My comment is not necessarily hypocritical because the person I was
describing will ALWAYS be under-served whereas under-served people who
have a greater ability to learn can at least move beyond being
under-served.

If only you knew how many hours I've spent trying to help her.

I suppose how I wrote it sounds disrespectful. I do respect her and the
things she DOES know how to do. Pretty much what I wrote her is what I
told her and we laughed about it. She knows quite well that she is a
horrible student with computers. I respect that she keeps trying.

If you called me dumb for being so bad at cooking because I burn
Macaroni and Cheese, I'd laugh and completely agree with you. But you
are referring to my ability and not me as a person. Do you disrespect
me because I can't cook?

Kudos to your efforts with teaching people. The world needs more of
you.

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Creating Viral Videos - Who's interested? (jared)

2010-02-08 Thread John Vilsack
Since this seems to be a thread about commercial brainstorming, I
might as well just throw this out there.

Ubuntu.

For you.
And you.
And you.
And you.
And you.
And you.
And you.
And you.

Ubuntu For You.

In my head, I see a giant mirror that you are required to hold with
two hands. Make it circular, and the Ubuntu logo is the frame with
the middle being reflective. Each scene of the commercial has the
person holding the mirror out saying "For you" while you see the
reflection of somebody else in the mirror. Then the holder "gives"
the Ubuntu Mirror to that person or persons, who repeats the process.
The end could be a reflection of the world and its handed offscreen to
fade to white.

Of course, something like this actually would require a budget,
planning, and subsequent planning how each "case" was really Ubuntu
for the masses. But it would help to define a more authentic branding
that doesn't have to associate with other products in the same niche
for recognition.

I agree. We need to be "beating our own drum". Let these loud
vibrations that are uniquely Ubuntu resonate around the globe.

Here's an example:

"Ubuntu. If you don't have it, all you have is software." <--
emphasizes the community aspect, which is the key differentiator in my
opinion.

The computer industry has a lot of baggage, and a lot of misinformation
(noise). Layers and layers of misused terminology, FUD, etc.

Our job is to cut through that with a clear, uniquely identifiable, and
human signal, properly aimed.

Cheers,

Liam picked up working on a wiki page:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarketingTeam/Projects/UbuntuViralVideos

This page is from a couple years ago, but he updated it with some new
info. I went ahead and brought back the old ideas from 2008 so there
is a basis to work from.

I don't actually have time to get too involved, but if someone wants
to pitch in to add the ideas from the past week (at the bottom of the
wiki page there is an "Ideas for videos" section), and update/tweak
the ideas which are old - please do!

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] MOSS: Your Monthly FLOSS Magazine

2010-02-08 Thread Yusuf Abdulla Shunan
Hi

MOSS, is proud to present it's second issue. Like we thought and as was
warned that this is a challenge, MOSS aims to be a monthly magazine; and of
course we know the burden it puts on us.

This issue features six writers who help comprise the vanguard of FLOSS in
the Maldives. In addition to how-tos, how we did it, "what I use" and "what
I think of"! In this magazine you can find an insight of challenges the IT
Industry of Maldives will face in the next 2 years. Details of the Moodle
project localization to Dhivehi. Other articles include introduction of
various Linux programs used by our members. How to build or compile from
source tar files and about Linux desktop environments, this time KDE. Last
but not the least, a small nostalgic writeup of the magazine history for the
/dev/null.

Grab a copy at http://www.moss.org.mv/

Your post shows a great lack of respect for others. Have you
appreciated the Ubuntu code of conduct?
However, I applaud that you have tried to help her.

I run four PCs for a local charity whose members are adults with
learning difficulty. Abilities range widely.
However the members use the PCs with no training, no supervision, and
over a couple of years there have been no problems. I am IT support
and there is only a very rare question to me.

I have an elderly relative (now nearly 90 years) who uses Ubuntu for
online shopping for groceries.

In previous years I set up and ran a computer centre with one to one
help for older people, for Windows. I ceased doing that because Ubuntu
is very much more appropriate for novices or vulnerable people (and
everybody else too) than Windows.

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Creating Viral Videos - Who's interested? (Jason)

2010-02-08 Thread Jason
Paul from what I understand and I sort of summarise what others have said...
What the Windows 7 advertisments are trying to communicate by saying "I'm a
PC and Windows 7 was my Idea" is that the developers of windows actually
listen to their end users. It puts power in the users hands by saying "I did
it". Windows 7 users start to feel that they are an important part of the
brand and the software development process and on some psychological level
own the software :)... Most large companies will go to great extents to find
out what their customers want. By creating this environment of "we are
listening" and "its all about you" they win people's hearts and generate a
healthy feedback mechanise where the end users tell the developer the sort
of features they want to see :)... This is great market research for the
devloper And the amazing feeling of contributing to something is what
keeps users loyal to the brand. Very much like what open source software
does... Just my 20cents worth hehehe...
