Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Keyboard is seen but won't connect
I've had a similar issue some time ago (trying to use midi in Pure Data) and my workaround was to make the connections through Patchage. It just worked, don't ask me why, and I've given it no thought ever since. Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Converting a recorded track to a timing track
Hi.In my (not so big) experience, "fluid" tempos and pulses are really hard to sync, as Ralf said. I recorded recently a song with many tempo/measure changes and I couldn't find any way to make organically. In the end, I kind of cheated. On a rallentando, for instance, I split the measures in several pieces so that the metronome would count the eight notes or the sixteenth notes, thus making it easier to follow the pulse when recording. For each situation, I tried to find a (often different) solution. But I prepared the whole tempo track all in numbers, not through any kind of tapping or beat detection. For me, tapping the tempo (or recording an audio with it) doesn't work very well because I find it hard to replicate the intention I had when I'm playing a different instrument. I find it even harder when other people are going to play. An "artificial" tempo is, for me, always easier to predict, making the recording more precise and demanding less editing. In the end, I think it sounds more natural this way. But, as I said, I'm not that experienced, so maybe there are better solutions out there.I hope this was of some help.Best regards,Pietro Em Segunda-feira, 26 de Dezembro de 2016 10:09, Ralf Mardorf escreveu: Hi, you need a sequencer that records a tempo map following you tapping a key. This automatically would set the tempo, BPM in relation to the time code position. This works very well to sync a sequencer to "averaged normal music" played by real musicians. After or before doing this you still need to manually edit the signature. No software is able to detect if you are playing 3/4 followed by 2/4 or if you are playing 5/4. Apart from this, if you are really playing by pulse, recording a tempo map might be more or less impossible, since when you actually wouldn't count, you need to count, resp. tap, so that the sequencer knows at what tempo you are, where quasi no tempo exists. In short, a feature to sync a MIDI sequencer to human played audio tracks by tapping a key does exist since decades, even to analog audio tapes where the sequencer is synced by SMPTE. I guess you won't find this feature provided by Qtractor. There only seems to be View > Tempo Map > Tap to set a tempo at a given position, not to generate a tempo map while playing the song. Maybe Ardour, Rosegarden or another Linux sequencer provides it. I suspect that assuming Ardour's Rhythm Ferret should still exist and assuming it should work, it just would work for "averaged normal music", https://community.ardour.org/a3_features_ferret . However, beat detection is for sure less good than tapping, if you are playing by pulse. Sync is an issue for all computer platforms, but Linux for sure is by far the weakest platform in this domain. I think you mean a score editor, right? A partition editor edits the partitions of the HD (like gparted, I think). Anyway, I really prefer Lilypond to all the other score editors I tried. You have to get used to writing the code, but it is not as hard as it may seem. And once you master it, it is almost unlimited. It actually isn't wysiwyg, but it's only a matter of getting used to that to. I now find it easier to write the score and tweak the edition based on the pdf file it generates, than tweaking the file I see on the monitor and finding out it was different after printing. Does anyone know SPEAR?
Hi, everyone. A (mac user) friend recommended me this software called Spear (Sinusoidal Partial Editing Analysis and Resynthesis), which is now distributed for free at this site: http://www.klingbeil.com/spear It runs on Mac OS and Windows and seems to be similar to Audio Sculpt (also mac). I'm testing it under Wine and it looks very interesting. There is a paper published also at the site which says the program is portable to GTK LInux. Wouldn't anyone be interested in having a look and checking to see if it couldn't be packaged? I'd love to do it, but I have no programming skills for it. By the way, does anyone know or recommend a partial editing software in the Ubuntu repositories? I tried Ceres 3 when I used Demudi, but I could never make it work. Well, I don't think you should encourage people with low spec hardware, nor giving up being realistic about the their tasks. But exactly what do you mean when you say the "minimum system requirement" is, say, 2Ghz with 1MB? It is the minimum for what, since the apps do run with a lot less than that? So I don't see this kind of answer as satisfactory, since we do not know, for example, what Mr. Morales had in mind about what to do with his machines when he asked what the "minimum machine" would be. Of course, with a "low spec" you won't be able to open as many channels or as many plugins, but if you don't have the money for a hardware upgrade, I think you can still install Ubuntu Studio "being realistic" about what you will be able to do. And I think you will still be able to do a lot more with Ardour and ladspa, on the same machine, than you would with Cubase. There's a lot to be realistic about, and one thing how much money one can invest on hardware upgrades. And I think the point is, if someone who works (even if only as a hobby) with multimedia on a "low spec" and intends to give up Windows, it seems to me that Ubuntu Studio is an option, no matter what machine one has. It's a little three voice prelude I wrote as an introduction for a song in a band I used to play, but that never actually got into a record. The final chord is a bit dissonant since it was supposed to prepare the first chord of the song, which would be a D major. I recorded it with my electric organ (completely analogical) in ardour and used gverb (I think) for ambiance. I just can't remember if I did it in Ubuntu Studio or if I was still in Demudi. Re: [Fwd: [Poll] Changing permissions on raw1394]
