[ubuntu-marketing] Whyubuntu.com : : Status Update?

2009-01-06 Thread Christopher Swift
Hello again, I am just trying to find out where you guys are regarding
the whyubuntu.com project. I would like to find out people's progress so
far. At this moment in time I have just secured myself a director i.e. a
student doing Film & Media Studies. We're working out the fine details
of the project over here as a contributor on this end. I would like to
make a request however to Jacob; my friend would happily help the
project however he is asking if he may use his work on his course
portfolio & projects. Also it would be appreciated if it was possible
for him to use the final videos too however he of course wouldn't be
referenced as the author rather a contributor refering to the final
project, especially the case of the "I Am Ubuntu" sub-project to show
the examiner the community end-product and how his contribution can be
used together to create something bigger.

I'd also like to find out what you guys are up to if you are
contributing?
  * Have you started planning and/or recording yet?
  * Have any of you thought of any more ideas?
  * How far is the webdesign looking?
  * Do we have a set structure now for the I am Ubuntu ad, i.e.
"Hello my name is Chris and I am Ubuntu" or "Hello my name is
Chris, I am a student and I use Ubuntu freely for my work." etc.
Any furthers ideas/brainstorms?

Regards,
Chris

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Hopeful News for a 2009 Advertising Campaign

2009-01-04 Thread Christopher Swift
Ronnie good ideas if you don't mind taking constructive criticism I have a
few minor points:

   - Perhaps there could've been more dynamics/interactivity rather than
   just screenshots?
   - The video was a bit lengthy so it can feel to some users to drag on a
little bit, perhaps a 30 sec video would've been more adequate for us
   attention spanless people? :)
   - Blurriness was unfortunate but not much that can be done if that was a
   side-effect of Google video?
   - No sound? D: Perhaps next time (if there is a next time) you could add
some suitable music or perhaps a little voiceover? :)

Other than those little points, the choice of images, applications, video
skills were all superb! Its a good little starter vid to say the least and a
pleasure to watch :).

2009-01-03 Thread Christopher Swift
It's 4:30am here and reading that had sparked me alive. That is a fantastic
idea, especially to us Newtonian physicists out there! Videos, that really
capture your attention and then conclude with a URL/logo/brandname force
people to quesitons others, have you seen this advert? It was really cool
wasn't it? Have you heard of Ubuntu (or whyubuntu.com) etc. It inspires
thought & debate! Leaving an URL at the end, only makes me wanna go visit
the site to find out more about Ubuntu after such advertisements. In short,
Ronnie Tucker that is a genius plan to me.

The only problem is if the video quality isn't up to spec, i.e. lags,
distortion, bad theme etc but if pulled off right it sounds pretty damn good
:D. To add at the end might I suggest, perhaps a bank of Microsoft dollar
and then have something else (I can't think quite what yet) to show that one
costs, one is free. Perhaps the Microsoft dollar is copyrighted but it would
be a nice final addition to the advert/video clip. :D

That's my tupence,
Chris.

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Hopeful News for a 2009 Advertising Campaign

2009-01-03 Thread Christopher Swift
Yeah I have a few friends doing media studies so perhaps they can enhance
their portfolio and especially since they actually know how to record videos
and stuff unlike myself! Perhaps saying "I lost a quarter of my weight" or
something similar. Or, this was me before Linux *photo*, this was me after
*photo* but for that we'd need a person who used to be quite large, and
explaining the difference was with Windows & Linux instead of switching from
McDonalds to salads. I am looking forward to Thursday to see if the site is
ready :).

2009-01-03 Thread Christopher Swift
Just to clarify, have you bought www.whyubuntu.com because it redirects to
SourceGuru.net :S? Or has a domain squatter caught it?
Luckily I start back at college this week so I'm thinking of perhaps
recording I am Ubuntu in the college library surrounded by some books or
something. I feel that we should note that Ubuntu has both many language
support & customisability too. On a side note however, "I lost 75pounds",
the United States is one of the few countries that actually measure in
pounds. The UK measures for the most part in stone and the rest of Europe
measuring in kilograms. When I hear more than 14 pounds being mentioned on
the TV, there is just one word for it "cringe". It completely repels me from
the object being advertised since they haven't considered that people
outside of America will view that advert... But other than that, great
ideas, keep 'em coming :)

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Submission for "I am Ubuntu"

2008-12-31 Thread Christopher Swift
I expect that after the New Year, well a few days after the videos will be
coming in, I don't wanna record a few videos with an hangover if the truth
be told. I too need to make myself presentable and there is not much point
this late at night since it's too dark to record an I'm Ubuntu ad, after I
have got rid of this awful stubble I'll be sure to send a few in. I'm still
planning where to record it if the truth be told, i.e. in my home, in the
village etc. The joys of portable cameras can be their downfall too :).

