You will face websites not starting if they are not made aware of the
Apache 2.4 changes. Check the references to config in /etc/apache/conf.d
and the new conf-available and conf-enabled. I had to tinker with
phpmyadmin and roundcube (I think).

Hi Rich.

For simple management have a look at phpldapadmin. For more demanding
tasks Apache Directory Studio is good. Be warned: this is a java /
eclipse thing. You will need some CPU power.

dovecot-postfix

2011-02-14 Thread Egbert Jan van den Bussche
Since I had a problem after the last update, my main.cf was overwritten,
I wonder if it is possible to uninstall just the combined
dovecot-postfix package without doing harm to dovecot and postfix.

For some reason (somebody else installed trhe server) the ubuntu
specific dovecot-postfix stack was installed but I always handled the
server as separate postfix and dovecot server.

I would be very happy if I could get rid of JUST the dovecot-postfix
stack. (and keep my main.cf from being overwritten in the future).

TIA

Never had this problem. It is not clear if you run the conbination
config postfix-dovecot supplied as meta-package or just the two servers
installed om their own. I run the same two programs but stayed away from
any pre-cooked config. Both have there own config in their own /etc

PLEASE GIVE THE SERVER DISTRO ITS OLDFASIONED BOOT WITH ALL THOSE MESSAGES.

Sorry hit return too soon...

No I don't need two packages. Just two instances as Serge mentioned. One
should be started with '-6' on the command line. But the curren version is
3.1 and cannot be started with -6. When LL has 4.1 I certainly will try
duplicating the init script.

DHCP3-server in Lucid

Hi. I tried to get info on this on the Canonical site but didn't succeed
finding...

What version of the DHCP server will be in LL? KK has 3.1. Since I might be
in a native IPv6 pilot soon, I would like to use ISC DHCP 4.1 or newer. That
version can run in v4 and v6 mode but not at the same time. You seem to need
two instances then. So be it... Still I would like to stick to a packaged
version to prevent non standard locations for the binaries.

RE: Changes in booting with ubuntu-server 10.04

2010-03-26 Thread Egbert Jan
Hi again Soren,

Because IF I need to attach a console I do that to catch each and every
information that could help me find any problems during boot.

I'm from a old era. VAXVMS on DEC mini's. There were only servers and
character terminals. There were no VGA output devices. I want (and I think
many with me) the simple all revealing line oriented logging during the boot
process on a simple serial or console port. No bells, no wistles. If
something goes wrong during the boot we want to know and have informative
output at hand on (simple) output devices. Not hidden in high level messages
in fancy screens.

But what heck, nobody asked to have fancy server bootspash screens on
servers. If that is the new way of working, fine but just give us the
possibility to have a boot option to have all starting services scrolling
over the screen (and hopefully an 'OK' on the right).

No hard feelings, I also want this distro to be the best.
Egbert Jan (NL)

PS I switched from years and years of Mandriva usage to Ubuntu because I got
the impression that Ubuntu developers WERE paying attention to what the
community wants.

The only issue I had with 2.2.6 on 8.10 (server) was a wrong symbolic link
to smarty in /usr/share/gallery2/lib. After correcting that, all seems to
work. With G2 2.3 under Ubuntu 9.04 beta that issue is gone.
I'm doing these exercises because I'm in a transition phase from Mandriva
Linux to Ubuntu server. So I'm building a new mail/web/gallery2/e107 server
from scratch. Some things are quite different w.r.t. Mandriva. Gives the old
man (54) some more gray hairs. Well, not more hairs but more of the few left
turn gray ;-)

install from tarball. Then I can also control where it goes.

Upcoming meeting on IRC

2009-03-23 Thread Egbert Jan van den Bussche
Hello! New kid on the block here.

Just switching from Mandriva to Ubuntu mainly because the availability of a
server release. Just installed the Ubuntu server using the 8.10 CD. Looks
cool! A few things that crossed my mind and might find their way into the
server release:

1 shouldn't a server release put things like DNS in a chroot jail?

2 A server is normally not on DHCP. The install script should give at least
a choice between dhcp and static.

3 A default partioning scheme. Allocate some swap space and and put (at
least) /var and /home in their own partitions.

4 The ssl gang advises to use /etc/pki/... structure, I think. Ubuntu still
follows the 'old' /etc/ssl/... way of working.

Well, dunno if I stepped on some toes but I thought I should mention it.

Have a good meeting,

Best regards,
Egbert Jan (NL)