Hi, Andrew. I don't know if it would be the case to deal with what I'm going to write about in this app your are developing. If it isn't, please just ignore this post. My trouble is to set jack to accept the 4 outs my Audigy soundcard has as independent channels. I've been trying to do so since I first started using Linux with Demudi about 2 years ago with no luck. Alsa recongnizes and adresses them correctly (with speaker test and alsa mixer), but I can't make it with jack nor with pd. I found some changes to be done at the .asoundrc file at the Alsa unofficial wiki, but that didn't work either. I've been doing the best I can, but being a musician and not a computer programmer, it's been quite a tough time trying to unveil all these magic spells to configure things by hand. I'd really apreciate it if this could be done in a more intuitive way. Or maybe I just should start saving money for another soundcard. :^) Thanks anyway. Best regards, Pietro Andrew Hunter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> escreveu: I seem to have sent this message only to the -devel list, so here it is. :) Original Message Subject: [Poll] Changing permissions on raw1394 Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 12:13:40 + From: Andrew Hunter Reply-To: Ubuntu Studio Users Help and Discussion To: Ubuntu Studio Users Help and Discussion , Ubuntu Studio Development & Technical Discussion Hey everyone! If you have not heard about it already, the Ubuntu Studio team is looking at creating an app that would easily allow users to change common settings that they may be currently editing by hand.[1] One of the features that we are considering is changing the permissions on raw1394 /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules from disk to audio or video. This is a necessary change currently to enable firewire based devices to work as a regular user, such as firewire sound cards and video cameras. The other alternative solution is to add the user to group "disk", though this may also cause problems. The issue with this is that it creates a rather large security risk for the system, in that any device on the firewire bus can run with root privileges. This risk is less of an issue for stand-alone machines that do not use Ethernet over firewire, but is still something to consider. I would like to stress that it _will not_ be changed by default. All that we are considering is providing a more accessible way to modify those settings. In the future, when Ubuntu and by extension Ubuntu Studio move to the new firewire stack in the kernel, this issue will be an non-issue. The new kernel stack provides much finer granularity and control over permissions on specific devices. The question then I am posing to you guys is this: How many of you already change this setting by hand? Res: What do you guys listen to? :)
I grew up listening to the Beatles, was crazy about Deep Purple (and other 70's) when I was a teenager, listened to a lot of progressive rock (Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Zappa, etc) and electric jazz (Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, etc) since I started to play the bass, some Brazilian music through all that and nowadays I mainly listen to "classical" music, from early medieval music to contemporary electroacoustic which, as Rafael said, is the main reason I'm trying to get along with this audio stuff. Res: Notation Software
I'm very glad to see this discussion about notation here. I really miss a good notation software and think this prevents many musicians from switching to Linux. I don't know how many Ubuntu Studio users care for notation (I think many do), but I'm pretty sure most musicians nowadays rely on notation softwares to do their job, which I believe is reason enough for taking this subject seriously. I know nearly nothing about software development, but as a musician I'm looking forward for a free software competing with Finale or Sibelius, in the same level as Open Office does with Microsoft Office. I'm sure we are on the way. Cheers and thanks for all the efforts you guys have been making. I had tried changing every thing to gutsy, and doing sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get upgrade, then sudo apt-get dist upgrade, and ran into similar problems. Then I changed everything back to feisty, an used Update Manager, and that worked much better. --Paul ___ No banners. No pop-ups. No kidding. I think it's working. It'll take a while until it's over because my connection is really slow, so I'm not sure yet. But thank you very much for the tips. The sources.list file was really quite messy. Hi, Fernando and Janne. Thank you for the tips. I've just tried replacing the archive.ubuntustudio.org with archive.ubuntu.com in the software sources, but now i get this message: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/dists/feisty/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.46 80] If I change the distribution to gutsy, the only difference is this: http://archive.ubuntu.com/dists/gutsy/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz: 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.46 80] If you could still help me I'd be very thankful. Sorry if I'm doing something stupid. Hello Pietro, all UbuntuStudio's packages are nowadays in the official Ubuntu repositories, so there is no need for a separate repository anymore. You should be able to upgrade to Gutsy simply by replacing archive.ubuntustudio.org with archive.ubuntu.com. Then a normal dist-upgrade should be entirely possible. -- Jaska -- Ubuntu-Studio-users mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-users Abra sua conta no Yahoo! I've been trying to update from feisty to gutsy (by simply clicking the button in the update manager), but the update manager always stops giving me an error message, "failing to fetch" these three files: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio/dists/feisty/Release.gpg Não foi possível resolver 'archive.ubuntustudio.org' Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio/dists/feisty/main/i18n/Translation-pt_BR.bz2 Não foi possível resolver 'archive.ubuntustudio.org' Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio/dists/feisty/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz Não foi possível resolver 'archive.ubuntustudio.org' Does anybody know what's wrong? Audigy 1 platinum
Hi! I wonder if anyone knows how to set the rear channels of the Soundblaster Audigy Platinum as independant channels. I've given up trying to do so since I started using Linux (with the extinct Demudi). I have the alsa mixer with independant volumes for the "surround" channels, but they are still just stereo, and I'd be very glad to have a quadraphonic system. Jack won't accept more than 2 output channels either. Is it a emu10k1 limitation ? Thanks, Pietro Abra sua conta no Yahoo! Hi everybody! I'm a Ubuntu Studio user and I'd like to know if I should update to Ubuntu 7.10. Would it interfere with the configurations provided by Ubuntu Studio?
