Despite of collecting data and other reasons, shouldn't this not already
reason enough for not using Facebook at all.

Agreed but the sad reality is that everyone uses facebook so unless you
want to be isolated from them you have to as well. Vicious circle. And
you can't say they don't matter, otherwise we wouldn't have an app
installed as standard, they've got the world cornered so I guess that's
why they can make these bad decisions with no thought for the little guy.

Yes I think an open source alternative will come one day. I personally
have worked on an open source decentralized social network and chat app:

Here's some screenshots:
https://www.gitbook.com/book/melvincarvalho/solid-social/details

Which is based on Tim Berners-Lee's new decentralized platform, Solid :

https://github.com/solid/solid/

(PS it's awesome!) :)

It's just a lot of work for one person. And the free software alternatives
out there dont really provide enough decentralization to offer the users
freedom. I'll continue to work on this, and all my development is
primarily done with ubuntu desktop / phone / tablet as a target. Im hoping
that this will start to be usable later this year.

What would be needed to deliver this kind of thing more easily to Ubuntu is
to enhance the "Public" folder a bit so that it can have access to the
web. Then let 1000 apps bloom.

There was a large glut of people uninstalling the app (from Android, at least,
but I suspect iOS was the same) a short while ago after it became more and more
intrusive, and they went back to the web client. I suspect this is Facebook's
kickback against that. Yeah, just try to get people to install Telegram
alongside it - at least it's free and quite easy to do, so you may be able to
get some converts. I don't know how well the full site views on a phone - if
it's usable, you could create a web-app with a desktop user agent string so you
get the full site on your phone (and still keep the site sandboxed). That's
what I did with an app I knocked up and pushed up to the store - Fatter: which
gives a full-fat Twitter experience (e.g. you can control list membership, etc).

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] A very open thank you.

2016-06-14 Thread Daniel Wood
This sounds like a good opportunity to start a little community app!!

A couple of questions:

1. Can the facebook messages be accessed via any of the official facebook
APIs?
2. Are there any opensource libraries to connect to facebook (C++,
Javascript or Python)

Any work that we can do here could possibly translate in to a messaging
plugin once the messaging framework is ready.

Any one fancy doing a bit of research to see whats available?

Thanks,

Dan

So a proprietary services provider doesn't share his services with FOSS
community. Old story, I'm not surprised at all.

On the other hand, I'm surprised that Ubuntu, as a part of FOSS community,
doesn't endorse projects like Diaspora, GNU Social (but also XMPP and other open
protocols/standars) and so on, with an official implementation.

There's a lot of opportunity in FOSS, trace your path in freedom Ubuntu, be the
free (as in freedom) and open alternative.

I don't think Facebook would be interested in people's money (directly) - I
think they'd be much more interested in a constant advertising stream and
access to your data. Though in UT this is nicely sandboxed, so they'd only get
what data you used via the app, rather than having carte-blanche to everything
that's set up in the security permissions, as happens with iOS and Android (so
I think this would be a _lot_ less attractive to them).

The reason that the FOSS social web hasnt taken off is endorsement of
products that dont scale and you end up replacing one silo with another.

The FOSS social web is a pretty terrible landscape, with 99% trying to
evangelize non interoperable solutions.

The real failure was not to listen to Tim Berners-Lee who explained how to
design the social web the same way as the original web. Or simply swallow
your pride and clone facebook exactly, but allow cross domain
communication. Essentially these projects have gone sideways for years,
and will continue to do so. Hopefully a new breed will bring a solution
closer.

If Ubuntu endorsed something good it would make a difference. But GNU
social and diaspora are not it. In fact I did talk to mattl about building
the social tier of GNU social, but I just didnt have enough resource and so
the largely abandoned status.net was inherited.

Free software and ubuntu need a first class social experience. I think the
way forward is more along the lines of everyone owning their own data on
their OS (phone, tablet, desktop, server) and then allowing those data
stores to start to communicate with each other. Maybe if a revamped Ubuntu
One was added at some point in the future, and adopted, say, Solid. There
would be real potential. I hope to get time to build it, but probably
would need the next LTS cycle to make it mature enough to use.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] A very open thank you.

