[Bug 2052961] Re: Error: OCI runtime error: crun: chmod : Operation not supported

2024-04-12 Thread Andre Wagner
Still any news yet?
I want to emphasize that two updates to two Ubuntu LTS versions broke the one
of the main features of the preferred container runtime on Ubuntu (over
docker). A patch is ready and tested and after six weeks no further reaction...

Greetings,
André

[Bug 2052961] Re: Error: OCI runtime error: crun: chmod : Operation not supported

2024-03-25 Thread Andre Wagner
Hi @all,
a colleague of mine also experienced the same problem with Ubuntu linux kernel
version 5.15.0-101 (on Ubuntu 22.04). The patch I made
(ignore_enotsup_when_chmod_a_symlink.patch) fixes also this problem.

Greetings,
André

Hi Daniel,

See the attachments. Thanks for your prompt reply

It happened again, right after the changes you suggested.

How else can I help?

Thanks,

Ken

Would be glad to test in detail.

Logseq only added in past 3 weeks. Other apps used for over a year (with
updates).

[Bug 2058118] [NEW] CPU usage too high. System either stops for a minute or greatly lags

2024-03-16 Thread Ken Wagner
Public bug reported:

CPU usage for gnome-shell skyrockets 25% to over 125%. System stops for
a minute or longer. Other times everything lags and stutters.

1. Does not matter if I use X.org or Nvidia (470 tested release for my GT720
card with two monitors).
2. Turning Gnome Extensions on and off doesn't help.
3. Using Ubuntu 23.10.Updated regularly.
4. This issue started about 7 months ago.

I expect the halts and stutters to go away. Nothing has helped so far.
I mostly use Firefox 123.0.1, logseq 0.10.7, US Gov weather, Nautilus,
LibreOffice Writer, Thunderbird Email, gedit and text editor (gnome) and VS
Code + Rust 1.76. Doesn't matter on using or not using any of these apps. I
usually have 4-5 workspaces over my two monitors.

Kindly advise. Glad to help if I can. What else would you like to know?

Thanks,

Ken Wagner

2024-02-27 Thread Andre Wagner
Hi @all,
I was also unable to run systemd with kernel 6.5.0-21-generic, got the exactly
the same problem.
I backported
https://github.com/containers/crun/commit/be16ee75ff8574698250352302e9d5496d888d69
as a quilt patch for the ubuntu recent version of crun 0.17+dfsg-1.1 (see
attachment). After applying the patch, systemd works again as expected.

Grettings,
André

[Bug 1968335] [NEW] apparmor profile needs extension

2022-04-08 Thread Andre Wagner
Public bug reported:

Hi team,
I've tried to create a socket activated systemd service for supplying a
software tpm for qemu. As it didn't worked I recognized that the swtpm package
ships an apparmor profile. To make it work i've to add a read/write/lock
permission for the tpm's nvram folder and a read/write permission for the tpm's
unix socket used for the connection with qemu.

Since there is no default location for the tpm nvram (correct?) I
suggest using "/var/lib/swtpm" which follows the /var/lib/
convention.

Since there is no default location for the tpm unix socket I suggest
using "/run/swtpm/sock" which follows the systemd.socket unit
conventions

A patch which adds the settings is attached to this message.

Greetings,
André

[Bug 1965984] [NEW] Cannot build udeb with debhelper 13.6ubuntu1

2022-03-22 Thread Andre Wagner
Public bug reported:

Hi,
I'm trying to rebuild a traditional server installer, therefore I've to build
Debian-Installer udeb Packages. But this does not work with debhelper
13.6ubuntu1 on the actual ubuntu 22.04 prerelease. I found the root cause: It's
ubuntu specific patch on debhelper described in debian changelog as "Imply
'' profile if not set on package type udeb". I reverted that patch and
now the build of udebs works again.

Greetings,
André

anybody patches the ubuntu package to ship it anyways).

releases.

(speaking with my debian maintainers hat on, I'm not feeling responsible
for fixing bugs in ubuntu)

[Bug 1942935] Re: kernel io hangs during mdcheck/resync

2021-09-13 Thread Chad Wagner
Here is Donald Buczek's reproducer script. I setup an Ubuntu 20.04 VM
with latest linux-image-generic and was able to reproduce it within
maybe 10 or 15 minutes. Exactly the same issue.

Filesystem layout built as follows:

# assemble raid devices
mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 --spare-devices=1 /dev/sda2
/dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2
mdadm --create /dev/md1 --level=5 --raid-devices=5 /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3
/dev/sdc3 /dev/sdd3 /dev/sde3

# create PVs, VGs, LVs
pvcreate /dev/md1
vgcreate vg1 /dev/md1
lvcreate --name root --extents 100%FREE vg1

# create filesystems
mkfs.ext4 /dev/md0
mkfs.ext4 /dev/vg1/root

[Bug 1942935] Re: kernel io hangs during mdcheck/resync

2021-09-13 Thread Chad Wagner
The patch hasn't made it into mainline from what I have seen, it looks
like it died back in March waiting for feedback from additional kernel
developers. From what I have gathered this is a deadlock scenario
directly caused by pausing the resync while the system is under heavy
write activity.