After we all sober up I think there's gonna be a few vids being sent in. I
can't wait to see what they're like.

2008-12-31 Thread Christopher Swift
If you're interested on my debate with myself about which term I felt best
to use I've settled with "Helo, fy enw i yw Chris a dw i'n Ubuntu" but to be
honest I'll settle with the standard English format since it promotes
uniformity rather than variations. On a side note however, I've been
thinking ahead beyond individual clips now. I've been thinking should we
watermark the first 5 seconds or so with something like "Recorded by the
Ubuntu community" and should we have something that tells us what the heck
Ubuntu is? We could have a 4person box all saying hello my name is x and I
am Ubuntu, then following that we can have the 4 or so people telling us
points about Ubuntu and it's philosophy. "Ubuntu is a free, more secure
alternative to Windows" "Ubuntu is built on the foundation of humanity to
others" I'm sure that the rest of you can elaborate the wording on that, as
you can tell my language skills aren't too advanced when it comes to
advertising but I have a general idea of what the scenarios should be like
or theories at least. I'll add more ideas when the site gets up and we might
have some more participation. Hopefully we can get some forums ready soon
however :).

Regards,
Chris.

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Submission for "I am Ubuntu"

2008-12-31 Thread Christopher Swift
Then again I am Chris and I am Ubuntu can portray that my name is Ubuntu
too. That's the problem with using other languages, although I speak both
Welsh & English I find it hard to translate between the two :|. So unless I
think what would be best to convey the message in this tongue then I believe
that I'll be sticking with English since I barely see any Welsh
advertisements, perhaps there's a reason for that in this language in
comparisson to English.

In my original mail however, I've addressed some issues on
advertisement/sentence structure that I think should be addressed as well as
the backdrop of the scenario & style of the person speaking. Should be a
nerdy geek with glasses? Or should he be hip & trendy? Could he even be a
farmer, builder etc?

I'll leave that part up to the professionals I guess.

Again with kind regards,
Chris.

2008-12-31 Thread Christopher Swift
In regards to my previous message, sorry any fellow Welsh speakers out there
I mangled the language because I was in English 'mode'. What it should've
really said now that I'm back to thinking in Welsh is something like "Helo,
Chris ydw i ac Ubuntu ydw i". That is a lot shorter to say and makes more
sense than what I would've previously put forward. It just sounds more
normal than my previous message in my head and to other speakers. Also
including helo as I forgot to introduce myself to the audience. Then again I
guess that I am Chris and I am Ubuntu would've been sufficient. All
non-Welsh speakers can ignore this message ;).

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Submission for "I am Ubuntu"

2008-12-31 Thread Christopher Swift
I have been actively thinking about how best to record a video myself for
the project since Sunday. I've been thinking of what environment to set
myself in when recording too. Since there are only 75,000 people that share
my accent and just 2,500,000 people in my country I've been thinking that I
really should represent my country-folk for Ubuntu. Recently thanks to
winter, there's been some snow & frost around so I've been thinking should I
set it in a snowy wonderland or should I wait until the environment is more
normal for my area i.e. not as much snow? Then I've been thinking, where
best to situate it. Should we have videos say in the garden, at work, at
college/school, in the forest, near the river, by the rugby fields etc? Then
I was thinking, should we go hip & cool like Apple, or should we have normal
people in normal clothing just like Micro$oft's ad campaign?

Also as recently suggested what about the wording? Should we restrict
ourselves to just English as well? Should it be,
Hello my name is Chris and I am Ubuntu. Or perhaps it could be "Chris ydy
f'enw i a dwi'n Ubuntu"?
Or perhaps Hi, I am Chris & I am a student that uses Ubuntu. Hi I am Chris,
I come from Wales and I use Ubuntu. etc.
We should underline what structure to use before we actually set out any
further plans. Would using other languages on the other hand further enhance
the Ubuntu (humanity) message? Also the ending of the video
ad/collage/campaigns, what will the ending part be like? Just a simple logo
& url to ubuntu.com or a further explanation or a short little message in
text? Perhaps on the website you could hold a poll/vote or even try to set
one up via this mailing list. Just some food for thought.