2016-06-14 Thread Alan Bell
If you are looking for the one true branded social platform at one URL
and with all humans of the world on it, and you want the Ubuntu phone to
support it then you are doing it wrong. The whole webapp approach based
on Url patterns seems to be doing it wrong. it supports single url
instances of software as a service platforms. We have a lens that works
for bbc.co.uk, a webapp that works for gmail.com etc, they are built to
work with fixed fully qualified domain names owned by other people.
What would be cool is having the webapp architecture work so that you
can build a webapp for "elgg instances" so you can go to
https://elgg.org/ and install elgg on your Ubuntu server for your tennis
club or school or software community and we have a client for the Ubuntu
phone that works well with software on your Ubuntu server. Not a client
on your Ubuntu phone that works OK with a specific proprietary SaaS
platform that hates freedom.

right, you would just have a snappy cloud instance (or your rpi at home
running snappy) that has the backend server as a snap to provide you
what you need, including full notification support etc in a safe, self
hosted way ...

[Ubuntu-phone] ANNOUNCEMENT: Bileto jobs are now cancellable.

2016-06-14 Thread Robert Park
Hello,

Just a quick update that the jobs which run in bileto (currently the
build & diff jobs, hopefully more soon), are now cancellable. When you
run jobs you'll now see a big cancel button in the log output as long
as the job is still running.

This cancellation is much more sophisticated than the jenkins
cancellation feature. Under jenkins it would simply kill the process,
but the bileto cancellation is more polite and requests the process to
shutdown, which it does only at certain safe points.

In particular, once the job begins uploading packages to the PPA, the
cancellation requests will be ignored, so it should not be possible to
cancel uploads halfway through uploading and get an inconsistent PPA
as a result. Cancelling is however possible throughout the merging and
source build stages of the build job, which takes up most of the time.

If you realize you need to cancel a build, best be quick on that
cancel button! The average run time for the build job is just 3
minutes and 18 seconds.

As always, please do let me know if you have any troubles with this or
anything else at ci-train.ubuntu.com.

well, I guess all bugs are in that state for default :D

For this project in particular, the idea is to have bugs that are, let's
say, "ready to be implemented", this is, that won't require a hard load of
decision making. I see that the bug you sent implies a design decision on
how the phone should behave, so it might not be suitable for this.

It seems (reading the man page, untested) that with pactl one can
control the volume:

pactl set-sink-volume SINK VOLUME

I'm wondering why there is no GUI support for this in the BQ and/or why
the normal volume control does not address as well pulseaudio; is
this just a bug or by intention?

[Ubuntu-phone] Landing team 14.06.16

2016-06-14 Thread Lukasz Zemczak
Hello everyone!

Today we only had a few selective landings, meaning: a ciborium
release fixing the arm64 builds, touch seed updates and a new upstream
backport version of network manager (1.2.2).

The aforementioned seed changes basically removed the
ubuntu-pocket-desktop meta-package and seeds as they are no longer
needed. We also added the required libertine packages to the touch
seeds, enabling us to finally merge PD and touch together. There are
no longer two separate rootfses for frieza/cooler and the rest. We're
still waiting for the updated custom tarballs though, but once those
are ready we'll resume frieza/cooler builds on system-image. The turbo
devices will also get a separate PD-related channel now.

In the meantime, if you're a developer be sure to check out two other
posts on this mailing list: beta-testing of the SDK [1] and the Band
Aids [2].

Cheers!

yeah, the whole GPS/Location services thing is immensely frustrating, it
is causing me to recommend a project to put phones in 101 delivery vans
across Europe doesn't use Ubuntu phone but picks Android devices
instead. I am developing the server side logistics telling the vans
where to go, and I could recommend anything, I would like to have
recommended a phone that is open all the way down to the hardware, but I
simply can't because the GPS is designed to be off all the time just to
save a bit of battery life and I have to have something that works.

My phone still thinks I am in Fitzroy square in London where I was on
Saturday night. It needs a band aid, I am totally up for contributing to
a fix, but if it is designed to not work then I can't really contribute
much.

