Re: Should I try Ubuntu Mobile?
Okay then: here start my questions. I am sad to say that I will start of with a question that I should know the answer to, but I never came around to find out how it works. If I run apt-get install moblin-image-creator (as su) my dear EEEpc responds with: Reading package list.done Builinng dependency tree done E: couldn 't find package mobilin-image-creator I als tried this on a Ubuntu 7.10 64 bit system, same result. What is the problem? What am I missing? Hi. Did you enable the universe repository? Adilson, is the version in that repo up-to-date? Several weeks ago, I had an issue where the version I was getting via apt-get was out-of-date and couldn't build a working target. FWIW, the directions here -- http://www.moblin.org/documentation_howto/howto_create-image.php -- worked for me, and proved to be the only way I could find that provided the most up-to-date version of Moblin Image Creator. Though that issue may well be resolved by now. Re: taking screenshots of UME on a Samsung Q1
Thanks very much for the reply -- but I got a command not found error trying to use scrot. I'm working with the full-mobile-stack-with-proprietary. Moblin Media launching issues?
Last night I built a fresh target with Image Creator, using the full-mobile-stack-with-proprietary fset, created an install USB key, and installed it fully on a Q1U. I've got the device booting into UME but the Moblin Media apps refuse to start from the home screen (they show the loading message but then it just sits there). I've discovered that I can run it (the Photo viewer) by invoking moblin-media from the command line, but just thought I'd ask if anyone else has experienced this and knows what's up. differences between test running in Xephyr and running on a device
For the past few days I've been experimenting with Ubuntu Mobile on my Gutsy workstation via Xephyr. Today, I got my hands on a Samsung Q1 Ultra and I've booted into UME using a LiveUSB key that I created from my development target w/ Moblin Image Creator (full mobile stack w/ proprietary, if that matters). I'm interested in understanding better why there are some differences between running in Xephyr and running on the Q1U. Here are some of the major differences that I've been noticing: 1) Home screen: In Xephyr, next to the Home icon in the upper right, I see All with no menu times below it. 14 app icons appear on the home screen. On the Q1U, I get a dropdown menu up there, where I can select Mobile/Internet/Games/Tools/Testing/All to filter those 14 icons to smaller sets, or there's a Settings option that reveals 10 new icons (About Me/Desktop Background... etc) that I didn't know existed. Why couldn't I access this in Xephyr? 2) In Xephyr, the three games fail to load up every time. They seem to work as intended on the Q1U. Any idea why that would be? 3) In Xephyr, once I've used ctrl+shift to grab the mouse keyboard, I can use alt+tab to switch apps directly in UME (totally independent of the app switching for the parent workstation). On the Q1U, whether I've attached a keyboard or I'm using the built-in keyboard, I apparently can't switch apps that way. Seems odd. Would be very interested to learn more about what's going on here. Re: test-running the UI
I've followed the instructions at that link (thanks for sending, Ling) but I've hit a failure point at Step 5 (Test the target image UI on the workstation -- which for me is the final goal, so it's not really an optional step). When I run ume-xephyr-start per the instructions, I get this: == Setting screen resolution to 1024x600 Setting DISPLAY=:0 Starting dbus * system message bus already started; not starting. Starting UI in Xephyr error opening security policy file /etc/X11/xserver/SecurityPolicy Extended Input Devices not yet supported. So, it seems like there are multiple other problems; where do I begin to tackle them? I'm following the directions here, just hoping to test-run the UI: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MobileAndEmbedded/CreatingAnImageForUMEDevice It's easy to follow until I reach the Choose a Functional Set section. My issues: 1. I can't seem to find any documentation to help me choose which functional set I should choose for my purposes -- I'm fine assuming that samsung-full-mobile-stack, as shown in the example is most appropriate, but please correct me if I'm wrong or point me toward more info on this 2. At the end of this section I come to this: ...we can use the Terminal button to open a chrooted terminal and run the hildon environment directly in a Xephyr session. How? I got Xephyr installed but I don't really understand its README well enough yet to know how to actually make UME/Hildon run in it. I'm trying to figure it out myself but hoping someone on the list can help set the context better for all this, because it's is all new stuff for me.