Regards,
Christopher Swift.

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Radio Advertising

2008-12-15 Thread Christopher Swift
In answer to Bret's questions.
1) So far the audience is not as tech savvy as you or I however for the most
part they are quite proficient in Windows XP/Vista thus making them the
hardest group of computer users to Linuxify. I'm sure than many of them have
heard of the term OSS but genuinely have no idea about what it means.

2) The first radio station in mind has quite literally said that the ads can
be run at any time for any duration as long as normal programming is not
disrupted, i.e. not playing 6 adverts an hour just because we can.

3) Regarding the official Canonical marketing department, obviously they
will be involved as we are going to be using the Ubuntu name, however I'm
pretty sure that they monitor this mailing list but thanks for the email
nevertheless.

Now what I have planned, is not yet a script but moreover a beta advert to
see the effects and hopefully being able to gather some opinions from people
who have listened to the advert. Admittedly, Microsoft adverts make me
"cringe", a British term meaning churning in my stomach so I'm kinda hoping
that these do not have the same effect as I'm afraid iPhone adverts do also
to me. What I have envisioned is; a simple short advert, or short series of
adverts detailing some benefits of Ubuntu over Vista, including what Ubuntu
means perhaps at the end of each advert. Perhaps including separate adverts
or a combined advert on the speed differences, additional security, lack of
crashes/blue screens of death etc. Admittedly this is beginning to sound
like a Mac advert but I guess in a way, the principles are the same.

I'm kinda excited about this though as I have never realised radio marketing
as a way to appeal to the masses and yet now it seems so obvious! Of course
I cannot stress this enough but when this gets drafted or completed, we
should be able to provide transcripts, fading sounds, intro sounds etc that
the original English advert had for other languages such as Dutch, French,
German or even Welsh (my native language) so all that would be required is
to change the ogg/mp3 where the voice-over of the advert was. When I get
back this evening (6pm GMT) I'll probably write up some drafts and forward
it to the mailing list, take some constructive criticism and then improve
and follow that process until I get something uncriticisable!

Absolutely! Ubuntu podcasters already have the skills for the job. Of course
if/when we get the ad written up, I think that we should make a post in our
locale mailing lists, for example Ubuntu-UK, with copies of a transcript and
seperate mp3/ogg files that can be combined to make the final piece,
allowing room for translations or indeed accent differences with the US. And
then hopefully, it'll be a viral ad on many people's internet and even local
radio stations. I intend on contacting one and see if in my area they have
lower rates for non-profit radio adverts and then hold a fund-raiser for my
local Linux user group to cover it.

But before we get carried away, I'm going to spend this week working on
drafts and I would be eternally grateful if you have an idea and post it
even if your email just contains the words "I'm a PC, I'm a Mac". No, I am
not intending for it to be in that style but if you said that I'd get the
picture asap. I'll be posting for some volunteer jobs if anyone's interested
however.

Thanks for reading,

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Radio Advertising

2008-12-14 Thread Christopher Swift
I've spoken to the station owner, they have two servers on which they
broadcast the radio on. They've said as Ubuntu is a non-profit organisation
they have no problem advertising it for free and we can have any length
advertisement slot. I'm now in the progress of explaining Ubuntu and OSS. I
need to contact another person to get the demographics but they have said
that there are roughly 500 people always tuned in with of course peaks at
certain times of the night and day.

By the thanks for your interest Bret, I obviously won't be able to do this
alone, I'm a student of science and not of media :P

[ubuntu-marketing] Radio Advertising

2008-12-14 Thread Christopher Swift
Hello, I am searching for some advice on radio advertising for
Ubuntu-Marketing. I have found out that I can get a free radio slot on a
community radio station so I am trying to make the most of it. The community
has roughly 48,000 members and I'd hope that 10% listen to the radio daily
so that gives me room for about 4800 to listen to the adverts. I am
searching for a pre-composed radio advert for Ubuntu; if this is not
possible or simply doesn't exist yet then I am willing to try and
co-ordinate an attempt to setup a recording myself.

If you are able to help out, whether it be with an existing advert or
perhaps with voiceovers or help with the radio advert script or even sound
editting I'd be fully greatful. Hopefully if it gets done, we can release it
under the GPL 2 licence or other for other Ubuntu users to freely use on
their respective sites/stations.

If you have any ideas, please mail them back to me (and the rest of the
list). No matter how silly it sounds ;-). I hope that we can set off and
really make this work.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Christopher Swift