I use the MX4 and do not have any trouble with the edge gestures, although
some have suggested tuning the pixel count

For the first bug we do not support double tap to wake so something else is
happening to wake the phone. We made a number of recet fixes to reduce the
possibility of various events turning on the screen. Ironically there are
several requests to enable double tap to wake.

There is a bug you may be hitting where the hardware home button stays
active and touching it turns on the screen if the phone has not yet
suspended.

Regarding these bugs, is there a possibility that Android changes
something? I mean where there was installed on Flyme OS (A. 5.1), in some
kind of magic, it changed my phone? And in example added double tab feature

Is there command I can run, to be sure that storage is cleared/parted again?

my pocket (also mx4). I never knew if it was the proximity sensor not
working correctly, or the screen waking up for some other reason, or me
inadvertently pressing the power button (which is weirdly in the upper side
of the phone). I had even reported bugs on that, maybe you can look for
them and +1

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] A very open thank you.

2016-06-14 Thread Art
This is no different than google refusing to allow you to use their
software unless you have a google accountor google refusing to let
you download from the playstore unless you have a google account. Or,
yahoo refusing to allow you access to their mailing lists unless you
have a yahoo account.

In the case of facebook, they don't give a rats tail about a few
ubuntu-phone users. All they see is that your phone doesn't respond
'normally' and since they can't harvest personal information on behalf
of them and their partners, they aren't allowing you to use their services.

Speaking for myself, I am interested in ubuntu-phone because I dumped
microsoft in 2011 and use ubuntu on my laptop everyday. I believe that
what's on my computer is mine and no one else's, and the ubuntu-phone
brings the privacy and security one step closer to realization.

I dumped google, even their search engine. I don't use yahoo, facebook,
twitter, linkedin, yahoo or other services that demand that I compromise
my security or privacy.

I'm new to the list and look forward to the day when I can dump android
in favor of ubuntu-phone.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] baresip for BQ E4.5 and M10 with working audio

2016-06-14 Thread Mattias

Hi Matthias,

Thanks for the great work! I am trying this on a MX4, but I have some
sounds issues. Probably due to different hardware compared to the BQ
devices. When I make a call to an echo service, I can hear a ticking
sound. I think the error is:

main: long async blocking: 1127>100 ms (h=0xb6f9a159 arg=0xded530)

The complete output is available here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/17336821/

Can you maybe share how you tweaked the configuration? I see you changed
some values in ~/.baresip/config at
https://github.com/alfredh/baresip/issues/136
If I remember correctly you also wrote something about using oss.so?
Would be nice if you can help to find the correct values for the MX4 device.

Greetings,

Mattias

Sticking to that analogy I should be able to use the messaging because I

[Ubuntu-phone] And now for something not entirely different

2016-06-14 Thread Gareth France
Thanks to the amazing service provided by BQ and also the users of this
list I found myself with a replacement for my broken phone and a
discount code for the BQ store. I opted to buy a phone to replace that
unbearable android monstrosity my partner has. Knowing she would never
get along with Ubuntu as it's different to what she's used to I opted
for the Android model and thought nothing of it as it's the same phone.

I was mildly surprised by what turned up in the post. There is no doubt
it is the same phone as mine yet it is quite different. The first thing
I noted is that the little pin for removing the sim cards only has one
spike on it, the one for opening the SD card slot is missing. So I
looked at the SD slot and was greeted by blank plastic, no cover there
at all! 2 sim slots just the same but the power button is in the wrong
place. Where the power button should be is what looks like another sim
slot, but this time for housing the SD card. The notification light is
in the wrong place and blinks in an entirely different manner to mine.

All in all it kind of felt like returning home to find someone had
rearranged all the furniture! It will be very interesting to see how
this new handset compares to mine from a usability standpoint (crashing,
hanging, overall speed, etc).

it is the same phone as mine yet it is quite different.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] And now for something not entirely different

I really like the BQ 4.5, and their post-sale support is also great, yet
I'm still hoping that the French manufacturer Wiko will have a their WAX
and Highway models running Ubunbtu phone too.

They are slick, thin and light, plus fast Nvidia Tegra4i chipset with 4G
for about the same price as a BQ4.5.
