenever you're stuck use your
favourite search engine.
Also, help.ubuntu.com and ubuntuguide.org have quite comprehensive
documentation on ubuntu. Do bookmark them and more importantly, refer

Looks fine to me. You still haven't given the output of ping. Since
the DNS is resolving, your server maybe blocking ping, check your
firewall settings.

1. Please give the diagnostic output of ping in both cases.
2. Paste the contents of /etc/resolv.conf on the clients. Is the DNS on your
server listed in this file?
3. dig and nslookup are more useful as compared to ping in this case.

I did compile ffmpeg from svn. medibuntu repositories for karmic don't
have ffmpeg
Here's what I did
svn checkout svn://svn.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg/trunk ffmpeg
cd ffmpeg
./configure --enable-nonfree --enable-gpl --enable-pthreads
--enable-libopencore-amrnb --enable-libopencore-amrwb
--enable-version3 --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libxvid
make && make install

I could not enable libx264 as ffmpeg required x264 to be greater than
0.78 compared to 0.67 and 0.65 available in the repositories. FYI, i
have svn release 20428.

Parameters are explained right below your reply.

To get a better qualilty you can look at the following:
-s vga(640x480) or svga(800x600)
-ab 128 to 320 depending on the audio bitrate of original video, the
audio quality you want for the output file and the size consideration
for the output file.
Of course, the original video should be of good quality else it won't
be of much use.
You can get much more information on the options on this page[1]

To convert mp4 to other format you can look at -vcodec[2] option to
specify the video codec and -acodec[3] to specify the audio codec.
Also look at the output of ffmpeg -formats

1. http://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-doc.html
2. http://ffmpeg.org/general.html#SEC6
3. http://ffmpeg.org/general.html#SEC7

mencoder is a great program too but I have been successfully using
ffmpeg to convert video files to 3gp. Will be blogging on this quite
soon.
Following command worked for me to convert a file to mp4
ffmpeg -i inputfile.flv -acodec copy -s 480x320 -r 30 -b 768 -ar 44100
-ab 64 -y outputfile.mp4
Remember to put -acodec copy otherwise ffmpeg uses aac which will not
give you any sound. You can play around with size(-s), frame rate(-r),
bitrate(-b), audio rate(-ar) and audio bitrate(-ab).

Have you tried using 1024x768 for the projector?

Do you mean chromium? Or have google finally release *chrome* for
linux? If latter, could you please provide the link for the same.

I can't understand why you can't read list guidelines.
"Do not post HTML messages. Set your mailing client to send text only mails."

Secondly try to understand why someone said something. So, please
check what the suggestion is with the result and then shoot off your
email. I did check the website and had annoying pop ups warning me
"This site works with MSIE 5.5 and above"
And when I click on Virtual Keypad the input box grays out.
Both the above things don't happen with javascript turned off.
If some website requires javascript to allow you to login, I'd better
be not using it. Don't know about you.

Lastly, I don't understand why some people think that everybody else
on the list beside them are dodos.

Yes. Unless you want to test anything, wait till after the final
release. And you might want to wait a couple of days after release to
get good speeds too.

Well http://www.vandomburg.net/installing-windows-xp-from-usb/
And if the OP had tried a bit he'd have found a lot of links on google
and wouldn't have had to waste his time here.
Or he could just buy an external USB DVD Drive.