Donald Buczek provided a reproducer which is a shell script that
generates a lot of write activity and pauses/resumes the raid scrubbing.
And he also provided a workaround to get the stuck system running
without reboot:

echo active > /sys/block/md1/md/array_state

I haven't tried the patch or any of this, I pretty much eliminated the trigger
which is mdcheck_start & mdcheck_continue and went back to the 18.04 LTS way of
scrubbing arrays (which is basically don't pause/interrupt it once it starts).
I ran through a checkarray yesterday to 100%, no problems. Meanwhile since
upgrading to 20.04 LTS it has hung almost every single time through 5.4, 5.8,
and 5.11 kernels.

2021-09-12 Thread Chad Wagner
Similar report here on 5.10.0-rc4:
https://www.spinics.net/lists/raid/msg66654.html

I ended up masking the services introduced with 20.04 LTS, and switched back
the crontab.

systemctl mask mdcheck_continue.service mdcheck_continue.timer
mdcheck_start.service mdcheck_start.timer
cat > /etc/cron.d/mdadm << 'EOF'
#
# cron.d/mdadm -- schedules periodic redundancy checks of MD devices
#
# Copyright © martin f. krafft
# distributed under the terms of the Artistic Licence 2.0
#

# By default, run at 00:57 on every Sunday, but do nothing unless the day of
# the month is less than or equal to 7. Thus, only run on the first Sunday of
# each month. crontab(5) sucks, unfortunately, in this regard; therefore this
# hack (see #380425).
57 0 * * 0 root if [ -x /usr/share/mdadm/checkarray ] && [ $(date +\%d) -le 7
]; then /usr/share/mdadm/checkarray --cron --all --idle --quiet; fi
EOF

The pausing and resuming of the integrity check was an annoyance for me
anyways.

[Bug 1942935] Re: kernel io hangs during mdcheck/resync

2021-09-08 Thread Chad Wagner
Hi Kleber,
I installed it later yesterday, but I won't know until the next resync. This
has been a problem since at least linux 5.4 kernel that shipped with Ubuntu
20.04. I don't think I had these problems on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, the same
hardware, running the linux-image-generic at that time.

Re: [Bug 1916778] Re: After 5.4.0-66 kernel upgrade, HP Spectre screen flickers

2021-02-26 Thread John Wagner
Okay, I understand that I need to change the bug status to "Confirmed."
But I'm still not clear how. The problem appeared after I installed the
latest kernel upgrade, not a specific package.

Sorry if I'm being particularly obtuse about this, but I'm still not
entirely sure how to give you the information you need.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at
https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwiki.ubuntu.com%2FBugs%2FFindRightPackagedata=04%7C01%7Cjiw2%40psu.edu%7Cc0ac17f857b447b31d8e08d8d903bca4%7C7cf48d453ddb4389a9c1c115526eb52e%7C0%7C1%7C637497957368206382%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000sdata=LIcp3%2BiodVzbd5CoDO8s6OdaoyYm3Rye4xH2jGyQw9M%3Dreserved=0.

2021-02-26 Thread John Wagner
Friday, Feb. 26, 2021 Followup:

As an experiment, I turned off my Logitech bluetooth mouse and connected
an old Logitech USB mouse. It made no difference.

I took things a step further, and connected an external display to the
machine (a Dell 19" flatscreen monitor). No flickering; the external
display is normal. The problem appears to be in the driver for the
built-in monitor.

I shold also note that when the machine is in the BIOS, there is no
display problem, which, I believe, rules out a video-card failure.

[Bug 1916778] Re: After 5.4.0-66 kernel upgrade, HP Spectre screen flickers

2021-02-26 Thread John Wagner
Friday, Feb. 26, 2021 Followup.

Yesterday, 2/25/2021, my machine was free of errors. I had no illusions
that my screen problem had miraculously gone away, and I was right.
This morning, 2/26/2021, I found the following errors:

1: My scheduled nightly backup (to an external USB disk) had not
happened.

2: The screen-scrambling problem returned.

3: The machine did not blank its screen after 15 minutes, as it is
configured to do.

4: Although my temperature monitor did not report anything unusual, the
machine was running noticeably warmer than usual.

5: The Bluetooth drivers were not loading, leaving my Bluetooth mouse
unusable.

6: The screen breaks up and becomes unusable at approximately 20-second
intervals. (I am typing this during the moments of usability).

I had to reboot and/or pause the machine in order to suppress the video
problem to the extent that I am able to file this comment. Several
times it went into Pause mode spontaneously. The periods of screen
unusability are becoming longer.

Please advise me when any further developments appear.

So, i don't know if it is strange or if it is a fix but today a simple:

sudo apt-get -f install

fixed the problem.

After installing the latest Ubuntu kernel update, the screen of my HP
Spectre laptop began flickering into distorted illegibility at frequent
-- but unpredictable -- intervals. The machine is unusable when this
occurs. Additionally, GIMP has begun crashing unpredictably.

I have rebooted many times. I have changed the display drivers
(currently using the X.org driver). None of this has affected the
  problem.

I have searched online for possible fixes, and found nothing useful.
HP's "support" is useless, since they only deal with Windows.
StackExchange referred me to this site.

I hope I have reported correctly. Thank you.

[Bug 1909264] Re: Problem with ‘mysql-server-core-8.0_8.0.22-0ubuntu0.20.04.3_armhf.deb

2020-12-25 Thread Ernest Wagner
I completed the build from source and discovered that the problem lies
with the cmake/make rules from Oracle as the build from source resulted
in the build of myself as a shared object instead of an executable.

My apology. This issue can be closed.

The "bot* wouldn't accept the package as valid, but I downloaded it from
a Ubuntu server. The problem belongs to whomever (cross)compiled the
code and added it to the package.

I also notified the mirror manager.
