In two weeks time we are releasing Ubuntu Maverick Alpha 3. That time is
a good one to download the development version of Ubuntu and go through
the testcases to see if everything works as expected.

Some of those testcases might not be updated, so, updating the testcases
is also a great help.

Please, let us know if you have any other questions.

Re: Hello

2010-05-25 Thread Vince Marsters
Hi,

Just adding my introductions and hellos...

Like Andy I am from the UK but left education a long time ago. I have
been an active Microsoft Technical beta tester (the ones that get
releases not pushed to the public) in the past but have been following
Ubuntu for years. Finally with Lucid I found a release that I felt
confident to use full time in place of Windows. I am now using it on 2
laptops (Acer 8930G and Acer 6935G) and 2 Acer Aspire Revo 3600 units
running as XBMC media centers.
Along with this move to Ubuntu I am also moving most of my personal
testing to Ubuntu as well, hence my presence here. Looking forward to
getting to grips with Maverick when builds are pushed out. My main
method of testing is to try using the builds as a normal user (since my
experience tells me a user will find many more bugs than anyone doing
specific testing) although I also follow testing requests and scripts as
necessary.

I also plan on doing some testing on my Aspire One and on some VMs
running under VMWare and VirtualBox.

Regards

Vince Marsters

Hello!

You can use the tool rmadison (part of ubuntu-dev-tools) which will tell
you the version of a package in different releases.

It is also useful to subscribe to maverick-changes [1] mailing list,
where you receive a message every time there is a new upload to
Maverick. Please, take into account that this is a high-traffic mailing
list and you should filter its messages.

Re: Hello

2010-05-23 Thread E.B. A.
Hello - My name is Enrico and I am new to this list. I have been testing
software for about 10 years, mainly in the aerospace field.
I'd like to be helpful as much as I can.
I already installed Maverick (well, it's embryo) on a VM.
One question: how do I know if a package is new? For example, I noticed the
calculator (gcalctool) is different between Maverick (5.31.1) and Lucid
(5.28.2). I was able to see the difference due to the GUI improvements in
gcalctool. How can I know if a package is modified to be shipped on
Maverick?

Thanks,
Enrico Accenti

Re: hello new eeepc901 tester

2010-05-20 Thread Martin Briscoe
Hi

I have been running ubuntus on my 901 for 18 months.

I usually download and run the alphas and betas so I am happy to
provide feedback if thats useful.

My main current problem with lucid is high power consumption, so the
cpus are unable to drop down from 1.6G to 800M in
powersave. this wasnt the case with 9.10 but I'm not sure when this
problem crept in I think it was quite late.

powertop reports lots more wake ups than usual (500/s). Its bad with
std ubuntu & better but
not perfect with the remix. I am also running unity which looks to have
lots of potential. but I'd like to try autohiding the panels

I'm happy to help test but I'm not terribly technical.

I'm also interested in boot times and have an editable spreadsheet at:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Aib-MC2xtkLhcFRBaGJ1Q3o4WUJSSHNvUzdQNFM2T3c&hl=en_GB

One challenge I see for ubuntu is
a. It wants to be a respected stable household distro (for that it
needs to be error free and robust)
but
b. It also seems to want to be an adventurous, leading edge,
experimental and pioneering distro.

These two aims are hard to bring together. (I prefer the latter, as i
guess do most of the people on this list?)

I'm happy to hear you love Ubuntu as much as I do :)

Just so you know, you may run into issues with the Intel chipset[1], or
with the Nvidia chipset[2], which essentially cause the screen to remain
blank. There are workarounds in both bugs, but it's always better to be
aware that it might not work quite as well as you'd expect sooner rather
than later.

That doesn't mean however that we wouldn't appreciate testing. I'd be
very interested to know about your experiences with it. You just might
want to try with a live CD first.

Kind regards,

Hello Ryan!

As you can see in the wiki [1], the main two entry points are the
Bugsquad [2] and the Testing Team.

Please, have a look to their activities, and let us know where you would
like to help.

Thanks!
Ara.

Re: Hello

2010-04-27 Thread Basil Fitze

Hello,

I have been beta testing Ubuntu for a few years now, just upgraded to
10.4 RC and its fantastic. With WINE I am running MS Office and it works
perfectly except I can't use the SP's. Ubuntu 10.4 is going to be a hit,
but I have been a Linux fan when RED HAT was all there was and GUI what
was that. 93% of all servers now use Linux if only that was the case for
the desktop. Linux will win the Desktop one day. Windows 7 is just a cut
down version of VISTA and way over priced. Example a friend installed
Ubuntu 9.10 and it detected bad sectors all the disk utilities never
picked it up and was able to replace the drive before a system crash, he
is now a fan. Well done Canonical, well done.
