I am quite confident that I can have the Drupal 6 website and theme
ready in a month or two. Personally, I would prefer to deploy the
Drupal 6 version with the new theme and the basic content first, and
then add features & content gradually as time permits. This way you
can expect to have a pretty decent site by 11.10 release time frame.

Question: is US released at the same time as Ubuntu core?

US website theme RFC & request for screenshots

2011-04-12 Thread Jorge G. Mare
Howdy,

As mentioned in another message today, I have posted some screenshots
of the Drupal 6 theme that I am developing for the US website. You can
see the images here:

https://picasaweb.google.com/jorge.g.mare/UbuntuStudioArtwork#

Input/feedback is welcome, but please note that this is still at a
very early stage, so be nice and ignore the rough edges (which there
are many). Also, please ignore the wording; I am using mostly borrowed
text as placeholders.

Now I have a request. I would like to have screenshots of US in
action, particularly in the application space and user cases that US
specifically caters to, to use as artwork in the front page and also
as part of the Screenshot section that will be added later. So I am
asking you, US users, to send me your screenies. Assuming this list
does not accept attachments, feel free to email them to me privately.

Thanks!

Design concepts for Ubuntu Studio 11.10

2011-04-12 Thread C K
Some of the recent threads have been a bit intertwined so I'm gonna
make 1 thread for conceptual ideas for Studio 11.10.

This tread is not for UI discussion. It's for thematic/concept
discussion Studio-wide. OS, Website, marketing, ect...

As per Ricardo's comments here:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-studio-devel/2011-April/003036.html
I would like to see if the Libre Graphics guys would like to help with
more than an ad. (how I read the idea anyway)

Here is a page to coordinate development of ideas:

Subject: Re: Ubuntu Studio 11.10 UI discussion. GNOME3, Unity, XFCE and

Don't know how much more RAM different destops would add. How much is
Xubuntu compared with Ubuntu Studio? And how much would Ubuntu Studio be
if we only changed the WM, nothing else?

I for one, don't expect that any WM will be that resource intensive by
itself, that it would make a really big difference in RAM usage.

Just compare Ubuntu and Ubuntu Studio. Regular Ubuntu Natty uses quickly
up to 2GB of RAM, while UBuntu Studio Natty uses about 1GB, both using
the classic Gnome Desktop.
Using Unity instead of Gnome does not impact on that from what I can
see, so how much is the WM actually doing?

--
Ailo

**

I feel like a dead horse is being flogged here. PC systems these days are
getting fed more and more ram with each update/upgrade. So the amount of ram
usage the WM uses is almost irrelevant now considering anyone serious enough
to be running Ubuntu Studio will more than likely have 4GB or more ram
anyway.

Chris Jones

I think there may be some confusion.

The Libre Graphics advertisement is independent of the website update.

The offer from the Libre Graphics folks was for the next edition which is
scheduled to drop in May. I do not think we have the latitude to change
this deadline without confirming with ginger, Ricardo, or Ana.

I *think* Cory is suggesting that we schedule to roll the website out in
time for 11.10.

I had originally hoped to draw some attention to Ubuntu Studio and solicit
some graphical design work flows from professional graphic artists who use
open source tools with the advertisement. If we have a definitive,
exciting, and revolutionary plan for the 11.10 release (XFCE, new UI, etc)
we might want to see if we can "hold" the ad to coincide with 11.10 and
create some excitement.

2011-04-12 Thread C K
So just looking over a few days it looks like the general consensus if
that XFCE will be fine. (i'm still gonna wait for more opinions)

There's been many questions that require data to answer. I cannot
answer everything. I'm here to head up the effort. So, the folks here
will have to pull together and do some investigation if real numbers
are needed.

Note, that I'm against just messing with our seeds a bunch to create
different disks. That said, if anyone wants to hack on some custom
live disks (outside of our normal build system) to use to use for
testing that will be most welcome.

Lastly, I think waiting 'till this weekend to have a generally agreed
upon direction is the way we're gonna go. We can't leave a topic open
indefinitely.

I confirm that using Puredyne (based on a previous Ubuntu, desktop
choice: Xfce) on a old laptop for live session is quite lighter and
faster than Ubuntu Studio. Xfce, even with applications needind gtk

2011-04-12 Thread Ricardo Lameiro
Te problem isnt on the WM per se, but on the amount of lib it needs to
load to work, plus the "weight" of its associated applications.
For instance, thunar (XFCE file manager) Is way more lighter than
Nautilus (gnome). Using Gtk doesnt mean that XFCE is as heavy as
Gnome.
You should try xfce and compare.

The french website about producing music with Linux distribution,
LinuxMao, suggest and explain how to configure Xfce instead of Gnome
for Ubuntu and Ubuntu Studio. In France, most of multimedia producers
(pro, hobbyists) use Xfce as main desktop. And a lot of specialized
multimedia distributions for live performance and installations use
Xfce, like Puredyne. It's light and work great in production, even for
long sessions and/or with important loads.

As I always said about UI design for Ubuntu Studio (I used to be one
of the first contributors), the main focus should be on a simple,
light and efficient desktop, in order to not spend to much time on
that point. Then, the most important should be to focus on applications
choice and packaging, and the possibility to use it to produce without
tweaking (simple and fast instal). But I know that for a lot of people
it is quite important to propose a beautiful desktop. Xfce allow both,
without yoo much effects, imho.

So, it seems like averybody on the mailing is ok for the switch to
Xfce, let's stop chatting and let's start to work on that point, to
get ready as soon as possible.

For the dock, why not simply use the simple and very good "Docky"?? It
has all we need and is one of the most easy for a day to day use.
Chatting with Docky team would be great to know if they could add some
docklets like "Menu", a better network manager, etc...

I would finish this answer with a question : for the beta, Ubuntu

Seattle Chaz, I would take that a step further possibly and ask for
community help developing a supportable set of work flows that graphic
artists would desire and we can base our package selection from that.
ginger "all-lower-case" coons from Libre Graphics actually suggested this.

We recently took this approach with the audio package selection. We
determined which tasks users would mostly likely desire, developed work
flows based on the available applications that supported these tasks, and
then modified the package selection accordingly. The applications shipped
on the image were fewer in quantity but more effective this way. The work
flows also provide the frame work for developing documentation and
tutorials.

I am hoping to accomplish the same feat for graphical tasks and
applications.

Thank you everyone,

Re: Ubuntu Studio 11.10 UI discussion. GNOME3, Unity, XFCE and Studio users workflow.

2011-04-12 Thread ailo

That's a pretty strong reason for choosing it actually. That, and the
fact that it uses GTK will make it a less jarring switch than GNOME
shell or Canonical's Unity.

It's resource intensiveness is not a factor as it's equal to or less
than current GNOME2.

Re: Ubuntu Studio 11.10 UI discussion. GNOME3, Unity, XFCE and Studio users workflow.

2011-04-12 Thread Eric Hedekar
I for one, have spent the past ten years using the Gnome interface and feel
very comfortable in it. So much so that I anticipate UI annoyances to drive
me away from Ubuntu if they stick with Ubiquity. Sorry if that's a
rant/uncompromising attitude, I just wanted to share with the group my
honest and heartfelt feelings on the subject (and yes I have been giving
Ubiquity a steady test run over the last year or so).

XFCE does not seem like it has anything to offer other than old/reliable
code. It's not even that much lighter than Gnome from what I understand
last time I looked into it.
